UP-PGH has a total bed capacity of 1, 432.
5LCB2 is a 36-bed capacity Medical-Surgical that provides competent and quality
nursing care to patients ranging from the acute to the critically-ill.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As NURSE III
A. Supervision of Patient Care
1. Directs the planning of the total nursing care for all patients confines in the unit,
2. Supervises, directs and evaluates the total implementation of nursing care plans,
3. Coordinates all services concerned with the total care of patients,
4. Supervises personnel-patient and family relationships,
5. Reviews and analyses trends pertinent to delivery of nursing care process within the
unit and initiates appropriate innovations,
6. Does direct nursing care.

B. Personal Management
1. Directs and supervises planning and implementation of work plans in the unit,
2. Directs and supervises the evaluation of personnel performance including guidance
and counselling,
3. Plans programs, implements and evaluates in-service activities for staff
development,
4. Coordinates with the Department of Nursing specifically the Division of nursing
Education and Training in the learning activities of the staff,
5. Directs activities that promote motivation and good interpersonal relation among staff
in the unit.

C. Unit Management
1. Approves requisition for supplies and equipments,
2. Prepares job orders and follow it up,
3. Supervises the maintenance of ward cleanliness,
4. Assist in the annual budget preparation.

D. Teaching
1. Coordinates with the Critical Instructors for clinical training of nursing students,
2. Provides facilities needed for the effective and maximum learning of students,
3. Confers and participates with the faculty in the evaluation of the clinical performance
of students.

E. Research
Coordinates with the Division of Nursing Research and Development with regards to
researchers done in the unit.

F. Miscellaneous
1. Participates in seminars, in-service trainings and symposium.
2. Assumes the responsibilities of the Nurse VI in the latters absence.

As NURSE II
A. Patient Care
1. Performs total, direct and effective nursing care,
2. Assess individual needs for nursing, self-help and rehabilitation,
3. Plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care rendered involving the patient and his
family,
4. Collaborates with members of the health team in developing total care plan for the
patient,
5. Executes legal orders of the physician concerning medication and treatment,
6. Participates in patient admission, discharge planning and family teaching,
7. Records and reports facts about the patient including case evaluation,
8. Supervises patient and his family in carrying out activities that promote recovery.

B. Miscellaneous
1. Supervises duties of the nursing attendants and utility workers,

and direct supervision,

WORK RELATED EXPERIENCES
Intravenous Therapy Nurse
Performs venipuncture and stars venoclysis for patients requiring intravenous therapy,
Administers various medications via the IV route, starts blood transfusions, parental
nutrition as directed by the physician,
Assist physicians in the administration of the chemotherapeutic drugs,
Assesses and monitors hydration status of patients and makes necessary reports and
recommendations.

Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator

Provides information and teaches the patient and his family about the diabetes disease
process, complications, management and care with emphasis on controlling blood
glucose levels, lifestyle modification, proper diet and foot care,
Performs blood glucose monitoring, administers anti-diabetes medication and insulin
therapy as directed by the physician,
Performs foot assessment and assesses for vascular insufficiencies using a Doppler
machine,
Answers DM education referrals coursed through the diabetes clinic for both in and out
patients,
Acts as preceptor in training nurses undergoing the diabetes nurse educator certification
program.

Internal Medicine: Patient confined with Cardio-pulmonary, renal, endocrine, infectious disease
including cancer patients and those with multi-organ failure and those on haemodialysis.
Ophthalmology: Patients who underwent lens extraction, cryo-surgery, trabeculectomy, pars-
plana vitrectomy.
Otorhinolaryngology: Patients who underwent thyroidectomy, palatoplasty, mandibulectomy,
radical mastoidectomy, parotidectomy, foreign body extraction, esophagoscopy, tracheostomy,
laryngoscopy, wide excision.
Neurosurgery: Patients who underwent craniotomy, craniectomy, evacuation of
subdural/epidural hematoma, VP shunting, tube ventriculostomy, transphenoidal excision of
tumours.
General Surgery: Patients who underwent cholecystectomy, mastectomy, gastrectomy,
appendectomy, herniorraphy, exploratory laparotomy, colostomy, ileostomy, mass excision.
Trauma Surgery: Patients who underwent chest tube thoracostomy.
Uro-surgery: Patients who underwent cystoscopy, TURP, TURBT, RGP, nephrectomy,
pelveolithotomy.
Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft,
pericardiectomy, pericardiostomy.
Orthopaedics: Patients who underwent open reduction, closed reduction, debridement, hip
replacement, including patients with skeletal, skin tractions and casts.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Patients who underwent normal deliveries, caesarean section,
fractional curettage, total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salphyngo oophorectomy.
