Defining Biblical Hermeneutics
How Biblical interpretations, or hermeneutics of the Bible, affect the way we read the scriptures

For as long as there have been Biblical texts, there have been Biblical hermeneutics, or Biblical interpretations. One
definition of hermeneutics (given by Bernhard W. Anderson in a piece he wrote for Bible Review) is that Biblical
hermeneutics are modes of [Bible] interpretation[s]. In another Bible Review article, James A. Sanders offered a Biblical
hermeneutics definition as interpretive lens[es] through which one reads the Bible. Going a step further, the Merriam-
Webster dictionary extends its hermeneutics definition to include not only the methods or principles of the
interpretations but also the study of those very Biblical interpretations. In short, the hermeneutics of the Bible are the
many ways people read the Bible.
Biblical hermeneutics even take place within the Biblical text itself. In the Hebrew Bible, the authors of the Psalms and the
prophets often referred back to the Torah and incorporated their own interpretations and understanding of the text from
their social locations
In the years leading up to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 7 0 C.E., several different Jewish groups had risen to
prominence, including the Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes. Although they were all Jewish, each group had very different
Biblical hermeneutics. Definition of what happened to the soul after death, proper temple sacrifice and the importance of
studying the law differed among these groups because of their varying approaches. Christianity also began as a Jewish
sect, but as Jesus followers developed their own hermeneutics in relation to the law and the role of the messiah, it became
a distinct religion.

Today there are many hermeneutics applied to the Bible. These methodologies range from historical-critical, to post-colonial, to rhetorical, to cultural-critical, to
ecological to canonical-critical. These are all types of Biblical hermeneutics. Part of the reason that so many hermeneutics exist is that interpreters have different goals.
For example, if you want to understand how Mosess life in the wilderness differed from daily life in the ancient Levant, you would use an
archaeological/anthropological hermeneutic. However, if you want to understand the gender politics between Miriam and Moses in the wilderness, you would use a
feminist or womanist approach to the text. Different hermeneutics lead to different types of interpretations. Cheryl Exum famously wrote two articles on Exodus 1-2:10
focusing on the women in the narrative. Her conclusions in these articles appear contradictory, but that is because she used two different hermeneutics (rhetorical and

feminist) and each method focused on different elements of the text, which led to different interpretations of the text.
Even archaeology, which is the focus of BAR, is a Biblical hermeneutic. By studying the remains of ancient people and how they lived, and comparing their finds to the
texts, archaeologists are able to offer exciting new interpretations. For example, the sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most interpreted stories throughout history. The
disturbing narrative about a God who orders his follower to sacrifice his son, but ultimately withdraws this command at the final moment, has caused great discomfort
in readers for several reasons. Many of these reasons revolve around the modern revulsion regarding child sacrifice. The world of archaeology provides insight into the
practice (or non-practice) of sacrifice in the ancient world, as well as the hilltop altars, which appear in the story. For more on this topic see Infants Sacrificed? The Tale

There are many ways in which you can approach the text, and your method will determine your interpretation. It is important then to be transparent about what is
essential to you as a reader and recognize how that impacts the interpretations that you develop. Your interpretive goal will ultimately determine your Biblical
hermeneutic.

No wrong way to do it? What is the it? There are many ways to interpret the Bible, but weather a way is right or wrong I guess would depend on your aim. If the
goal is the truth, truth by its very nature is exclusive. Therefore, if truth is the aim, there may indeed be a right and a wrong way to go about it.

Whatever your preferred method or Bible hermeneutics definition, theres virtually no wrong way to do it.
Really??? Are you an advocate of situational ethics? Are the Scriptures merely a religious book or is it the living, active Word of God inspired by His Spirit as the
Scriptures themselves claim?
There definitely is a WRONG method of interpreting the Bible and million of people fall into that category. Far too many start with their own fallible sinful biases and
search the Scriptures for only that which supports their predetermined positions. There are definitely those who twist [the Scriptures] to their own destruction., (2
Peter 3:16). They do not want Gods perspective, standards, Truth, or Kingdom; they want to fulfill their own sinful lusts and bents. Hence, they abuse, misuse,
misinterpret, and twist the Scriptures.

From the time that the Word of God was first written down Satan has consistently and constantly attacked the Word, first by NOT allowing people to own it, by burning

Open the majority of books or informative tracts, in book stores, which say they can teach you, on how to read and understand, the Word of God, and you will discover
with a little in depth study that, THE BASIS FOR THEIR UNDERSTANDING WILL BE PHILOSOPHY.
We are instructed by the Word of God to not use mans ways of dividing the Word, but to allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth. Please take note of what our
LORD says in Jeremiah:

(5) Thus saith the LORD; CURSED be the man that TRUSTETH IN MAN, AND MAKETH FLESH HIS ARM, AND WHOSE HEART DEPARTETH FROM THE LORD.
But if we rely on the LORD only and not on man:

In all certainty if we are not relying on the hand of God, then we are relying on the Accuser; Satan to teach us through mans arrogance and self elevation above the
divine. When we have to bring ourselves down low, to allow our Father to work, with His Spirit through us. That we may be led into all truth.

Now I dont know about you, but the way it sounds, the Word of God has been written in such a way that WE SIMPLE FOLK WILL UNDERSTAND. AND DO NOT
NEED DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS, ALL WE NEED IS THE UNCTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FROM JESUS EVEN OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN.
And further more in Peter we are told that the Word is its own expositor ;

We must all have the desire to do Gods will at all times, even though it is difficult, but we must not keep quiet, we must raise the standard for our LORD. Even though
persecution is one of the responses of the world, towards a true follower of God. As in the words of Jeremiah; Jer 20:9 KJV
(9) Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary
with forbearing, and I could not stay.

Biblical hermeneutics should be just that, Biblical, all thru scripture different writers quote scripture, and interpret it. so Im thinking our hermeneutic should come from
those writers

There is a main part of the Bible where the hermeneutics has lost out to the silly season of oddball theories and that is the numbers in scripture. Has anybody
seriously investigated why the biblical writers inserted those unbelievable final ages. exaggerated population sizes and special time periods? Those numbers must
have been of tremendous importance for the writer P in covertly insert many of them in scripture. But any mention of the numbers bring immediate responses of
numerology,, which is a trivial pursuit of trying to predict the future by interpreting biblical numbers. Because the numbers were exaggerated in size and the whiplash of
numerology, the biblical numbers have largely been ignored while the written text is promoted as the divine word of God. I know of no academic study where a major
part of the curriculum is avoided and it is in reality saying that the God who inspired the biblical writers was mathematically illiterate. Isnt it about time that the
numbers got a sensible airing and were subjected to investigation for alternative functions other than domestic related book keeping accounts.

The debate on which interpretation is right and which is wrong will keep going on until Jesus Christ returns in power and great glory. But I personally feel that the Bible;
as the living and active Word of God can have many interpretations and still be absolute truth. The truth; for each situation, will not contradict the other. It is basically
how one applies it to living Gods way of life.

Feminist/liberationist/ rebellionist always say there is no wrong way, all voices are equally valid etc. They are also more likely to only use archeological snippets only
when it suits their case, and are more likely to say that it was a time of purely oral tradition because no one could write back then. They often follow 18th C preNazi
German scholarship that says there is no way to know what happened that long ago so it all must have been lies, therefore we can change the text to suit our theory
of men being &*&%$

The question of hermeneutics is the complex one of meaning. In biblical hermeneutics, does one look to the text for meaning? to the author? to the reader? the world?
some combination? Surely, hermeneutics allows us to talk about theoriesmimetic, formal, rhetorical, expressive. All us us surely must begin with some sense of how
individuals acquire knowledgehow is it that we know what we know? Reading moves us deeply into a symbol system, an intricate web of words that demands all of us
to become better readers and better informed readers. Yes, science has changed the way people read the Biblenow looking for verifiability or truth that accords with
fact. We will never be able again to rest quietly in the pre-critical world which read the world, history, and humankind in light of the Bible; we now read the Bible in light
of the physical world, history, and science. We need hermeneutics to reveal to us our assumptions and inconsistency in talking about anything we read and how we
make meaning of it.

The methods of interpretation of all scared text have flaws. The most notable flaw, common to all, is best illustrated with the simple notion of rendering in image
processing. First consider an analogue TV verses a digital TV verses a HD TV. Assuming all are viewing a blank blue wall with respective cameras, then each will
show a blue wall. The HD TV may show small irregularities in the wall or perhaps see false patterns from random irregularities. The old analogue TV will provide the
best rendering of the blue wall in terms of relevant information.
Likewise, many approaches to interpretation seek to render information from sacred text that is just not there. They fail to recognize the actual fidelity of the text itself
and therefore arrive at different, even, false interpretations. However, readers seek detailed answers for questions which are not addressed by scared text. The quest of
the masses for answers to spiritual questions and life uncertainties create religious leaders and advisors who provide all the answers from imagined information and/or
historical answers. Both of which often exceeded the fidelity scared texts!
Today religious scholars are trying to maintain their relevance by so-called multidiscipline approaches to interpretation. Most of these approaches are answers looking
for questions. This is not to say all such endeavors are fruitless. The first rule of hermeneutics should be to determine the baseline information content of a portion of
text and recognize its limits of use. The second rule is to avoid its application beyond its limits. Perhaps the last rule of hermeneutics should be to embrace the
uncertainty inherent in the interpretation of scared texts. It is better to say we do not know than offer guesses as learned judgment.

Some people fail to realize that endlessly quoting their favorite verses is not going to convince anybody of anything. TL;DR is an understatement. I wouldnt read it if it
was two lines. I always read comments, hoping to find a new way of looking at things, but too often just find nonsense.
