Great ideas from the Publishers of MUSIC K-8 Magazine and Other Quality Educational Music Resources
More Happy Occasions!
And yet another wedding! My beautiful niece, Nalina
Riggio, has finally found Mr. Right, a.k.a. Jacob Kopp. In
the photo to the right here, he and his own young niece
pose for a photo with the bride and her sister, my niece
Sofia, in a lovely outdoor setting in New York this past
August. (Side note: If youre a long-time subscriber, perhaps
you remember the newborn baby picture of Sofia that
appeared in the pages of MUSIC K-8 back in 1998. Hard to
believe, isnt it?)
Anyway, the story goes that Nalina and Jake met
somewhat serendipitously, and right away just knew that
they were meant to be. He was an Army Ranger who
served a couple of tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now
hes in med school. And while that is quite impressive to be
sure, all I care about is that he makes Nalina happy. Looks
like hes doing that! Since were in Wisconsin, and theyre
in New York, I havent actually met him yet, but Im really
looking forward to it. Welcome to the family, Jake. : )
Andi Krecji and Steve Kerwin are Plankers who both
happen to work in our customer service department.
(Steve is now the manager of the department, by the way.)
They had actually met and started dating about seven
years ago while working at the same music store, but
shortly after Steve began working at Plank Road, Andi
soon followed.
In 2006, they decided to take their first road trip to
somewhere theyve never been New Orleans! They
immediately fell in love with the culture, the food, the
music, and the people. They went back five more times
before Steve finally proposed to Andi last November at
New Orleans historic Preservation Hall in front of a few
friends and a surprised crowd of spectators. They knew
New Orleans would be where they would get married, and
on October 6, 2012, they said I do! They celebrated with
family and friends by marching in a Second Line parade
through the streets of the French Quarter!
I just love being able to share happy news with you! If you read my letter and saw the photos on the inside cover of the
magazine that goes with this particular Home Journal (Volume 23, Number 3), you know that my parents just celebrated their
60th wedding anniversary. (And Paul and I just celebrated our 38th!) Not to be outdone by us old timers, some of the younger folks
among us have also made their own romantic headlines recently. Kind of appropriate for our Valentine issue, eh?
WHITE BELT DOJO
Music For Beginning Recorder Players
Creatively arranged and composed by Paul Jennings & John Riggio
If you are working with an incentive system tied to your recorder method, you
know that sometimes it can be a while between rewards, so there is a chance for
waning interest. Enter WHITE BELT DOJO. This new collection of graded, easy
songs is great for your incentive system, like the belt system in our extremely
popular method, Recorder Karate (see below).
The nine songs are all relatively short, with brief intros and endings that make
them ideal for testing multiple students or providing good material for early
performances. Each song is presented progressively with a nice mix of styles and
rhythmic interest. The collection is a combination of well-known tunes, newly
arranged, and new compositions by John Riggio and Paul Jennings, specialists at
creating music for young students. The songs in this collection are presented in 34
different tracks, with several of them presented in multiple tempos or lengths.
Your students will enjoy these songs and ask for them time and time again.
Included are:
Thunder Hawk - (BA) Driving rock with an awesome screaming band in
the back-up tracks.
ACcelerate - (AC) An energetic groove with unique keyboard
counterpoint.
Bumblebee Bop - (B) A swingin send up of Rimsky-Korsakovs famous
Flight Of The Bumblebee. Lots of fun and just B for your players.
Chillaxin - (BAG) Rhythmic but laid back accompaniment with lots of step-wise movement for recorder.
Flutter By, Butterfly - (BAG) Lush and poignant, set in a gentle 3/4.
Luna Kahuna - (BAG) Au Claire De La Lune cleverly set to surfer rock... fun!
Lightspeed Caterpillar - (BAG) Roller-coaster rock, complete with sound effects and a melody full of ups and downs.
Renaissance Circle Dance - (GABC) A familiar period dance, set with authentic period accompaniment tracks.
Juba Jump - (GABC) Light and Latin, and enormously fun to play!
You can use this collection many ways. You can, for instance, use these songs to replace any or all of the songs used in your
reward method, allowing your students to progress more slowly, but be regularly rewarded for their work. Or, you can let these
precede and/or fit between songs in a method, giving special rewards like the two-color belts offered by Plank Road Publishing
(please see page 4). Be sure to listen to the excerpts of these great tunes on our web site.

RECORDER KARATE by Barb Philipak
Experience one of the most popular recorder methods available!

further. Or if you already have a favorite method and would like to add special magic and
amazing motivation for your students, this unique kit is the answer. It has everything you

At the heart of this method is a positive reward system in which students receive colored

students. The Teachers Handbook walks you through the entire teaching process in a

DEXTER THE DRAGONS
AMAZING RECORDER ADVENTURE
A Learning Quest For Beginning Recorder Players
Stories by Katie Ebel, Music by Paul Jennings,
Illustrations by Jennifer Cooney Vulpus
Those beginning days with recorders can be
trying. Progress is often slow, and early concepts
need to be reinforced. Thats where Dexter and his
friends come to the rescue. First introduced in
RECORDER CLASSROOM magazine, our lovable dragon
and his friends face the same challenges your
beginners do.
The kit features four illustrated stories, each tied to steps in learning the basics of
recorder playing, from instrument care to tone production, practice habits, and the
actual technical challenges of learning beginning songs. Each story can be used as a
read-along, and all pages are legally reproducible. (If you have the Downloadable or
CONVENIENCE COMBO KIT, you can print from the PDFs and/or use them with a
projector, SMART Board

, or an interactive whiteboard.) At the end of each story

there are review and discussion questions to reinforce what has been learned.
The kit contains four progressive songs, each covering a little more technical
territory. The first song, Dexter Takes Off, can be played with just the note B, and
once the students have learned the note A, the song can be played with both notes. It also works with some students playing
each version, a handy thing as some students progress more quickly than others. Each song works to further what the students
have learned. In addition to Dexter Takes Off, the kit also includes Dexter And The Cave Monster, The Wizards
Enchanted Rhythms, and two versions of Dexters Dance.
To make this kit even more exciting for the students, we have created a special web site where students can enter a
password (included in the kit) and play along with the accompaniments online. We also have other activities on the site to
make this a unique learning experience for your students. The site is DexterDragon.com
Be sure to listen to extended sound samples of the product at our web site. MusicK8.com

DOJO DUETS Progressive Duets For Young Players
by Paul and Teresa Jennings
Duets are not only enjoyable to play, but they are great teaching tools for your
recorder students. For quite a while now we have had requests from teachers for duets
that will dovetail nicely with recorder methods, including our very popular Recorder
Karate method. With this in mind, Paul and Teresa created this collection of new,
progressively more difficult duets that can be used in many ways. Here are the basics:
Eight duets, the first a bit easier than the easiest Recorder Karate tune, and the
most difficult no more difficult than the hardest Recorder Karate tune.
Each duet can be played unaccompanied, with a playable piano
accompaniment available online, or with the high quality accompaniment on the
Performance/Accompaniment recordings included in the kit.
Each duet is fairly short, ideal for testing in case you want to distribute the duets
among the various levels of Recorder Karate or any other method you are using.
Parts 1 and 2 in each duet are of similar difficulty, so that on the repeat, you can
choose to have the students switch parts if you like.
Be sure to visit our web site that allows your students to practice with each tune
just like they can on our RECORDER KARATE DOJO area. This site is
RecorderDojo.com Check it out for future special recorder products, too.
Here are the tunes in this collection with the notes used in each song:
Walk This Way - AB Qu Pasa? - EGAB A Little Waltz - 1-GABCD', 2-DEF#GAB
By The Koi Pond - GAB Domo Arigato (round) - DEGAB Sleep Old Pup - 1-GABCD', 2-DEF#GABCD'
White Tiger - 1-GABC, 2-GAB Go From My Window - 1-DGABC, 2-DEGABC

Artie Almeidas FUN FOUNDATIONS FOR RECORDER - Volume 1
Hands-on and Step-by-step, How Artie integrates recorders into her amazing Bear Lake music program.
Music arranged by Paul Jennings
Teachers who have spent time in Artie Almeidas many workshops know what a creative, natural
teacher she is, and that she is wonderful at transferring her teaching ideas into words in the resources she
has published. Thats why we were so pleased to feature her in each issue of RECORDER CLASSROOM
magazine with a series of richly developed columns about how she integrates recorders into the fabric of her
fabulous program at Bear Lake. In this kit, we combine these great resources for teachers everywhere. As a
matter of fact, there is so much content here that we are breaking it into two jam-packed volumes.
The Teachers Handbook is the heart of the kit, and its many sections take you step-by-step through
Arties program as it has evolved in the more than 20 years she has been developing it. Beyond basic
technique there are sections on air production and management, instrument selection and care, repertoire,
and so much more. And this is not a dry, academic work. It is a successful teacher talking to friends about
how she does it.
More than text... In addition to the narrative, this kit features other specific resources, including games
and other activities for teaching and retention, as well as online masters to let you print and produce cards,
forms, and other resources needed for the activities. And there is music! Artie has created teaching songs,
warm-ups, and exercises, each arranged by Paul Jennings and recorded by the great musicians who you hear
on all Plank Road Publishing products. You will find these resources on the recordings that are included
with the kit. Some extras are available on the special web site we have developed for this project,

textured black, blue velvet, and textured burgundy. You can actually see color photos of these binders
on our web site: MusicK8.com Also note that the white binder features a clear outer cover for
inserting a printed sheet. Here are the details for ordering your binders and extra binder pages:
