FALL 2014 DRIVER EDUCATION INFORMATION

APPLICATION PROCEDURES


Due to limited availability, a maximum of 80 students will be selected for Fall 2014 Driver
Education. Registration will begin in District Office on November 3, 2014 @ 2pm and end November
4, 2014 @ 4pm.

Driver Education consists of two (2) day a week, one day in car and one day in lecture class. The
sessions are 2:15 3:45 or 3:45 5:15. Once you are accepted, you will be assigned a driving day
and lecture day which cannot be changed. If you are in sports or have other commitments after
school that conflict with this schedule, it is suggested that you do not sign up as the fee is non-
refundable and the program is setup with just enough driving and lecture classes that are required
by New York State for you to obtain you certificate so there is no room for absences.

You will be notified of your acceptance upon registration. Students should print the application
and complete it with their parents. This completed application along with driver license/permit and
payment of the $380 fee (check or money order payable to William Floyd School District) must be
presented at registration. Schedules for all accepted students will be posted by November 6, 2014
in District Office. Each student will be assigned a specific day and time for class, which cannot be
changed.

All accepted students MUST attend a mandatory after school informational and enrollment
meeting on Friday, November 7, 2014 @ 2:00pm in the LGI Room 325. At the meeting, the
Driver Education Instructor will review policies, procedures, and expectations with all selected
accepted students. Students who are accepted and who do not attend this meeting will forfeit their
space, and the space will be given to another eligible student.

Procedures, Expectations and Attendance Requirements

In order to be issued a New York MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion certificate, New York
State law requires you to have 6 hours actual driving, 18 hours of in-car observation and 24 hours
of class lecture. Students are scheduled for exactly the number of hours required by New York
State. Absences involving extenuating circumstances require documentation and are considered
and/or approved on a case-by-case basis. Students and parents/guardians are advised that family
vacations, jobs, or participation on a sports team are not considered to be justifiable reasons for
absence. Any approved absence must be made up, and in those situations, students must arrange
with the teacher to make up the missed class. In cases where a student misses and in-car session,
it is the students responsibility to switch with another student if he/she cannot attend. If missing
sessions are not made up, the MV-285 cannot be issued. Students enrolled in Driver
Education are expected to be in good standing with respect to attendance and behavior for
the duration of the course. Students and parents please note: Any student who is absent
from a Driver education lecture or in-car class because of disciplinary action, such as a
suspension form school, will be dropped from the class. Lecture classes will take place at
William Floyd High School in the LGI Room 325 and in-car sessions are scheduled with Suffolk
Auto School. Students are not permitted to drive when wearing flip-flops, as it is unsafe and not
permitted by the driving school. Once Driver Education classes begin on Monday, November 10,
2014, NO REFUNDS will be issued for the course or classes.
