Introduction

The HMIP publication Technical Guidance Note (DISPERSION) [D1] has been employed to determine
the preliminary requisite stack heights for the discharges to atmosphere from the site boiler.
The following calculation is based upon the information found in the "Stack Emmissions Report" of
November 2007, prepared by Scientifics Limited. Note that the stack diameter stated in the report was
0.8m diameter. The diameter used in the calculation is the required diameter to achieve the minimum
required gas discharge velocity.
Input Information
Diameter of Vent at Discharge: m
Area of Stack at Discharge: m2
From Stack Emissions Report:
Discharge Gas Temperature (Td): K
Discharge Volumetric Flow of Gas (V): m3/s at Stack Gas Temp.
Gas Discharge Velocity (w): m/s at Stack Gas Temp.

Calculation of Pollution Index (Pi)
From the D1 Guidelines:
Pi = x 1000
Pi (NO2) m3/s
Pi (Particulates) m3/s
Pi (SO2) m3/s
Pi (CO) m3/s
Total Pi m3/s
Calculation of Heat Released (Q)
From the D1 Guidelines:
Q = MW
Q = MW
Minimum Stack Discharge Velocity
From D1 Guidelines, for Minimum Velocity:
If Q < 0.1 MW w Min = 10 m/s
If Q > 1.0 MW w Min = 15 m/s
therefore, for Q calculated above:
w Min = m/s

Calculation of Ub (Uncorrected Discharge Stack Height for buoyancy)
From the D1 Guidelines:
Ub = 10
a
x Pi
b
m
where: If Q <= 1.0 MW a = -1.11 - (0.19 x log
10
Q)
b = 0.49 + (0.005 x log
10
Q)
If Q > 1.0 MW a = -0.84 - (0.1 x exp(Q
0.31
))
b = 0.46 + (0.011 x exp(Q
0.32
))
therefore:
a =
b =
Calculated Ub = m
Again, from D1 Guidelines, for Minimum Ub:
If Q <= 1.0 MW Ub Min = 1.95 x Q
0.19
If Q > 1.0 MW Ub Min = 1.7 + 0.25 x Q
0.9
Minimum Ub = m
Calculation of Um (Uncorrected Discharge Stack Height for momentum)
The discharge momentum, M, is determined using the equation below:
M = x V x w m4/s2
M = m4/s2
From the D1 Guidelines:

Um = x + (y.log

Calculation of Final Discharge Stack Height, C
From the D1 Guidelines, for multiple buildings and tall buildings:
1. List all the relevant buildings, that is those within 5Um, and record H and B for each building.
2. Evaluate K for each building (the lesser of H or B).
3. Calculate T for each building (T = H + 1.5K).
4. Find Hm (the largest value of H).
5. Find Tm (the largest value of T).
6. If U is greater than Tm, then C = U and no correction to the stack height is required.
7. Otherwise, calculate the corrected discharge height, C, using:
C = Hm + (1 - Hm/Tm)[U + (Tm - U)(1 - A
-U/Hm
)]
U = Lesser of Um and Ub = m
A = Um/Ub (If there is no value of Ub, or if Ub>Um, then A=1)
=

The uncorrected discharge stack heights due to buoyancy and momentum are now used to determine
a final discharge stack height correcting for the building in which it is to be installed.
