Report to the Community

Cleveland Central Catholic High Schools Annual Cleanup+Clams event was held on September 27, 2014. The
goals of the event are to beautify the Cleveland Central Catholic campus, offer community service opportunities
for our students and to raise funds to support tuition assistance.

Three goals, one event- an outpouring of support

2014 Cleanup+Clams by the numbers:
13 Corporations and foundations provided
$42,000 in sponsorships benefitting CCC tuition
assistance.
Over $3500 in individual donations
200+ volunteers
11 projects
8 companies donating project materials

3 trees planted
20+ perennial plants added to landscape
50+ trees pruned and mulched
50+ students participated
760+ hours of service
31 cu ft. of top soil and mulch distributed

Cleanup+Clams is driven by Cleveland Central Catholics mission- learning to lead while preparing to
serve. All projects addressed in 2014 accomplished a vision of a more welcoming and safer campus.
Decorative landscaping and exterior painting brightened entrances. Clear cutting brush in vacant lots
and parking areas make them less prone to vandalism and loss. Removing graffiti, giving sitting areas a
face lift and tidying up ragged areas shows that Central Catholic takes pride in the neighborhood and all
of Slavic Village.
To complete these projects we turned to friends across Northeast Ohio to donate supplies. All top soil,
mulch and plant material was donated. Kurtz Bros., Petitti Garden Centers, Grandes Nursery and
Romano & Sons all contributed to the landscaping and gardening projects. Only one gallon of paint was
purchased, the rest was either salvaged from past school projects or donated by Sherwin Williams stores
in Cleveland Heights and Garfield Heights. Home Depot in Steelyard Commons also contributed $100 in
supplies as part of their community building program. These donations helped minimize cost and
maximize the direct support to the tuition assistance programs.

Original School Entrance

Even though it has been years since this was the primary entrance, the wrought iron railings still get a lot use. After
cleaning with wire brushes and sand paper, the railing and vent cover were given fresh coats of paint.

Re-purposed specialty paint changed the railings from standard black to a true blue. The new color scheme
announces that This is the home of the Ironmen with the school colors of red, white and blue.

E.67th Garden Fences & Cement Picnic Tables

The team removed graffiti and coated the fence with a beautiful and durable weather resistant stain.

White washing the concrete picnic tables with durable concrete paint gives them a clean strong finish. The CCC
art club will look to use these tables for small murals in the spring.

Approach to CCC campus and the Grand Entrance at Broadway & Baxter

The changes at the Grand Entrance are dramatic, bringing in a whole new set of plants to give it life and color. Similar to
the school entrances, these plants are perennials and placed to give a good appearance with minimal maintenance.

The approach to campus along Broadway Avenue was more subtle. Volunteers removed weeds and refilled the planters
with mulch as well as trimming the trees to help future growth.

Together
Bus Parking Lot & Softball Field

One of the most people intense projects involved clearing out years of overgrown brush from the bus parking lot and
back fences of the east most softball field at Morgana Park.

40+ volunteers, sawed, clipped and dug their way to clearing a staggering amount of underbrush and several small trees.
In addition to a cleaner look, the open views of the lot will discourage vandalism.

Main Entrances & Landscaping along E. 67th Street

Refreshing the main entrances to the building with perennials, plantings make the building more
welcoming with minimal future maintenance.

3628 E.65th Street

A vacant lot owned by the Cuyahoga County Land Bank had become a neighborhood eyesore. Overgrowth and trash
were starting to pile up. At the request of Ward 12 Cleveland Councilman Anthony Brancatelli, our volunteers cleared
out the lot and cut back the brush to make way for future green space landscaping.

These are just a few select highlights of the projects tackled at Cleanup+Clams 2014. Our volunteers worked hard and
completed an astounding amount of work in roughly three hours on one Saturday morning. Looking ahead to 2015 and
beyond, Cleanup+Clams is an opportunity for Cleveland Central Catholic to help build up the community we are so proud
to call home.
Thank you again to all of our sponsors and donors for your faith and support of our school, its students and mission.
