Opening Statement – a nice, concise statement as to why you want to

study the subject

My interest in law has stemmed from having a genuine passion to solve

problems and to improve the lives of others and to ensure that justice is
done.

More specific reasons as to why you want to study your chosen subject,
including information about related past studies

It was two years ago whilst studying on my BTEC National Diploma in

Business (Criminal Law unit) that I became fascinating in the UK Legal
System. In that particular unit, I discovered all aspects of Criminal Law
relating to business and studied the concept of Precedent. Similarly, I
observed a court case where my friend had applied for a Visa to be
granted to his wife. This further fuelled my interest in the subject.

A brief description of your character and reasons as to how it ´fits´with

your chosen course/career.

Strong minded is how people might describe me – I like to get my views

across in a non threatening yet lucid and assertive way. Working in Law
requires a person to be strong minded so I feel I already possess this
important quality.

Any reading/research you have completed which has informed your

interest in the subject or decision to study it at university level.
Through having read ‘The Law Magazine’ journal, I have taken on board a
wealth of information relating to careers in the sector, procedures,
qualifications required and cases. Reading Catherine Elliott and Frances
Quinns’ ‘English Legal System’ book has bolstered my existing awareness
of this vast and thought provoking subject.
Any work experience, relevant to your choice of degree or not. If not
strictly relevant, mention the skills that you have developed which are
transferable.

Working in an Estate Agency in north London provided me exposure to

Property Law not to mention a real grounding in how to speak to clients
both face-to-face and over the telephone.

Skills that you have acquired whilst at School

Skills that I have acquired whilst at Southgate College are numerous but
include team working, time management, organisational, inter-personal and
presentation skills. Not only will these assist me with my Higher
Education studies but when I embark upon my career as well.

Achievements from School

During my first year at College I was nominated for the post of Class
Representative; this required me to collect the thoughts and opinions of
my peers and feed them back to my Personal Tutor and Head of
Department. This experience demonstrated that I have no problem
communicating with people regardless of their seniority or age which I
consider to be essential in the Legal Profession.

Skills developed/perfected whilst at School

Planning, organising, executing and evaluating a Cultural Event that my
peers and I took part in for Unit 18: Managing a Business Event (BTEC
National Diploma in Business) gave me the chance to deploy my skills and
qualities and at the same time get involved with cross-college extra-
curricula life. The event proved to be a success and was enjoyed by all.

Closing statement which reminds the admissions officer why you want to
embark upon your chosen course of study/career – your final opportunity
to make a good impression.

In the future, I would like to see myself working as a Solicitor, advising

them of their legal rights and representing them as appropriate. I
believe I have the dedication and determination to commit to a career in
the legal profession.
