INTRODUCTION TO REVERSE OSMOSIS:

PROCESS DESCRIPTION

The phenomenon of osmosis occurs when pure water flows from a dilute saline solution
through a membrane into higher concentrated saline solution. The phenomenon of osmosis is
illustrated in Figure below. A semi permeable membrane is placed between two
compartments. Semi permeable means that the membrane is permeable to some species,
and not permeable to others. Assume that this membrane is permeable to water, but not to
salt. Then, place a salt solution in one compartment and pure water in the other
compartment. The membrane will allow water to permeate through it to either side. But salt
cannot pass through the membrane. As a fundamental rule of nature, this system will try to
reach equilibrium. That is, it will try to reach the same concentration on both sides of the
membrane. The only possible way to reach equilibrium is for water to pass from the pure
water compartment to the salt-containing compartment, to dilute the salt solution. Figure
also shows that osmosis can cause a rise in the height of the salt solution. This height will
increase until the pressure of the column of water (salt solution) is so high that the force of
this water column stops the water flow. The equilibrium point of this water column height in
terms of water pressure against the membrane is called osmotic pressure. If a force is
applied to this column of water, the direction of water flow through the membrane can be
reversed. This is the basis of the term reverse osmosis. Note that this reversed flow
produces pure water from the salt solution, since the membrane is not permeable to salt.

Reverse Osmosis In Practice

With a high pressure pump, pressurized saline feed water is continuously pumped to the
module system. Within the module, consisting of a pressure vessel (housing) and a
membrane element, the feed water will be split into a low saline product, called permeate
and a high saline brine, called concentrate or reject. A flow regulating valve, called
concentrate valve, controls the percentage of feed water that is going to the concentrate
stream and the permeate which will be obtained from the feed. In the case of a spiral wound
module consisting of a pressure vessel and several spiral wound elements, pressurized water
flows into the vessel and through the channels between the spiral windings of the element.
Up to seven elements can be connected together within a pressure vessel. The feed water
becomes more and more concentrated and will enter the next element, and at last exits from
the last element to the concentrate valve where the applied pressure will be released.
Permeate of each element will be collected in the common permeate tube installed in the
centre of each spiral wound element and flows to a permeate collecting pipe outside of the
pressure vessel.

The feed water shall be drawn by the booster pump from the client raw water tank by the
filter feed pump and chlorinated before fed to pre-treatment filtration.

Media filtration is included having Gravel and Sand. Filtration will be manually controlled for
the operation and backwashing and the filter is expected to be washed once per day.
Pressure gauges are provided to indicate when backwashing is required.
The filtered water is De-Chlorinated with sodium meta bisulphite before feeding the
membranes.

After pre-treatment the water shall comply with guidelines for feeding permeators namely,
the SDI (Silt Density Index) is less than 3. There shall be no chlorine present and the
dissolved iron should be less than 0.03 mg/l.

In addition to the above parameters, ETCH2O own specially developed ETCH2O
solution sequestrant is added to prevent scaling by calcium sulphate. Furthermore, ETCH2O
solution enables the plant to operate with an LSI (Langelier Saturation Index) in the brine
stream of up to 1.0 instead of the conventional operation at a negative LSI.

Since LSI is pH dependent, the use of ETCH2O solution reduces the acid consumption
required to prevent calcium carbonate scaling.

Chemical mixing is achieved in-line in the low-pressure section together with 5-
micron cartridge filtration.

The feed water is then boosted by high-pressure pump and is divided in the
permeators into permeate and reject streams by reverse osmosis pressure. The reverse
osmosis membranes are ion selective and allow almost pure water to permeate through to
the product stream while salts are rejected and flow out into the brine stream. In the event

that the feed water analysis changes, the plant performance changes accordingly.
Subsequent to reverse osmosis, the permeate will feed under remaining pressure to the
client product water storage tank.

Post-treatment chemical dosing equipment enables final correction of pH and sterilization of
the product water, prior to storage in the product water tank.

Cleaning and maintenance of the permeator membrane are reduced by the inclusion of
membrane flushing system.

The R.O. system will be a standard ETCH2O product pre-fabricated on a corrosion-resistant
skid. The module will include an integral panel, piping and control valves.

Performance

This system has been designed to operate on a feed Water having TDS of 40000 mg/l
(max), where individual salt levels permit operation at 35 % water recovery in the Reverse
Osmosis unit.

It should be noted that the system design is based on feed water operating
temperature range of 25C - 35C and that variations in temperature will affect
performance.

The permeate water produced by the system will have a TDS of < 200 mg/l. before
post-treatment.

The plant is designed to produce the stated capacity throughout the first year of operation;
however, there may be reduction during the next two years of about 4%.

Guarantee

All equipment supplied by ETCH2O are guaranteed against defective manufacture and bad
workmanship for:

14 Months from delivery of equipment to site.

13 Months from installation of equipment.

12 Months from commissioning.

Whichever of the above dated occurs first.

The process and interconnecting Pipework for the Brackish Water System will
generally be Saudi Arabian manufactured Class 5 PVC.

English language on an A4 format.
