in the possession of Jon until soldto JoshuaMefford, Sept. 8,1835
Isaac ftickett was one of3 brothers and sisters (and their husbands)who
movedto Ohio prior to 1800. Capt. JacobPrickett had 11childrwi in
all. The above named Prickett children Mio married into the Jolliffe
femilywereof one of Isaac'sbrotha*s (JacobPrickettJr.) whodid not
move to Ohio.A younger brother ofElnour Hoult Jolliffe, Elisha Hoult,
married Dorothy Prickett, also a child ofJacob Prickett Jr..
William, brother ofJohn Jolliffe, Sr. as I have previously stated,
married Catharine Collins. Their oldest son, James Jolliffe married
Drusilla Prickett, a daughter ofJosiah Prickett, anoth^ ofIsaac
Prickett's brothers who did not move to Ohio. Upon the death of
Catharine Collins, William Jolliffe married the widowofJosiah
Prickett, Charity (taylor) Prickett. Josiah and Charity had a son John
Prickett who married a Mary Jolliffe. Mary Jolliffe's parents are
unknown, but the marriage inidcates that another Jolliffe femily must
have lived in the area of Morgantown, Va. in the late 1700's.
All ofJohn and Elnour's children bom before 1810 were bom in ,or
near Morgantown, Virginia (now W.Va.), as fw John and Elnour moved to
Adams Co., Ohio in 1810. Their last 4 children (Drusilla, Raphael,
Job, and Rachel) were bom in Adams Co., Ohio in a section which
became Brown county in 1818.
Between the dates 1825 and 1835 , we have John Jolliffe ,Sr. ,son of
James and I&nnah Jolliffe living in JeffersonTownship, Brown Co.,
Ohiojust a fewmiles east of wfrat is nowRusselville, Ohio. Wehave
John Jolliffe, Jr., son ofJohn Jolliffe ,Sr. ,living in Eagle
township, BrownCo.,Ohiowith his wifeNancySquires. Wehave John
Jolliffe, s(Mi ofWilliam Jolliffe and wife Rebeck Neill, living in
Clermont Co. ,Ohio, as a lawyer Mio often had buisness in Georgetown
3rown Co. ,Ohio. This last John Jolliffe married Synthelia McClure of
Clermont Co. Sept. 23 , 1835 . There were so many John, James, and
William Jolliffe'srunning around Virginia and Ohio in the late 1700's
and early 1800'sthat it is difficult fromthe records to keep them
straight.
Where I have previouslynoted an intermingling offemiliesby marriage
in the area ofMorgantown, Va.(nowW .Va.), it is interesting to note
the intermingling of families by marriage in Ohio. Margaret Jolliffe
married Reason Slack. Job Jolliffe married Catharine Slack. John Slack
married Susan Bowler. Enoch Jolliffe married Catharine Bowler. The
widow of Samuel Herrick ,Catharine (Molloy) HOTrick mother in -law of
Raphael Hoult Jolliffe, married WilliamOrmakirke Bowler, as a second
marriage for each. WilliamBowler was undoubtablythe fether ofSusan
and Catharine Bowler All these marriages took place in the area ofBrown
and Clermont counties, in Ohio.

Johnson Co. .Indiana.
In 1814, Raphael's fether, JohnJolliffe, Sr., madea trip to
Woodford Co. .Kentucky and purchaseda fermin Miat was then Adams Co.,
Ohio .fromSamuel Steveson. The purchase was completedSept. 2,1814. It
is presumed that this fium east of Russelville, Ohio.wasRapael's home
until his marriage to Priscilla Herrick on Aug. 24,1834.
Raphael andPriscilla soldtheir ferm landnorthof Hurdland, Missouri
, May 17,1854. On Jan. 25 ,1858Raphael purchased another fermwithin
1/2mile of the one sold 4 years earlia*. Bythe 1860craisus ofKnox Co.
,Mo., Priscilla's mother .Catharine Bowler, and her 1/2 broAer,
Samuel Bowler, were living in KnoxCo. ,Mo., with Priscilla's daughter
Mrs. Munns. Priscilla died 4-17-1861. At that time, Thomas H. Benton
,Sarah Margaret, and MaryArmMatildaas well, went to livewith Mrs.
Munns.Wemaynever knowMiy, unless it was to providefor his sons,
WilliamJames and Samuel Woodbridge, but Raphael Jolliffeon Aug. 26
,1861 ,after his wife's death, purchased another ferm 3 1/2 miles east
and a mile north ofthe town ofEdina .Missouri. Then on 1-8-1862
remarried a Jane Davis. In march of 1862, Samuel Woodbridge died.
Raphael and Jane soldthe frumeast and north ofEdina on Sept. 28,1863
. Raphael liveduntil Aug. 18,1885 . DavidFoxsaysRaphael fought with
the Union Army, in the Civil War .however, I have yet to ISnd a
confirming record.
As youcan seefrom the records only4 ( CatharineEllenor.MarthaJane
, WilliamJames and Thomas Boiton) lived to have descend^ts. William
James had only daughters from 2 known marriages. So, only Thomas R
Benton had descendents vdiich carried on the Jolliffe name.
Fact #3: Raphael usedthe name Woodbridge for 2 of his children; a boy
(Samuel Woodbridge) and a girl (HannahWoodbridge). The name Woodbridge
is, thwefore, a femilyname. Raphael and Woodbridge Jolliffowere
therefore, brothers.
Fact #4: Raphaelnamedhis first child, a girl, CatharineElleior.
Catharine was Raphael'smother in law. Raphaelnamed his first boychild
, John Samuel. Samuelwas Raphael'sfether in law. Ifwe reversethese
fects, Raphael's mother was Ellenor and his fether was John. Thus,
Raphael and Woodbridge Jolliffe werethe childrenof JohnJolliffe and
his wife, Ellenor Woodbridge.
Fact #5: The 1860 Census records of Knox County, Missouri, show
Raphael Jolliffeand his wife, Priscilla, werebothbom in Ohio. We
knowRaphael, fromthe HerrickGaiealogy, was bom April 26,1812 .
Thus we know that John Jolliffe and his wife, Ellenor Woodbridge, were
living in either Clerm(xit or Adams county, Ohio, as early as 1812.
Browncounty, Ohio, was formed in 1818fromClermont and Adams
Counties.
Hamiltoncounty, Ohio, was formedin 1790as an original county. Adams
countywas formed from Runilton in 1797. Clermont countywas formed from
11
Hamilton in 1800. Since John Jolliflfe was living in an area which became
Brown County, he hadto livein eastmi Clermont or western Adams
county prior totheformation ofBrown Coimty. John most likely lived in
the eastern end of Clermont Countysince Samuel Herrickwas a surveyor
in Clermont County anddoingworknear PointPleasant as earlyas 1816
(2 years prior to the formation of Brown Co.).

Fact #1 : The U.S. Census records ofBrown county, Ohio, shows a John
12
Jolliffe in BrownCounty, Ohio in 1820. This was 5 years prior to the
&mous John JoIlifFe's move to Clermont County. Thus, there was at
least 2 John Jolliffe's involved in the early history ofBrown County

to come from the non-femous John Jolliffe. Likewise, any Tombstone

a television set.
2. One of her greatestachievements from mypoint of view, wasgiving
birthto a childwhoweighed 13lbs. It's soeasytorecalla
conversation when she talked about him, her baby, and seventh child. The
four oldergirlshad expected a tinybaby to cuddle andhelpraise, and
instead found one nearlyhalf-grown and hard to lift. The last winter,
the same son's fifth child and first boymade her 24th grandchild.

Notes for MARIAN JOSEPHINE DURST:
Benton Jolliffe married Marion and they moved to Albuquerque,New
Mexico in the 1950's.Benton worked for Sandia Labratories in
Albuquerque,Marion was an Armynurse. DonJolliffemet Marion, played
tennis with her at F.E. Warren Air force base in Cheyenne,Wyoming. He
took her h(Hneto his house (Alice and Jesse Benton Jolliffes home),there
she met and later married Don's brother Benton.
She and Benton tried to have children but Benton's sperm count was too
low for Marion to conceive. They were going to adopt a child but on the
day they were told there was a baby for them ,Marion also received the
news that she had Multiple Sclerosis. She was in her late 20's or early
30's at that time. Benton and Marion were veiy disappointed. Marion's
primarycaretaker for 18years,LatreIleBach told me that Benton and
Marion took in a foster child once ,a teenager but Benton needed a
situation where he could have more control.
Over the years they had 2 Dachsunds. Benton lost a kidney to cancer
and mydad gavehimone ofhis,in later years that kidneyfailedtoo and
Bentonwas put on dialosis, laterhe got prostratecancerand died in
1986. (1 yr after his mother,Alice in 1985).
Benton was a serious kind ofguy,he sang in a barbershop quartet and
traveled around the the U.S..sin^ng with them.
He spent manyyears workingon the Jolliffegeneaology and his charts
and papers were passed on to his brothers(D(Mi's) children
Sherry,E>avid,and Valerie.
Marion was witty and intellegent and an inspiration to all that know
her. She degressed fromwalkingwith a limp to walking with a cane and
then 2 canes and was eventually wheelchair bound fromabout 1960to her
death in 1999. She had a biting wit and we visited with her in later
years as we passed thru Albuquerque we had to chuckle at the things she
said. She said " grandma Jolliffe probably saved uncle Benton's first
poop, she saved everything else"
After Uncle Benton died the pastor was visiting with Marion in her
house and he asked her what she was going to do now(pretty much everyone
expectedMarionto die beforeBenton)Marionjust said "Whenyou're
being raped, the best thing to do is relax and enjoyit!"
