Long before retail outlets came to dominate the land-
scape along Blue Mound Road in Waukesha County, it had
a eclectic history that can hardly be matched by the present.
Historian Stephen Hauser gave a glimpse of that history
which includes appearances by Les Paul and Al Capone
during a presentation at the Pauline Haass Public Library
Oct. 21. Hauser is author of Following the Trail a book
which chronicled the history of the road. Hauser previously
gave a presentation at the library on the early history of the
road, and gave a brief summary of how Blue Mound Road
was created.
According to Hauser, Blue Mound Road preceded
Wisconsin becoming a state. The road was constructed as a
military highway in 1839 and extended from Milwaukee to
just west of Madison in a community called Blue Mounds.
Hauser said the road was supposed to have been done ear-
lier, but funding was held up and the roads original route to
the Mississippi River was shortened because funding ran out.
By the time the road was completed, the military no longer
needed the road.
In the 20th Century, Blue Mound Road was paved with
concrete in 1913, the first highway in the state to be paved.
Hauser said Blue Mound Road was a busy road, which is
why it was the first paved. However, the road was repaved
in 1918 to minimize cracking.
The road was also the location of the first drive-in restau-
rant in the state near Goerkes Corners Beekmans, which
served ribs.
Among the people are part of the history of the road is
Les Paul, a Waukesha native who in the summer of 1929 had

PET OF THE WEEK
My name is Reggie - I came from
Milwaukee Animal Control earlier this year -
they thought that I would do better in
Washington County - so here I am. I was
adopted from WCHS in April, and returned
recently because my adopter could no longer have me in his new
home. I am a handsome young Beagle that is good with dogs and
children, but I do not like cats. I must not go to a home with any
feline friends. I am prey driven, so I must not go to a home with
any small animals. Please no condo or apartment for me - I might
be a little guy - but I love to make some noise! I am friendly and
know how to speak. Come in today and ask for me . . . Reggie.

Tip of the Week: WINTER WELLNESS: Has your pet had his/her preventive care exam (wellness exam) yet?
Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions such as arthritis. Your pet should be examined by a
veterinarian at least once a year, and its as good a time as any to get him/her checked out to make sure
(s)he is ready and as healthy as possible for cold weather.

been walking to the WTMJ transmitter
tower along Blue Mound Road from his
Waukesha home. Paul, who was a 14-
year-old at the time, was interested in the
electronics of a radio station operation.
Paul, at the insistence of his mother to
get a job, talked his way into a job at
Beekmans as guitar and harmonica play-
er. After the first week, owner Nona
Beekman said no one could hear Paul.
In other words, it didnt work, but the
young man was not so easily dissuaded,
Hauser said.
Paul responded by going home and
tearing apart a radio and went back the
following week, hotwiring his guitar into
the public address system at the restau-
rant.
He was going to do one of two
things: He was either going to electrocute
himself or he was going to invent the elec-
tric guitar. Well fortunately, he did the lat-
ter, Hauser said.
After Beekmans, Paul played several
speakeasies along the road during prohi-
bition.
Another Blue Mound Road eatery that
gained prominence a few years later: The
Golden Guernsey Milk Jug. Hauser
explained the dairy was a co-op that was
a very popular milk producer in
Waukesha County. Hauser said the busi-
ness was called the Milk Jug because of a
400-foot high stainless steel milk jug at the
site. The business opened in 1936 and
was operated until 1957.
Hauser explained the restaurant was
created by the company to generate pub-
licity, and the restaurant housed a circular
dairy barn where dairy cattle were kept.
Customers at the business could see cows
being milked while eating lunch.
City folk thought it was pretty remark-
able, Hauser said.
Hauser noted that after he included
information on the Milk Jug in his book, he
received a letter from a woman thanking
him for including the reference, as the
woman had been telling her daughter
about the restaurant for years. Thanks to
Hausers book, the woman could now
prove it was true.
Also part of the history of Blue Mound
Road is the Club Madrid, which was locat-
ed at 126th and Blue Mound Road, and
Al Capone, who had a residence nearby.
Hauser said that in the early part of
the 20th Century, Blue Mound Road was
known as a wide open road as the area
was unincorporated. It was not until the
latter half of the 20th Century that New
Berlin, Brookfield and Elm Grove incorpo-
rated as municipalities. As a result, anyone
who wanted to engage in risque enter-
tainment just had to settle west of 124th
Street and the Milwaukee County line.
Once you passed 124th Street, all
things were go, Hauser said.
The Club Madrid was owned by Sam
Pick, who Hauser said knew a lot of gang-
sters.
In his defense, so did Babe Ruth,
Hauser said.
Hauser said the Club Madrid hosted
singing groups who later became famous,
and customers included sport figures,
celebrities, broadcasters and the occa-
sional gangster, including Capone.
Capone, Hauser said, owned a home
nearby on Brookfield. Hauser said
Capones driveway is now known as
Capone Court.
When youre going on Capone Court
youre actually driving on Al Capones
driveway, it was originally the only house
on that original stretch, Hauser said.
Hauser noted that Capone had a flock
of Canada geese as pets who were fed by
Capone. The birds were a burglar alarm
giving Capone notice when revenue col-
lectors were about ready to raid the place.
While the road was wild for the
early half of the last century, there is very
little of it that has stayed around, as many
of the structures were later torn down for
other development.
I cant say anything nice about whats
happened to Blue Mound Road. The col-
orful past that I just reminisced with you for
an hour is all gone, Hauser said. The life
and vibrancy of Blue Mound Road has
been sucked out of it. Its now an interstate
with stores.
The Hamilton Education Foundation will
team up with Sussex Outreach Services
(SOS) to help more than 200 local children
have a better holiday season. Participants
of Charger Challenge: Santa Edition 5K
run-walk, to be held Dec. 6 on the Hamilton
High School grounds, are asked to bring an
unwrapped toy or gift card for the SOS
Christmas Distributions and Adopt-a-Family
programs.
Donations will be collected for children
from infants to older children, including
teenagers who are often overlooked during
toy drives. Among the items suggested are
toys, DVDs, new clothes and gift cards in
increments of $25, including those from
Kohls, Target, Walmart and iTunes. Toys
and gifts will be distributed Dec. 13 at St.
James Church. Clients must sign up at the
food pantry, if interested.
Charger Challenge: Santa Edition not
only benefits SOS, but the run itself is a
fundraiser for the Hamilton Education
Foundation. It is a family-friendly 5k run
and walk with holiday-themed stations
along the route which is open to all athletic
abilities, and families are welcome. After
finishing the race, participants will be able
to tour the new Hamilton Athletic Center,
which is scheduled to be completed at the
end of November. The Sussex Leo Club will
provide games for children 12 years and
younger in the new facility.
Please go to www.hamiltoneducation-
foundation.org <http://www.hamiltonedu-
cationfoundation.org> for more informa-
tion or to register for the event. Fees are
$25 for children ages 4-12 years and $35
for 13 and older. Each paid participant
who registers by Nov. 26 will receive a
long sleeved Dri-FIT shirt and goody bag.

izers at Hefchargerchallenge@yahoo.com.

The Germantown girls cross country
team just missed qualifying for the state
meet as a team Oct. 25, though two mem-
bers of the team did get individual bids.
Germantown finished third at Tendick
Park Homestead sectional with 82 points,
nine points behind Homestead. The top
two teams advance to the state meet.
Alyssa Goesch finished 10th with a time of
20:48 and was followed by Brianna
Klopfer in 12th with a time of 20:52.
Goesch and Klopfer earned individual
bids to the state meet.
On any given day anything can hap-
pen, and unfortunately today wasnt our
day, Germantown girls cross country
Coach Nancy Pietrowiak said afterward.
Goesch will making her second trip as
an individual qualifier to the state meet
while Klopfer qualified this year after miss-
ing out by five seconds last year.
Its really good to see that she finished
strong and made it, Pietrowiak said of
Klopfer.
Behind them were teammates Jennifer
Lindgren in 18th (21:21), Molly Baus in
19th (21:22), and Calli Lemke in 23rd
(21:40). Also running for Germantown
were Lucy Delain in 31st (22:03) and
Kayla Hower in 42nd (22:36).
Were going to look to this meet for
incentive for the whole next season, to
keep us going for summer running, to give
us better competition at practices, to moti-
vate us when we dont feel like running
because its not going to happen again
next year.
Pietrowiak said most of the team is pro-

CORRESPONDENT
Nothing rattled Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. in
his first game of the 2014 postseason. The
Germantown senior quarterback rebound-
ed from an interception on the Warhawks
first possession, completing 16-of-24 passes
for 291 yards and three touchdowns and
carrying his team to a 37-18 win at home
over Brookfield Central, Oct. 24, in the first
round of the Division 2 playoffs.
The Lancers (5-5) took advantage of the
miscue by Germantown (9-1) and scored
first on a 22-yard field goal by senior Buc
Nellen for a 3-0 lead with 7 minutes 42 sec-
onds left in the first quarter.
The Warhawks got a big break from
their special teams unit when Central junior
quarterback and punt returner Dominic
Labellarte dropped the ball, which was
recovered by Germantown junior Aaron
Pokorny. The Warhawks scored four plays
later on a 15-yard run by senior running
back Joe Lemerond with 4:08 left in the
quarter and led 7-3. They got another
touchdown on a 39-yard pass from
Lawhorn to senior receiver Steve Doran with
1:17 left and led after one, 14-3.
Turnovers make the difference,
Germantown coach Jake Davis said. I tell
my kids all the time we cant have them (our-
selves). We got to take it, so it was good for
us.
One mistake by Germantown that yield-
ed minimal damage by Central didnt throw
Lawhorn off his game. After the intercep-
tion, I calmed down and didnt let it get to
my head, he said. I rebounded from it
because you cant take it back. We just had
to move on and do what we do as an
offense. We moved the ball down the field
and got a touchdown.
The Warhawks scored once in the sec-
ond quarter on a 25-yard field goal by sen-
ior Carter Schmitz with 3:53 left in the half
and they led at intermission 17-3.
Junior tight end Connor Edmonds caught
a 23-yard scoring pass from Lawhorn in the
third quarter for the only score between both
teams as Germantown took a 23-3 advan-
tage into the fourth quarter.
The Warhawks and Lancers traded
touchdowns in the last period. Senior
Spencer Pethan scored on a 2-yard run at
the 10:11 mark. Pethan rushed for 79 yards
on 12 carries. Labellarte dived into the end
zone from 1 yard out with 7:59 remaining in
regulation. Lawhorns 57-yard bomb to sen-
ior Kyle Winkler with 5:49 left was matched
almost a minute later on a 70-yard run
down the right side by Labellarte with 4:57
remaining.
Germantown did enough to move on
and face North Shore Conference foe
Cedarburg in the second round, Oct. 31.
We just hope to execute the game plan
and try to get out of it a W, Lawhorn said.

Milwaukee King broke a 13-game play-
off losing streak Oct. 24, as the Generals
defense shut down Menomonee Falls on
the way to a 14-0 Division I playoff upset.
"This is my fifth year as coach as we've
been trying to build toward this finish," King
Coach Tom Wozniak said afterward.
"These guys will never forget this. This is
something that hasn't been done too much
out of a City (Conference) team."
The teams entered halftime scoreless.
King had an opportunity toward the end of
the second quarter as the Generals inter-
cepted a Menomonee Falls pass at the Falls
23 yard line. However, the Falls defense
held after allowing one first down.
King got on the board at the 7:46 mark
of the third quarter, as Keyonte Sherrod
returned an interception to make the score
6-0 after the two-point conversion failed.
The Generals defense then stopped
Menomonee Falls on a fourth down attempt
at the Generals 28 yard line.
Linzy Hudson then scored for King on a
2-yard run with 1:50 remaining, finishing a
drive that started on the King 20 yard line.

Central Oct. 24. Photo by Troy Sparks.
King then converted the two point play.
The Generals then recovered a fumble
on Menomonee Falls next possession to
secure the playoff win.
Afterward, Wozniak noted that his team
entered the game with a 9-0 record. After
the playoff brackets came out the previous
weekend, Wozniak said that his players
came in at the beginning of the week and
asked how the team could be undefeated
and be seeded fifth.
"I've said from day one we're not going
to be respected until we earn it. If we con-
tinue to win like we've been winning, then
we'll earn that respect," Wozniak said.
Menomonee Falls Coach John Baker
praised King as an "outstanding team. They
really managed the ball well tonight, did
everything well. I was very impressed with
them."
Baker also took time to praise the sen-
iors on his team, as "they've been a really
good group leadership wise."

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone left
under my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging pain
when I bite down and my dentures pop out when I
open my mouth even with denture adhesive. What are
my options and how much does this cost?
Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems with
your dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth are
removed you can lose 40% of the remaining bone the
first year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continue
every year until implants are placed to stop bone loss.
This means you can lose height of bone and width of
bone continuously. When you wear dentures the
dentures may appear tight but over time as the bone
resorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is why
dentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 years
to try and maintain a better fit between the denture
acrylic and the bone.
Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during a
normal chewing cycle. That movement coupled with
bone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves that
can cause pain from denture pressure.
Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing your
dentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This is
done by placing implants or mini-implants into the
jaws to support your dentures. How many implants
you receive is often dependant upon your budget. I
have written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistry
which is a concept that allows patients to place
implants before bone loss occurs. They can then
continue to add implants over time as their budgets
allow until they have enough support to have a
permanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants as
soon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bone
grafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-On-
Dentures with a few implants so that the implants can
have attachments that the denture clips to. This
prevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the need
for denture adhesive which can be quite annoying to
clean out each day. If enough implants can be afforded
then a bar can be made to snap the denture on to and
this allows the implants to be splinted and increases
their strength.
If we have 6 implants in the upper arch (or more)
and at least 5 implants in the lower arch then a hybrid
or "fixed" denture can be made for our patients.
If you have lost too much bone according to your
dentist, there may be grafting procedures you can
undergo to add bone for supporting implants. That
can involve using bone from your chin (chin block
grafts), bone from your ramus (the area by your
wisdom teeth), or using hip grafts to re-grow the
bone. Alternatively, ridge spreading or bone
reduction can be undertaken to try and create a
platform that will allow implants to be placed.
We welcome our readers to come in for a no charge
implant consultation or a comprehensive examination
and implant evaluation to see what your options are for
eliminating denture pain. Please see our videos, photos
and articles at www.hamptondentalassociates.com
We look forward to meeting you! Ask about our
internet or Hometown Publication special. Please
note any implant case started before 12/10/14 will be
given a $300 discount if you bring in this article.
Sincerely,
Richard B. Winter D.D.S.

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls boys soccer
team qualified for the state tournament Oct.
25 with a sectional final win over Hamilton
that was decided in a shootout.
Making history is always sweet and
especially at this point. We werent expect-
ed to even come close to this, it just makes
it sweet to prove everybody wrong,
Menomonee Falls midfielder Alex Eastman
said afterward. This is an amazing feeling,
unlike anything else.
This is what weve worked for all
year, Menomonee Falls defender Joe
Burgoyne added. The season is just a
buildup to this moment.
The teams ended regulation in a score-
less tie. Kay Olapo put Menomonee Falls
on the board in the first overtime by head-
ing a cross from Sam Thomann at the 100th
minute.
But Hamilton scored the equalizer at
the 116th minute as Ben Krolczyk finished
off a scramble from a corner kick.
It took all the momentum with that
goal, Burgoyne said of Hamiltons equaliz-
er.
With the score tied 1-1 at the end of
overtime, a shootout settled the matter, with
each team getting five opportunities. Both
teams missed their first chances, but
Menomonee Falls converted their next four,
with the fourth shootout goal coming from
Brandon Dantone. Menomonee Falls goal-
keeper Will Genthe then stopped
Hamiltons final attempt to secure the win.
Menomonee Falls advanced to a
Division I state semifinal against Beloit
Memorial at 7 p.m. Oct. 31. The state tour-
nament will be held at the Uihlein Soccer
Park in Milwaukee.
Afterward, Menomonee Falls Coach
Scott Stein said while Menomonee Falls
played good teams in the postseason, they
werent playing teams they always came
across in past playoffs. He noted that
Menomonee Falls wasnt ranked at the start
of the year and Menomonee Falls was
beat by a ton of teams in a summer
league.
I think it worked to our advantage
mentally, Stein said, noting that
Menomonee Falls didnt play any
Brookfield squad in the postseason.
However, the teams they did play were
very good, as Stein noted that Sheboygan
North was undefeated at the time
Menomonee Falls played them in the sec-
tional semifinal. Also, regional opponent
Neenah had only a few early season loss-
es.
It was a testament to our guys, they just
seemed to battle, Stein said.
He noted that three of Menomonee
Falls losses came to Marquette, Brookfield
East and Cedarburg, who all qualified for
the state tournament.
I think it grew game by game, Stein
said of the season. We came out with con-
fidence.
Stein said his team is a loose and
practices arent as intense in the past.
Theyre gamers. I think each game
they showed up, Stein said.
Stein added that he was proud to see
alumni at the game.
Eastman also recalled the history of the
program, as there were several former play-
ers in attendance at the game. Burgoyne
also thanked Stein and other coaches for
their support.
Its amazing how much they can
believe in us. They got us this far just by
believing in us, Burgoyne said.
Hamilton Coach Steve Provan noted
that Menomonee Falls and Hamilton is a
major rivalry for the schools.
It was a tough match and my guys
played really well, left it all on the field. I
think the second half we controlled a lot of
the game, we just werent able to get the
goal, Provan said.
When asked to look back at the season,
Provan noted this is his third year coaching
Hamilton.
Each year weve taken a step forward
and our goal first and foremost this year
was to win the regional championship,
Provan said. We went a step further and
then to be able to beat Arrowhead in the
sectional semifinal. What this team accom-
plished here and what these guys accom-
plished is something that hasnt been
accomplished at Hamilton High School in a
long time.
Provan added that making it to the sec-
tional final is another steppingstone for the
program.
