n the 11th hour of the

11th day of the 11th
month of 1918, an
armistice, or temporary cessa-
tion of hostilities, was declared
between the Allied nations and
Germany in the First World
War, then known as the Great
War. Commemorated as
Armistice Day beginning the
following year, November 11th
became a legal federal holiday
in the United States in 1938.
In the aftermath of World War
II and the Korean War,
Armistice Day became
Veterans Day, a holiday dedi-
cated to American veterans of
all wars.
THE GREAT WAR &
ARMISTICE DAY
Though the Treaty of
Versailles was signed on June
28, 1919, November 11
remained in the public imagi-
nation as the date that marked
the end of the Great War.
In November 1918, U.S.
President Woodrow Wilson
proclaimed November 11 as
the first commemoration of
Armistice Day. The days obser-
vation included parades and
public gatherings, as well as a
brief pause in business activities
at 11 a.m. On November 11,

I
n 1991, I started a compa-
ny called North Jersey
Credit Clinic (NJCC) in
Pompton Lakes; offering cred-
it repair services, debt mitiga-
tion/modification and credit
counseling. Unfortunately,
business was very good, mean-
ing, there were a lot of people
in our area that were basically
in trouble, behind on their
bills, carrying massive credit
card debt and watching their
credit profiles being torn to
shreds by the three major
credit reporting agencies.
Interest rates at the time were
higher than today, but, some
credit cards and individual
store charge cards were
allowed by law to charge their
customers an annual rate not
to exceed 29.99% and that is
exactly what they did.
Many of your neighbors
were victimized by low bal-
ance credit card issuers and
lenders that offered credit
repair services promising to
wipe out their debts through
their combined/consolidated
lending practices. This did
nothing more than entice
these poor unsuspecting folks
into an initial lower rate, but,
if any payment was received
after the due date the interest
rate accelerated to 29.99%
retroactively to the time of
the consolidation and this
was legal!
The credit repair and
counseling industry was seedy
indeed and when NJCC start-
ed it was like a breath of fresh
air in a polluted industry.
Business was so good that it
distracted me from my retire-
ment and estate planning
business resulting in my sale
of NJCC. Let me first share
one client story that I think
you will find interesting;
Mary (not her real name of
course) purchased an entire
house full of furniture from
four stores in our area, spend-
ing $25,000 in the process.
She was enticed by the stores
to open a charge account to
defer interest and payments
for a year at each place she
shopped. She took advantage
of the offers and had a beauti-
fully decorated and furnished
home. At the conclusion of
the year, Mary called each
company to find out the bal-
ance she owed and promptly
sent the checks to pay-off the
balances in full and thought
that the matter was closed.
Unfortunately, as you will
read, this was not the case.
One day my wife Terry,
was making a deposit at our
local bank and overheard a
conversation between a bank
employee and Mary on the
other end of the phone. Mary
was quite hot and disturbed
that the bank had turned her
down for a credit card as well
as a mortgage refinance appli-
cation calling her a bad cred-
it risk! Terry could hear Mary
screaming at the employee
through the handset of the
phone, as well as the response
she received from the bank
indicating that her credit pro-
file was terrible and she just
didnt qualify for any credit at
their bank or any other bank,
the employee added. Terry,
upon Marys disconnecting
the call, informed the repre-
sentative that we owned
NJCC and could help Mary if
she would simply call her and
refer our services, leaving my
name and number which, she
did. Immediately Mary called
me telling me that my wife
had overheard her conversa-
tion at the bank and that she
needed help. Upon her
arrival to my office later that
day the mystery was solved in
about three hours.
Mary, in fact, paid each
of the furniture store balances
that she received verbally over
the phone. However, by the
time the credit card compa-
nies received the checks,
interest had accrued of under
$1 on each card. The amount
is quite significant to the story
as $1 reflected a balance owed,
yet too small for the stores
computers to generate a bill.
There were no further activi-
ties on each of the store
accounts, so there were no
bills generated for that reason
as well. Eventually, the
accounts went into non-pay-
ment mode and to the credit
and collections department
that charged-off the accounts
as uncollectible; automati-
cally notifying the credit
bureaus, severely damaging
Marys credit report. My job
was to contact each credit
grantor, explain and verify the
situation asking them to not
only purge the balance from
their records as paid in full,
but to notify the reporting
agencies to wipe out this neg-
ative information. Within a
few weeks Marys credit was
restored and the banks were
calling her to extend credit
and loans. A happy ending
story, Mary became a financial
planning client of mine as
well cheerfully referring her
family and friends who also
became clients.
Marys story is not
unique, stuff like this happens
all of the time and perhaps
unwittingly to you too.
Another technique to help
people who carry credit card
debt is something you can
benefit from as well; simply
call the lender and ask them
to lower the rate! In virtually
every scenario, the banks and
credit card companies com-
plied and in some cases the
reduction was as significant as
7% or more! Let me share
with you the latest statistic
from the Federal Reserve:
total credit card debt in the
USA as of 8/31/14 was $880.3
billion, an average of $7,828
of credit card debt for every
household in the nation. More
than likely you are counted
amongst the debtors. The first
rule in obtaining financial
independence is to eliminate
non-mortgage debt and credit
cards top the list! Credit card
debt is the cancer of the
American people and there is
a cure, pay cash! If you dont
have the cash, dont buy it!
Ask yourself, do I really need
that item or do I want it! Pay
cash for gas and youll receive
an immediate discount at the
pump too! Pay for your pur-
chases by check or debit card
and I would suggest that pay-
ing-off your credit card debt is
a better investment than a
401k contribution! Before
building your retirement for-
tune, you must eliminate
credit card debt with 14 -
19% in interest charges. This
is a better investment than
investing, first! Then you
must plow all disposable and
discretionary funds into
wealth accumulation vehi-
cles, both long and short-
term, preferably tax-deferred,
tax-free and tax-advantaged
to finance your retirement
and future quality of life.
Your motto should be, if it is
to be, its up to me! If I may
be of service in this regard,
please call me for a no obliga-
tion no cost appointment.

E
rosion of tooth enamel
is one of the many
causes of tooth pain.
Tooth erosion occurs when
excess acid wears away the
tooth enamel, which is the
hard outer layer that gives
teeth their structure. In gen-
eral, the calcium that occurs
naturally in saliva will help
neutralize the acids on the
foods and protect your enam-
el from erosion. When you
consume a lot of highly
acidic foods or drinks, the
calcium in your saliva may
not be able to keep up. Pure
fruit juice and any type of
carbonated drink (even diet
soda) and most sports/energy
drinks are highly acidic.
Large amounts of these will
permanently damage tooth
structure.
Symptoms of tooth ero-
sion include the following:
1.Tooth Pain. When enamel
wears away, your teeth are
more sensitive to hot, cold or
even chewing.
2.Discoloration. Your teeth
appear more yellow. The
layer below enamel, dentin,
is exposed and is yellowish in
color.
3.Transparency. Your teeth
may look more transparent
(clear) near the edges where
you bite.
4.Cracks and Cups. If the
enamel starts to erode, your
teeth may develop cracks and
small dents along the chew-
ing surface and gum line.
You can reduce your risk
for tooth erosion by keeping
acidic foods to a minimum.
Read the labels for acids that
are present. Chewing sugar
free gum helps by encourag-
ing your mouth to produce
more saliva to help recover
from exposure to excess acid.

be commemorated with
thanksgiving and prayer and
exercises designed to perpetu-
ate peace through good will
and mutual understanding
between nations and that the
president should issue an annu-
al proclamation calling for the
observance of Armistice Day.
By that time, 27 state legisla-
tures had made November 11 a
legal holiday. An act approved
May 13, 1938 made November
11 a legal Federal holiday, ded-
icated to the cause of world
peace and to be hereafter cele-
brated and known as Armistice
Day. In actuality, there are no
U.S. national holidays because
the states retain the right to
designate their own, and the
government can only designate
holidays for federal employees
and for the District of
Columbia. In practice, howev-
er, states almost always follow
the federal lead.
FROM ARMISTICE DAY
TO VETERANS DAY
American effort dur-
ing World War II (1941-1945)
saw the greatest mobilization
of the U.S. Army, Navy,
Marines and Air Force in the
nations history (more than 16
million people); some 5.7 mil-
lion more served in
the Korean War (1950 to
1953). In 1954, after lobbying
efforts by veterans service
organizations, the 83rd U.S.
Congress amended the 1938
act that had made Armistice
Day a holiday, striking the
word Armistice in favor of
Veterans. President Dwight
D. Eisenhower signed the leg-
islation on June 1, 1954. From
then on, November 11
became a day to honor
American veterans of all wars.
The next development in
the story of Veterans Day
unfolded in 1968, when
Congress passed the Uniform
Holidays Bill, which sought to
ensure three-day weekends for
federal employeesand encour-
age tourism and travelby cele-
brating four national holi-
days (Washingtons Birthday,
Memorial Day, Veterans Day
and Columbus Day) on
Mondays. The observation of
Veterans Day was set as the
fourth Monday in October.
The first Veterans Day under
the new law was Monday,
October 25, 1971; confusion
ensued, as many states disap-
proved of this change, and con-
tinued to observe the holiday
on its original date. In 1975,
after it became evident that the
actual date of Veterans Day car-
ried historical and patriotic sig-

aring for pets is some-
times compared to
raising children.
Though the two are not exact-
ly the same, there are similari-
ties between raising a child
and caring for a pet. Like curi-
ous kids, fearless pets may not
understand the potential haz-
ards around them, and some of
these dangers differ depending
on the season.
WINTER
Cold weather and snow
may make both pets and peo-
ple less likely to venture out-
doors. Dogs that use the yard
to relieve themselves often
cannot avoid the ice and
snow. These conditions can
put pets at risk.
As with humans, animals are
susceptible to hypothermia
and frostbite. When the
weather is cold, pets should
not remain outdoors without
shelter for extended periods of
time. The Humane Society of
the United States advises that
exposed skin on noses, ears
and paw pads can quickly
freeze and suffer permanent
damage. Dogs and cats are
safer and warmer indoors.
Salt and other chemicals
used to melt snow and ice can
irritate pet paws. When the
animal then licks irritated
paws, the chemicals can be
transferred to the tongue and
mouth. Rinse paws after dogs
come in from walks, or use
protective booties to keep feet
covered. Limit the amount of
products you use to melt snow,
opting for sand or cat litter for
traction.
Provide more water dur-
ing the winter when the effort
it takes for pets to keep their
bodies warm can quickly
deplete their energy stores.
Compensate by giving pets a
little more food and water in
the winter.
Pets may be attracted to
automotive antifreeze due to
its sweet smell and taste. But
antifreeze can be toxic.
Coolants and antifreeze made
with propylene glycol are less
toxic to pets, wildlife and even
human beings.
SPRING
Spring is a season of
rebirth and renewal when
pleasant weather has both
people and pets eager to get
outdoors again. However, cer-
tain springtime dangers may
be lurking, and it takes an
informed pet owner to keep
animals safe.
Spring cleaning is a ritual
for many families, and clean-
ing chemicals and products
can be dangerous to inquisi-
tive pets. Use these items
properly, and keep dogs and
cats away. Birds are especially
sensitive to chemical fumes, so
move birds out of harms way
when cleaning.
Products used in the yard,
such as pesticides, fertilizers,
tools, and soil additives, may
be harmful if ingested. Sharp
tools can injure dogs or cats
running around the yard. Keep
pets out of garden beds when
doing lawn and garden work.
As homeowners throw open
windows and doors to let fresh
air inside, they may not realize
broken or torn screens can let
indoor animals escape.
Examine entry and exit
points, making sure they are
not easily penetrated, before
leaving pets unattended. A
lost pet can be struck by a
vehicle or be exposed to yard
hazards.
SUMMER
Hot weather can be very
hazardous, as heat stroke and
dehydration are potential
summertime problems for pets.
Old and young pets are less
capable of regulating their
body temperatures, making
them especially susceptible to
hot spells. Keep pets indoors
during the hottest hours of the
day and provide plenty of
water.
Chemicals used to main-
tain a swimming pool are dan-
gerous to pets and people.
They should be stored out of
reach to prevent accidental
contact or ingestion.

Is Sclerotherapy a solution for
Spider Veins?
The vein treatment I received was great. I am very happy with the
procedures done on my legs. I wish I had done this earlier.

At ACP Vein Treatment Center in Wayne, we treat venous
diseasesin men andwomenwith painless, minimally invasive vascular
therapies. The most common of these include treatments for
varicose veins and spider veins. These conditions are progressive
diseases that can develop into serious medical issues, including
discoloration and ulceration. Our new ACP Vein Center in Wayne is
dedicated entirely to thediagnosis and treatment of vein disorders.

Spider veins are
cherry red, or
bluish in color, and
occur more com-
monly on the legs,
sometimes on the arms, and occa-
sionally on the face. They are thin
and thread-like, measuring 1-2 mm
in diameter, and generally appear
in a linear pattern, a branch-like
pattern, or a spider pattern. These
veins are not painful, and usually
are a cosmetic issue only.
A treatment option for these
problematic veins is Sclerother-
apy. In order to understand how
sclerotherapy works, it is impor-
tant to understand how pressure
on the veins causes vein swelling.
This pressure hinders the blood
from being able to successfully
pass through it. So, the walls of
the vein swell (thus making them
stand out from the leg).
It is estimated that approximately
half of all adult women are af-
fected by spider veins. Treatment
helps improve your skins appear-
ance, creating a more uniform,
unblemished look. Sclerotherapy
is a simple office procedure that
can eliminate unsightly spider
veins in your legs.
At the new ACP Vein Center,
Sclerotherapy is one of our most
popular treatments for removing
spider veins. It involves injecting
problem veins on the legs with a
sterile solution that irritates the lin-
ing of the blood vessel and makes
the problem vein go away. This is
a minimally invasive procedure that
rarely requires any anesthetic, and
can be performed in our office. A
session will usually take about 30
minutes, depending on the number
of veins to be treated. Sclerother-
apy is most often used on small-to
medium-sized veins.

Some dogs and cats may
be good swimmers, but that
does not mean they should be
left alone in swimming pools.
As you would a child, keep a
watchful eye on pets when
theyre in or around pools.
Warmer weather brings out
the bugs, and so keep pets up-
to-date with their immuniza-
tions. Mosquitoes can spread
diseases that can lead to
heartworm and other condi-
tions. Talk to a veterinarian
about preventative measures
to keep pets healthy.
AUTUMN
Autumn is a great time of
year to spend some time out-
doors with your pet. But you
must be aware of your sur-
roundings and practice safety.
Many animals spend the fall
storing food or making
accommodations for winter
hibernation. Snakes may be
out looking for burrows and
can be in foul moods. A curi-
ous pooch can walk away with
a bite if he or she comes up
against a grumpy snake look-
ing for a den.
The ASPCA Animal
Poison Control Center notes
mushrooms may be growing
in the fall. Unfortunately, it
can be difficult to distinguish
highly toxic mushrooms from
nontoxic ones, so the best
way to keep pets from ingest-
ing poisonous mushrooms is
to keep them away from
areas where mushrooms are
growing.
Some people may resort
to rodenticides to keep mice
and other small animals out of
homes when theyre seeking
warmer places to nest. These
products are highly toxic to
pets and can result in death.
Sometimes eating a mouse
that has consumed a rodenti-
cide is enough to harm a pet.
Pet owners that use these
products must exercise
extreme caution or find other
methods to curtail rodent
infestations.
No matter the season,
pet owners must prioritize
keeping their pets safe from
seasonal hazards.

nificance to many Americans,
President Gerald R. Ford
signed a new law returning the
observation of Veterans Day to
November 11th beginning in
1978. If November 11 falls on a

On Veterans Day an offi-

irca 1979. As a junior
in high school, I
was the consummate
underachiever. Thinking that
somehow I was going to be
playing centerfield for the
New York Yankees made it
easy for me to neglect school.
One day while in Mrs. Whites
English class I became a dis-
ruption, as usual. You know,
just trying to be cool. On this
particular occasion she asked
me to come to the front of the
class, made me sit on a chair in
the corner and then proceeded
to make a dunce cap and put it
on my head. Everyone was
laughing, but they were no
longer laughing with me. They
were now laughing at me.
I thought, is this really
who I am? Truth is, I did not
like who I was and knew I
needed to change. I was not a
dunce, but simply a young
man who couldnt find his
way. Can you relate?
We are all somebody.
Dont ever let anyone tell you
differently. So many of us are
the product of who others tell
us we are. Remember you were
crafted for a purpose. I believe
your mission, if you choose to
accept it, is to identify what
that purpose is and live it out!
Think about it
What would happen if
you found your purpose and
lived it out? Ask yourself two
questions: What do you like to
do? And, what are you really
good at? Chances are your pur-
pose lies somewhere in the
common answer to these two
questions. For me, covering
centerfield for the Yankees
was not my purpose. There
was something greater. There
is a great difference between
dreams and purpose. One is all
about you and the other is you
all about others!
