It's easy. The board has 8 files
and 8 ranks. Files are the rows
of squares that go up and down.
Each one is named by a small
letter. Ranks are rows that go
sideways. Each one is named
by a number.
Every square also has a name.
The first part is its file and the
second part is its rank. In this
diagram, a white pawn moved
to e4 and a black pawn to e5.
When moves are written down,
the first capital letter shows the
piece which moves. Q is queen.
B is bishop. R is rook. N is used
for knight because the king is K.
If there is no capital letter, that
means a pawn moves.
Next is the square that the
piece moves to. Bc4 says that a
bishop moves to the square c4.
When a piece is captured, an x
is put before the square. Qxf7
means a queen takes on f7.
If a pawn captures, the letter
of the file it starts on is given
first, then an x followed by the
square it takes on. exd5 says a
pawn on the e-file captures on
the square d5.
When two pieces of the same
kind can go to the same spot,
another letter is put after the
piece to show what file it came
from. Rae1 tells us that a rook
on the a-file moves to e1.
If the pieces that can move to
the same spot are on the same
file, then their rank number is
added. N6e4 means the knight
on the 6th rank moves to e4.

Rooks and bishops work great together. The diagonal
power of a bishop combines perfectly with a rooks action
on the ranks and files.
A rook and bishop can cooperate in different ways to
checkmate a king. Thats the topic of this class.
Diagram #1 shows how a bishop can assist with a back
rank mate even when the opponent has made an escape
square for the king. 1.Re8+! Rxe8 2.Rxe8# is mate
because the bishop covers the h7 square.
A similar kind of mate can happen on a side file. White
wins in diagram #2 by 1.Ng6+! hxg6 2.Rh3#. The bishop
at c4 controls g8 and the rook takes care of business on
the h-file. Be careful! 1.Nf7+? Rxf7 2.Bxf7 Rd1+!
There are several cool R & B mates on the back rank
when the opponent has advanced their g-pawn.
Example #3 is easy to figure out, if you have the habit
of looking for queen sacrifices. 1.Qxd8+! Nxd8 2.Re8#.
This time, the bishop stops the king from going to g7.
Position #4 is a little trickier. The black king has two
escape squares (g7 and h7) but that still isnt enough.
1.Qe8+! Rxe8 (1...Kh7 2.Qxf7#) 2.Rxe8+ Kh7 3.Rh8#. The
bishop covers g7 and protects the rook on h8.
A bishop can also command the g7
square from h6. Thats a good clue on
how to find the mate in diagram #5.
1.Qxf8+! Kxf8 2.Bh6+ Kg8 3.Re8#.
(1.Bh6? Rc8 2.Qf6 Qd4! is fine for Black.)

Double checks are an extremely powerful tactic. The
only way to get out of a double check is by moving the
king. If the king has no moves, its checkmate.
In position #6, White sacrifices their queen to decoy
the black king onto the same diagonal as their bishop.
1.Qg8+! Kxg8. Then the rook moves to uncover check
from the bishop. 2.Rd8#. Double check and mate.
In example #7, its the bishop that moves to uncover the
rook check. First a knight is given up to open the e-file.
1.Nf6+! exf6 2.Bc6#.
The two R & B mates shown above are very similar.
In the Morphy mate (diagram #8), the bishop gives the
final check against a king in the corner. It is named for
New Orleans master Paul Morphy, who won an important
game with this pattern in 1857.
In the Pillsbury mate (diagram #9), it is the rook that
gives the final check. Harry Pillsbury, from Boston, was
one of the worlds leading players in the late 1800s.
The real difference between a Morphy and Pillsbury
mate is the typical sacrifice that precedes them. These
are shown in example #10.
Black to move wins with 1...Rxc3! If White recaptures,
Black has a Morphy mate. 2.bxc3? Rb8+ 3.Ka1 Bxc3#.
However, if White goes first, we get a Pillsbury mate.
1.Rxg7+ Kh8 2.Rg8+! This
double check seals the deal.
2...Kxg8 3.Rg1#.
Thats all for this lesson.
Good luck in your games.
See you next time!

Many combos are based on pins. A piece is pinned
when it is attacked and can not move because the
king or another valuable piece is behind it.
In this diagram, White to play uses the fork 1.Nc7!
to clear the d5 square for a pin. After 1...Bxc7 2.Bd5,
the black queen is lost. (1...Qe7 2.Qd5+ Kh8 3.Nxa8)
Black to play uses the pin 1...Bc5 to decoy the
white queen into a fork. 2.Qxc5 Nd3+! 3.Kg1 Nxc5

HI BOYS AND GIRLS!
In these two puzzles,
you have to figure out
which kind of promoted
piece can get through
the maze fastest. Is it a
knight, or a bishop, or a
rook? Good luck!
solutions page 46
PAWN MAZES
Only the white pawn moves. When it reaches the last rank,
it may become a rook, bishop, or knight. But not a queen.
After the promotion, only the promoted piece moves. Find
the shortest path to capture the black king, without taking
any pieces or moving to a square that is attacked by a
black piece. It is possible to go through the maze with a
rook, bishop, or knight. Figure out which piece has the
shortest path, which the longest, and which the middlest!

White moves first in the mate problems.
In case you never saw a maze or loyd
before, here are some examples:
In a CHESSMAZE CHESSMAZE only one white
piece moves. In this maze, it is
the white bishop. The object is to
capture the black king without
taki ng any pi eces or movi ng
where the bishop can be taken.
Draw a line to show the path of
the bishop. This is a Maze in 9.
That means you should get the
king in nine moves or less.
The TRIPLE LOYD TRIPLE LOYD was invented
by Sam Loyd, a famous chess
composer. They are called triple
because there are three parts. In
part A, you place the black king
on the board so that he is in
checkmate. In part B, place him in
stalemate. For part C, put the
black king down so that White
has a mate in 1. solutions page 47

It was Saturday afternoon and the pawns were over at
Lilys house. Kiril, Moe, Larry, Frizoon, and Lily were all
standing in her backyard, wondering what to do with the
beautiful snow that surrounded them.
Then Lily came up with an idea. Lets have a snowball
fight! Kiril and Moe can be on one team, and Larry and
Frizoon will be on the other.
But how about you, Lily?, Kiril asked. Which team will
you be on?
Well, Kiril, I think two against two will be more fair.
Im going inside to make you guys some hot chocolate.
And whoever wins gets an extra marshmallow!
It seemed like a good plan. So Lily went in the house
and the other pawns started building their snow forts.
Suddenly, they heard a noise by the trees at the back of
the yard.
Can you imagine their surprise? There, right in front of
their eyes, stood two deer.
Before the pawns could say anything, the deer walked
over and introduced themselves.
Hi, everyone, my name is Bucky, and this is my sister
Jane. Were looking for something to eat. Do you know
where we can find any food?
Kiril was the first to answer. Hello, Bucky. Im Kiril the
Pawn. These are my pals: Frizoon, Moe, and Larry. My
other friend Lily is in the house. Im sure she has some
cookies you could have.
Then Moe shouted, Hey, I want a cookie too! Lets go
ask Lily.
Frizoon agreed. Excellent idea, Moe. And maybe that
hot chocolate is ready by now.
So they all went inside and sat down at the kitchen
table. When Kiril introduced the deer to Lily, she smiled
and said, Oh dear, I hope I have enough hot chocolate
for everybody.
Luckily, she did. It was hot chocolate and cookies all
around. And extra marshmallows for Bucky and Jane.
Mmmm, these are good!
by Karla Lynn McCallum & Jeff Coakley
3. . . . f5!?
Lily defends boldly with
the Jaenish Countergambit.
4. Nc3
The solid 4.d3 is a safe
way to avoid complications.
But Jane is no timid doe.
She likes to mix it up.
4. . . . fxe4
5. Nxe4 d5
The battle in the centre
is intense. Lilys pawns are
very aggressive.
White would stand better
after 5...d6 6.d4!
The best move is 5...Nf6!
6. Nxe5!
Kiril couldnt help himself.
He said, Wow! right out
loud. Jane was sacrificing
her knight on e4.
If 6.Ng3 instead, Black
should reply 6...Bg4! and
not 6...Bd6? 7.Bxc6+ bxc6
8.Nxe5! Bxe5 9.Qh5+ Kf8
10.Qxe5.
6. . . . dxe4
7. Nxc6
Now Kiril saw the deers
idea. She is going for the
rook in the corner. 7...bxc6
8.Bxc6+ Bd7 9.Bxa8 Qxa8
is an unclear position with
R+ 2p for B + N. White can
do much better by 9.Qh5+!
and 10.Qe5+.
7. . . . Qd5!?
A very clever move by Lily
Pawn, attacking the bishop
on b5. Discovered checks
by the white knight are not
a problem. 8.Nxa7+? Kd8!
9.Nxc8 Qxb5 is winning for
Black.
Lily was the perfect hostess. She made them all feel
at home. Of course, you know what happened next. She
said, Hey, does anybody want to play chess?
The deers ears perked up when they heard that. Sure,
we love chess!
There were only two chess sets in the house, so they
decided that Jane would play Lily, and Bucky would play
Moe. The other pawns were happy to be spectators,
especially Kiril. This was going to be fun to watch.

WHOS WHOS THE THE GOOF? GOOF?
1. Black has nine pawns.
2. White is in triple check.
3. White has two sets of doubled pawns, which required
two captures, but Black is only missing one piece.
4. A white rook cannot be on g8. It could not get past the
black pawns (or unmoved bishop on c8) to reach the
last rank. The rook is not a promoted piece because
White still has eight pawns.
