Experiment 2
Title: Concrete compressive strength

Experiment objectives
(i) Expose students to testing concrete
(ii) Identity the critical factors that affect concrete compression strength.
(iii)Perform statistical analysis of data , use TWO FACTOR ANOVA to screen factors and
investigate interactions if any.
(iii) Report writing

Background
Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, stone (aggregate) and water. The compressive strength
depends on many factors and this experiment will provide a hands on practice on factor
screening. This experiment focuses on just two which are water cement ratio and binder type.
A number of concrete cubes have been cast using two water cement ratios of 0.4 and 0.55,
two binder types 50/50 OPC/GGBS and 100% OPC.

The concrete cubes have been cured for a period of 13days. The general testing procedure is
attached. You will be expected to do the labs in groups and due to limitations of space; each
group will have 20minutes for the lab. Please check the attached groups for the lab times
for your group. Note that the whole dataset for the whole testing will be used for your
report.

Uncertainty analysis
(c) State the instrument resolutions for devices in your experiment. [1]
(d) Using dimensions from a single experimental unit and crushing load, calculate the
uncertainty in the compressive strength [2]

Descriptive statistics
For each set of results;
(e) Perform numerical summaries of compressive strength for each treatment (the summaries
should include mean, range and standard error.[3]
(f) Plot comparative box plots for the treatments. Are there any outliers? If so what are the
possible reasons for the outliers?[4]

Experiment design
(a) Identify at least 3 control factors in this experiment that affect compressive strength. [3]
(b) Identify the different treatments applied in the experiment. [2]

Inferential statistics [6marks]
(g) Does the additive model hold for this experiment?
*** Depending on the outcome in (g) either check the main effects hypothesis in (h and i) or
make a table of means
(h) Is there any evidence that compressive strength of concrete is influenced by w/c ratio?
(i) Is there evidence that compressive strength is influenced by the binder type?
[Assume 5% significance level in your ANOVA]
