1. If the strike is already prepared locate the horizontal center line of the handle
shaft on the strike using the provided strike template. Transfer this line to the
edge of the door on both sides of the door.
2. If the strike is not already prepared on the frame draw a horizontal center line
on both sides of the door and on the edge of the door at the desired height of
the door handle. Finish by transferring this center line to the frame where the
strike will be located.
3. Draw a vertical center line at a dimension back from the edge of the door
determined by the backset of the lock to be installed (on both door faces).
Be sure to intersect the horizontal center line
4 Using the horizontal and vertical center lines align the template on the door
and mark locations A-F (center punch is recommended)
5. Drill holes A-F in the following order (when using hand held tools only drill
through holes half way through the door. Finish the through holes by drilling
the other half of the hole from the opposite side of the door)
1. B & C (C hole is only required for retrofts using a Onity mortise
manufactured before 2007)
2. D
3. A (inside of door only)
4. E
5. F
6. Mortise door edge for lock case using mortise preparation template
7. Using VIX type pilot bit drill 1/8 (3.175 mm) diameter pilot holes for the lock
case attachment screws (12 mm) deep.
8. Door strike preparation. Draw the vertical center line of the door on the door
frame. Be sure to account for the efect of paint, weather striping, etc, that can
change where the center line of the door will be on the frame. Using the
dimension shown on the strike template locate and mark the horizontal center
line of the handle shaft on the strike. Align the strike in the vertical direction
as shown on template while being sure the mounting holes are centered on
the vertical center line. In this position scribe the outline of the strike and
mortise the frame to a depth of 3/32 (2.38mm). Be sure to also mark the latch
and dead bolt openings or the strike box insert if required.
Mortise the frame to a depth of 1 (25.4 mm) to accommodate the latch and
dead bolt or the strike box
Note: Above instructions are for a standard ANSI 4 7/8 strike. If another strike is being
used refer to the center line of strike reference on the strike preparation drawing to fnd
the proper vertical location of the strike to the horizontal handle center line.
