Date : 25 th March 2009 Time : 11:00 11:30 Class : 4 MAWAR Total of students : 35 Subject : Mathematics Year 4 Topic : Topic 1 Whole Number Learning Area : Division with the highest dividend of 100 000 Learning Objectives : Pupils will be taught to 1. Divide number less than 100 000 by a two-digit Learning Outcomes : Pupils will be able to i) Divide four-digit numbers by a) one-digit numbers
Previous Knowledge : Pupils have learnt division in Year 2 and Year 3 a) Year 2 Division within 2, 3, 4 and 5 Times-Tables b) Year 3 Division within 6, 7, 8, and 9 Times-Table & Division with the highest dividend of 1000.
Material / Resources : PowerPoint Presentation, worksheets Moral Value : Careful, Honesty, Justice Thinking skills : Students will be able to divide in standard form. Integration : a) Communication in English b) Division facts and processes.
Recall on the concept of division. Sharing and grouping equally Division is a reverse of multiplicat ion.
Pupils do the drilling exercise that involve the multiplication table from 2 to 9 Teacher emphasizes pupils that the division is a reverse of multiplication. Teacher asks students to answer instead of giving the answer. Teacher do revision on concept of division using PowerPoint
Thinking Skill : Recalling information
Value : Honesty, Justice
Resources : Word numbers
Step 1 (10 minutes)
Divide 4-digit number by 1- digit number
Teacher emphasizes pupils to use the standard form to divide. Teacher explains pupils how to divide 4-digit number by 1 digit-number. Teacher need to mention that it is the lesson today Teachers reminds pupils to master the times-table Teacher emphasizes that the digit must be divided in order :
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
After that, teacher guides pupils to explain the following steps for division of a 4 digit number by a) one-digit numbers
Teacher explains the step slowly and clearly. For poor pupils, teacher teaches them to do division with the help of times-tables. Teacher writes down all the examples that will be explained Examples : 1) 8646 2 = 4) 3795 7 = 2) 4815 9 = 5) 3217 4 = 3) 1248 6 = 6) 4114 5 = Teacher shows how to get answer for example 1 to 6.
Example 1 : 8646 2 = Example 2 : 4815 9 =
Example 3 : 1248 6 =
Example 4 : 3795 7 =
Example 5 : 3217 4 =
Example 6 : 4114 5 =
If there are pupils that do not understand to divide, teacher will start from beginning.
Step 2 (10 minutes)
Each pupil is given an activity sheet that consists of 6 questions. Activity (Lets try it out). Find the quotient. Then fill it in the crossword puzzle below.
For poor pupils, they can use the multiplications tables as a guide to answer the question. After they have finished, teacher collect pupils activity sheet. This is because teacher wants to know who does not know how to do division. Teachers provide remedial activities for them on next lesson. Next, teacher randomly chooses six pupils to come in front to show their answer on the board. Teacher discusses the answer with pupils.
Closure (5 minutes)
Teacher summarizes the lesson by emphasizing pupils to master times-tables and know the steps for division.
Follow- up activity
Pupils were asked to complete related activities in the text book.

REFLECTION When I was at the practicum, I use this method and skills to teach pupils. I use ICT in my teaching and learning process. The result is absolutely stunning. Pupils like it and their respond are positives. ICT are the most effective way to teach pupils. The use of ICT in teaching mathematics can make the teaching process more effective as well as enhance the students capabilities in understanding basic concepts. Nevertheless, implementing its use in teaching is not without problems as numerous barriers may arise. The types of barriers have been identified in the study. A proposed e-portal to overcome some of these barriers was introduced as part of the on-going research project. Pupils can easily understand the concept when I use this style of teaching. But somehow, pupils also can be out of control. Pupils will get to excited to learn and class is running out of control. This can be solving by studying more about classroom management. We cannot blame the pupils if these things happen. Children are more love to involve in playing and teaching environment. A two way communication happens here. Teacher must learn how to control the class and what is the effective way when using ICT in the classroom. Overall, using ICT in teaching and learning process is the effective way to teach the student. Pupils enjoy the lesson and more understand about the concept. Even though the class sometimes is out of control, the lesson is still running. There is teaching and learning process which is more important. Teacher must make sure that the student understand the lesson.
