By-election called
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

nonie.hall@shaw.ca

With the announcement of Councillor John

Rempel resigning at the end of October, a byelection has been called for Dec. 15. Under
Alberta legislation a municipality has 90 days
to hold a by-election when a position opens
up on council. It was felt trying to hold the
election in early January could be tough with
people possibly away on holidays.
The reason were doing it before Christmas
is because a lot of people leave after Christmas, or theyre gone on holidays, said Municipal Clerk for the town Jennifer Sawatzky.
Were trying to do it before Christmas but
not too close to Christmas, so we thought the
15 would be good and then working back, I
have strict deadlines in regards to advertising of the election and an advanced vote and
nomination day.
Nomination papers are available now at the
Town of Strathmore office, and nomination
day is Nov. 17, which is exactly four weeks
before the election, and is the minimum allowable time between nomination day and
Election Day.
Nomination forms must be signed by five
electors over the age of 18 who live in the
Town of Strathmore, and who have also lived
here for at least six months. The fee is $250,
and the nomination hours are from 8:30 a.m.
to 12 p.m. Forms are to be brought into the
town office in that time frame, not a minute
later.
Those hours are very strict, so if they come
in at one minute after 12 noon or even a few
milliseconds after, I cant accept the applications, thats legislation, said Sawatzky.
Candidates dont have to bring in the forms
personally on Nov. 17, but they are required
to have them signed before a Commissioner
of Oaths. The forms can also be signed in
front of Sawatzky, who is a Commissioner of
Oaths.
After nominations have closed, which is 12
noon, people can come in and inspect the
nominations, but no one can inspect them
before, said Sawatzky.
I assume several people will run. We normally dont have quite as big a turnout at a
by-election, but we certainly encourage people to come and vote, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford.
The advanced poll will be held on Dec. 8,
with the election itself taking place on Dec.
15 at the Civic Centre. All voters must be
18-years-old, Strathmore residents and must
have ID.

Rempel resigns
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Health issues, partly related to stress,
are the reason why one long-time
councillor handed in his resignation
on Oct. 15.
John Rempel has served 14 years as a
councillor in the community, and says
it is now time to step back.
The last year Ive been dealing with
some medical issues, and theyre not
going away. The medical professionals
that I have been working with strongly
suggested that I remove myself from
the stress of being on council, said
Rempel. I dont like the idea of quitting before the end of the term, but I
really couldnt see myself finishing the
term, so I might as well step aside to
give somebody else an opportunity to
serve the community and serve out the
term for me.
Rempel doesnt plan to fully retire he drives bus for the international students, something he said he doesnt

find stressful at all, and he will likely

find something else to keep himself
busy.
Theres a lot more stress involved
than what people might think. I guess
maybe as you get older you dont deal
with stress as well as maybe when
youre younger, said Rempel of being
on council.
The first few terms went by fast, and
he was looking forward to dealing with
issues, but said this last year has been
an overwhelming one for him.
So I felt it was in the towns best
interest if I resigned. If I couldnt fully commit myself to being there and
to doing whats expected of us, said
Rempel.
A lot of things have been accomplished during his time on council but
what stands out most of all is the satisfaction that I got from representing
the seniors of this community, that was
an absolute pleasure to do that, and
thats one thing that I will probably
miss more than anything.

Councillor John Rempel tendered his resignation from council on Oct. 15. He officially resigns
from the position at the end of the month. A byelection has been called, with nomination day set
for Nov. 17.

Ive worked with John Rempel for

many years he has been a dedicated
councillor, he always voiced his opinions, was good to deal with, and he
listened to the public, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford of
the news.
A by-election has been called in light
of the resignation news. Nomination
day is Nov. 17. The advanced vote will
be on Dec. 8 and the Election Day will
be held on Dec. 15 at the Civic Centre.

Recreation committee gets council support

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Tristan Periard, chair, and Jennifer Pekrul, secretary, for the
newly formed Regional Recreation Enhancement committee
spoke to council about their plans for future recreation in
the area.
The committee was formed due to the need for a multiuse facility in the area; something Periard said is long overdue. The committee would like to see Wheatland County, the
Strathmore and District Ag Society and the Town of Strathmore partner together to plan for a multi-use recreational
facility that will provide the amenities needed to support the
current and future needs of Strathmore and area.
The hope to start is to get a needs assessment done, and a
feasibility study. RC Strategies completed a needs assessment
a few years ago, and this would be an update on that study.
It will also include the feasibility study. Its expected to cost
approximately $80,000 which Periard said the committee is
hoping will be split against the partners and then the funding from the grants would go against those numbers.
By partnering together the committe can apply for an Alberta Community Partnership grant for the studies, which
will pay for a portion, if not all, of the costs.
Financially, with cooperation, we are able to work together to gain the funds needed. Together we will be eligible
for numerous grants and funds that are available for these
projects, said Periard.
With compiling that information and getting that needs
assessment done, we will know what our top priorities are
and how we (go) from there, what our main priorities will be
to start the building and how we will stage it and what kind
of funding we actually will need, so we can actually have a
cost to say this is what it will cost, this is what we will need
and go from there.

Councillor Rocky Blokland questioned the need for the

study.
I know what the town needs, I dont need a study done
for $80,000 to tell me what this town needs, said Blokland.
The projects have to begin with a feasibility study because otherwise theres a lot of protest as to what is needed
or some difference of opinions so-to-speak, said Pekrul.
When you bring in professionals and you actually have
blueprints drawn up, it makes it a much more real and sustainable goal than just saying this is what we need, no this is
what we need and the argument goes back and forth. This is
the beginning of what we truly need.
The committee will not be in charge or responsible financially for the needs assessment and were just asking those
involved if theyre willing to do it.
When looking to move into new communities people are
looking at recreation and what facilities are there. Infrastructure is going up but, said Pekrul, the committee feels the
need to play catch up and attract people to Strathmore.
Building this thing is one thing, getting it built another
thing, operating this thing is going to be the highest expense
on it. When you look at what weve got in town already with
the three facilities where its costing us $2.4 million a year,
I cannot imagine what this is going to cost, said Blokland.
He also stated that while at an Alberta Parks and Recreation conference a couple of years ago it was stated by one
community that pathways and walking were on the top of
their 20 item priority list, and a new Sportsplex was on the
bottom.
As always the issue will eventually come down to money,
and what can reasonably be spent on both the needs assessment and moving forward. At this time council has agreed
to support the committee on behalf of the town, and act as
a partner with the county and Ag Society, but have not committed to providing any funding at this time.

Ever wonder why we link colds with cold weather?

Our mothers always told us to button up.or youll
catch a cold. But the cold is caused by viruses not
cold weather. Colds are more common in winter
because people spend more time indoors, living
closer together giving the virus a better chance to
spread. Frequent hand washing will minimize that
spread.

RCMP updates council

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly was before
council to provide an update on the
RCMP over the last seven months. He
ran through stats from April 1, 2013 to
the end of October of the same year
and compared them to the same timeframe in 2014.
I should mention Im not a big stats
guy. Stats can be manipulated, they can
make them sound good or bad just depending on how you approach them,
said Reilly.
Im providing stats, I can give you
numbers, but when you say theyre
down 15 per cent, if its one out of 10
down, its 10 per cent so its not that big
of a thing, but if its 10 out of 100 its a
little more significant.
Collisions are down 15 per cent; impaired driving was down 25 per cent;
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle reported is down 50 per cent, last
year there were 14 reported, and this
year there were seven.
Liquor charges are up 40 per cent,
which Reilly said was from 15 to 28,
and could be anything from open liquor, to intoxicated in public places,
charges from bars being unruly and
refusing to leave and so on. Criminal
Code cases reported are down approximately 20 per cent; drug charges and
reports for drugs are similar this year
to last.
Assaults are down approximately 10
per cent, about 210 in 2013 to 180 in
2014. Thefts are also down by approximately 40 per cent, from 270 to 165.
Mischief by approximately 35 per cent,
from 240 to about 140; and reported
cases of break and enter are down
about 50 per cent, from about 60 last
year, to 30 in 2014.
Traffic violations and tickets are similar to this time last year excluding the
enhanced traffic program. Reilly said he
didnt want to get things confused, and
felt it was a separate issue to discuss.
There were a couple major incidences that occurred in the April to October timeframe. One was the suspicious

Well Make You

SMILE

death in May, with the body found in

an alleyway close to the library, and the
other were two armed robberies.
Cpl. Shannon White heads the Crime
Reduction Unit, out of which the DARE
and Neighbourhood Watch programs
are run, and the habitual offenders program. White keeps track of a total of
12 habitual offenders at one time. Over
the timeframe she has watched 22 total, some have reoffended, some have
left Strathmore, and others are incarcerated.
Reilly spoke of a couple of incidences
where Whites focus on the Crime Reduction Unit has been an asset.
Break and enters (B&E) are a big issue I think in any community at any
time. Weve certainly seen a decrease
in them, but there are a couple of incidences that happened, said Reilly.
We had a ring of B&E artists, or
break and enter guys, that were coming out from Calgary earlier in the year.
We worked with Calgary Police Service,
identified that these subjects were the
same and with their (CPS) help, and
our assistance working together, we
were able to get them located, identified, arrested and charged.
There was a second, even more worrisome incident with an individual going into senior residences. That person
was also identified, located, arrested
and charged.
Another case that came across Whites
desk was a case of vehicle thefts. It
started out as just a couple, and then
it was determined there were 10 vehicles stolen by the same perpetrators. At
the time the one of the suspects was
identified there were three vehicles that
hadnt been reported yet.
That crime reduction position has
really done a fabulous job, certainly has
exceeded my expectations, said Reilly.
Lastly he spoke about the enhanced

traffic program that finished at the end

of September.
The RCMP averaged five shifts a
month over the six-month period. There
were 306 violations in total, a majority
of which were for speeding, confirming
the beliefs by mayor and council that
most of the speeding does happen on
Hwy #1.
There were certainly other areas that
had other violations, but the main one
was Hwy #1. I think we all understood
that, and this kind of proved it, said
Reilly.
The number of violation tickets covered the cost of the program and was a
success in his opinion.
If you were interested in proceeding
with it, I think its a good thing, it certainly something that I believe showed
up in our stats that I talked to you
about. Collisions obviously are down
15 per cent, I think that was part of
that program and having members out
there, said Reilly.
He thinks by having the RCMP out
and being seen it has had an impact
on some other violation reductions in
town. One person pulled over for a
simple seatbelt ticket, then turned into
drugs, cash, four prohibited weapons
and three automatic rifles being seized.
That case is now before the courts.
He originally estimated about $4,000
a month for the program, but now
would suggest $2,400 with the shifts is
more likely. He would also like to see
an administrative cost of $400 added,
making it $2,800.
The support staff time to enter the
tickets, if looking at 50-60 per month, is
four to five hours, approximately $400,
which would also be paid for through
the tickets written.
Councillor Bob Sobol asked for the
program, and a new agreement to come
back to council in January.

SILLY DREAMS
I have a recurring silly nightmare.
Silly because it usually happens
before I go to sleep. Silly because
I have three kids under six who
without fail wake me before 7 a.m.
Yet, I often drift off to sleep aware
of this scary thought what if I
sleep through my alarm?
Maybe youve experienced that
gut wrenching realization that
youve slept through an alarm and
either missed an appointment or
put things in motion that will fill
your morning with rush and hurry;
leaving you less than your best to
face the important things of the
day. Maybe Im the only one.
Recently, Ive come to think of
this nightmare as a metaphor
for missing the good things of
life. Irenaeus, an early Christian
Father, wrote, the glory of God is
a human being fully alive.
Are you alert? Are you awake?
Are you alive to the promise and
potential that each day holds for
growth, significance and purpose?
I want to be. As a follower of
Jesus, I believe (with my head,
heart and whole life) that resurrection as a reality is not reserved for
eternity, church-speak, or just the
spiritual.
I believe it has concrete implica-

The Community Coats program is once again underway at
the Lambert Centre, 85 Lakeside
Blvd. The Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society
and Strathmore FCSS took over
the program last year, which
sees people donate their winter
clothing to those in need.
The program was initiated
because there was a need to assist needy families in providing

gently use winter clothing at no

cost, said Dave Collins, chairperson with the Society.
We accept all sorts of winter
clothing, jackets, coats, snowsuits, mitts, toques, scarves and
even kids winter boots.
The idea behind the program
is that people can leave their no
longer needed winter gear on
one of the coat racks in the hallway of the Lambert Centre, and
then anyone who needs a new
coat or other winter gear can go
and sort through and find what

they need.
Anyone can donate, there
are coats racks to leave your
donations and anyone can help
themselves at no cost, said Collins.
The program is for the benefit
of all residents both in the town
and Wheatland County. The
Community Coats program will
run from now until the early
March. Winter may not be here
yet, but its not too far away and
now is a great time to get your
donations in.

Shelter to make changes

after donations thrown out
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

After dropping off some items to the Community Crisis Societys womens shelter, one Strathmore resident was a little heartbroken to find
out the items had been thrown in the garbage.
Amburlea Carlson had called ahead about donating items, and was told to put them against the
garage, and not obstruct the walkway. She did
as instructed, and noticed the items sat there for
several days. Then one day she noticed them in
the dumpster.
I know it was a mistake, it was just frustrating
to see formula that they could have used, and
diapers and clothes and new (high) chairs tossed
away, it was upsetting, said Carlson.
I cant say how it happened but certainly it
was a mistake, said Penny Glenn, program manager with the society.
There has been extensive work happening at
the shelter, with the remodeling of the backyard,
and lots of service people and construction workers coming and going. Carlson wonders if maybe
one of the construction workers tossed items in
the garbage, and clarified she doesnt think anyone from the shelter did.
I think it was just a mistake, but I dont think
it was a mistake on any of their staffs part. I think
it was probably just mixed up with construction
stuff, other than that I cant think of anything
they are doing wrong because they do such a
good job, said Carlson.
Glenn and Carlson have spoken a few times
since the incident happened.

She made a couple of suggestions which I

think are excellent and were going to follow
those up, said Glenn.
One of them was that we have signage right at
the shelter, in addition to on our website, regarding donations, of anything, cash, goods, whatever. (The sign will state) that no items are to be left
in front of the garages or anywhere in the yard
of the shelter without approval from the office.
There will be her and one other person who
will take those calls, and it will only be the two
of them accepting it and explaining why they can
or cant take items.
She had some valid points that I think could
be incorporated easily, and were going to work
on those, said Glenn.
Carlson said the response from the society
to her concerns was quick, she was ensured it
would never happen again and was satisfied with
the response she received.
Thats really important that people still support it, accidents do happen but its upsetting
because I think everybody looks at one isolated
incident and just labels the shelter, theyre not
counting all the good things theyve done, said
Carlson.
Another thing she and Carlson talked about is
updating the wish list on the website monthly,
outlining what the shelter is in need of at the
time, and whatever the shelter will never be able
to accept. The shelter will also keep up the items
that they really need, so even if the list doesnt
change from month to month they will make sure
it has a fresh look and that people will be able to
donate exactly whats needed for clients.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS -Tony and Anne Heuver

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Tonys family originated in Olst, which
is in East Central Holland, where he was
born in 1935, the second eldest of 12
children. Little is known of the family
history, beyond his great-grandfather.
Anne was born in the same area in 1938,
and her maiden name was Nyenkamp.
She came from a family of six boys
and six girls, but after her father died
during World War Two at the age of 48,
her mother was left to raise all 12 children on her own. The
youngest was four
months, Anne was
four years old, and
the eldest was 17. A
terribly hard time for
her mother, with the
Germans taking over
the house, and forcing the family to live
in only two rooms.
Both Tony and
Anne attended school in Holland. Tony
received six years of horticultural training in Holland, while Anne took home
economics.
In 1959, Tony came to Alberta to work
at a farm, returning to Holland frequently on vacations. In the fall of 1962, on
one of these trips he met Anne, and
they were married in Holland in February 1964. This marriage resulted in
Tony and Anne having twin boys - Marcel who lives in Maryland, and Eric who
now owns and operates Eagle Lake Turf
Farms. They also have two daughters,
Anita and Patricia. Anita co-owns and
operates Eagle Lake Nurseries, with her
father. Patricia worked at the nursery for
a number of years, before moving to Ontario. They also have 10 grandchildren.
After their wedding in Holland in
1964, Tony and Anne moved to Calgary,
where he and his brother Henry, started
Foothills Landscaping Ltd. Eventually,
Tony and Henry expanded the company to the Strathmore area, where they

purchased raw land, and started growing sod. They seeded and grew the best
lawn grasses available in the mid-1960s,
which included Kentucky Blue Grass
and Fescue. As the crop matured it was
cut and sold to customers in Calgary and
surrounding areas. When they first started out, a neighbour advised hed lived
there all his life, and been unable to
grow trees. So, their chances of growing
sod and nursery plants would be well
nigh impossible. As Tony said, back in
the mid-1960s there was no irrigation,
now there is - and with irrigation one
can grow almost anything. This is the
main reason that the
Eagle Lake Nurseries
have been very successful. In 1970, Tony
incorporated Eagle
Lake Nurseries, and
Henry remained as
the owner of Foothills
Landscaping
Ltd. Tony was one of
the first Albertans to receive Journeyman Landscape Gardener Certification
in the 1980s. The sod farm, which had
been part of Eagle Lake Nurseries for 28
years, split from the main company in
1998, and is now owned and operated
by son Eric, as Eagle Lake Turf Farms
Ltd. They advised that the key to the
nurseries success is their hardworking
and dedicated staff, some of whom have
been with them since the early 1980s.
They have 20 full-time employees and
more than 50 seasonal employees.
Tony has served as a board member
and president of the Provincial Nursery
and Landscaping Association. He was
also a long time member of Knights of
Columbus.
Anne spent her life being a mother to
their four children, volunteered with Sacred Heart Parish, is a member of the
Catholic Womens League (45 years), and
served for 30 years as a member of the
Strathmore Hospital Auxiliary.
Tony and Anne used to invite the resi-

All Genres

dents from extended care to visit their

garden and home for tea during the
summer months.
Tony and Anne have enjoyed traveling
throughout Canada, the United States
and the World. They hope to continue
this in the years to come, as there are
many more places they would like to
visit.
The biggest changes theyve seen in
this area since 1964 are the population
growth, and the paving and twinning of
the Trans Canada Hwy.

SABRINA KOOISTRA
SHS Spartan Council

Imagine if you were not able to attend school. Your family
is poor and is not able to afford tuition. You lack the ability
to read, write, or do basic math. You are almost 40 and have
been employed at the same low skilled job since you were
16-years-old. The days are long and difficult and the wage is
dismal; just enough to get by.
Hundreds of people live this reality.
School and access to education changes the course of a
life. What is even more unfortunate though, is in developing
countries around the world, affordability is not always the
reason for children not attending school. In many countries,
girls are barred or discouraged from attending school. They
are banished to a life with no freedom of choice and are
forced to stay at home and do what their husbands tell
them, which would include having children, cooking, and
cleaning.
This year, Strathmore High School (SHS) has taken on an
initiative to send a Kenyan girl named Vivian Ngeeti to high
school (four years) and needs to raise $10,000 to make it
happen.
Vivian Ngeeti is 16-years-old and lives in a community
about five hours outside of Nairobi called Oloirien. Vivian is
one of eight siblings and wishes to educate her family and
fellow community members with the knowledge that she
will acquire while attending school. Vivian is very passionate
about education and is planning to pursue teaching as her
career after graduation.
Kisaruni is the school that we will be sending Vivian to.
It is a school built by Free the Children in the Narok
District of Kenya, and is specifically for girls aged 14 to
18. Their mission is to provide education for girls who may
not be able to pay for tuition at another school. To ensure
that families are dedicated to the best education for their
daughter, Kisaruni has adopted a policy of interviewing the
parents before accepting a child as a student. Through this
process, Kisaruni verifies that the girls families will support

them through the four years of schooling up until

graduation.
The school has concentrated on providing the
very best education for the attending students in
many ways. All of the teachers that are hired at
Kisaruni are very well qualified as well as experts
in their field. As part of the curriculum, she will
undertake projects and coaching in leadership,
receive three meals every day as opposed to
the one-meal standard at primary schools, all to
prepare her for becoming a teacher. The school
also includes a library and a variety of clubs,
similar to what we have here in Canadian schools,
and has a medical centre stationed directly beside
it.
Kisaruni will give Vivian a chance that many
girls like her will never get. Many of the girls
that are already attending Kisaruni are very
driven in their education. Along the pathway
to the main school doors, the students have
posted inspirational quotes and messages about
education for each other. What is even more
amazing is the excitement of these girls to receive
an education and be attending Kisaruni. All of the
girls wake up at four oclock in the morning to be
ready for the start of classes at five a.m. The day
usually ends around 10 at night, and even though
these are long days for these girls, they have
requested to be able to get up an hour earlier to
start classes at four.
With our support, we can brighten Vivians
future and will assist her in achieving her goals

and aspirations for the future.

Throughout the year, groups within SHS such
as Spartan Council and Me to We will be working
hard to raise the $10,000 needed and ask that you
support us with your finances by purchasing a
Subway discount card. One card is priced at $10
and even at the time of your very first purchase,
you will receive a free six-inch sub and nine
other discounts following. This discount card is
great for families and athletes that have a busy
schedule and need to grab a quick bite to eat. It
also promotes a healthy lifestyle when sometimes
preparing a nutritious meal on the go becomes
very difficult.
Throughout the year, SHS will be hosting
different events and will be giving students and
community members alike a chance to support
Vivians schooling.
Purchasing a Subway card or simply making
a donation may seem small, but it will help to
create something extremely powerful and vital
... an education. When girls like Vivian have a
chance like this, they have the power to speak up
for rights and freedoms that thousands of other
girls have been denied. They will have access to
a greater variety of careers, and most of all, they
will experience a major difference in their quality
of life.
If you are interested in supporting our cause,
please contact Cheryl Davidson at cheryl.
davidson@ghsd75.ca for more information and
about purchasing a Subway card.

Crisis gala returns

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The annual Community Crisis Society Harvest
Gala and Auction returns on Nov. 1. November
is also the beginning of National Family Violence
Prevention Month.
This year marks 21 years for the event, which
fundraises to provide for the women, children,
and sometimes men, that come through the shelter
doors. With the almost daily reports of deaths of
innocent victims and arrests of prominent sports
figures due to domestic violence staff at the
shelter know that their work is just as important
than ever.
Its continuing. People are still dying in
Alberta, and Alberta has one of the highest rates
of domestic violence in Canada so I think its
important that there are services and a safe place
for families to teach them how to keep safe, and
to support them, said executive Director Karen
Pease.
We really believe in helping the whole family,
we work with perpetrators, we work with victims,
and we work with children.
Some of the familiar and favourite items are
back for the raffle this year like the helicopter ride,
Flames tickets, and a handmade quilt. This year
there are also more experience related items - a
wine tasting for two in Calgary, skiing in Canmore
and restaurant and hotel tickets. There are also a
number of surprise items that will be announced

the night of the event.

We have some of the old favourites, and of
course the cream can, said Pease.
We got a cream can donated to us and every
year someone bids for the right to put it in their
place of business. Its usually one of the highest
bided items at our auction and people usually
collect money for us throughout the year, so it
has become a tradition.
The cream can almost looks like the Stanley
Cup, its getting plastered with whos donated and
the amount they brought in, so its a pretty cool
item. Were really proud of that tradition and that
weve continued it.
Over the years the cream can has gotten around,
its been in doctors offices, lawyers offices, and
last year was at Global Training Centre. Many
other businesses have also won the cream can and
displayed it over the years.
The Harvest Gala and Auction will be held at
the Travelodge this year. The society plans to
unveil how previous donations have helped with
a backyard makeover at the shelter. It will be a
peaceful and fun environment for the families.
Tickets are $60 per person and available online
at www.strathmoreshelter.com. Anyone wishing
to support but unable to attend, can also make a
donation using the same link. More details about
the event are also available on the website under
the How to Help/Events page. Proceeds from the
evening will be used to help families impacted by
family violence.

SHS Spartan Council

During the Thanksgiving and Halloween
season, most people have bellies full of delicious
food and candy. Yet there are some people in our
community who lack some of the basic necessities.
This October, the Strathmore Womens Shelter
has been facing a shortage of non-perishable food
and is continuing to even now.
In response to their need, the Strathmore High
School Me to We Club and Spartan Council are
taking part in a Halloween food drive called We
Scare Hunger.

On Halloween night between 7-9 p.m., high

school students may stop by your door to ask for
non-perishable donations. Right now, there are
more people in need of our help than we might be
aware of. Did you know that 870 million people
spend the entire duration of the day hungry? In
response, usage for food banks and shelters has
risen by 20 per cent in the last 10 years.
The women in the Strathmore Womens Shelter
are just a few of the millions of people who are in
need of nutritious food and we are asking you to
donate food to help families and women get back
on their feet. You can assist them in receiving a
simple but vital entity a meal.

Harper Government supports Canadian Rotary efforts

FROM THE OFFICE OF KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of
State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the announcement of the
Harper Governments support toward a project
implemented by the Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development (CRCID) in
Honduras and Guatemala.
The Government of Canada has worked in collaboration with Canadian Rotarians since the late
1970s and with the CRCID since 1986 to partner
on projects to improve the lives of people around
the globe. The Rotary approach of communitylevel fundraising increases the engagement of individual Canadians and strengthens the bonds of
friendship between the developed and developing
world. Canadian Rotarians and the Harper Government have worked closely together on eradicating polio.
Prime Minister Harper launched the Pennies

and More for Polio fundraising drive to support

the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a global
program initiated by Rotarians.
By increasing access to basic education in Guatemala, and by improving water and sanitation
systems and providing access to microfinance in
Honduras, this new project will provide increased
opportunities for vulnerable people to enjoy improved household income and health.
As the Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, I
have always been impressed by the remarkable
work of local Rotary Clubs in our riding. I am
proud that our Conservative Government is able
to assist these grassroots efforts, Minister Sorenson says.
One of the goals of Canadas Strategy for Engagement in the Americas is to increase security
and improve socio-economic conditions for the
most vulnerable groups in the region.
Quick Facts
Sixty per cent of Hondurans and 54 per cent

of Guatemalans live in poverty, while 18 per cent of Hondurans and 14 per cent of Guatemalans live in extreme poverty,
surviving on less than US$1.25/day.
Canada views increased engagement through trade and
commercial-economic ties as one of the best ways to promote sustainable economic growth in the Americas.
Canada is committed to targeting the most effective ways
to reduce maternal and child deaths in developing countries,
including by improving access to quality water and sanitation to reduce the burden of leading diseases.
On May 28-30, 2014, in Toronto, the Prime Minister
hosted the Saving Every Woman, Every Child: Within Arms
Reach summit. At the summit, Canada committed $3.5 billion
in support for the period 20152020 and renewed global
momentum to advance maternal, newborn and child health
as a global priority beyond 2015.

the resources we have as small churches.

I really liked the idea of tailoring our
worship and our ministry to best meet the
needs of our community.
The Rt. Rev. Greg Kerr-Wilson, Bishop of
the Diocese of Calgary said Martin was the
speaker at their Synod and Clergy gatherings earlier this year and when the topic
of how to help small churches came up,
Martin was a natural choice.
Its wonderful how he [Martin] uses stories to teach in such a brilliant way to touch
hearts and minds, helping us to be more
fully what Christ has called us to be as His
church, said Bishop Kerr-Wilson.
A small congregation is defined as one
with less than 100 people attending on a
Sunday. Roughly half the congregations in
the Diocese of Calgary fall into this category.

Rosebud School of the Arts honors students and graduates

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud School of the Arts celebrated the ROSAs Recognizing Outstanding Student Achievement Sept. 28,
honoring their 30 students with over 40
scholarships and bursaries, and graduating four women from its four-year
program.
The ROSAs reveal the heart of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) like no
other event, says Maki Van Dyke, RSAs
registrar.
Shes thankful for new scholarships
created this year. A new donor stepped
forward, for instance, to continue an
award renamed the RSA Spiritual Leadership Award.
The Lois Kenney Haskayne Entrance
Scholarship was also created, awarding
a total of $5,000 to one or more first
year students.
Scholarships of $31,450 were awarded. An additional $2,487 went to students working at Rosebud Mercantile, and $13,235 in BMO Production
Awards to students in Rosebud Theatre
productions. In total, RSA students received $47,172.50 in one afternoon.
Scholarships tell the student I believe in you, Van Dyke says.
At the ROSAs, students meet the donors who gave their scholarships, so
they give back by building a relationship.
At the ceremony, Marie Isaman spoke
on behalf of other donors, encouraging
students to make a difference, no matter where you are.
Graduate Chrissie Muldoon thanked
the donors.
Scholarships are about so much
more than money, she said. Sometimes
its hard to get support for working in
the arts, even from friends and family,
but scholarship donors embrace and
affirm the authentic expressions of our
hearts.
Guest speaker Terry White, RSA
board member and former University
of Calgary president, told students and
graduates they have potential to make
a difference.
(We live in) the best of times and

worst of times, he said, and RSAs mission meets our need for uplifting, faithbased stories that bring healing.
Paul Muir, RSAs education director,
said the school had even more to celebrate than usual that weekend. RSA
had just signed a new transfer agreement with Briercrest Bible College, allowing RSA students to transfer a full
year of credits toward a recognized degree.
The high point of the ceremony was
an individual address and slide show
for each graduate, before bestowing
the title Fellowship of Rosebud School
of the Arts (FRSA).
Christina Muldoon, said Muir, is a
powerful, courageous, vulnerable and
transparent young woman, whos held
firm to the truth that shes worthy and
has purpose.
Muldoon said in an e-mail shes
learned what it is to be an actor.
She was challenged to learn that,
although the students are big fish in
little ponds, Rosebud is a little pond
full of big fish! But she knows I have
great worth as an artist.

Childrens Vision Month

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

October is Childrens Vision Month, and the Alberta Association of Optometrists and the Library
Association of Alberta are reminding parents to
take their children in for an eye exam.
While many people may not think of it, its
important to book a comprehensive eye exam
for your child before entering Grade 1. Statistics
have shown that fewer than 22 per cent of Alberta children entering Grade 1 have had a comprehensive eye exam, even though one in four
children have vision problems significant enough
to affect their ability to learn.
Parents mistakenly believe they would know
if their child was having difficulty with their eyesight, says, Dr. Michelle Duke of Strathmore Vision Clinic in a press release.
But what most parents dont realize, is that
children dont show obvious symptoms because
they assume everyone sees the way they do.
Approximately 60 per cent of children with literacy issues actually have an undiagnosed vision
problem, says Karen Hildebrandt, president of
the Library Association of Alberta in a release.
As champions for childrens literacy and education, we feel it is our responsibility to educate
as many parents as possible about the important
link between vision and learning.
Poor vision has been known to delay a childs
development, which can also make learning and

a scavenger hunt together to find their
pumpkin in the park.
Once they have found it, they have
the opportunity to carve them and take
them home.
The Family and Community Support
Services (FCSS) committee were discussing alternative activities to engage
families and the turnout was so successful last year that they decided to do
it again.
Were talking about other things we
can do for families in Strathmore and
another community had done something similar. So I got the idea from another FCSS office and adapted to what
Strathmore would want, said Catherin Walsh, FCSS Strathmore director.
The Great Pumpkin hunt is put on by
Strathmore FCSS and the Youth Club of
Strathmore and the cost is $7 per child.
The objective is that the children will

numbered pumpkin that was assigned
to them. After that they will receive
treats and hot chocolate.
The children will come, well have
all the pumpkins numbered, and they
will be put out in Kinsman Park. Theyll
register with us (and) be given a number, then the children and their parents
go and find their pumpkin, said Walsh.
Once they find their pumpkins, they
bring them back and well have carving
kits and they can stay and carve their
pumpkins and enjoy music, hot chocolate and treats.
On Saturday, Nov 1, there will be
Pumpkins in the Park event also put on
by FCSS to display the carving creativity around Kinsmen Park.
Were doing Pumpkins in the Park,
and what that is, is for anybody who
would like to bring their carved pumpkin to Kinsmen Park and drop it off.
There will be a trailer there where they
can leave the pumpkins then we will
disperse them in the park and light
them up from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., said
Walsh.
Registration deadline for the hunt

Non-resident rate removed

from Family Centre rate fees
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The discussion on whether or not
people outside of town should pay a
different rate to use the Family Centre
was once again argued when the Fees
Bylaw Amendment was brought forward to council on Oct. 15.
Each year town administration, and
town departments, review the bylaw to
ensure everything is accurate and upto-date. A few changes were suggested,
and a recommendation of third reading
was given by administration.
Councillor Brad Walls questioned the
non-resident fee that is charged to anyone not living in the town using the
arena.
As of last year it was stated that the
fee brought an additional $15,700 of
revenue.
Im not sure I can support us
charging our rural non-resident fee to
Wheatland County residents, or to residents that are not a part of the Town of
Strathmore. My rationale for this, is obviously on average it costs us about $2
million to run those facilities, the little
bit of revenue we get back, I wonder if
we couldnt use that as a bit of an opportunity to start working closer with
our rural partners, said Walls.
The resident fee for ice rentals per
hour for youth is $128.40, and $186.95
for an adult during peak hours. The
non-resident rates are $148.30 for
youth, and $226.85 for adults. Seasonal
passes for residents range from $32.75
to $130.90, and from $45.80 to $143.95
for non-residents.
This isnt necessarily about the
amount of money. This is about being fair to our taxpayers. If we were
not to charge non-residents an extra
charge, than that would mean our nonresidents that come to our facility actually pay less than our taxpayers, said
Councillor Bob Sobol.
He argued that Strathmore residents
get hit twice, once on their taxes and
on their use of the facility. Sobol said
this is about being fair to Strathmore
taxpayers who are paying for these facilities.
Councillor Pat Fule questioned if
maybe the way it is named is the problem, and suggested maybe it should be
called a user fee. Councillor Denise Peterson said while she appreciated what
Sobol was saying, another issue is that
70 per cent of the hockey players, and
approximately 75 per cent of ringette
players in this community are using the
rural community arenas and are not

paying more to do so.

We need to work really hard to rid
ourselves if the divisiveness that this
has wrought for $15,000. I acknowledge Councillor Sobol makes a point,
but I just dont think that it has value,
said Peterson.
A motion to remove the non-resident
fee for the Family Centre and change
the name of resident fee and nonresident fee titles to just user fee was
given, and passed.
Another motion made in the fire services section of the bylaw to include
behind the term per hour the words or
portion thereof because the charges in
there were per hour but if it is only
half an hour then the charge would be
less. The motion was passed.
Also discussed were the rates for
the cemetery and burying a loved one.
One concern raised was when someone loses a member of the family; they
will have to pick and choose what day
to get buried. There are additional
charges for weekends and holidays,
and in the winter.
Municipal Clerk Jennifer Sawatzky
said the weekend and holiday fees are
the overtime fees for staff to go in and
help with the burials. The winter costs
is because it is more difficult to dig
graves, and sometimes other contractors have to be hired to do the work
for them.
Councillor Rocky Blokland wondered if it wouldnt be better to have
one flat charge for burials year round.
Councillor Brad Walls made a motion
for a flat $500 fee. That motion was defeated.
The bylaw has only made it to second reading, and will not be passed
until it receives third reading. It will
be brought back to the Nov. 5 meeting.

An offensive outburst in High River had the
Wheatland Kings on an ultimate high with an
8-5 thrashing over the Flyers on Oct. 17. Then
on Saturday night, against Coaldale at home,
there seemed to be a lack of identity and unnecessary penalties being taken in a 5-3 loss.
This has left head coach Jeremy Blumes and
his staff still looking for consistency in his
teams performances and the amount of time
spent in the box.
Weve been scoring goals on a fairly consistent basis. When we play with speed, teams have
a tough time keeping up with us, said Blumes.
The game was good in the sense that we got
contribution from all four lines.
Penalties continued to be an issue that has
plagued the team the past few games and it will
be something that needs to be addressed if the
Kings are to be successful the rest of the season.
We dont have the time to make incremental
improvements in terms of discipline. Were either disciplined or not, said Blumes.
The High River game was a positive step in
that they know they can score goals and there
were some players that put in a full effort.
Keenan Ogle, not because he had the hat
trick, but because he skated hard, played with
pace, finished every check. Devon Westby
played his first game of the regular season and
hes a guy thats played at a high level and he
has that leadership quality that is certainly going to add to our dressing room, said Blumes.

Goal scorers were Ogle with three, Brayden

Beckley with two, while Kirby Ruzesky, Chris
Williams and Brett Dumaine each added one.
The next night against Coaldale, the Kings
gave the Copperheads too much time and space
where they capitalized.
I think you got to give the other team credit. I think theyve got a good top line and are
opportunistic a little bit of time and space,
theyre going to find the back of the net and
we gave them too much time and space, said
Blumes.
Special teams can determine the outcome of a
game and the Kings started to show glimpses of
how effective their power play can be.
I mean you want to have an effective power
play with the way the game is called, special
teams is going to make a big difference. It was
nice to have Ryan Grasdahl score a goal because
he is consistently one of our hardest-working
and most disciplined players, said Blumes.
Ruzesky, Grasdahl and Westby scored in the
loss.
Kings defensemen Justin Zeiler agrees that if
the team can use their speed, they will see more
results.
The positives that we can take out is we use
our speed, crash the net, fore check and creating turnovers, no team can catch us. Then we
start letting off thats where it comes down to
(us) trailing a game, said Zeiler.
He admits that the team as a whole needs to
stay disciplined and not play as individuals.
We just got to be better disciplined as a team
and play together as one, said Zeiler.

The Wheatland Warriors
used an offensive onslaught
to defeat the Taber Golden

Strathmore Family Centre.
We were doing some good
things out there, we were on
the body. Weve been kind
of fighting them to do that
lately aggressive on the
puck, still need work there
though, said head coach
Cody Brown. The guys were
relentless not losing battles,
it was a decent effort for
sure. I mean we definitely
played a weaker team there
so thats tough in a way.
Despite the lopsided win
the Warriors know they still
have some work to do.
We only have two or
three core things weve been
throwing at them lately. Getting the puck out is one, our
initial fore-check was decent,
but the puck shifts somewhere and we dont have
guys going as hard as they
should be to retrieve it, said
Brown.
The win was a collective
group effort as everyone
played well in the game.
Brown wants to emphasize to his players, though,
to have more of a consistent
60-minute effort.
Weve been battling that,
just cant get a full 60 minutes

Bisons sweep weekend

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons swept both weekend home
games Oct. 18-19 and currently sit fifth in the AMHL
south division standings. They were able to edge
the Knights of Columbus Pats 4-2 on Oct. 18 and
scored six unanswered goals to beat the Medicine
Hat Tigers 6-2 the following day.
The coaching staff was thrilled to see how much
quicker the team is moving the puck and how much
more aggressive the players are at attacking the net.
Weve been working on moving the puck quick
and trusting each other. In the second period we
started to move the puck a lot better, said Doug
Raycroft, Bisons assistant coach.
The results showed for the Bisons as they were
able to produce offence, but also battled back hard
in their own end against the Tigers.
We were supporting each other a lot better, so
we had to work a little harder coming back in our
own end. As soon as we scored a couple of goals, it
changed the game, said Raycroft.
After a playing the last half of the opening frame
with energy, the Bisons spotted the Tigers a 2-0 lead
and used their speed and size to their advantage
We always want to play with speed. (In) the first
period we struggled with that and we had some
penalties too that slowed us down, but the first shift
(in the second) we moved the puck really well, got
rewarded and a goal really quick and it just seem
to take off from there, said Raycroft. I think this
was the best game of the year so far, moving into
next week for practice, we can focus on a lot of the

good things we were doing the way we want to

play like the second and third periods. Its good for
the guys to see how well we do the things we want
to do.
Second year defenseman Sebastien Kilcommons
was the most thrilled player on the team after the
win as he was able to notch his first-ever league
goal.
I was really excited, when I first saw it go into
the net, it was hard to believe it actually went in,
said Kilcommons. We really wanted to have a good
start off to the season. Its really nice to see the team
come together with good chemistry.
Other Bison scorers were Trygve Many Guns with
two, while Markus Lavallee, Cameron Shorrock and
Gary Haden each added a goal.
On the previous night versus the Pats, the Bisons
had a hard-fought contest and used the big ice surface to create chances.
We played pretty smart, we were moving the
puck pretty well (on Saturday) too, but not quite
as good as (Sunday). It was a hard-working game
and we outworked them, said Raycroft. Its Olympic-sized ice here so when you move the puck and
youre skating, then good things are going to happen. On the power play were just rolling the lines
and everyone is getting a chance at this time of the
year to show what they can do and what we would
say is our fourth line scored two power play goals.
Davis Sheldon scored twice in the win, while
Haden and Lavallee each added a goal.
The Bisons are on the road next weekend when
they take on St. Albert Raiders at 3:45 p.m. on Oct.
25 and then the Pats on Oct. 26 at 11:45 a.m.

The Holy Cross Collegiate
Junior B boys and girls volleyball teams held their
home tournament on Oct.
18.
The girls pushed the final
game to the third and deciding set, but lost to Rundle
College in what was a tightly contested match.
Girls team captain Hope
Given thought her team
gave it their best shot in the
final and were right there
the whole game.
We played really well, I
think everyone who played
the last set really improved
(from) the second set where
everyone was playing their
best too, said Given.
There were strengths seen
all over the court for the
girls. The ball was passed
around really well during
sets on the Hawks side of
the net.
We called the ball really
well and when we were in
the middle passing the ball
back, we did well, said Given.
Given added that coming
into the tournament they

wanted to try their best and

whatever happens will happen and team huddles always helped.
Boys coach Angela MacLean was impressed with
her teams effort and their
vast improvement not only
in the tournament, but the
season.
This is a triple ball tournament, the purpose of
that is more touches and
hits, and the boys really improved in their passing this
year. Today was a great improvement in our service,
said MacLean. I have a lot
of first year players and they
all showed major development in passing and setting
the whole year.
Leadership proved to be
one of the strengths of the
boys team this year.
I had a couple strong
leaders in Grade 8 and in
this last tournament a lot of
my players developed. The
boys were talkative on the
court and were very positive, she said.
MacLean now has seen
the boys learn the basics
and for next year can work
on more systems with players in set positions.

Spartans places fourth in provincials

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Spartans cross country
team had a very accomplished
year with a fourth place finish
at the provincials in Okotoks on
Oct.18
Coach Paul Sonsteby could not
be happier with his team finishing higher than last year and
the individual achievements by
some of the runners.
Id say we had a better overall
championship than last year. We
finished fourth in the province
for 3A schools and highest in
South Central Zones, said Sonsteby
The Spartans ran the race with
nine runners and that was low
numbers compared to the banner winning Eagle Butte.
Eagle Butte took the banner
this year for 3a schools but we
were really happy of coming in
fourth with only nine runners is
a good result considering Eagle
Butte had 23, said Sonsteby.
One of the reasons that the
Spartans only had nine runners
were some injuries to the seniors
prior to provincials.

We had a couple of injuries to

senior boys in the week leading
up. Liam Schoepp wasnt able to
run due to a leg injury and Kyle
Foster ran despite a leg injury, so
they did okay but not as good as
they could have, said Sonsteby.
The best finish of the day was
Karly Larson who came in 37th
out of 110. I like to see anything
above that 50 range. Karly ran
a time of 19:30 and she did not
have her bib on and got a little
bit concerned with that and was
trying talk to me and the other
coach, I think that maybe interfered with the flow of her run a
little bit.
Despite the distractions, she
was able to leave it all out on the
course.
She left a really good sprint in
there and she gained about five
spots, getting from the 40s to the
30s just on her sprint at the end
of the race, really strong finish,
said Sonsteby.
Karly is one of those all
around athletes but shes really
this year been running at the
best I have ever seen, just her
sheer athleticism pushed her
into those extra spots. She strat-

egized well in her race like there

were a couple of narrow spots
and she tried to run parallel with
another runner so that it would
make it more difficult for runners behind to pass on a hill.
Mackenzie Bain and Martina
Vergouwan both had strong
showings in the junior categories as they both put strong efforts on the track.
Mackenzie ran an extremely
smart race, Martina is all around
gifted runner. There was a bottle
neck in one point of their race
and Mackenzie was picking his
spots, he passed underneath me
while I was on this bridge and I
saw him weaving in and out to
gain three or four sports here
and there, said Sonsteby.
Martina Vergouwan, same
thing a very strong runner and
good pace in the end.
Another notable was Maria
Fanning, who was more of hill
runner and was faced with a
lot of larger flat spots that she
worked through to by taking advantage of those hills so no one
would pass her.
Sonsteby really likes to see
sportsmanship on his team and

a great start

a nice testament that hes

one of the few people to get
a sportsmanship pins, said
Sonsteby.
He also added that the
team had some personal
bests and got stronger as the
year went along.
Many of the runners that
had progressive runs this
year are only going to get
better.

KELLANS VISIT TO ASPEN CROSSING RAILWAY

Story and Pictures by Glen Brosinsky

Every once in a while, something or someone so special occurs in ones life, that makes
you beam inside, for days and days. At Aspen Crossing last week (Oct 10th) near Mossleigh, we had the fortune to host a special young fellow who loves trains (what boy
doesnt!!) Kellan brought his mom Robin and a family friend (Taralea) too. You need to
know that Kellan is special; you see, he is battling Leukemia and taking chemotherapy
along with special meds to win this fight. Kellan is only 5! It goes without saying that it
breaks our hearts to see any child hurting. So, when we were approached by Taralea and
asked if Kellan could come to Aspen Crossing to pound a spike(large railway nail) in to
the tracks, we just had to do all we could for this courageous little guy. With that, Kellan
not only had the opportunity to pound in a gold spike at a special location he will always be able to find, he was also presented with a pin-striped vest and hat reminiscent
of what railroaders wore, given a tour or the railway store, museum, a walk through a
caboose, and a ride in a locomotive too. The biggest surprise and visible joy for Kellan came when he was asked to blow the locomotive airhornwow, that was l-o-u-d!
The staff at Aspen Crossing hopes Kellans day lives in his dreams all the way through
adulthood. Kellan, we are so proud of you; please come back and visit us often and
blow the horn any time you want. Everyone at Aspen Crossing looks forward to your
next visit and a ride in the passenger cars next year.

U16 Ice

The Strathmore Ice U16 started league
play on the weekend. They hosted the
Bow Valley Bold on Saturday, Oct. 18
in the afternoon, in a very entertaining
game. Bow Valley opened the scoring,
but by the end of the first period, the Ice
had fought back to take a 5-4 lead. At the
final whistle the score was even at eight.
There were many beautiful goals as well
as some great saves at both ends. Nineteen penalties were called in the contest
as neither team wanted to give an edge
to the other. The Ice team members are:
Erin Reynolds, Holland Kelly, Becky
Driver, Kaylin Larson, Rachel McCollister, Bri Olson, Julia Bishop, Jemma Warrack, Tatum Wathen, Kirsten Grin, Laura
Taplin, Brooklyn Reinhart and Ashley
Lecavalier. Coach, Stephan Lecavalier,
Assistant Coaches, Sonny Warrick and
Jan Wathen and Manager, Jill Gron
On Sunday, Oct. 19, the Ice traveled
to Rockyford. This turned out to be another closely contested game.
The first period ended in a 3-3 tie. After a few lead changes in the second,
Rockyford emerged on top with a score
of 9-8. Again the girls fought hard to the
final whistle. If these two games are a
preview to the year ahead, it should be
a great season for the girls.

Crushers crusade
The Strathmore Ice Crushers
(U14B) played their first league
game against the Airdrie Sting
at Genesis Place on Oct. 18.
The girls have a small ringette
team this year and had to
skate extra hard. In the end,
they pulled in an 8-3 win over
the Sting.

Swim club president rewarded

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore swim club president Lloyd
Schoepp was recognized on Sept. 20 by
Swim Alberta as Adminstration of the
Year at a banquet in Calgary.
Schoepp was very surprised and honoured to receive the award, but admits
he could not have done it without his
support staff.
The support I have and my wife who
has been the registrar of the club for
several years and does a lot of work to
make the club a success, said Schoepp.
For me I think its a great honour to be
recognized for my volunteer service to
the club. Ive been president for the last
eight years and ever since weve moved
to Strathmore, weve been involved in
swimming and helping to support the
club.
Since taking over the club, he has
seen a lot of positive development
among swimmers and the increased en-

rolment of kids in the club.

I think we started with 20-plus kids
and now were up to around 100, said
Schoepp. We now have swimmers
(who) swim at a Western Canadian level. When we first started we didnt have
anybody at provincials, now we have
several going.
He will be stepping down after this
season as president and moving on into
more of provincial role with swimming.
This my last year as president and
I was actually elected to the Swim Alberta board of directors at a sporting
organization level. So Ill be transitioning into more of a governance role for
Alberta as a whole and leaving the club
in good hands, said Schoepp.
Currently, Schoepp is doing the dual
role for the rest of the season before he
moves into his full-time position.
He is still going to work with the
Swim Sharks to continue to develop
athletes and build a strong base for kids
in this community.

Seniors ousted in playoffs; peewees clinch first

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartans high school football season came
to an end on Friday, Oct. 17 at the hands of Medicine Hat
High School with a 36-6 defeat in the first round of the playoffs.
The difference in the game is that the Spartans were slow
at the start of the game and just could not capitalize in the
red zone.
Right off the bat, our intensity level didnt match theirs at
the beginning of the game. We gave up two touchdowns in
the first quarter and we gave up another one in the second
and then we scored, and after that the guys woke up and
started playing defence, said Holloway. I thought throughout the game we were pretty much evenly matched. We just
didnt capitalize on the opportunities we had in the red zone
(where) we were five times and only got one score out of it,
said Holloway.
He added that within the 10-yard line there were a lot of
dropped balls in the end zone.
He also admits that a year of experience will help a lot of
these players develop for next season.
A lot of guys on the team are sophomores and juniors, so
thats the whole nucleus of the team. We only got six to eight
seniors that are actually graduating this year, said Holloway.
Overall, the team met all of their goals and will only develop more and become better for next season and possibly
be atop the standings.
It was a good season, they met all their goals. They wanted to win at least one game this year, they won two, said

Holloway. They were very competitive and were actually in

all the games. The only game we were not competitive was
the first game of the season against Medicine Hat.
The Spartans can look at this season as a positive step in
the right direction because most of the teams are graduating
their seniors and they will have most of them returning.
Holloway is planning to return for his second season as
head coach.
As for the peewee Spartans, they had to play catch-up
against Rocky Mountain House as they were down 20-0 to
begin the game.
It was our toughest challenge yet, for the first time this
year we fell behind by more than one touchdown. At one
point we were losing 20-0, just missing tackles and early
turnovers, said Clinton Bean.
The passing game ended up being pivotal in the comeback.
We managed to catch up with our passing game. Riley
Gallant scored two receiving touchdowns. We trailed 20-14 at
the half and Rocky Mountain had done a great job scouting
our team and shutting down the run, said Bean. Good thing
we are not a one dimensional team. The defense locked up
and only allowed one more touchdown allowing us to stay
in the game.
The Spartans went on a 16-6 run in the second half to win
30-26 and have a perfect regular season at 6-0.
We have home playoff advantage throughout the playoffs. The kids worked hard all year and earned it. Today we
showed character and heart, said Bean.
Kickoff for the bantams will be at 1:30 p.m. and the peewees play at 3:30 in Strathmore.

Night event

Starting at 1:30pm Aztec Real Estate Inc. is hosting a

Christmas Matinee at the Joyland Theatre. Just bring in a non

perishable food donation for the Strathmore Food Bank and enjoy the movie
POLAR EXPRESS, space is limited so be sure to come early!
After the movie the Town of Strathmore has asked Santa to come to
Kingsmen Park to visit with the kids and hand out candy on behalf of the Town.
This is happening between 3:30 and 5pm.
This leaves everyone lots of time to pick their favorite spot along the Parade
route as the parade starts at 5:30pm and runs until 6:00. The floats will be
lit up and you guessed it, more candy will be handed out!
We always welcome and encourage all those who would like to put a float into the parade.
Just give Rob or Tracey a call at Aztec Real Estate Inc. to get your entry form and all the details
After the parade everyone can venture up to the Ag grounds for 6:30 pm where a group of
dedicated people have prepared the theme park for your enjoyment! There you will be able
to have your photo taken with Santa, enjoy a fireworks show and charity BBQ and stroll through
the park to take in all the displays.
