BANGLADESH RICE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

1. Introduction
Rice, as a staple food, accounts for about 92% of the total food grains produced in the country.
Seventy-five percent of necessary calories and 55% of proteins are met from rice daily. Rice
production employs almost 44% of our labor forces and provides national food security. So, rice
research as initiated in this part of the sub-continent in !9!". #oever, the modem era of rice
research and development started in mid-si$ties of the last century.
%he demand for rice is increasing because of increasing population. So, to meet up the increasing food
demand, an autonomous organi&ation in the name of 'ast (a)istan Rice Research *nstitute +'(RR*,
as established on ! -ctober !9." ith ./.02 hectares of land at 1oydebpur, 2a&ipur3 4/ )m north of
5ha)a. 6fter liberation in !9.!, it as renamed as the 7angladesh Rice Research *nstitute +7RR*,
through the parliamentary act !" in !9.4 +6ct 8 of !9.4,. *n order to bring dynamism in the
management system, an amendment as made by a parliamentary act in !99/ +6ct 9 of !99/,. 7RR*
is an autonomous organi&ation under the :inistry of 6griculture. 6 !4 member 7oard of :anagement
+7-:, headed by the 5irector 2eneral determine polices and its e$ecution for the smooth running of
the institute. %he institute operates ith !9 research divisions and nine regional stations, three support
service divisions and five sections. %otal manpoer of the institute is /./, of hich 24. are scientists.
:ost of them are highly trained professionals ith :S and (h5 degrees.
Achievement of BRRI is summri!ed s fo""o#s
Released /. rice varieties including /4 inbreds and 4 hybrids suitable for
different seasons of 7angladesh,
5eveloped more than 5" improved technologies on soil, ater, fertili&er and
cultural practices of rice, and 49 profitable rice-based cropping patterns for different 6';s,
5eveloped and improved 42 agricultural machineries,
*dentified 42 rice diseases +!" ma<or, and 2// species of rice insect-pests +2"
ma<or,, and developed control measures for the ma<or insects and diseases,
(reserved more than .,""" rice germplasm in the 7RR* 2ene 7an) collected
from home and abroad,
%rained more than /0,5"" scientists, e$tension personnel and progressive
farmers from 2-s and =2-s,
(ublished 259 boo)s, boo)lets, monographs, folders and e$tension materials for
technology dissemination,
6chieved the ability to produce about !"" tons of breeder seed per year, and
supply it to different seed producing agencies for further multiplication and dissemination at the
farm level.
Im$ct
%he impacts of 7RR* are as follos>
5uring the last four decades, rice production has more than tripled
synchroni&ing ith the increase of population.
*n !9.", total rice area as !".4! million ha and clean rice production at that
time as about !" million ton +:%,. *n 2""9-!", total rice area in three seasons reached to about !2
million ha, mainly due to increased cropping intensity, and clean rice production reached to about
44 :%.
6t present, 7RR* varieties cover more than 0"% of rice area and account for
about 9"% of the total annual rice production of the country.
Return rate of one ta)a investment in rice research and development is %) 4/.
7RR* developed !9 rice varieties are cultivated in !4 different countries of the
orld.
