CHATUCHAK BANGKOK

Union Mall Bangkok

Strategically located opposite the ever-busy Central Lad Prao, Union Mall caters especially for a
younger crowd, mainly university students, young office workers and those who find Central Lad
Prao too expensive and Chatuchak Weekend Market too hot. Union Mall stands eight storeys
tall with a total area of 150,000 square metres, housing over 1,000 retail shops. It boasts easy
access from the MRT Phahon Yothin station, an international food court, a myriad of fast food
chains, entertainment areas, tutorial schools, a fitness centre and a supermarket. The open-air
market just outside the air-conditioned mall is also worth a browse (open everyday from 17:00
onwards). You'll find an interesting range of clothing items, bags, shoes, and fashion accessories
at affordable prices.
Opening Hours: 10:00 - 22:00
Location: Lad Prao Intersection, opposite Central Lao Prao
MRT: Phahon Yothin
BANGKOK WEEKEND MARKET
Hop on the skytrain (BTS) to Mo Chit station, take exit no. 1 and follow the crowd until you see
rows of canvas stalls selling clothes. Turn right while continuing to follow the crowd and you will
see a small entrance that leads into the market (clothing section).
Another option is to take the subway (MRT) to Chatuchak Park station (exit no.1), then follow
the crowd until you arrive at the small entrance that leads into the market (clothing section). For
the plant and flower section, get off at Kampheng Phet MRT station (exit no. 1).
Opening Hours: on Saturdays and Sundays, 09:00 - 18:00, and Fridays 18:00 - 24:00. Plant
sections are also open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 07:00 - 18:00.
Chatuchak can be roughly divided into 11 categories:

5 GREAT SHOPS AT CHATUCHAK
For cool clothing we recommend getting off at Kamphaeng Phet. Although there is lane and
section numbers to help you locate particular stalls, there is no definitive list of the shops at
Chatuchak weekend market. Its part of the JJ Market experience to get a little lost amongst
the wired and wonderful stalls, but if you would like a more definitive overview of Chatuchak,
our favourite map is the Nancy Chandler one, which at least gives an idea of what is where. We
have picked five favourite shops at Chatuchak weekend market that we think are worth
checking out:
1. Kinnaree Silk and Linen
Selling smart dresses, skirts, trousers and tops in a range of beautiful colours from pale
aquamarine to candy pink, you are practically guaranteed to find something special. The silk
is some of the finest you can find at Chatuchak weekend market, and whether you are
looking for a simple top or a wrap dress with flower detailing there are plenty of options.
Prices start at just under 1000 baht, to over 5000 baht if you want something that is made
to measure. Kinnaree also stock a range of jewellery that complements their clothing
selection. Location: Section 9 / Soi 18
2. Guate Leather
This colourful leather goods store has some funky Paul Smith inspired stripes on the shop
facade that catch your eye, but not quite as much as the stunning leather handbags that
hang from the ceiling. The quality of the leather and craftsmanship is amazing, but Guate
also only release their bags in a limited run, so you are unlikely to spot anyone else with the
same bag, especially as they come in a rainbow of colours. The bags range in size from small
shoulder clutches to roomy shoppers. There are also a range of wallets, purses, key chains
and rucksacks, so there is something for everyone. On our last trip there we spotted a
beautiful curved handbag, large enough to carry all my paraphernalia but still look chic, and
given the quality, a snip at only 4,000 baht. Location: Section 24 / Soi 33
3. Anyadharu
Selling a range of bath and body products, Anyadharu offers customers the chance to blend
their own natural oil scents. Aromas range from classics like lavender and bergamot to more
Thai perfumes like galangal and sweet basil. Everything for sale here is 100% natural and
smells delicious a fantastic gift to take home, especially for yourself! If you have any
questions the staff are very happy to explain how Anyadharus scent library works and
advise you on your choices, with prices starting at around 300 baht. This is also my favourite
spot in Chatuchak weekend market for a break. At the back of Anyadharu you will find a
small selection of tables where you can enjoy one of their amazing Lann Chat iced teas with
a small plate of sandwiches. Location: Section 3 / Soi 3
4. Backyard Jewellery
We adore the selection of great value jewellery that is on sale at Backyard Jewellery in
Chatuchak Market. Its playful, cute and slightly quirky. The collection has shades of Alice in
Wonderland, with cute Cheshire Cat earrings, White Rabbit pendants and red rose earrings.
As well as plenty of cute things, Backyard Jewellerys Chatuchak shop also has some more
modern pieces for sophisticated night-time looks, chunky rings with encrusted pearls and a
beehive pendant with black and white stripes. Be sure to rummage through the wicker
basket at the front of the shop, in it you will find Backyard collection of T-shirts decorated
with watercolour animals and unusual prints. Prices are excellent, with costume jewellery
prices starting at only 300 baht and cool little T shirts starting at only 150 baht. Location:
Section 4 / Soi 2
5. Masque & 17:09
For edgy mens and womens clothing head to Masque & 17:09, a wooden fronted boutique
in section 3. The collection focuses on casual wear, with racks of patterned shirts, shorts and
a small selection of natty trilbies for the guys and T-shirt dresses, blouses and boyfriend
jeans for the girls. On our last visit we couldnt help but return with bags of goodies,
including a paint-dipped T-shirt at 280 baht, a short polka dot dress at only 550 baht and a
canvas shopper that has an old Vogue sketch printed on both sides for 580 baht. One of the
greatest things about Chatuchak Weekend Market is the chance to discover up and coming
labels and designers. Masque and 17:09 really encompass this by offering original fashion
for both men and women. Location: Section 3 / Soi 46

CHINATOWN
With its lack of a Skytrain (BTS) or underground (MRT), the easiest way to reach Chinatown - if you want
to avoid the traffic - is by boat (Chao Phraya River Express).
Get off at the Ratchawong Pier, and walk up from Ratchawong Road to Sampeng Lane and Yaowarat
Road. Ordinary buses 1, 7, 8, 37, 49 and 75 will take also take you here, but it's much better to travel by
boat. The Ratchawong Pier is just a few hundred meters from Yaowarat Road and Sampeng Lane.
You'll know that you've arrived when you reach the Odeon Circle, where a huge ceremonial Chinese
gate unmistakably marks the entrance. Chinatown itself is an easy to explore on foot and, in fact, there
really isn't any other way.
An alternative to get to Chinatown - and to avoid at least some of the traffic - would be to take the
underground (MRT) to Hualamphong station, and either a taxi or tuk-tuk from there.
WHAT TO SEE IN CHINATOWN
Saphanthawong Museum
This community museum is dedicated to the early Chinese immigrants of Bangkok. Set within
the same compound as Wat Traimit, it is worth checking out if youre eager to learn more about
the history of the place.
Opening Hours: 09:00 - 17:00
Wat Mangkon Kamalawat
Bangkok's most important and largest Chinese-Buddhist temple is the hub of activities during
festivals like Chinese New Year and contains spectacular Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian shrines.
It dates back to 1872, and was called Wat Leng Nui Yee until King Rama V changed it to Wat
Mangkon Kamalawat (which means Dragon Lotus Temple). You enter via a decorative
passageway from Charoenkrung Road and into a large courtyard. The low-lying temple complex
within is decorated in typical Chinese style, intricately carved dragons and other familiar motifs
throughout. Inside the various rooms are altars to Buddha as well as Taoist deities. Explore its
passages and you'll find a small cloister with cases of gilded Buddha images in the double
'abhaya mudra', or 'Buddha teaches reason' position.
Opening Hours: 09:00 - 17:00
Location: Charoenkrung Road, Chinatown
How to get there: From the pier, walk up Ratchawong road to Charoen Krung, turn right and
Wat Mangkol Kamalawat will be on your left a little more than one block down
Wat Traimit The Temple of the Golden Buddha
Opening Hours: 09:00 - 17:00
Address: Traimit Rd., Chinatown (west of Hua Lampong Station, just west of the intersection of
Krung Kasem and Rama IV rds.)
How to get there: Walk southwest on Traimit Rd and look for a school on the right with a
playground; the wat is up a flight of stairs overlooking the school

KHAOSAN ROAD
Despite the odd motorcyclist attempting to prove otherwise, the only way to navigate Khao San Road
itself is by foot. To plot your escape from backpacker central you never have to go far - eager tuk-tuk
drivers are always hawking for trade from either end, and there's a steady stream of taxis coming and
going. Agree a price with a tuk-tuk driver before setting off, and when it comes to taxi drivers always
insist he switch his metre on. Khao San Road is not located close to a Skytrain or underground station,
but this certainly hasn't put a damper on the area's popularity.

8. The Pleasures of Pat Thai
Be sure to try 'pat thai'. A trip to Khao San Road wouldn't be complete without sampling the
street vendors' famous take on this popular, tasty, nutritious and, above all, cheap Thai dish.
There are Thai-style omelets too and, on Soi Rambuttri, grilled fish and meat available. For
vitamin and protein bursts enjoy Thailand's plentiful natural produce in the form of fresh
tropical fruit (cut into chunks for easy eating), blended fruit shakes and - if you're brave or drunk
enough - fried insects. Once you've completed your initiation into spicy food, head to nearby
Phra Arthit Road for trendy hole-in-the-wall restaurants popular with arty Thais. Or try
Banglamphu Market, which begins about 50 metres to the right on Chakrapong Road. Here an
aromatic and wholly authentic array of stalls peddle noodles soups, curries, grilled oddities and
odd looking deserts. These alternatives to the staple backpacker diet of pad thai, banana
pancakes and watermelon shakes are notable, not only for usually being more delicious than
what's sold on Khao San Road, but also being much, much cheaper.
Location: Khao San Road
9. Tom Yum Kung
Named after the Thais signature dish, Tom Yum Kung is arguably the best and the most famous
Thai restaurant on Khao San Road. The menu consists strictly to fine Thai cuisine. Highlights
include of course, our favourite, tom yum kung (spicy prawn soup), fried minced shrimp and
scallops, spicy seafood salad, papaya salad with crab, and spicy black-banded trevally salad. The
restaurant features beautiful dcor and a cozy atmosphere. Good service and friendly staff. It's
highly recommended.

Wat Chanasongkram
Proof that the sacred can survive amidst the profane is Wat Chanagonkram. Its location in
backpacker enclave Banglamphu, close to Khao San Road and mildly less frenetic Soi Rambuttri,
belies both the ancient heritage and the tranquillity of this small temple and its shady grounds.
Its origins date back to the Ayutthaya period, but it was restored in 1787, during the reign of
Rama I. This was after the famous victory at the battle of nine armies, which explains the name -
Wat Chanasongkhram Rajaworamahaviharn, which translates as 'victory in war'. At the rear is a
sedate tree-lined courtyard, including temple housing where monks and lay workers still reside.
Within the temple compound is a small courtyard. The windows and gable of the small 'Ubosot',
or ordination hall, feature elaborately gilded wood, while inside at the altar sits a famous
Buddha image in the subduing mara posture called Phra Phra Buddha Norasee Trilokachet,
dating from the reign of Rama I. Around it sit 15 Buddha images from the same period, and also
a pair of ebony elephant tusks. There is also a statue of King Taksin, which predates the Chakri
Dynasty. In front of the compound sit two chedis in the Jom Hae style, with wide base and sharp
top.
Opening Hours: 06:00 - 18:00
Location: Chakrapong Road, near Khao San Road, Banglamphu

SOI RAMBUTTRI NEAR KHAO SAN ROAD
Rambuttri is Khao San's more attractive, well behaved brother. The entire horse-shoe-shaped road takes
around 30 minutes to walk along. This street has a great mix of guesthouses, restaurants, bars and
street food stalls. Most of the shops are similar to those you find anywhere in the area selling the usual
T-shirts, DVDs and other tourist trinkets. The road curves around Wat Chana Songkhram and as you walk
along, the golden roof of the temple pops up above a hotel and you can sneak a peek at the monk's
quarters down the alleyways. If you follow the road all the way round you will end up at what looks like
a dead end. Never fear, you can cut through the second floor of the restaurant at the end, the waiters
are very happy to show you the way.
EAT AND DRINK
1. Bombay Blues
This pretty Indian restaurant is tucked along Soi Rambuttri towards Chao Fah Road, and is a
favourite with locals and visitors. Take off your shoes and relax back in their sumptuous
cushions, this place is all about deep-red velvet and silk. There is a great choice on the menu
with amazing mutton curries, and homemade rotis and naan bread and if youre not hungry sit
outside on the terrace enjoying a jug of beer and a shisha pipe. On Saturdays BB plays host to
local Indians who are more than happy to teach you some Bollywood dancing steps. BB is a
great value place for a romantic date or a low-key supper.

Great cocktails and yummy Northern Thai food are served at this jungle restaurant. Try the
house cocktail named after the place: a twist on a mojito with Thai-style liquor, lie back in your
wicker chair surrounded by greenery and listen to the gentle hum of the street. Northern-style
sausage and deep-fried dried pork make great beer snacks and the specials board is displayed
on a vintage rickshaw outside. Whether you are alone, in a pair or even part of a group this bar
and restaurant offers perfect respite from busy Rambuttri.

Cod! With brightly coloured tables, tiled walls and a shiny deep-fat fryer and a menu that covers
all possible British craving, at the weekend local expats flock here to get a taste of home: Black
Pudding, real mash, mushy peas. Their great hangover special is a full English breakfast with
enough coffee to get you up and running again. I am not so sure many people will be missing
deep-fried Mars bars, but you never know. The TV inside shows re-runs of Brit classics like
Fawlty Towers and Mr Bean.

appetizing looking seafood try the red snapper if available. This place gets busy from 18:00 and
only has a few tables and chairs on the pavement in front. Be prepared to wait this family run
joint is totally worth it.

Situated at the heart of old Rattanakosin city, Sanam Luang (the Royal Field) has been in
existence since the founding of Bangkok (around 200 years ago). The area was also known as

old city walls.

National Museum, National Gallery, the Supreme Court, and Ministry of Defense, Sanam Luang

1. Arun Residence
The best place to witness the sun disappearing precisely behind the monument is from the
balcony of 'Arun Residence', a great restaurant located right across the Chao Phraya River. For
this exact reason, the hard to find Arun Residence is now an increasingly popular restaurant and
reserving a table has become necessary. Serving an excellent Thai food, it's the perfect place to
dine with friends on a trip to Bangkok, or even for a romantic tete a tete. The restaurant is quite
narrow but there is plenty of space over the three floors and wooden terrace. Unfortunately, a
large boat often parks in front and although it doesn't really obstruct the view, it doesn't looks
very good in a photo

Pratunam Wholesale Market is filled with shops and tiny stalls flowing over to the sidewalks and
extending all the way to Baiyoke Towers I and Baiyoke Towers II on Ratchaprarop Soi 3.
Pratunam Market and wholesalers who come to get their supplies targets lower- to lower-
middle income buyers, and as with other outdoor markets in Bangkok, price reflects quality.
Shops offer wholesale prices when you buy three pieces or more, although buying single pieces
wont cost you that much more. On top of that, bargaining is acceptable, though you barely
need to items are already very cheap. Some rules of thumb: No exchange, no trying on and no
refund. When you see brand-name items, expect, at best, copies. The market itself is open 24
hours, but the dynamic is different throughout the day. Retail shops open at about 10:00 until
21:00, but again this may vary. For visitors and shoppers, the best time to go is between 11:00
and 20:00.
Open: 24 hours (retail shops open from 10:00 - 21:00)
Location: Intersection of Ratchaprop and Petchburi roads to Ratchaprarop Soi 3
Shibuya 19 Shopping Mall
Shibuya 19 Shopping Mall in Bangkok is a six storey complex selling fashionable clothes for
ladies and gents at discount prices. The stalls in Shibuya 19 are loosely arranged around themes

but Shibuya 19 feels less hectic and makes for a more relaxed shopping experience.

MBK SHOPPING CENTER
The bargain prices of many of these items mean that merchandise is often copy products or from
questionable origin. And, just like the markets, all prices are negotiable; MBK is probably the only
mall in Bangkok where you can put your bartering skills to the test. You'll be surprised how much a
big smile can knock of the original asking price. If you're shopping wholesale, prices get even more
competitive.

high-end boutiques. Thailands largest Forever 21 is right next to the entrance with other
international brands including Steve Madden shoes, Nike, Accessorize, Havianas, SuperDry and
Levis. If you are looking for great value Thai labels then check out Jaspal for chic outfits, Lyn

with a bit more cash to splash it is worth checking out Fly Now III, Kloset and Greyhound Original
for fantastic Thai designs. These can be found on the 3rd floor, alongside other local designer
flagship boutiques. The 3rd floor is also where to find the up-and-coming Thai designers. On the
top floor you will find the bulk of Siam Centers eateries, including the airy food court. With a high

Japanese as well some independents that have made their mark on Bangkok like the fabulously
childlike Mr Joness Orphanage serving delicious cakes, Bon Chon Chicken, the double cooked
Korean chicken restaurant, and SomTamNua: the gods of Thailands famous spicy papaya salad.

SIAM SQUARE BANGKOK
Siam Square, like the city in which it is located, is an area of contrast. In essence it is the hub of all
things cool, an individual expression point where styles are both shaped and surface (and
resurface). Siam also holds claim to being the most expensive place to rent land in Bangkok. It is to
the City of Angels, what Bond Street is to London and Fifth Avenue to New York, while still
possessing the innovative atmosphere of Camden Town or Soho, NYC.
WHERE TO EAT IN SIAM SQUARE
o Baan Khun Mae
Ban Khun Mae is a great place to visit if you are trying famous Thai dishes for the first time
as the chef flavours dishes to suit stereotypical Western tastes and nothing is
overpowered with spice.
Location: 458/6-9 Siam Square Soi 8, Rama 1 Rd, Patumwan
Tel: (+662)250-1952-3
o Som Tam Nua
Som Tam Nua on Siam Square Soi 5 is a casual and trendy dining spot that has risen to
fame serving up tasty, foreigner-friendly papaya salad and other Issan-region dishes.
Hidden deep down on one of the alleyways leading away from Siam BTS station, the
search for Som Tam Nua is a fun prelude to a tasty meal, and, at times, the queues of
locals trailing out the door testify to its reputation. Located in Siam Square, the main
fashion hub of the city, there are a whole range of fashion stalls and interesting shops
surrounding the restaurant
Opening Hours: 10:45 a.m.-21.30 p.m.
Location: 392/14 Siam Square Soi 5, Rama 1 Road, Bangkok
Tel: +66 (0) 22 51 4880
o Doo Dee Siam Restaurant
If you stop at Doo Dee Siam for the first time and think this is a restaurant for teens, you
would be right. This is the place for a proper local experience, a simple place where young
groups come and eat at great prices. Located just behind the old classic Lido Cinema on
the second floor of a rather run down shopping gallery, this colorful restaurant serves a lot
of Vietnamese and Thai dishes including classic Phad Thai, Som Tum and fried rice, but the
most interesting is their variety of spicy noodle soups. If you have a craving for hot stuff,
the well illustrated menu comes with something unusual: each dish is 'Spice Rated', from
0.5 which is what you would call 'pretty spicy' to a level 3 which is what locals would call
'seriously spicy'. Broth is dark and has an intense flavour, using more lime juice than
average, creating the signature taste of Doo Dee Siam restaurant. Doo Dee Siam is a fun
place in the back of a cinema but might not be for everyone, it's fun to go and do as the
locals do.
o Rot Dee Det Restaurant
Rod Dee Det is not a fancy restaurant with nice cutlery and air con... its is a
neighbourhood joint, somewhere locals and those who know would describe as the best
spot in Siam Square for a bowl or two of excellent noodle soups, usually beef with the
usual choice of thin, medium or large flat rice noodles. The soup itself is so dark and rich
that when walking around the shop you can already smell its delicious flavour metres
away. A bowl costs between 40 to 60 baht but servings are not that big so you might want
to order two bowls right from the start if you feel hungry. Rod Dee Det also serves chicken
stew with rice (khao-nah-kai) and a Chinese style stew with rice (sa-tu-nuea). At lunch
time the place is always full but the waiting time is not long, staff are very efficient and
you'll be back to shopping in no time.
Opening Hours: Lunch and dinner
Location: 420-420/1 Siam Square Soi 7
o Siam Square Food Court
Siam Square Food Courts are rather well hidden if you are not familiar with the intricate
maze of lanes in this area. The smallest of them is located below the now famous Scala
Cinema, quite close to MBK shopping mall, and the biggest it at the exact opposite end of
Siam Square. The concept of food courts is simple and extremely popular in Thailand and
South East Asia, but totally unknown in western countries. A long line of tiny stalls serve a
wide array of Thai precooked food that would be endless to list here. You just walk along
until you spot something you like and just order a plate of it, often mixing more than one
dish on the same plate. Pick up fork, knife or chopsticks and whatever condiment you
need, then walk to any available table. Plates usually cost around 40 baht. It's a bit like a
self service but instead of being run by one single shop, each stall is independent. Once
done with your meal, just leave everything on the table and walk away. It's not shiny and
doesn't look very appealing by our standards, but it's fast, cheap and usually quite good, a
fun way to taste real Thai life!
FIVE GREAT STORES IN SIAM SQUARE
Pony Stone

This smart shop with the tag line Theres no forever is the perfect place to unleash your
inner rock goddess with its leather, chains, platform heels and gold hot pants. Pony
Stones cutting edge collections regularly feature in Thailands fashion pages and on the
backs of celebrities, so make sure to bring a credit card, as items here are on the pricey
end of the cost spectrum. Their latest collection features a studded tiara and a beautiful
red biker chick jacket, making this funky shop ideal for those days when you want to give
the rest of the world a run for their money.
Location: Siam Square Soi 2
Post-Nerd
If you are looking for great T-shirts with unusual designs Post-Nerd is the place to come.
Taking their inspiration from classic bands such as the Stones and the Beatles, as well as
unusual animals and funky patterns, there is enough choice for every man and woman to
find something that reflects their personality and style. The range now includes some
embroidered polo shirts, casual dresses and the cutest 100% cotton tees for kids. Prices
vary depending on the complexity of the design, with a printed version costing around 350
baht.
Location: Siam Square Soi 5
Rotsaniyom
Hidden behind a wrought-iron gate that makes you feel you are entering an English
country garden this boutique whose name means taste in Thai offers a step back in time,
their collection is a vintage dream, with lace and cream featuring heavily in their
collections. If you cant stretch to a detailed full-length dress, check out the exquisitely
designed t-shirts which were the starting point of the brand. The quality is fantastic, the
designs unusual and prices arent too eye-watering; a pair of shoes costs around 1,500
baht and a Chantilly lace top around 3,500 baht.
Location: Siam Sqaure Soi 4
Sister Margarita
This honey-coloured store with its welcoming wooden interior stands out from the row of
same-same shops along Soi 5. As well as importing some beautiful leather bags from
Korea, Sister Margarita has a quirky collection of clothes, and the theme varies from urban
chic to Mad Men, this shop caters for the fashion daring, with Wizard of Oz inspired Mary-
Janes and neon skater dresses. The prices are reasonable with a floral bra top costing
around 700 baht and a sixties style aquamarine jumpsuit for just under 900 baht.
Location: Siam Square Soi 5
Sleeping Pills
No girl can sleep without pretty clothes in her wardrobe, and Sleeping Pills is just the place
to pick up a collection that will give you a good nights sleep. Using quality material and
great cuts, this feminine fashion brand put their own twist on current trends, and releases
a limited number of each item, making sure that if you buy something here youre unlikely
to catch someone else in the same piece. Sailor dresses with a modern twist, pastel
peplum skirts, woodland animal accessories and glitter-capped pumps make up the
eclectic collection with accessories at under 1,000 baht and dresses around 2,500 baht.
Location: left hand side of Lido Theatre

SILOM BANGKOK
The area is easily accessible by either BTS (Sala Daeng) or MRT (Silom), and it's just as easy to explore
the rest of the city with Silom as a base. From the BTS terminus at Saphan Taksin it's easy to catch a river
taxi or river tour to visit Bangkok's historical attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Arun along the
river. Taxis and tuk-tuks are also in good supply, but it's best to stick with the BTS or MRT, especially
during rush hours.

Patpong Night Market

How to get there: Coming from BTS Siam station, depart at Sala Daeng station and exit down

SUKHUMVIT BANGKOK
The longest road in Thailand, both it and its many adjoining 'sois' (sub-streets) are poor on traditional
tourist attractions but rich in of-the-minute shopping, eating and nightlife. The many fashionable
restaurants, bars, air-conditioned malls, luxury hotels and hip clubs give the area a distinctly modern,
cosmopolitan flavour.
Some of the city's most sinful spots, red-light districts Nana Plaza(Soi 4) and Soi Cowboy (off Soi 23) are
also found here. And little, stress-busting pockets of calm can be found in the sweet cafes, atmospheric
restaurants and lush day spas that hide down many of its sois. Making exploring its staggering length
incredibly easy is the Skytrain (BTS) that runs through most of its downtown stretch.
Its staggering length and complex networks of interconnecting sois (lanes), means Sukhumvit can be
daunting. Of course it's good to be intrepid, but rather than just heading out without a plan, having
some idea of where you'd like to go and how is advisable.
Taxis, motorbike taxis, tuk-tuks or buses will all happily ferry you around, traffic permitting. However,
undoubtedly the best way to tackle Sukhumvit is by Skytrain (BTS). The Sukhumvit line operates all the
way from the start of Sukhumvit to On Nut (Sukhumvit Soi 79), and gliding high above the gridlock will
save you a lot of time and energy. The Sukhumvit Underground (MRT) station intersects with the
Skytrain at Asok, providing the perfect means to explore other areas.

PHUKET
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand. At 540 km sq, it's about the same size as Singapore. Just over an
hour's fight from Bangkok or Singapore, and with daily connections to most major Asian airports, Phuket
is ideally situated for a short break or a relaxing vacation.
Business Hours - generally 9am to 5pm, weekdays, and 9am to 12 noon on Saturdays, except Public
Holidays when hours may vary. Shops and local stores open from 10 or 11am to 10pm, daily.
Banking hours - Monday to Friday 8.30am to 3.30pm. Some branches, including those located in
shopping centres, are open as late as 7-8pm and on Saturdays. Currency exchange booths are usually
open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Twenty-four-hour ATMs are widely available, and most accept cards
using international banking networks such as Cirrus or Plus
Getting Around in Phuket is easy. Most of the beach resorts are small enough to walk around and most
hotels are located close to the beach, restaurants and shopping areas. If you'd rather not walk, or if your
hotel is not on one of the main beaches, your hotel can arrange for a taxi or tuk tuk.
If you want to go exploring the island on your own, there are plenty of places to hire cars (see below) or
you can take the local bus. There are two types of buses - the Songtaew - blue open-air buses that run
between Phuket Town and the main resorts, and air-conditioned "micro" buses that service the Phuket
Town area.
PHUKET AIRPORT
GETTING TO YOUR HOTEL
Limousine Taxis
A limousine service is also on hand, albeit a more expensive option (you can buy tickets for this service
on the first floor of the terminal). The silver-grey vehicles are parked en masse directly opposite the
terminal's main doors.
They have a reputation for driving very fast as the quicker they go the more fares they can make in one
day. If your knuckles are white after the first few kilometers gently say, 'Cha cha, khrap' - which means
'go slow please'.
Taxi Meter
A well-signed taxi stand is located just outside, to the right of the main building. The taxis are red and
yellow and are supposed to use their meters but you will probably have to insist that the driver turns his
meter on instead of bargaining and haggling for a price.
The average fares from the airport are Phuket 400 baht, Patong 550 baht, Kata/Karon 650 baht. NB This
charge is for the taxi, not per head. Please note that you will have to pay a fee of 100 baht on top of the
taxi-meter fare. The trip will usually take approximately 30 minutes to Phuket, 40 minutes to Patong
Beach, and around one hour to Kata Beach and Karon Beach.
Bus Transfers
There is an hourly and inexpensive bus service to Phuket Town from 06:30 to 21:30 but none to the west
coast. You can buy tickets (70 baht) at a counter on the ground floor and the grey-red-and-black buses
marked AIRPORT BUS are to be found outside in the parking lot. This is not a non-stop, express service:
buses halt along the way for passengers to embark/disembark. Minivans
Tickets for minivans are for sale at two counters on the ground floor (Phuket 100 baht, Patong 150 baht,
Kata/Karon 180 baht). Minivans sometimes stop off at tour agencies where you will be asked to book a
tour from which the driver makes a commission. Minivans take longer than a taxi to deliver you to your
hotel as they drop off other passengers at hotels along the way.

MEETING POINT

Going to Phuket by Bus or Driving
You can travel to Phuket from Bangkok by bus - a trip that takes about 14 hours. Daily services leave
from the Southern Bus Terminal in Thonburi, with many private services available from almost any travel
agent or hotel tour desk in the city.
For information on bus timetables contact the Southern Bus Terminal on Boromratchchonnani Rd,
Bangkok, Tel: (02) 435-1200, 434-7192. Most services will bring you directly to the Phuket Bus Terminal
in Phuket Town, from where you can take a taxi, tuk tuk or local bus to most beaches on the island.
If you prefer to drive yourself, there are many car hire firms in Bangkok, including international rental
companies such as Hertz, Budget and Avis, which offer full insurance and advice on your routing. The
road system is good and well sign-posted, but great care needs to be taken when driving in Thailand.
Rules are often ignored!
Please note: An International Driving Licence is required for full insurance cover
There is no direct train link to Phuket. Trains go to from Hualomphong Station in Bangkok to Surathani.
From there you catch a bus to Phuket.
Most tour companies can issue tickets which include the bus transfer from Surat. The train journey takes
about 12 hours from Bangkok with another 4 hours from Surat to Phuket by road.

Trains have different classes which range in price, according to whether the seats are in a compartment
and/or whether it's air-conditioned or fan.
For train schedules contact the State Railway of Thailand Tel: (02) 220 4334. Advance tickets are
available at all main stations or the Bangkok Advance Booking Office. Tel. (02) 225-0300 ext 5200-3.
PHUKET TOWN ATTRACTIONS
OLD PHUKET TOWN
Unlike many Thai provincial capitals, Phuket Town fairly shines with personality and nowhere more so
than its Old Town. In this historically rich part of town you will find shrines, temples (Buddhist and
Chinese), ornate and beautifully preserved 'shophouses', quaint cafs, tiny printing shops, impromptu
private and public museums and even a mini ex-red light district.
Phuket Old Town was built on riches reaped from Phuket's tin boom of last century, when the metal was
an extremely valuable commodity. In this quarter of the town you will see grandiose Sino-colonial
mansions, once occupied by Phuket's tin barons of 100 years' ago. Phuket Old Town is compact enough
to stroll around in. The best time to do this is early in the morning or after the day has lost its heat.
There are enough restaurants and cafs to provide you with refreshments so don't bother taking a picnic
along!
NAI HARN BEACH ATTRACTIONS
From Patong Beach: Located in the south of the island, Nai Harn is a 20 minute drive.
Take the beach road through Karon and Kata and turn right at the Kata Beach Resort. Pass
the Boathouse Wine & Grill then take a sharp turn left up the hill.
Pursue this road for five kilometres down into Nai Harn Village and follow the signs to the beach. There
is a large parking lot next to the Buddhist temple and shaded parking on the beach side of the templ
Sunbeds line the entire length of Nai Harn Beach. Sunbed vendors rent a set of two sunbeds, a table and
an umbrella for 200 baht per day.
There are public toilets at the north end by the shops and the centrally located beach restaurants will
usually allow you to use theirs for a small charge
KAMALA BEACH ATTRACTIONS

Head north out of Patong Beach on the beach road and pass through Kalim, or
alternatively head due south out of Surin Beach.

THE BEACH OF KARON
In the Northeast monsoon season (November to April) there are very few waves and the water becomes
crystal clear. In the Southwest monsoon season (May to October) there can be a very dangerous heavy
swell. Pay attention to the red warning flags when they're flying and don't go into the water.
Karon is three kilometres south of Patong, directly north of Kata Beach. Take the hill road out of Patong,
pass Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort and you will soon see the lengthy sweep of this five-kilometre
long beach.
KATA BEACH ATTRACTIONS
Located south of Patong Beach, to get to Kata Beach drive past Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort and
down into Karon Beach.
Go straight at the traffic circle along the beach road and once in Kata centre, take the first right down to
the beach.
THE BEACH OF PATONG
The northern part of Patong Beach, where the Novotel Phuket Resort is located, hides a beautiful small
sandy creek where water is very shallow and clear during high season. Several beach chairs are
available.
The southern part, near the bridge leading to Amari Coral Beach Resort is the mouth of a river where
several fishing boats anchor. The other side of the bridge leads to a small fisherman village.

PHANG NGA BAY
A distinctive feature of Phang Nga Bay are the sheer limestone karsts that jut vertically out of the
emerald-green water. James Bond Island and Koh Panyee are just two of the more famous spots in this
bay. By far the best means of enjoying the spectacular scenery, with only brief encounters with the
tourist crowds at James Bond and Koh Panyee, is to take one of the boat trips from the northern end of
Phuket.
A leisurely day trip cruising through the dramatic limestone islands, occasionally stopping to enjoy quiet
beaches, is far more rewarding than the standard bus-boat tour.
It's possible to see many of the bay's attractions in a single day. A launch from any point along the east
coast of Phuket will take you immediately into Phang Nga Bay.
There are also a number of launching sites on the Phang Nga province mainland, including the Ka Sohm
Pier in Takua Thung district just south of Phang Nga Town. Most visit the area by booking a long-tail or
speedboat day trip, joining a cruise or canoeing tour, or chartering a yacht.
JAMES BOND ISLAND IN PHANG NGA BAY
Opening Hours: All year round
Location: Phang Nga Bay. Visitors can visit James Bond Island via trips from Phuket and Phang Nga. Most
of the islands are uninhabited. Many of them have spectacular caves which you can only reach by an
inflatable kayak.
Koh Hong is one of the most popular of these islands. Khao Khien near Koh Panyee is worth sailing past
to see the ancient paintings of boats and animals on the rock walls.
One of the few inhabited islands, Koh Maak, sits near the top of the bay and is home to a small
community of fisherfolk who maintain a traditional way of life - it's not part of any tour itinerary and it is
recommended to bring your own food and supplies if visiting since there are no facilities for tourists.
There are also no places to stay here.
PHI PHI ISLANDS
Phi Phi Island is Thailand's island-superstar. It's been in the movies. It's the topic of conversation for
travelers all over Thailand. For some, it's the only reason to touchdown in Phuket. Even with all the
hype, it doesn't disappoint. Phi Phi's beauty is a large chunk of the allure. The islands, when approached
by boat, rise from the sea like a fortress. Sheer cliffs tower overhead, then give way to beach-fronted
jungle. It's love at first sight.
The second part of the why-we-love-this-place story is attitude: few places on the planet are this laid-
back. Of the two islands, one is completely free of human inhabitants (Phi Phi Leh), and the other is
without roads (Phi Phi Don). There's no schedule, no hustle-and-bustle, no reason to be in a hurr
Phi Phi consists of six small islands 46km south of Phuket. Fine sandy beaches give way to soaring
limestone cliffs to form spectacular scenery. Add crystal clear water, a refreshing lack of roads, plus a
laid-back lifestyle, and it's easy to see why Phi Phi is one of southern Thailand's most popular
destinations.
The smaller, uninhabited island of Phi Phi Leh is a big tourist attraction. Surrounded by sheer limestone
walls dotted with caves and passages the island's shallow blue-green lagoons and coral gardens are a
snorkelers paradise. The island also has two magnificent beaches, Loh Samah and Maya Bay used as a
location for the Hollywood film The Beach.
Longtail boats make the many secluded beaches around Phi Phi Don accessible. Diving and snorkeling
at Laem Thong and Hua Rah Ket is excellent. Many dive companies offer all-inclusive trips.
Koh Yung Island (Mosquito Island)
North of Phi Phi Don, Koh Yung has some well preserved offshore coral gardens that make for great
snorkeling. The island gets it's name from the black clouds of mosquitoes at sunset.
Koh Phai Nok Island (Bamboo Island)
A tiny 700-metre island surrounded by coral reef. Located just east of Koh Yung. Small beaches on the
north and east coasts; coral gardens to the south.
Koh Bida Nai and Koh Bida Nok
Small islands visited mainly by divers for their underwater scenery. Koh Bida Nok is very good for both
advanced and beginners with both shallow and deep dive sites.
PHI PHI BUDGET TOUR BY SPEEDBOAT
This Phi Phi tour may be cheap but it departs from one of the classiest marinas in Phuket: Royal Phuket
Marina. After an itinerary brief filled with humour, we walk through luxury yacht berths to reach our
speedboat which, with its three 250hp engines, will take us to Phi Phi Islands in record time. After a
45mn cruise at high speed, we reach Koh Phi Phi Don and its largest harbour: Tonsai Bay. Our boat gets
close to the tall limestone cliffs for the first activity of the day: feeding bananas to the macaque
monkeys who live on the cliff (beware, they bite!).
After this, we move a few hundred metres away in the bay for a 30mn session of snorkelling in the
emerald water observing fish, corals and other marine life. Our next stop is for lunch at Carpe Diem, a
restaurant/nightlife joint located in the eastern part of Tonsai Bay. The food prepared here is far from
fine dining, but is tasty and served in enough quantity to satisfy the hungriest of us. After this 45mn
break, we head off to discover Koh Phi Phi Leh, the second island by size of the Phi Phi mini-archipelago
(which is made up of six islands).
It takes only five minutes by speedboat to reach Koh Phi Phi Leh which lies some 5km from Tonsai Bay.
The speedboat cruises along the east coast of the uninhabited island for a sightseeing tour featuring
Viking Cave, Pi Leh Bay, and Loh Sama Bay, before to reach Maya Bay The Beach movie with
Leonardo DiCaprio was shot there and this is where we stop for 30mn which is spent swimming,
sunbathing and exploring by walking to the back side of the bay where a staircase with a viewpoint to
Loh Sama has been set up. The place is pretty busy but its still worth a visit.
After Maya Bay, our next destination is Koh Kai Nai, the largest of the three Kai islands (Koh Kai Nok and
Koh Kai Nui are the two others), located some 15mn off Phukets east coast. The island has changed a
lot in the recent years: first, its shape is never the same due to its geological particularity its limestone
rocks are gradually sculpted by the sea and wind, and the beach itself moves around the island
according the seasons and sea currents; second, the central part of the island is now mostly covered by
bamboo-and-thatch bars, restaurants, shops, and a dive centre.
We stay at Koh Kai Yai for two hours: you can rent an umbrella with two long-chairs for 150 baht, or
indulge yourself with a drink (waiters come to you with a drinks menu on which you will find cocktails,
mocktails and other beverages and snacks). Here, jet-skis (1,000 baht for 15mn) and banana boats are
for the sporty types, or you can enjoy splendid snorkelling, as some 30m off the beach, beautiful corals
and marine life wait to be explored. Just beware of those nasty sea urchins that cover the bottom of the
sea in some places.
Summing up, this Phi Phi bargain tour by speedboat is a great way to discover some of the wonders of
the Andaman Sea, and with sympathetic tour-guides and boat crew, excellent service, nothing is cheap
on this tour except its price.

MAYA BAY

The Beach by Alex Garland is about young travellers who drop out of society and go to live in a hidden
lagoon in Southern Thailand.
Fox bought the rights to the book, signed up Leonardo DiCaprio to play the lead role and then searched
for a location. Maya Bay was perfect. Fox decided that the perfect beach needed some palm trees and
less vegetation so they rearranged the beach to fit a Hollywood stereotype.
Beforehand, environmentalists said removing vegetation would increase the risk of sand erosion and
that the delicate natural ecosystem may not ever recover. The vegetation was replanted after filming
had finished and additional bamboo fences were put in place to support the dunes.
The following year during high tides and a strong storm the dune collapsed, the sand flowed down the
beach and killed coral in the sea below. Fox went to great lengths to leave Maya Bay as they found it
however the debate still goes on whether the damage was due to the rearranging or not, many say that
the replanted vegetation had not yet 'taken'.
Filming commenced in 1999 and 'The Beach' was one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2000. The
film is cited by many tourists as the inspiration for their trip to Thailand.
From Phi Phi Don you can rent a longtail for 1,000 baht (US$ 32) for three hours or for 2,000 baht (US$
64) for a full day, max four people. Speedboats are 3,500 baht (US$ 110) for half day or 6,000 baht (US$
190) for a full day, maximum six people.
There are also many different kinds of boat tours that take in Maya Bay combined with other sites.
Various kinds of boats are used, such as longtails, speedboats and ferry boats. Tours are generally priced
at around 500-1,000 baht (US$ 16-32), depending on the type of boat used and the duration of the
tour.
From Phuket and Krabi tours depart daily, mainly by speedboat.
