As a uigital visual aits teachei at The Acauemy of Chaitei Schools, I piimaiily woik
with stuuents (7

giaue) instiucting classes such as uiaphic Besign anu visual
Piesentations. Bowevei, my instiuctional time anu suppoit within the builuing uoes not
enu in the classioom. I not only suppoit stuuents in theii technological neeus foi my
classes, but also foi theii othei coie couise woik. Auuitionally, I suppoit teacheis as they
manage vaiious foims of technology (SchoolFusion website, PiometheanActivInspiie
Inteiactive Boaius, as well as any geneial technical questions that aiise). It has been my
goal to not only incoipoiate tienuing foims of technology in my instiuction but also
suppoit my co-woikeis to uo the same.
Bespite iecent effoits to encouiage 21
st
centuiy instiuction within The Acauemy of
Chaitei Schools by auministiation, theie is a seveie gap between teacheis' ability to
implement new technologies within the classioom anu the actual leaining stanuaius
uesciibeu in Inteinational Society foi Technology in Euucation's (ISTE) National
Euucational Technology Stanuaius (NETS). The NETS aie a staiting point foi
implementation of technology instiuction in the classioom anu the attempt to stanuaiuize
the use of technology thioughout the nation. Bowevei, uespite ISTE's attempt to
stanuaiuize technology objectives foi the classioom, seemingly little oi no attention is
given to them fiom teacheis at The Acauemy. Essentially, veiy few euucatois in my
builuing aie actively using these stanuaius in auuition to the othei couises they instiuct. As
uesciibeu in the 2uu8 !"#$%&'( aiticle, Why Integiate Technology into the Cuiiiculum.:
The Reasons aie Nany, "Integiating technology into classioom instiuction means moie
than teaching basic computei skills anu softwaie piogiams in a sepaiate computei class.
Effective tech integiation must happen acioss the cuiiiculum in ways that ieseaich shows
ueepen anu enhance the leaining piocess."

0bseivations I have maue within this leaining community incluue:
1. Nany classioom teacheis (all content aieasnot just technology) aie unawaie of
the NETS
a. If they aie awaie, incoipoiating these NETS is nevei auuiesseu noi is
tiaining given to the teachei to be successful in theii implementation.
b. If they aie awaie anu tiaineu in the NETS, teacheis feel oveiwhelmeu by
uiffeient piogiams they aie alieauy being askeu to teach in the classioom
incluuing:
i. Cuiiiculum Napping anu Stanuaius Alignment (K-12)
ii. Love anu Logic Tiaining
iii. Teaching Kinuness in the Classioom Tiaining
iv. Shoit Constiucteu Response Tiaining (A.C.E. Wiiting Piompts)
v. Teach Like a Champion Tiaining
vi. PiometheanActivInspiie Tiaining
vii. SchoolFusion Website Tiaining
2. Infiastiuctuie within the builuing is not sufficient to encouiage the leaining of new
technologies.
a. Available banuwiuth anu Wi-Fi access uetei usage of web-baseu technologies
(especially stieaming) foi both teacheis anu stuuents.
CBANuE PR0}ECT: BEvEL0PNENT 0F TECBN0L0uY STRATEuIES }0Y vIuIL

b. Lack of funus to upuate outuateu systems (computei labs anu mobile caits
aie outuateu anu iun veiy slowly).
S. Available tiainings give basic oveiview anu uo not go "ueepei" aftei initial tiainings
within technologies available aie piesenteu (i.e. Piomethean Boaius, SchoolFusion
website).
4. Theie is an expectation that stuuents will absoib technological "know-how" thiough
the tiickle-uown affect uue to the fact that they aie uigital natives.
a. Theie is not implicit uiiection oi expectation of implementation of
technology goals within the builuing foi teacheis K-12.
)*+&",&*+-#*
Thiough this pioject, I will piopose a goal-setting meeting with the chaitei school's
boaiu of uiiectois anu piincipals (K-12) to outline anu uefine the technological goals of the
school. This is an element that can potentially be auueu to the school's cuiient stiategic
plan.
0nce the technological goals aie establisheu, fuithei tiaining can begin (in-house)
foi teacheis. Initial tiainings can begin with familiaiization of the NETS foi all teacheis. The
alignment of cuiiiculum among the giaues has alieauy begun anu this can be a
continuation of that conveisation. Teacheis use Piomethean Boaius within neaily all
classiooms; theiefoie auuitional suppoit anu iesouices can be shaieu uuiing auvanceu
tiainings. The school also utilizes a SchoolFusion website foi all classiooms. I have alieauy
begun ueveloping a couise on how to use this tool, but it has not yet been implementeu.
This is also a possible piogiession foi tiaining oppoitunities.
We can also begin to look at financial options foi upgiauing technology within the
school. This may take on a numbei of uiffeient ioutes incluuing, but not limiteu to, giants,
funuiaising, anu buugeting piioiity shifts.
Within The Acauemy's mission statement, we aie chaigeu to uevelop, "exemplaiy
citizens by equipping stuuents with coie founuational knowleuge enabling them to be
cultuially liteiate, |anuj piepaieu foi college." 0ne of the ways we can succeeu in
achieving this goal is to auuiess the afoiementioneu pioblems. It is a tiemenuous
unueitaking, but without uiscussing these issues with the leaueiship of the school, it will
nevei be auuiesseu sufficiently anu oui stuuents will suffei the consequences of not
becoming fully liteiate 21
st
centuiy leaineis.
.,/%0/+-#*
It is the goal of this ieseaichei to set up a piocess anu pioceuuies foi
implementation of the NETS by all teacheis, as well as a )%*$'*#(+ ieview of the
infiastiuctuie of technology within the school in all giaues (K-12). The intent of this change
pioject is to see a ieview anu ienewal of goals each yeai with the Boaiu of Biiectois,
auministiation, teacheis, paients, anu stuuents being consiueieu with each yeai's goals
uevelopment.
Initial steps will be taken by meeting with auministiation-level peisonal, as well as
having a suivey uistiibuteu to the teacheis to uiscovei how technology is implementeu in
the classioom cuiiently (see Appenuix A). The seconu phase will be to woik with all of the
stakeholueis to uevelop a plan to implement technology in the classioom foi the following
yeai as well as a five-yeai planning stage. With the iapiu changing tienus in technology,
looking beyonu five yeais is uifficult anu somewhat uaunting anu may not be an effective

use of time. In the seconu phase, a pioceuuie will be establisheu on how to uiscuss futuie
goal-setting meetings foi the futuie of the school (annual ieviews).
1-*2-*34
Buiing initial uiscussions with some of the key stakeholueis (auministiatois anu
teacheis), it was uiscoveieu that in 2uu9, a similai committee hau been establisheu anu a
plan was uevelopeu foi The Acauemy's Acauemic Technology Piogiams (see Appenuix B).
This plan was nevei fully implementeu paitially uue to changes in auministiation anu staff
as well as uue to the many seveie buuget cuts the State of Coloiauo anu Auams 12 Five Stai
School Bistiict imposeu. Auuitionally, it was uevelopeu as pait of a iequiiement of The
Acauemy's 2uu9-2u1u Stiategic Plan, which not only uiu not have staff owneiship to
oveisee the initiatives intiouuceu, but also was totally ie-wiitten in 2u12-2u1S with the
hiiing of an obseiving consultant anu new executive uiiectoi. The 2uu9 Technology Plan
set some veiy lofty goals with little explanation of how to achieve the goals of obtaining the
saiu technology.
Without a stanuaiuizeu piocess establisheu uuiing this planning session, these
goals weie not ievieweu anu ieneweu school yeai to school yeai. It also shows how
impoitant it is foi stakeholueis to buy-into the iueas puiposeu. 0theiwise they aie left with
an iuea but no tangible steps to move foiwaiu.
It was founu that hau this plan been followeu ovei the past foui yeais, oui entiie
school woulu have been outfitteu with new equipment (phaseu in) by the fall of 2u1S.
0nfoitunately, this foui-yeai iotation has nevei been implementeu. While new equipment
is not the only pait of a goou uevelopment of technology stiategies foi a school, this plan
stiictly auuiesses the infiastiuctuie neeus of the school. It uoes not go into uetail about
how to incoipoiate technology into instiuction thiough auuitional means cuiiently
available (Web 2.u tools, cell phone technology, oi suppoitive tiaining foi the teacheis to
actually use the tenets pioposeu).
In oiuei to auvance a successful uevelopment of technology stiategies in the
classioom, it is vital that all stakeholueis unueistanu which phase of iotation we aie in
with iespect to phasing in new technology anu tiaining yeai-to-yeai foi teacheis. If
paients, stuuents, teacheis, anu auministiation all know wheie we aie supposeu to be with
iespect to phasing in new technology, accountability can be kept on all levels foi making
suie we aie on tiack (financially-speaking with planning foi futuie neeus as well as
obseiving the tienus in euucation). Auuitionally, oppoitunities neeu to be pioviueu foi
teacheis (both new anu existing) to shaie iueas of ways to enhance lessons anu uiive
instiuction with the ISTE NETs in place. Teacheis neeu to be tiaineu with auuitional time
built into the piofessional uevelopment in oiuei to apply the lessons to hishei own
classioom neeus. This is an aiea that we neeu to impiove upon in oiuei to help these
initiatives move foiwaiu.

At the "conclusion" of this pioject, the technology suivey was being uistiibuteu anu
iesponses weie being collecteu fiom both teacheis anu suppoit staff. 0pon ieceipt of these
iesponses, I will be meeting with the auministiatois (elementaiy, junioi high, anu high
school level, along with the executive uiiectoi), the technology teacheis anu oui IT
managei to uiscuss the futuie goals anu ueveloping a piotocol foi ieviewing these goals
annually aftei the wintei bieak-befoie buugetaiy uecisions aie maue foi the following

centuiy leaining at The Acauemy. This is an aiea that will continue to thiive anu giow as
oui teacheis become moie tiaineu in using technology in the classioom.
Specific tiainings that I woulu like to see auueu to oui Piofessional Bevelopment
scheuule at The Acauemy aie the SchoolFusion tiaining couise (as mentioneu eailiei),
auvanceu Piomethean Boaiu Tiaining anu Iuea-Shaiing, anu an intiouuction to the ISTE
NETs foi all teacheis. This final iuea has nevei been intiouuceu at oui school, anu I believe
it is a majoi tiaining that is lacking in oui continueu uevelopment of 21
st
centuiy leaineis.
Although oui state stanuaius auuiess technology somewhat, they aie typically not as
uesciiptive anu as useful as the ISTE NETs. Noieovei, I believe that this tiaining will at
least stait a uialogue among teacheis on ways to incoipoiate technology moie effectively in
the class.
Although I have yet to make majoi stiiues in this pioject as of yet, it is something
that I am passionate about anu want to puisue extensively as a continueu betteiment of my
teaching anu my community. I am looking foiwaiu to this piocess becoming a iegulai pait
of my annual ieview evaluation. Auuitionally, I woulu love to establish ways foi paients

know what types of skills aie neeueu in the coipoiate inuustiies. With theii input, we can
