Operating Instructions for Screw
Pumps, Type Series SD..G9

Date 12/10/82
The ALLWEILER screw pumps of type series SD are self-priming
three-screw types of positive displacement pumps for handling
media with lubricating properties. They were especially
designed for being used in hydraulic systems.
Depending upon the viscosity of the fluid to be pumped, the
pumps can be used up to a max. d eLf, very pressure of 210 bars.
The type series comprises 4 sizes each of which is designed
with several screw pitches thus allowing a very close adap-
tation to required delivery quantities ranging from
10 - 160 limine
The pumps may be mounted either horizontally or vertically.
The pump drive may'be by a flexible coupling only; great
radial forces must not act on the shaft journal of the
pump.
2. Design
The hardened and ground screws run in a very inherently
stable casing of an artificially aged aluminum alloy in
evacuated screw bearing surfaces thus allowing very good
running properties and consequently a long service life
of the pumps to be reached.
Both, the driving screw and the working screws are hydrau-
lically balanced. For the working screws, this is achieved
by directing the operating pressure through bore holes into
the balancing bushes 8. Thus, the operating pressure is
- - I admitted to the end faces of the working screws on the
delivery and suction side, hydraulically caused axial
forces cannot be incurred. For the driving screw to be
hydraulically balanced, the diameter of the bushing safely
shrunk onto the screw is measured so that the pressure-
loaded end faces are of equal size towards both, the suction
and coupling side. In this way, the forces cancel each
other. The bushing safely shrunk onto the driving screw and
running in bearing ring 10 serves for both, the radial and
axial bearing of the screws; at the same time, the gap
between shrunk-on bushing and bearing ring separates the
pressure chamber from the stuffing box chamber.
3. Mode of operation
Through the suction connection, the medium is pumped into
the suction chamber of the pump from where the fluid flows
into the screw chambers continuously formed by the rotary
motion at the screw end on the suction side.

Due to the rotary motion advancing, the chambers filled
with the fluid to be pumped travel from the suction side
to the delivery side during which travel the closed chamber
volume does not change. At the screw end on the delivery
side, the chamber opens towards the delivery chamber. The
medium is steadily pushed out into the delivery chamber
entering the delivery line through the delivery connection.
Because of the screw length as fixed for this series, there
are always several chambers between the delivery and suction
side. They provide for the sealings between the suction
and operating pressure of the pump. Due to the gap loss
from chamber to chamber, the same pressure difference comes
up inevitably between all neighbouring chambers. Thus, the
pressure is gradually built up over the screw length from
the pressure in the suction chamber to the prevailing oper-
ating pressure. The low rate of pressure rise connected
therewith is one of the causes of the low pulsation and the
especially low sound pressure level of the screw pump.
Moreover, a low rate of pressure rise has a favourable
effect on the lifetime of hydraulic fluids.
The throttling space formed by bearing ring 10 and the
driving screw is a gap sealing between and stuffing
box chamber. Due to the throttling effect, the amonnt of
leakage flowing through this gap reaches the stuffing box
chamber;' pressureless, from where it-is through
bore holes into the suction chamber.
The amount of leakage in the stuffing box chamber lubricates
simultaneously the shaft sealing ring 183 dissipating the
generated frictional heat to the suction chamber.
4. Pump mounting
4.1 By means of two screws, the pump is fixed by way of the
(
front flange whose dimensions correspond to SAE Standards.
The socket for the spigot must be designed so that exact
alignment of pump and motor is reached during assembly
requiring no additional adjustment.
4.2 Prior to fitting the coupling, same must be heated up to at
least 80
0
Fixing the coupling in cold condition may lead
to destruction of the pump.
4.3 Attend to sufficientdistancebetween the shaft ends of pump
and motor which should be approx. 4 mm.
4.4 Following the assembly of pump and motor, the unit must allow
of manual turning at the coupling. It is recommended to
check the coupling alignment at least with the straightedge.;
4.5 Suction and delivery lines must be designed so that during
standstill of the unit the pump cannot run empty. Thus, dry
operation of the pump after a prolonged standstill period is
prevented.

4.6 Prior to being connected to the pump, all pipe lines, gate
valves and the oil tank must be thoroughly cleaned and
flushed resp. Mounting residues such as welding beads, steel
chips and the like would destroy the pump internals.
4.7 Suction and delivery lines be connected stress-free.
Suitable routing of the pipe line must secure that no
material- forces are transmitted onto the pump, not even
with the lines being heated.
The pump must not be used as a fixed point for the pipe
lines.
5. Start-up
5.1 Prior to the first start-up, the motor must be checked for
proper sense of rotation.
5.2 Prior to the first start-up, the pump must be filled with
fluid to be pumped. Pumps with a supply line or those used
as oil submerged pumps are filled automatically.
Filling of the pump prior to the first start-up prevents
dry operation which would result in pump destruction.
5.3 Open suction and delivery gate valves.
'-""'" .'
5.4 The pump must first be started without pressure.
5.5 Pressureless operation must be maintained until the entire
unit has been vented. Open appropriate venting screws in
the unit. Incase of horizontal pump installation with
overhead pipe line connections, and in case of vertical
installation, the pump is vented automatically.
5.6 The unit having been vented, the pump may be run to the
operating pressure.
6. Dismountingof pump
,.
6.1 The pump can be dismounted by slackening the two fastening
screws.
6.2 Draw off coupling half from the driving screw. The coupling
half must be heated so as to allow withdrawal without de-
struction of the pump components.
6.3 Remove key 290.
6.4 Slacken screw connection 201 and remove pump cover on the
end side 4.
6.5 Remove balancing bushes 8 from the balancing pin of the
working screw, the working screws can now be drawn out of
the casing.

6.6 Slacken screw connection 200 and remove pump cover on the
driving side 3 with radial seal ring 183.
The radial seal ring should be removed from the cover only
if the seal ring needs to be replaced. For these purposes
remove circlip 250 and support disk 260 from the cover.
6.7 Screw set 12, i.e. driving screw and working screws can now
be withdrawn from the casing. During mounting, the screws
are match-marked at the works by -means of colour dots. The
colour marking is provided at the profile end on the suction
side. The colour marking having faded, appropriate marks
have to be provided prior to disassembly of the screw set.
During mounting, the screw set must be re-assembled in the
same order of succession. The colour marking for all three
screws must point in one direction.
6.8 If necessary, bearing ring 10 can now be withdrawn.
7. Mounting of disassembled pump
7.1 Prior to assembling the components, absolutely see to it
that all parts are free from dirt and greasy
Assembly of the pump is performed in inverse oreer than
described for dismounting.
7.2 When mounting screw set 12 absolutely see to it t'lat the
colour marks of the three screws should point in une di-
rection. Prior to being mounted, screw set 12 must be
well oiled with clean oil.
7.3 Prior to mounting the shaft seal ring, the front part of
the driving screw must be well oiled so as to avoid any
damages to the seal lip during fitting.
8. Maintenance
Lubrication of all sliding parts is provided by the pumped
fluid thus being completely maintenance-free.
9. Spare parts
9.1 The spare parts provided are those parts in the spare parts
list marked with an asterisk.
9.2 When ordering spare parts, always quote the pump number
hammered in the rating plate of the pump.
9.3 For mounting and repair purposes, trained specialists will
be at your disposal, if need be.
