INTRODUCTION to the Armoury
he Armoury is a division of American

Company, one of the
Fencers Supply Company
oldest and largest supplier of fencing equipment in the North American continent. Established in 1965, we originally offered historical
reproductions to supplement our fencing inventory, as novelties and awards. With the continual
demand for combat worthy swords from film,
theater and opera, as well as a national growing
interest in revivalist communities and renaissance festivals, we began to apply our sword
making skills to the task of making affordable
pieces that can withstand the rigors of actual
usage. Being part of American Fencers Supply
Co. gives the Armoury a unique advantage of a
real working familiarity with the art and science
of swordsmanship. After arming many of the
worlds top competitors and olympians, our
experience is unequalled as sword makers. Our
staff has included masters and certified instructors from the International Academy of Arms,
United States Fencing Coaches Association and the
Society of American Fight Directors, as well as top
level competitors in fencing and the martial arts.

Quality of Skilled Craftsmen
lmost all of our pieces are made by hand on

the premises. This process of assembly
may involve metal shaping and welding,
wood carving, hand sanding and polishing, and
many other skilled steps of the craft that is
swordmaking. It takes time. If you have a deadline for your piece, whether it be opening night or
a morning duel, please understand that we can
only accommodate so many requests at a time. It
is always prudent to prepare your orders beforehand.
Choose Your Blade
ne of the unique services that The

Armoury has to offer is that you may
choose between a wide selection of blades
for your sword. As swords became obsolete, most
blade forges closed business, ending generations
of family trades. However, some forges turned

their skills into manufacturing fencing blades.

Through American Fencers Supply Co., we are in
contact with all Europes finest surviving forges.
It is from them that we acquire some of the
strongest, most flexible, and yet affordable blades
being produced today. You can see our selection
of blades on pages 2 & 16.
The Hilts
hese rest of the sword that is not blade is

called the hilt. In the pages that follow,
each sword hilt is presented from the
outside perspective, or how it would appear
hanging from a sword belt of a conventional righthanded swordsman. This means that your sword
would hang off of your left hip and dagger off of
your right. Each hilt is presented by its code
number without specified blade. Prices depend
greatly one what blade you choose to place into
your hilt so please refer to your price list for
specific prices. The following statistics are provided. Guard or quillon length is determined by a
linear measurement of the maximum distance
across the guard or between quillon ends. Hilt
length is defined as a straight line between the
pommel to where the guard meets the blade (at
the shoulders). Overall length is applicable for the
pieces that are only sold complete. It is the
longest length from end to end. Handle length is
also provided.
Polishing
ur sword fittings are made from manga

nese bronze, steel or brass. Except for
the Kolombatovich pieces, they are all sold
unpolished. Most sword fighters prefer the
reduced cost and low maintenance requirements
of unpolished pieces. We can polish, at a nominal
charge that is dependant on the piece. If you are
interested, please call for a quote. Unpolished
Manganese Bronze is a rough cast yellow metal
that will polish up similar to brass. Unpolished
steel is a dull satin-like finish that will polish up
to a bright silver. We do not polish blades. Polishing blades can spoil the temper of the steel,
and to do this properly would be exorbitantly
expensive.

ll of these blades are real, high-carbon, tempered steel. You may select your personal favorite
blade for your sword. However, we restrict certain blade and hilt combinations because of struc
tural unfeasiblity or aesthetic reasons. If you are ordering a complete sword, specify your blade
preference by adding the letters of the catalog number (in bold
bold) to the catalog number of your hilt choice.
If you are ordering a spare blade for your sword, add /6 to the catalog number of your complete sword,
so we can fit it appropriately. And finally, if you want an unmodified tang for your own project, use the
900 series catalog numbers shown on this page.

anging from the 10th century into the

1500s, these were the main weapons
of the mounted knight. Designed
primarily as a cutting weapon to shear
through mail or other armor, these weapons
were big but by no means unwieldy. After
all, who would want to go to battle with
something unwieldy? Properly called
arming swords, the Victorians dubbed them
broadswords to distinguish them from
rapiers and small swords.

hile the single-handed arming

sword reigned from the 10th century into the sixteenth century,
the two-handed sword made its first appearance in the mid 13th century. It was
used into the 16th century, although it
became more of a processional instrument
to keep order, rather than a wartime
weapon. The hand-and-a-half arming
sword, also known as the bastard broadsword, tried to combine the best of both
worlds. Light enough to wield with one
hand when used with a shield, the grip was
long enough to use with both hands if the
shield was lost or destroyed.

he rapier was the first civilian weapon,

arising as the use of armor declined. A cut
and thrust weapon, the rapier first appeared
in the late 1400s and had its heyday up to the
1600s. The 1600s saw the start of the transitional rapier as hilt were becoming smaller and
blades were designed more for thrusting and less
for cutting. The cup hilt rapier made its appearance in the early 1650s in Spain, and enjoyed
popularity in there and in Southern Italy until the
early 1700s.

he rapier was often used with a second

defensive weapon. Daggers, bucklers (small
shields) and cloaks were the most popular
companions to the rapier. While daggers were
often decorated en suite with their companion
rapier, it was by no means unusual to have a
mismatched set of rapier and dagger. Much
lighter than the broadswords of medieval times,
the rapier brought about a whole new style of
swordplay and a proliferation of fencing schools.
The rapier marked the earliest beginnings of
fencing as a sport.

opular from the 1660s to the early 1800s, the smallsword is a thrusting weapon. The point is
used to penetrate the skin and puncture vital organs. As rapier hilts became smaller in the mid1600s, the smallsword, or townsword, came into being. Initially using shortened rapier blades,
the lighter grooved triangular blades came into use by the 1670s. Our Musqueteer blade is classic
example of this type of smallsword blade. As the triangular blades continued to be refined, the final
result was identical to our modern epee blade. The style of smallsword play evolved into the todays
modern foil game.

THEATRICAL FENCING (The 500 series)

rom the old school of modern stage fighting, this category of weapon was popular on the stage in
the 1920s and 30s due to the lack of any historical replicas. Due to their ease of maintenance
and affordability they are still popular as working stage weapons. These are the theatrical
version of the modern foil, epee and saber. These weapons have blades that are approximately 35
long and are 40 overall. They are roughly 4 to 6 across the guard and weigh about a pound.

the weapon presented in this section are from the armoury of Maestro Oscar Kolombatovich.
Maestro Kolombatovich is the former fencing master to West Point and the Metropolitan Opera.
He is a member of the Historical Fencing Society of America and the Company of Military Historians.
His spectacular weapons have been featured in numerous films, such as The Three Musketeers, Cyrano
De Bergerac, Hook, and The Crow.

unique features. Blade length is defined as the
distance from the tip to the guard. Blade width is
taken at the widest section of the blade, usually
the forte. Quillon length (when applicable) is
determined with a linear measurement of the
maximum distance between quillon ends. Overall

e make scabbards for most of our swords, rapiers, and smallswords. We do not make scab
bards for our broadsword blades because they are too long and wide to be properly fitted into
a functional scabbard. Our standard scabbard for the remaining smaller weapons is leather
over brass with a belt or frog hook. When possible, we recommend that you order the weapon and the
scabbard together to insure a good fit. When ordering a scabbard, include the weapon catalog number
followed by the denominator /10. For example, if you would like a scabbard for a swept hilt rapier
with a canelure blade, be sure to order a 352C/10.

Armoury realize in the chaos of combat, swords may receive all manners of injury. This is why
its good to have replacement parts. Furthermore, the balance of a sword is a subjective experience dependant upon you, the sword wielder. While our hilts are composed to achieve the best classical balance and practical aesthetic harmony, your personal preference may deviate from what we have
to offer. You may also be working on creating a personal project using parts from many other sources.
Our selection of Armoury Parts is offered so that you may construct your own personal alternative
piece, or replace parts without having to replace the entire weapon. Please keep in mind that some
combinations of parts will not go together because of structural unfeasiblity. Feel free to contact us

ur Standard handles are solid, hand-carved and hand-fitted, birdeye maple. This is strong
American hardwood, with a spectacular slightly-irridescent grain. Available in all sizes. Only
available in 4. Wire handles have a hollow metal core and are wrapped in steel wire. Only
available in 4 and 3 1/2. Leather wrapped handles have a wood core and are wrapped with black
leather. Available in all sizes. Exotic hardwood handles are solid, hand-carved and hand-fitted wood
that is polished. Different wood types are subject to availability. The Armoury does not used any endangered woods for any of our pieces.

B: The second two numbers refer specifically to the hilt piece.

The S that immediately follows the number denotes that the fittings are Steel. This applies to our
swords, rapiers, smallswords and daggers, but not our broadswords. W refers to Costume Weapons
(wall hangers) and A refers to aluminum.
D:
The last letter or letters indicate which blade is mounted into the hilt.
