Vocabulary Base - The Dolch List 220

Vocabulary Base is very important in building/improving our Speaking


!riting and "eading skills# The second ingredient in building our Vocabulary
Base is The Dolch !ord List - the list o$ most common %nglish &ords#
%d&ard !illiam Dolch 'hD compiled the list o$ $re(uently used &ords in the
%nglish language The Dolch !ord List also called Sight !ords or The Dolch
220# These &ords make up )0 to*0 percent o$ any general te+t and includes
pronouns ad,ectives adverbs prepositions con,unctions and verbs# The
basic list e+cludes nouns &hich make up a separate -) &ord list#
.any o$ the 220 Dolch &ords cannot be /sounded out/ and have to be
learned by /sight/ that is memori0ed# The list is divided into grade levels#
Because 1uency in reading the Dolch 220 and the -) nouns is essential to
literacy a variety o$ techni(ues are used to teach them including2 reading

activities# "epetition and practice are very important in making recognition o$
