Lodwar, Kenya East Africa Compuserve # 73671,2330 Turkana Tribesman Greg, Debbie, Dan, and Hannah CHRISTIANMISSIONARY FELLOWSHIP Prayer Newsletter THANKYOU First, let us give you all a great bigTHANK YOU. What a response to our appeal for increased support! Debbie and I can't thank you enough. We were desperate; and so many of you responded just in time to meet our need. God supplied ~ through all of you ~ exactly what we needed, which was actually more than we asked for; but since the financial climate in Kenya has continued to decline, we now have just enough for the current situation. Thanks again! MINISTRY Praise the Lord! The fifteen leaders I worked with last term are really stretching as they growin experience to lead their churches, and as they've begun to train a new bunch of leaders. The learningcurve seems to be goingdownwith this newgroup as they've already started churches and are leading in them. I believe it's going so much quicker this time because the old leaders are doing most of the teaching instead of me. The leaders have also done most of the teaching at several Large Area Riverbed Courses where a total of 228 people have been baptized! As I write this they are, for the first time, conducting a Large Area Women's Course, on their own. I can't wait to see howit went! For a look at the explosive growth this last year, see the table on page two. I have to mention, group of mountain Debbie with closeJriendEchuka andtwo i people when her ^ their animals up ^ ^ drought. Echuka's ^ son Lourien, who is ^ one of my new leaders, participates our program to teach Debbie's Wednesday morning Bible study adults to read and with guest speaker Barbara Cook. write Turkana. When Echuka called those people to worship, she had himwrite down a list of the people who came each time! You can't imagine howexciting this is to us. Workcrewthat built the Mordens' newhouse, including ace builders TimandMichael Tudorfrom Indianapolis. "Okay, guys, enough dilly-dallying around. Back to work!" Another important aspect to our ministry the last few months has been preparingfor and helping a new missionary family Gene and MelbaMorden and daughters Samantha andTammy get settled into life in Kenya. They live ten kilometers from us, which is a biganswer to prayer. We lookforward to regular fellowship with them; and, after a year of language and culture learning, helpwith ministry in thisvalley. Gene is also an expert at farming (including irrigation) in hot, dry, and sandyplaces. (Sound familiar?) We're excited about the possibilities. PRAYER That the leaders will lead out more and more on their own, without waiting for me to initiate things. Satan is trying whatever hecan to take away their motivation. That the women will continue to be excited about their weekly Bible studies, and that they'll really devote themselves to prayer, memorize Scripture and apply it to their lives. For the Mordens to immerse themselves in the Turkana culture and language, and to let themselves be learners again, even babies, among this totallydifferent people. FAMILY This last fall has been the most stressful time we've ever had to live through: Hannah startingboarding m DroppingHannah offat RVA boardingschool. Afterthepicture came the tears. It wasn't just that Hannah was so far away, and we knewshewas homesick, but we also felt that we were on the road constantly going back and forth to Nairobi to seeher. I think if we evenmentioned taking Hannah out of RVA now, she'd put a stop to that. Greg's doing great, too. Wewere a little worried that he'd have a tough timewithout Hannah, but that's not been the case. He's adapted beautifully, playing a lot with our Turkana neighbors and keeping himself busy. He still won't admit that he likes school, but he does verywell! We can't keephim in books; he won an award at the RVAHome Schooling Program for reading the most books that term. What a guy! PRAYER That we can fmd a wayto be with Hannah often, yet still be effective in the ministry. (One possible wayis to make use of AIMsupply flights that regularly goto the other side of Lake Turkana.) Safety in traveling so muchon these hazardous Kenya roads. For Hannah during her performance in "The Sound of Music" on May 5 and 6. Good health and normal energy levels for both Debbie and me.
