Om Swastiastu...
Did you know that these last couple of months happened to be one of the busiest times
for weddings on this island? We realize that many of our readers might have already
been through the wedding stage of their life, so instead of dedicating this edition to
weddings we decided to have the articles revolve around the theme of romance.
In DINE & DELIGHTS you can read about three superb venues for memorable
dinners a deux, whether youre still in the wooing stage, looking to pop the question
or want to celebrate a long-lasting love. In CRAFT & CULTURE we discuss Balinese
weddings while REST & RELAXATION gives you a sneak peek into the Alila Villas
Uluwatu, one of the many places dotting the island that is sought after by loved-ups.
Turn to FOTO FOLIO for images courtesy of Axioo, a company that is adept at
capturing special moments, from weddings to family time. As for those who are indeed
prepping for their wedding, weve got a compilation of ve breathtaking wedding
venues around the island as well as a quick Q & A with one of Balis senior wedding
organizers. Who knows, you might pick up some tips for your big day!
We hope you enjoy ipping through this edition and we hope you have a great time on
the island! May love in all its forms grace every day of your stay.

THE ABOVE ARE SOME ROMANTIC RESPONSES YOU MIGHT RECEIVE
WHEN ASKING COUPLES WHY THEY WANT TO GET MARRIED.
BUT WHAT IS THE REAL REASON THAT PEOPLE GET MARRIED?
DEFINING MARRIAGE
IN HINDU BALI
T
he world is lled with a
plethora of cultures and
attitudes, but in general
marriage can be dened
as a legal agreement that
generates rights and obligations
between spouses, their children and
their in-laws. It is not just about a
glamorous reception or an expensive
wedding ring the celebration is
only the beginning.
In the Balinese Hindu religion
there are four stages in life, called
Catur Asrama. To commit to married
life is to move into the second stage
of Grehasta Asrama, or the time for
forming a family. This comes after
Brahmacari Asrama, the stage of
gaining knowledge. The third stage
is Wanaprasta Asrama, or the time
for Hindus to increase their spiritual
consciousness and reduce the desire
for glitz and glamour. The nal stage
is Bhiksuka Asrama, which means
freedom. It is believed that true
happiness will come from the ability
to live without any bonds.

COMMITMENT &
RESPONSIBILITY
In Bali, getting married is not only
about passing on DNA but also
about community ties. The main
reason why Balinese Hindu parents
push their children to get married is
to make sure their family continues to
be a part of society. It is more than
just a union between two families;
there will be many responsibilities
that the newlyweds will have to take
over for their parents within their
extended family, the neighborhood
and society.
Another reason why Balinese
Hindus decide to marry is to have
a partner in maintaining the family
heritage. Heritage here refers to
neither property nor any other earthly
materials, but to the family temple.
Houses, businesses and anything
else handed over to newlyweds by
their parents are merely tools for
maintaining the family temple and
following through with their cultural
obligations in the future.
THE PROPOSAL
After casual talks between the bride
and groom and their parents, the
proposal, or Memandik ceremony,
is conducted the traditional way.
A priest will decide an appropriate
date for the proposal and wedding
day based on the Balinese calendar.
On the proposal day, the grooms
family will visit the brides house
Because we are in love with each other.

to talk with her extended family.
They will come bearing offerings
and gifts such as food, clothes and
jewelry to show their enthusiasm
for the wedding.
The elders from both sides will
then have a serious conversation
about their family trees, as well as
their visions and aims for the sacred
union. This is also the time for both
families to get to know to each
other better.

THE WEDDING
Mungkab Lawang is when the
grooms family will pick up the
bride. This symbolizes respect
from the grooms family to the
brides family, where they ask for
permission from the brides family
to let their daughter devote the
rest of her life to the family of the
groom. The eldest of the grooms
family knocks on the main door of
the brides family house with rhymes
that are answered by the eldest from
the brides side. After this the bride
Holy water in an
adorned container
BALI&BEYOND NOVEMBER 2014 25
is taken to the grooms house for the
wedding ceremony.
The ceremony begins with
Biyakala and Prayascita, a
purication led by a priest.
Afterwards the groom and bride
exchange vows and sign a wedding
certicate witnessed by both families
and a community leader. After the
legal paperwork has been signed,
the newlyweds pray at the grooms
family temple.
Next comes Medagang-
dagangan. Medangan means to
sell, and in this unique ceremony the
bride acts as a seller and the groom
acts as a buyer who wants to buy
whatever is being sold by the bride
(usually food). After the bride sets a
base price for the goods, the groom
bargains with her until they nally
agree on a fair price. This ceremony
represents the times in married life
that they might not be on the same
page and must compromise in order
to uphold their vows.
At the end of Medagang-
dagangan ceremony the groom cuts
a mat held by the bride with a keris
(Balinese traditional sword). This
represents the consummation of the
marriage and the hope for offspring,
in order to build a complete family.
Finally, the bride and groom pray
again at the grooms family temple
to wish for happiness in their
married life ahead.

Fun Facts
Wedding ceremonies in Bali used to take a week to perform, but
nowadays can be completed in less than three days.
Everyone from the extended family to the neighbors will get involved in
organizing a wedding, from the preparation all the way to the ceremony
itself. So basically there is no need for a wedding organizer!
Wedding ceremonies in Bali will vary due to various local customs.

THE WEDDING
PLANNER
Our quick Q & A with M.H. Gusri,
who has been a professional wedding
consultant in Bali for almost two
decades now.
Bali & Beyond (BB): When is the
busiest time in Bali for weddings?
M.H. Gusri (MHG): Actually, Bali is
busy with weddings all year around,
so it depends on which market we
are talking about. Indonesians and
expats living in Indonesia usually
wed in September, October or
before the Chinese New Year.
Japanese couples go for June, while
Chinese prefer September and
October. Australians like to take
advantage of the school holidays in
September so their guests can come
with their children for a holiday in
addition to attending the wedding.
Based on my experience, I can
say that September is the busiest
because all markets are in Bali at the
same time.
BB: What is the most challenging
wedding youve ever handled?
MHG: The Balinese-style wedding
ceremony for His Royal Highness
Vajiralongkorn - The Prince of
Thailand. It was in 2002 at the Ritz
Carlton Jimbaran (now the AYANA
Resort). It was challenging because
everything had to be per royal
standards and procedures... But it
was a great opportunity to serve the
royal family indeed.
BB: Could you name some famous
guests who have attended weddings
that you organized?
MHG: I have organized many
weddings and seen many
Indonesian and international
celebrities as well as government
ofcials and prominent businessmen
attend. Anggun C. Sasmi, Preston
Bailey, Aburizal Bakrie, and Setya
Novanto are some of the guests who
have been at weddings I organized.

BB: In your opinion, what are the top
5 most breathtaking places for small,
intimate weddings in Bali?
MHG: Each place is unique and has
its own character, so it is difcult for
me to choose. But in terms of high
demand it would be Tirtha Uluwatu,
Tirtha Luhur, The Edge, Khayangan
Estate, and The Sanctus.
BB: What about your top 5 venues
for a much larger number of
attendees?
MHG: To accommodate a large
number of guests, it is better to use
a venue inside a resort. My top ve
would be The Mulia Resort, Alila
Uluwatu, Royal Santrian, Conrad
Bali, and AYANA Resort.
BB: What is the most challenging
thing about your job?
MHG: Organizing weddings is
exciting. When I entered this eld in
1998, I never imagined the kind of
industry this would become, or that
Bali would become such a popular
wedding destination. Even the local
government has recently formed a
Bali Wedding Association to look
after wedding services. Organizing
weddings is a great opportunity
and of course each couple always
has unique requests maybe this
is what you would call the most
challenging part.
BB: What is the most rewarding
thing about your job?
its better to book the venue straight
away. Many venues in Bali are
booked two years ahead, especially
during high season such as
September and October.
After you book the venue,
the rest is easy. Your wedding
organizer will assist you with nding
vendors. There are numerous great
photographers and videographers,
decoration companies, make-up
artists, catering and wedding cake
services, wedding singers and
entertainers available in Bali.
Obtaining a Legal Wedding
Certicate in Bali is possible for
Indonesians and foreigners; ask your
wedding organizer to help you.
Choose a wedding organizer who
has many years of experience; dont
choose because of lower cost.
And lastly, be happy!
MHG: Besides getting paid, you
mean? [laughs] I am joking. When
a wedding runs smoothly and on
schedule, and at the end of event I
get nice words of appreciation from
the bride and groom, this is actually
the most rewarding thing for me.
BB: What kind of dcor and color
trends do you think will dominate
weddings in 2015?
MHG: Each couple has their own
favorite colors and decoration
designs for their ceremony. Some
will follow trends while others will
do whatever they like. My top ve
color combinations are Pink, Khaki &
Gray; Coral, Peach & Powder Blue;
Sangria, Silver & Lavender; Navy,
Cream & Blush, and Periwinkle &
Peach. Decorations will depend on
the location, but I like the themes
Romantic Luxe, Wild Garden,
Crowning Glory, Classic and Clean,
and Pretty Pastels.
BB: What advice can you give to
couples who are considering nuptials
in Bali?
MHG: Before coming to Bali,
make a shortlist of preferred venues
because there are so many here and
you cannot visit them all.
Make an appointment for a site
visit with each venue. You can ask
your wedding organizer to arrange
the appointments.
If you like a venue and the
required date is still available,

asked the

on duty, with a grin. I scanned the
room, which was devoid of walls
on two sides and opened up to a

As long as they dont come near

It had been a challenging week and
I was eyeing the daybed to my right,
ready to crumble onto it soon as I

As if sensing my mood, the kind
butler quickly nished the room

A DREAMLIKE OASIS
A couple hours of quiet time in one
of their villas is the perfect way
to put a weary mind at ease. The
oversized daybed is the best place

located indoors) and has a gorgeous

Indeed, the open-plan design
of the 84 villas and the entire
property in general is really worth
marveling at. The chalky white
batu palimanan from Jogjakarta
used for the walls, and the accents
of locally-sourced materials such
as lava rocks, bamboo, rattan
and wood (from recycled railway
sleepers and telephone poles), make
the Alila Villas Uluwatu a dreamlike
oasis that blends in seamlessly
with the enchanting limestone cliff
surroundings.
ROMANTIC RETREAT
While these villas can certainly be
much appreciated by lone travelers,
it is quite obvious that they were

villa that are perfect for couples
reveling in romance. Lay side by

while dreaming up plans for the

and say everything by saying

My epic Christmas time tomes,

And dont get me started on my

shouting my name to the sunset

I could go on, but I wont. To the

the same thing that some of Kutas

Bunnings, get some timber, build a
bridge and get over it.
This glam and privileged lifestyle
has come with sacrices; uprooting
oneself to go halfway around the
world and into the unknown, coming
to terms with a plummeting income
and not being able to regularly see
family and familiar faces, among
other things. You can (wisely?) opt
for security and boredom, or you
can take a risk. The risk comes with
reward but dont think for a moment
that it does not also come with its
own set of obstacles.
After almost feeling guilty talking
about what amounts to daily life
here, Ive decided to embrace it,
friends or no friends. This writer is
bucking the system and has done
well, so please dont rain on my
sunny parade. I suspect that when
I morph back into a penniless of

slowly gravitate back into my life.

past a small creek and
to a rice eld where
we were greeted
by the unmistakable
sound of goats. We couldnt see
their pen from where we stood, but
they made their presence known by
creating quite a ruckus.
When we reached the Kapal

bamboo structure built in the shape
of a ships hull where John Hardy
jewelry is on display for purchase,
we found a lone goat blocking
the path.
Hes always nding a way

a shrug. Maybe because hes

We had only just arrived and
already the contrast to our previous
experience with the brand was
extraordinary. The last time we met
with the John Hardy team had been

EVERYTHING
BY HAND
At the John Hardy workshop we
saw how everything is done by
hand, even the illustrations in the
development stages. This is a
process that Creative Director and
Head Designer, Guy Bedarida, had
grown accustomed to at Van Cleef
who needs to see and learn more
about what you are buying before
swiping your credit card, then you
should denitely consider a tour of
the John Hardy workshop. There is
so much to discover and you can
even get a glimpse of the design

in action.

& Arpels and brought with him to
John Hardy.
We looked intently over the
shoulders of the illustrators in the
Design Center as they used ne
point Winsor Newton watercolor
brushes to create shading, texture
and an astounding level of detail
that made their renderings look
like photographs.
There is taksu in making jewelry
by hand, our host said, referring to
the Balinese term that can loosely be
translated as the soul of various art
forms. Its more meaningful, soulful
and beautiful. If we dont continue
making jewelry by hand, all these
techniques will die out.
She was referring to the skills of
the 650 artisans (and 200 others
working outside the workshop)
handed down through generations,
which include wax carving and
metalsmithing.
We dont use CAD-CAM,
she continued. It kills jobs. We
are focused on job preservation,
especially heritage techniques.
During our tour of the workshop,
we stopped every so often to hover
quietly in the background of various
rooms. It was incredible to watch
these artisans hunched over their
workstations completely focused
on the task at hand, whether it
was carving detailed wax models,
hammering metal, soldering,
polishing or weaving chains link by
link (among other things).
You cant help but shake your
head in disbelief, as the steps from
start to nish seem endless. We
knew previously that jewelry making
is an intricate process, but did not
realize the extent of it until we saw it
with our own eyes.
Sitting at a table underneath
the shady banyan trees where the
employees normally take their lunch
break (lunch is provided by the
company, with ingredients coming
from their organic farm and cooked
daily in the open-re kitchen), we let
it all sink in. We had a newfound
appreciation for the level of skill
required to transform the 100%
reclaimed gold and silver into
incredible jewelry that is really a
work of art.
PAY IT FORWARD
Aside from preserving local artisan
techniques, John Hardy is also
dedicated to passing on new skills
and knowledge. Through their Job
for Life program, the brand has
worked together with the Jodie
OShea Orphanage in Denpasar for
almost ve years. The apprentices
selected for the program are
provided a two-year internship
opportunity to develop skills of their
own preference, after which they
can apply for a full-time position
within or outside the company.
BALI&BEYOND NOVEMBER 2014 61
During our visit we met with a
young man named Erikson who had
just begun his design apprenticeship
three weeks prior. Although he was
quite shy, from our brief conversation
with him we could clearly sense his
delight at the learning opportunity.
As for one of their success stories,
a talented woman named Asnat is
now working full-time for the design
team as a Junior Illustrator. Program
graduates are also hired into various
other teams such as the kitchen staff,
IT and even Sales.
John Hardys recent partnership
with the National Development
Planning Agency of Indonesia
(BAPPENAS) is another form of
their social commitment. As a
leader in sustainable luxury jewelry,
John Hardy is advising Lombok
pearl farmers on jewelry making
techniques, quality control, safety,
sustainability and environmental
protection. This important
collaboration is marked by the
Special Naga Collection, which
incorporates Lombok golden pearls
and celebrates the ancient tale of
Balis dragon guardian and his
beloved pearl in the sea (head to
their website to see their video of
this tale).
The brand also has certication
from the Responsible Jewellery
Council (RJC), an international not-
for-prot organization that audits
the sourcing of diamonds, gold and
platinum group metals, as well as
business compliance with the highest
standards of human and labor rights,
environmental preservation, mining
practices and product disclosure.
They were required to go through a
stringent two year-long audit before
nally receiving this certication.
OPEN EYES
At the end of the tour we perused the
Kapal Bambu Boutique with a whole
new perspective and appreciation for
the intricate process behind each and
every piece displayed. The boutique
is located just a few steps away from
the long table, so if you begin your
tour with lunch, this will bring your
experience to a full circle.

WHERE GLASS
COMES ALIVE
BALI&BEYOND NOVEMBER 2014 63
I
f you have yet to become
intimately familiar with the
Bali art scene, you probably
wouldnt know that on the
way to Ubud is the studio and
gallery of one of the most talented
glass blowers in the world Ron
Seivertson of Horizon Glassworks.
With three expansive oors and over
1,000 square meters of space, this
gallery is more than impressive.
Its a veritable museum of glass
art with pieces large and small,
from the prized Java Man, a US$
390,000 display of an anatomically
accurate pre-Neolithic Homo erectus
skeleton resting in black sand to the
US$ 150 a piece colorful jellysh-
shaped paperweights or handmade
drinking glasses priced as low as
US$ 8. There is literally something
for everyone!
INCREDIBLE ART
The Java Man is a part of
Seivertsons most prized collection,
the Glass Age Series. A handpicked
group of master glass blowers
worked tirelessly in his studio during
two six-week sessions over a six-
month period to produce all 135
pieces in the series, which include
full-sized spears, a saber-toothed cat
skull, and numerous other historical
impressionistic artifacts. These pieces
are so masterfully executed you
would never guess they were from
hand blown glass.
Blowing glass not only has the
ability to satisfy the artist in all of us
but can be therapeutic as well. A
recent student of Seivertsons with
multiple sclerosis was transformed
mentally, emotionally and physically
by the art of blowing glass. His
days are now spent with purpose,
passion, focus and challenge, and
not surprisingly his condition has
dramatically improved.
Seivertson, who comes from
generations of glass artists in
Europe, intends to share his
knowledge to advance the
worldwide Glass Art Studio
THERES SOMETHING ABOUT HOT MOLTEN GLASS

INTRIGUING AND MESMERIZING

Movement. By offering advice
on how to set up glass blowing
studios, people will be able to
create glass art in the comfort of
their own homes. He is currently
working on developing a one-of-a-
kind International Glass Art School
where master glass blowers from all
over the world will teach courses at
an expansive 4,000 square meter
Horizon Glassworks property.
CLASSES &
COLLABORATIONS
Horizon Glassworks offers beginning
to advanced glass blowing
instruction, where the courses range
from 2.5 hour introduction sessions
to month-long artist in residence
programs for glass art professionals.
The intro course starts out with
the very basics and by the end
participants produce their own hand
blown glass paperweights. Horizon
also welcomes the public to drop in
and watch, as glass blowing is a
fascinating process to observe.
At the time of this writing
Seivertson was in the midst of
collaborating with Roy Gonzalez,
a world famous sports action/
counterculture surf artist, to produce
one-of-a-kind glass Graal works
(Holy Grail in French). Seivertson
uses a rare formula of enamels that
tolerate hot glass being layered
and stretched as the piece is
being blown. The resulting piece
encases the paint inside the glass
forever. Painting highly detailed
Graals is a tedious process that
BALI&BEYOND NOVEMBER 2014 65
takes countless hours to perfect, and
the nished pieces of glass art are
of museum quality.
This is an unprecedented
project working with Roys images,
Seivertson said. The specialized
paint we use is obsolete and I
only have a small inventory left.
The magnitude of producing these
historical pieces is signicant not
only in the community of glass
blowing but on many different levels
in the world of art.
Gonzalez plans to display the
collaborative Graals at Art Basel in
Miami this December. He is currently
in Bali to focus on producing
whimsical characters and fantasy-
lled illustrations for a series of
bedtime stories that promise to turn
the childrens book world upside
down. For more information on the
upcoming release of this cutting
edge childrens book series visit
www.LitlBobby.com.
Located on the left side of the
road about 3.5 kilometers past the
Bali Bird Park on the way to Ubud,
Horizon Glassworks is a perfect
place to make a stop and watch a
real master glass blower in action.
Better yet, you can call ahead
and schedule some hands-on time.
Horizon Glassworks is open from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday
to Saturday.

nest local craftsmen are actually
gathered at the Ancol Art Market,
better known as Pasar Seni. This
market is operated by a state-owned
enterprise that runs the 552-hectare
tourist area called Taman Impian
Jaya Ancol. For many curators this
is where the citys most intriguing
pieces can be discovered, but for the
96 artists who work at Pasar Seni, it
is merely their humble work place.
When I visited Pasar Seni recently
I decided to arrive bright and
early. It was 8 a.m. and already
everybody was up and about
several people were raking up the
dry leaves shed by the abundant
trees, a nice breeze was blowing
and the birds were singing. But
besides myself and a group of 40
local students and their chaperones,
there were no other visitors.
There are 120 small cottages that
measure about 6 square meters in
size, and the rst to catch my eye
were two adjoining huts lled with
shadow puppets and animal skin
rugs with a sign that read Wahono:
The Puppet Artist.
Inside, Wahono Purwocarito
was working on a meter-long
shadow puppet called Baladewa,
painstakingly drawing intricate
swirl patterns with black acrylic. He
explained that the piece had already
taken a month of labor so far.
It will be nished in two days
if I keep going at this rate. Almost
there, he said without lifting his
head. I pulled up a chair and sat
across from him. The moment I did
so, he began telling me stories.
It turns out that Wahono has been
working in the area since before
Pasar Seni was constructed. Back
in the day he was but a 20-year-old
puppet maker who participated in
a night market held routinely every
month at Ancol Bay. The night
market grew in popularity to the
point that many people felt the need
to create a special place to house
the local artists, and a successful
entrepreneur and collector named
Ir. Ciputra was particularly moved
by this idea. So he funded the
entire project in 1977 through his

Wahono explained that as an
artist, a steady and predictable
monthly income was always out
of the question, but the universe
has been kind to him in return for
his efforts to preserve Javanese
culture. Wahonos long list of clients
includes President Soeharto, who
ordered a set of puppets to be used
for decoration. He has even created
wayang kulit for the Mangkunegaran
Palace in Surakarta, and during his
so-called golden days he was able
to tour countries like Japan
and Australia.
I have clients from China,
Taiwan and many other countries. I
exported quite a lot of skin rugs and
puppets between 1998 and 2005,
said the father of ve. He soon
fell silent, seemingly determined
to complete the Baladewa piece
as quickly as possible, so I bid
him farewell and continued my
exploration of the area.
As I went deeper into the cluster
of cottages I saw many paintings
decorating their walls, the colors
almost springing out at me. They
were spread out against shabby
backgrounds and so the contrast
was particularly intriguing. I passed
two middle-aged men who were
chatting, and Arya, the younger of
the two, agreed to show me around
his studio.
Aryas working space was smaller
than Wahonos, full of stacked
canvases and unnished paintings.
Like many of the artists, Arya also
chains and the most prestigious
galleries in Jakarta.
The occupants of Pasar Seni
are called many things, he
said. Realists, impressionists,
expressionists and abstract artists.
Critics have referred to Aryas work
as surrealist and decorative.
Personally, I like to mix
everything depending on my mood.
But they can call it what they like,
he said, laughing. Arya then picked
up his brush and went on to nish
his painting.
If youre interested in having a
look around Pasar Seni, it takes
about 40 minutes by car to get to
Ancol from Jakarta city center. Taxis
and public buses can be hailed from
Blok M Terminal and free shuttles
are available to take visitors around
once youve arrived at Taman Impian

main gate is Rp. 25,000/person,
not including fees for each individual
activity within the complex.

lived inside his studio. He told me
that the piece he was currently
working on was inspired by marine
pollution and was headed for an
exclusive exhibition in Jakartas hip
Kemang area.
They are willing to pay about
thirty million rupiah just to get this
painting displayed in the gallery for
a few days, he said.
It seems that Arya has come
a long way since his early days
drawing cartoons for the newspaper
Pikiran Rakyat. Back then the
paper would pay him Rp. 10,000
(less than a dollar) for each of his
drawings, and this allowed him to
pay his way through high school.
Now at 42 years old and without
any formal education in art, Arya

HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot
more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
