that can given to military personnel.
It is a sign of Frances true and unforgettable
gratitude and appreciation for an individuals personal,
precious contribution to the United States decisive role
in the liberation of France during WWII.
The medal itself is described as a star with five
double vertices mounted with a crown of laurel and a red
ribbon. The front displays the emblem of the Republic. In
the back are two French flags surrounded by the words
Honor and Nation.
Created by Napoleon, it has been presented for the
last two centuries to the most deserving.
The liberation of France starts with the landing of
the Allied Forces in Northern Africa, coming from the
South and heading North to the Southern part of France.
The very first French department (county) to be freed
was the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea, in

October 1943, which was a strategic point from which

air-planes could take off towards the continent. Marseille,
Toulon, and Nice were soon to be liberated.
Coming from the North on June 6, 1944, the Allied
Forces from the United States of America, the United
Kingdom, and Canada were launching the amphibious
Operation Overlord, also called D-Day. The goal was
to land in Normandy and break the lines of the German
Army. In spite of a fierce resistance from the Germans
and intense fight-ing, the operation was successful. Yet
and sadly, many soldiers died on that day and many
casualties occurred for the freedom of France.
Hitler and Nazi Germany were to fight til the end.
The Alsace and Lorraine regions in the East, bordering
Germany, were grounds for more heavy fighting and
devastating battles.
Benefitting from a general strike by police officers,
guards, postal workers, and public transportation workers
who decided to join forces and pull together to push the
Germans back, Paris was then liberated in August 1944,
followed by the central part of France.
Again, the public is welcome to attend Tuesdays
ceremony with a luncheon served at the VFW Post 3107
following the ceremony.

Tanner on the attack

Scotty fullback Tanner Roness has been having an awesome season when he gets his
hands on the ball, breaking for some huge gainers. He had a good one in the fourth
quarter against Conrad this past Friday, putting the Scotties up 19-12 on a 36-yard
dash to the endzone that would really give the Scotties the momentum to roll Conrad
34-12. Scotty Football is asking that everyone please PAINT THE TOWN RED for the
upcoming playoff run. Anyone and everyone in Glasgow, Hinsdale, and Nashua is urged
to place their Scotty pride on their vehicles, front yards, decks, houses, and business
fronts. Lets get behind these boys over the next month. (file photo by the Buzz)
