Great ideas from the Publishers of MUSIC K-8 Magazine and Other Quality Educational Music Resources
More Happy Occasions!
And yet another wedding! My beautiful niece, Nalina
Riggio, has finally found Mr. Right, a.k.a. Jacob Kopp. In
the photo to the right here, he and his own young niece
pose for a photo with the bride and her sister, my niece
Sofia, in a lovely outdoor setting in New York this past
August. (Side note: If youre a long-time subscriber, perhaps
you remember the newborn baby picture of Sofia that
appeared in the pages of MUSIC K-8 back in 1998. Hard to
believe, isnt it?)
Anyway, the story goes that Nalina and Jake met
somewhat serendipitously, and right away just knew that
they were meant to be. He was an Army Ranger who
served a couple of tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now
hes in med school. And while that is quite impressive to be
sure, all I care about is that he makes Nalina happy. Looks
like hes doing that! Since were in Wisconsin, and theyre
in New York, I havent actually met him yet, but Im really
looking forward to it. Welcome to the family, Jake. : )
Andi Krecji and Steve Kerwin are Plankers who both
happen to work in our customer service department.
(Steve is now the manager of the department, by the way.)
They had actually met and started dating about seven
years ago while working at the same music store, but
shortly after Steve began working at Plank Road, Andi
soon followed.
In 2006, they decided to take their first road trip to
somewhere theyve never been New Orleans! They
immediately fell in love with the culture, the food, the
music, and the people. They went back five more times
before Steve finally proposed to Andi last November at
New Orleans historic Preservation Hall in front of a few
friends and a surprised crowd of spectators. They knew
New Orleans would be where they would get married, and
on October 6, 2012, they said I do! They celebrated with
family and friends by marching in a Second Line parade
through the streets of the French Quarter!
I just love being able to share happy news with you! If you read my letter and saw the photos on the inside cover of the
magazine that goes with this particular Home Journal (Volume 23, Number 3), you know that my parents just celebrated their
60th wedding anniversary. (And Paul and I just celebrated our 38th!) Not to be outdone by us old timers, some of the younger folks
among us have also made their own romantic headlines recently. Kind of appropriate for our Valentine issue, eh?
WHITE BELT DOJO
Music For Beginning Recorder Players
Creatively arranged and composed by Paul Jennings & John Riggio
If you are working with an incentive system tied to your recorder method, you
know that sometimes it can be a while between rewards, so there is a chance for
waning interest. Enter WHITE BELT DOJO. This new collection of graded, easy
songs is great for your incentive system, like the belt system in our extremely
popular method, Recorder Karate (see below).
The nine songs are all relatively short, with brief intros and endings that make
them ideal for testing multiple students or providing good material for early
performances. Each song is presented progressively with a nice mix of styles and
rhythmic interest. The collection is a combination of well-known tunes, newly
arranged, and new compositions by John Riggio and Paul Jennings, specialists at
creating music for young students. The songs in this collection are presented in 34
different tracks, with several of them presented in multiple tempos or lengths.
Your students will enjoy these songs and ask for them time and time again.
Included are:
Thunder Hawk - (BA) Driving rock with an awesome screaming band in
the back-up tracks.
ACcelerate - (AC) An energetic groove with unique keyboard
counterpoint.
Bumblebee Bop - (B) A swingin send up of Rimsky-Korsakovs famous
Flight Of The Bumblebee. Lots of fun and just B for your players.
Chillaxin - (BAG) Rhythmic but laid back accompaniment with lots of step-wise movement for recorder.
Flutter By, Butterfly - (BAG) Lush and poignant, set in a gentle 3/4.
Luna Kahuna - (BAG) Au Claire De La Lune cleverly set to surfer rock... fun!
Lightspeed Caterpillar - (BAG) Roller-coaster rock, complete with sound effects and a melody full of ups and downs.
Renaissance Circle Dance - (GABC) A familiar period dance, set with authentic period accompaniment tracks.
Juba Jump - (GABC) Light and Latin, and enormously fun to play!
You can use this collection many ways. You can, for instance, use these songs to replace any or all of the songs used in your
reward method, allowing your students to progress more slowly, but be regularly rewarded for their work. Or, you can let these
precede and/or fit between songs in a method, giving special rewards like the two-color belts offered by Plank Road Publishing
(please see page 4). Be sure to listen to the excerpts of these great tunes on our web site.

Cool, motivational music for your beginning recorder players.
RECORDER KARATE by Barb Philipak
Experience one of the most popular recorder methods available!
If youre looking for a classroom-tested, carefully planned recorder method, look no
further. Or if you already have a favorite method and would like to add special magic and
amazing motivation for your students, this unique kit is the answer. It has everything you
will need to get started with young recorder players.
At the heart of this method is a positive reward system in which students receive colored
karate belts (see page 4) to hang from their recorders for each progressively more difficult
tune. Stories from hundreds of teachers rave about the success it has created with all types of
students. The Teachers Handbook walks you through the entire teaching process in a
logical, easy-to-understand narrative, and it provides an array of teaching tools designed to
make beginning recorder study a joy for teachers and students alike. And since this Kit
comes with the rights to reproduce, your students dont have to buy books of their own.
However, Student Books are available to save you the time and effort of photocopying.
