This is conveyed through the disjointed and truncated sentence tructure of the text, conveying a
dislocated sense of belonging. Furthermore the matter of fact tone and distant third person perspective
used by the narrator emphasises that the family life in the poem was not loving or intimate. Thus the
text illustrates that families are not always facilitators of belonging as you might think.

positioning of the child between the two adults exemplyify the sense of security provided by ones sense
of family. Furthermore the fact that all the figures have joined hands exemplifies the strong sense of
connection felt by all three of them. Furthermore the common texture used on the body of each figure
acts as a visual metaphor, conveing their unity which is facilitated by their sense of belonging.
Text 3 effectively demonstrates the importance of the home in the development of familial and
community ties. The use of collective pronouns "we " and "our" in the lines "It was our home. We cared
for it. We had built it with our own hands ", conveying the strong sense of connection the family feel
towards the house. [40mins] The persona's sense of belonging towards the house itself is conveyed in
the lines "this was more than just bricks and mortar. It was our home for three generations", where the
euphamism "bricks and mortar" is used to highlight how he viewed the house as more than an object.
The nourishing effect of these connections is exemplified through the assertive and confident tone of as
"fundamental to my identity and critical to my person" thus demonstrating to readers the "importance
of security of home and community".
