LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
NOVEMBER 2014

Giving thanks

November is catered to comfort: cozy blankets, scented candles and hearty meals
meant to touch our souls and bring about pleasant nostalgia. Its easy to envision
the things the season brings, but what about what it brings about in us?
It can be difficult to think of this month without jumping to Thanksgiving
and the sometimes-hectic anticipation surrounding it. Every year, the fourth
Thursday of the month is an excitedly and anxiously awaited celebration with
enough stress to go around.
Amongst the warmth and contentment of the season, where does this oftenaccompanying pressure come from? Hosting the annual event and preparing food
for family and friends? The inevitable aftermath and cleanup? Maybe from the
notion that Thanksgiving opens the gate to the whirlwind that is the winter season.
What the holiday is really about is simple: giving thanks.
In our everyday lives, things become ordinary. This isnt necessarily a negative,
but we tend to take things for granted and forget to appreciate the little things.
Yet in November, we spend the weeks leading up to the big day thinking about
what we are most grateful for.
What if we carried this tradition into our lives year-round? How much richer
would our moments be?
Much, according to Michael Craig Miller, M.D., former editor-in-chief of the
Harvard Mental Health Letter and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School. There are several advantages to feeling and expressing gratitude.
BEING THANKFUL CAN HELP YOU:

Feel more positive emotions. Relish good experiences. Improve health. Deal with
adversity. Build strong relationships.
Being appreciated and recognizing worth in others simply feels good, but really,
being grateful also has clear benefits.
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is
not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy
Natures Pathways feels honored to offer you words providing health and wellness wisdom to live by. Thank you for supporting us and our mission to bring
our community together.
Were grateful for you this Thanksgiving and every season.

hen assisting customers in

navigating the choices available to them and their pets
in natural food choices, these are some
of the regular comments I hear. Many
times, these customers feel overwhelmed,
confused and, sometimes, even angry or
grieved when they begin to learn more
about mass-marketed pet food, and how
it can be more difficult to navigate what is
healthy for our pets now more than ever
before. When it comes to the choices out
there with all their marketing taglines and
the differing opinions from pet care professionals, its no wonder why sometimes we
can feel frustrated.
But as I remind my customers, We all
have to start somewhere. The most frustrating part is figuring out where!
Many think following the natural path
means having to change everything at
once, which often leads most of us to quit
on a goal before we even start. Changing
everything can be daunting, and often can
take funds, time and lots of work. Starting
a more natural lifestyle for our pets can
seem impossible when grabbing food for
our pets at the grocery store is much more
convenient, and skipping a walk here and

there is needed due to busy schedules.

Finding a more natural path for your pet
(and for you!) can be easier than you think.
Just start with one of these, and slowly
work your way through to see if there is a
fit for you and your lifestyle.

Food

Finding a natural, healthy path really

starts with food for both people and
pets. For us, it means eating whole fruits,
veggies and meats; taking the time to
cook meals; and skipping out on the fast
food. Well, this means the same thing for
your dog or cat!
Take a moment to look at the ingredient
panel of your pets food, and really read it.
Weed out harmful and cheap fillers such
as corn, wheat, soy and byproduct meals.
Rotate your pets food to offer different
proteins, ingredients, and vitamins and
minerals so they are not stuck with the
same food day in and day out. Also, look
into different forms of food such as other
kibble, cans and raw food. Many of these
less-processed foods offer great nutritional
benefits for the body, especially the moisture content for kidney health.
Keep an open mind and do what you
www.naturespathways.com

Instead of going for a

box of your traditional
Milk-Bones, swap
it out for a bag of
blueberries or a slice of
real chicken instead.
can! Be careful not to overextend your
time or your funds.

Treats

Many treats have ingredients that are questionable, and of course, many are high
in calories and full of bad fats. Instead of
going for a box of your traditional MilkBones, swap it out for a bag of blueberries
or a slice of real chicken instead. Whole
foods are much healthier for your pet than
some of the processed, mainstream treats
we love to buy.
If you do want to buy the cute treats,
weed out the same ingredients you would
weed out in their foods. There are treats that
are more nutritious than what you find in
the pet aisle at your local grocery store.

Holistic veterinary care

Take time to research veterinarians in your

area and see if you can find a holistic veterinarian. Holistic veterinarians have all the
same tools traditional veterinarians do, but
many are more well-versed in nutrition,
supplements and alternative treatments
because they have continued their education in other avenues of health. You might
think these veterinarians charge more,
but actually their rates are very similar to
your traditional veterinarian, and visiting
one may offer you more options for care. It
cant hurt to take a look!
These are only a few ways to begin your
journey down the natural path. After all,
we all have to start somewhere.

Mens grief
tools

By Robert Matuszak

fter dealing with the primary emotion(s) from last months

article, you will need to incorporate some tools to meander
through the grief forest. Here are some to consider:

Journaling

Journaling allows the recording of events that impacted you that

day. You can measure your progress in healing grief, express feelings and emotions, gain insight into your healing, and discover new
grief tools. Pay particular attention to your feelings and emotions.
Use journaling to say things you have been afraid to say. This is
between you and the journal. It is safe and private.
I highly recommend journaling and found this to be an invaluable tool in my recovery. Purchase a blank journal and write your
experiences, feelings, and ups and downs daily. This is a good
release from the days stress, and the stress of grief.

Other artistic options

You say that you arent a writer or dont like to write. I suggest you
try art: drawing, sketching, painting. You might try sculpture,
woodworking, carpentry or other creative outlets. Music is another
option; expressing grief through playing music, singing, writing
lyrics or other musical expression can be invaluable. The mind and
heart together give expression through their creative arm, especially in healing grief.

Meditation

Here is a beneficial grief tool and also a good life tool that works
as a stress reducer and brings calmness, better focus, and a release
of thoughts and feelings through breathing and mindfulness.
Mindfulness is defined as being present in the moment. Even
a short meditation of a few minutes can bring relief to your grief.
In my experiences with grief, my mind seemed like it would go
in 1,000 directions simultaneously. I couldnt focus on the moment
without having thoughts of this, that and other things racing through
my mind. My mind seemed to go from past to present to future and
back repeatedly. My worry meter went off the scale frequently as
my mind tossed me around in scenarios that only seemed to serve
10

Natures Pathways | November 2014

itself. It wasnt an ally very often during my grieving.

However, my daily meditation gave me respite from the mind
chaos. I was able to get some relief through breathing and meditating, although my mind interjected thoughts related to my grief
or worry of the future. After my wifes death this was a big struggle
for several months. Yet present was where I needed to be, even for
only a few minutes. As I progressed with meditating, the mind
chatter lessened. I am grateful for meditating back then.
There are many books on meditation. This is not a complicated
process. It is simple and forthright. Begin with a five-minute meditation and increase gradually to 15 minutes. This will help with
managing your grief. I encourage you to give it a try.

More suggestions

Daily exercise in some form, from walking to a good workout

with weights and cardio, is a good stress reliever. You may choose
to play some sport like tennis, golf, running or martial arts.
Diet is important in your recovery. Unhealthy choices like fried
foods, sugars, processed foods and red meats are not beneficial.
Eat plenty of veggies and fruits, limit red meats, and drink plenty
of water. Your body is detoxing during this period and water will
help flush out the toxins.
Sleep is helpful too, as you need rest in your recovery.

These may not sound like grief tools but when I was grieving all these
and many more basic life tools became my grief tools. You will find
more grief tools as you progress in your recovery. Choose the ones
that work and put the others aside until you need them.

Boat Pose
The yoga pose
of the month

By Andrea Smessaert

This is a challenging asana that requires

a strong core and balance.

s the daylights starts to wane and the rapid transition from summer to fall begins, we can remain firmly
grounded amidst the shifting natural world by connecting with the earthy energy of our third chakra. Located behind
the navel, the third chakra, known as Manipura Chakra, is the
center of our dynamism, energy, will and achievement, and it is
often compared to the dazzling heat and power of the sun. Poses
like Navasana (both the full Paripurna, meaning full, entire,
complete, and half Ardha versions) build the core strength necessary to boost this chakra.
The solar plexus chakra is not only the key to a healthy self-esteem
and personal empowerment, but on a physical level is also linked
with digestion, immunity, diabetes or hypoglycemia. This chakra is
also very susceptible to highs and lows, creating peaks and valleys in
your energy levels. A balanced third chakra means balanced energy,
healthy immunity, healthy digestion and strong personal power.
On the outset, the Full Boat Pose appears a seemingly basic
position to achieve, as it does not require an excessive amount of
flexibility. In reality, however, the required amount of core stability, strength, postural awareness and endurance is considerable. It
is the link between core stability and strength.

Getting to the core of it

Core stability is the ability of the body to control the trunk or core.
The muscles of the body are either global (movement) or stabilizer (postural) muscles and core stability involves the control
of both the deep stabilizing muscles and more superficial global
muscles. Good core stability is using the right muscles at the right
time and intensity to control the trunk appropriately for the task
at hand. The global muscles are designed to generate a lot of force
for short periods of time and the stabilizer muscles are designed
to work at a low intensity for long periods of time and during any
body movement.
Once you can achieve the Full Boat position, being able to
www.naturespathways.com

maintain this pose for up to a minute requires controlled breathing and muscle endurance. To maintain this position and to
control the breathing requires practice at allowing the diaphragm
to relax and work normally.

Practicing the pose

Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Press your
hands on the floor a little behind your hips, fingers pointing
toward the feet, and strengthen the arms. Lift through the top of
the sternum and lean back slightly. As you do this, make sure your
back doesnt round; continue to lengthen the front of your torso
between the pubis and top sternum. Sit on the tripod of your
two sitting bones and tailbone.
Exhale and bend your knees, then lift your feet off the floor so
that your thighs are angled about 45-50 degrees relative to the
floor. Lengthen your tailbone into the floor and lift your pubis
toward your navel. If possible, slowly straighten your knees,
raising the tips of your toes slightly above the level of your eyes.
If this isnt possible, remain with your knees bent, perhaps lifting
the shins parallel to the floor.
Stretch your arms alongside the legs, parallel to each other and the
floor. Spread the shoulder blades across your back and reach strongly
out through the fingers. If this isnt possible, keep your hands on the
floor beside your hips or hold on to the backs of your thighs.
While the lower belly should be firm, it shouldnt get hard and
thick. Try to keep the lower belly relatively flat. Press the heads of
your thigh bones toward the floor to help anchor the pose and lift the
top sternum. Breathe easily. Tip the chin slightly toward the sternum
so the base of the skull lifts lightly away from the back of the neck.
Congratulations; youve set sail with the Boat Pose.

Michael Helwig, R.D., director of Nutritional Services at Mark Twain Medical

that plant polyphenols help protect our

reduce inflammation, act as an anti-fungal,
raise HDL (the good cholesterol) as well as
prevent blood clots. In time, the destructive free radical molecules that are a part
of chronic diseases could be eliminated.
Polyphenols could also provide benefits for
plasma lipid levels and oxidative damage.

Birth with a
doula is positively
different

By Kamala McCormick

he word doula has been applied to childbirth to refer

to a woman professionally trained and experienced in
childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional
and informational support to the mother before, during and just
after childbirth, according to the book Mothering the Mother.
Certified doulas must adhere to a standard of practice and a code
of ethics established by a professional certifying organization.

A doula understands that childbirth is a uniquely

transformative event.

A doula will prepare you for this wild ride.

Doulas understand that knowledge is power and power is
peace. That peace is whats most needed during childbirth. Many
doulas instruct childbirth classes that not only teach about labor
and birth, but encourage you to open your mind to the importance of the mind, body and spirit connection at birth.
Throughout several meetings during your pregnancy, a doula
will help you explore your vision for your birth. She will provide
evidence-based information and research. You will then have
knowledge of many options available so you are able to make
choices best for you as you plan to turn your birth vision into reality.

A doula will remind you that your body knows

how to give birth.

Remember this, for it is as true as true gets. Your body is not

a lemon. You are not a machine. The creator is not a careless
mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give
birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose and water
buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far,
I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.

Ina May Gaskin

Doulas are labor experts.

During your pregnancy, your doula will teach you relaxation

and pain management methods that will be specific to your individual needs. These techniques will be valuable throughout labor
and you will rely on them as labor progresses and becomes more
intense. When the moment of self-doubt arrives and you say, Ive
changed my mind, I cant do this!, a doula will take your hands,
look into your eyes and simply remind you, Yes, you can; youre
doing it now! Doulas understand how to unleash the power of
positive thinking and affirmation for birthing mothers. They
believe in your perfectly designed body and will empower you to
believe in yourself.

Regardless of how you choose to

have your baby enter the world, a
doula will make your birth better!

The MAP of YOUR LIFE

is IN YOUR HANDS

A doula is familiar with the physiology

of labor...

...sometimes in ways that many birth professionals are not. She

understands that freedom of movement and frequent changes in
position are essential to effective birthing and helping labor progress. She helps you work with gravity.
Have you ever thought of vertical birthing? Your doula will have
you up and moving: walking, squatting, lunging, sitting like a frog,
and on your hands and knees. Youll be rocking your birth! Shell
help you move and shimmy your baby down and out. Dancing
your baby into the world a shorter labor yes! Birth massage,
acupressure, dim lights and music: What a birth day celebration!

A doula teaches autonomy and confidence.

Your body, your baby and your birth we all want to feel ownership
of our birth experiences. Regardless of how you choose to have your
baby enter the world, a doula will make your birth better! Water birth,
vertical birth, birthing stool, cesarean section, vaginal birth after
cesarean, homebirth or hospital birth: A doula is the knowledgeable
and constant presence that will calm you and keep you mindful of
important decisions in the moment. If your plan must change, shell
keep you focused on what you know to be good, right and true. Shell
remind you that a change of plan doesnt mean youve failed.

Doulas are evidence-based practice.

Research shows that women giving birth with the presence of

a doula receive many benefits and positive outcomes, such as
shorter labors, fewer induced labors, fewer epidurals, fewer cesarean deliveries, greater breastfeeding success and greater overall
satisfaction, according to The Doula Book.
Many elderly women who can barely remember the names of
their children will still be able to recall their birth experiences.
The influence of a certified doula is paramount in the process.
The day your baby is born is one day in your life as a woman,
but the experience of giving birth will strengthen and empower
you for the rest of your life. Women in labor need to feel cared for,
supported, listened to and honored. Birth with a doula is positively different!
Kamala McCormick is a birth doula. She is a certified pregnancy
and postpartum fitness educator and Dancing For Birth instructor. Kamala holds certified credentials through DONA International, International Childbirth Education Association and

The perfect
storm

By Patrick McCann, D.C.

hen I was growing up, we had two rules to follow

at all times. The first rule was dont call each other
names; the second was dont do drugs! The rules were
straightforward and simple to follow, and I knew if I broke these
rules there would be consequences.
Today our children are being labeled with all kinds of names:
attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory
processing disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, oppositional
defiant disorder, Aspergers, allergies, depression, etc. What are
the psychological effects of labeling our children? Are we making
our children feel that they are less than others? Broken? Bad?
Unfortunately, too many times these labels lead to our children
being prescribed drugs like Ritalin, Prozac, Concerta, Adderall and Focalin to manage their symptoms. The rates of these
prescriptions have skyrocketed1. The opposite of the two rules
I grew up with are unfortunately considered a normal part of
growing up today. The sad reality today is 1 in 50 kids will be
diagnosed with ASD2, 1 in 10 with asthma3, 1 in 9 with ADD/
ADHD4 and 1 in 5 diagnosed with a mental illness5.
The question we need to ask ourselves is what has changed
with kids over the last few decades? In my opinion, the answer

is stress! Every day, our bodies are constantly bombarded with

physical, chemical and emotional stresses. This stress affects our
bodies ability to function, heal and regulate itself properly due to
dysfunction of the nervous system.
Physical stresses for our children can begin during the birth
process with in-utero constraint, surgical interventions (cesarean
sections, forceps and vacuum deliveries) as well as breech presentation. Even a normal vaginal delivery often involves turning
and twisting of the head and neck, which can cause trauma to the
spine. As we learn to crawl, walk and play, we have hundreds of
traumas affecting our spine and nervous system.

Chemical stress is another component of our childrens health.

A chemical stress is anything we put on or in our body. Examples
are sugar, grains, dairy, vaccines, processed and preservativepacked foods that contain chemicals or genetically modified
organisms, environmental chemicals, household cleaners, hairsprays and deodorants, etc. All of these things can lead to massive
amounts of inflammation in the body.
Emotional stresses can start with a mom who has a stressful,
fearful or difficult pregnancy: deliveries that are stressful, forced
and intervened with. Fast-paced lives, bullying and kids who are
labeled with a disorder have dramatic increases in emotional and
psychological stress, affecting their health.

What is the nervous system and how does it

affect our health?

The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spine. The

nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every
cell, tissue and organ in the body. Think of the nervous system
as the phone company of the body, coordinating the messages
from the brain to the body and from the body back to the brain,
making sure all messages are received and sent back properly and
efficiently. When the bones of the spine become misaligned (from
the stresses mentioned above) this is called a subluxation.
When subluxations are present in the spine they interrupt and
diminish messages from the brain to the body and vice versa.
These interruptions of messages to the body can look like symptoms of ADD, ADHD, ASD, and the other labels and diagnoses.

When subluxations of the spine are corrected by a doctor of

chiropractic, the nerve supply and messages from the brain to the
body can be restored, helping kids function better. Improving the
health of the nervous system can make sure our body is functioning, healing and regulating properly, helping with the symptoms
kids are experiencing.
The perfect storm of physical, chemical and emotional stress on
our childrens spine and nervous system affects their health and
well-being on a daily basis. How is stress affecting your familys
nervous system? Isnt it time to find out?

Wrist
relief 101

By Hope Zvara

IMAGES

epetitive wrist strain is one of the most common injuries the average American suffers. With an astounding
amount of people leading sedentary jobs and on top of
that living a life full of texting, Facebook and computers, there is
little time of relief for those poor little wrists of ours.
Fitness does not have to be formal, and to be called yoga, it
doesnt even have to be practiced on a yoga mat. Three simple yet
effective moves can help with writers cramp, carpel tunnel (which
is simply inflammation in the carpel tunnel) and forearm strain.
Lets work to take a minibreak whenever we can to best help an
area in which many have discomfort yet few do something about.
In a comfortable seated or standing position, extend your left
arm directly out in front of the shoulder. Flex the hand to turn the
fingers to the sky. Using the other hand, draw back on the fingers,
thumb and top of the palm to a gentle pull as you reach out through
the heel of the hand. Imagine a rod extending out from the heel of
the hand as you flex the palm back. Be mindful to keep the arm
straight (no hyperextension in the elbow) and the shoulder relaxed.
Hold this simple yet intense stretch for five to ten slow mindful
breaths, noticing the stretch in the palm as well as the forearm.
Next, turn the fingers to face downward and now using the opposite hand, draw back on the top of the palm (not just the fingers)
and extend out through the top of the wrist. Check to keep the
length through the arm and allow the fold of the elbow to rotate
upward as you relax the shoulder. Hold this stretch for five to ten
breaths, noticing the stretch in the top of the wrist into the forearm.
Finally, take the same hand and place the palm to the center of
the chest, fingers toward the sky; using the opposite hand clasp
hold of the thumb side of the hand wrapping your fingers into the
center of the left palm. Breathing calmly, start to guide the hand
into a twisted position at the wrist line. As you twist the wrist,
resist the twist with working to draw back against the twist feeling
a deep opening along the wrist and forearm. Be mindful to keep
the wrist and hand upright to keep the twist balanced and deep.
Remain holding the twist for five to ten breaths. As you release,
allow the hand to rest, then work it into an opening and closing
movement until you feel balance once again.
These stretches are incredibly helpful for those of us who
use computers on a regular basis as well as our fellow texting
18

communities that are now seeing repetitive wrist strain much

earlier in life than ever before. Try to incorporate these three simple
stretches into your day at any moment possible; not only will they
give relief to the tech geek, they will also aid in some much-needed
wrist rehab for those of you who suffer from Plank Pose complaints
or tender wrists in any pose that puts pressure on the palms.
As you step back into your everyday lives, remember one important thing: Nothing works unless you actually do it. Good luck!

How does
cremation
measure in
sustainability?

By Jonas A. Zahn

ith each passing year, more Wisconsin families choose

cremation over a conventional casketed cemetery
burial when it comes to end-of-life choices for our
loved ones. Since 2011, cremations have outnumbered burials
in Wisconsin. What is the impact on our environment? Are we
moving in the right direction?
Before getting into the details of cremations and burials, lets
take note that end-of-life choices are exactly that: choices. What we
choose for ourselves or for our loved ones is a private matter. Like
all choices in our lives, we like to make choices that are consistent
with our values. Our values are formed over a lifetime of experience and do not change quickly or easily. Our choices, however, can
change quickly especially upon learning new information. When
I listen to people describe their end-of-life plans, I ask questions
to better understand their values and offer information that might
help individuals make choices in good alignment with their values.
Youre likely reading this magazine because preserving natural
habitats and sustainable living are held highly in your own core
values. It may alarm you to learn that the act of disposing your earthly
human remains could have a larger impact on the planet after your
death than all of the activities of a Tibetans entire living life! Whats
even worse is that these harmful activities bring no enjoyment or
betterment to our lives or those who will survive us. The environmentally wasteful activities in death care are entirely avoidable.
The good news is that we need not petition our legislature to
change laws. Nor do we have to wait for large corporations to offer
alternatives. Change can happen right now starting with you and
me. We have the power to make an immediate impact by simply
informing ourselves and others of our end-of-life choices and how
our choices will impact the environment.
There are three talking points for cremation regarding the environment: carbon footprint, toxic pollution and land use. One public
perception is that occupying a cemetery plot wastes valuable land
resources that could otherwise be put to better use. The reality is
that the land used to extract, refine, store and transport the few
pounds of fossil fuel required for a single cremation is significantly
larger than the area of a cemetery plot. Furthermore, the type of
land from which we extract fossil fuels (natural gas) takes us into
wildlife habits in precious areas of our world including Alaska,
www.naturespathways.com

Canada and the oceans. And then there is high-volume horizontal

hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for natural gas. Fracking requires
sand which is being mined here in Wisconsin. Now imagine that
cemetery plot it is minimal in comparison.
On the topic of toxicity, the EPA attributes cremation as the thirdlargest polluter of our waterways with mercury. Add to this the cocktail of emissions including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur
dioxide, particulate matter, mercury, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen
chloride, non-methane volatile organic compounds, and other heavy
metals, in addition to persistent organic pollutants (POP). For a body
that contains metal implants or dental fillings, the impact of incineration releases even more harmful dioxins and mercury. The United
Nations has estimated that 0.2 percent of global emission of dioxins
and furans are from cremation.
While embalming is not required for direct cremation, circumstances that include a viewing or service prior to cremation often
include embalming. The toxic gases released by cremating an
embalmed body are cause for further controversy over the health and
environmental impacts of cremation.
Incineration of fossil fuel during a three-hour cremation generates 600 pounds of carbon-dioxide equivalents (CO2e). The carbon
footprint of a steel casket is 2,000 pounds of CO2e. However, a
simple wooden, locally made natural burial casket has a footprint
of less than 50 pounds of CO2e. A natural burial shroud has an even
smaller footprint. Planting 100 seedling trees can sequester 200
pounds of CO2 in the first year. If carbon footprint is important to
you, and you prefer cremation over a natural burial, consider planting 100 trees that will offset the carbon footprint of your cremation
in three to four years time. Dont wait, plant them now.
Jonas A. Zahn is the owner of the Northwoods Casket Company
and Carriage House Works. Jonas is uncompromising in his
commitment to sustainability using locally-sourced woods, local
craftsmen (and women), and environmentally safe paints and
finishes to build caskets and classic Arts & Crafts furniture.
The company plants 100 trees for every casket made. The Northwoods Casket

Giving
thanks
It is necessary for
happiness and joy!

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC

Got no check books, got no banks. Still Id like to express my thanks

I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night.

Irving Berlin

elcome, November! For those of us who live in Wisconsin, November is a month that transitions us into cold
snow, dark nights and a long winter. In the U.S., we
vote for new officials at the beginning of the month, honor veterans about a week later and begin the holiday season by celebrating
Thanksgiving. The clocks have fallen back, and there is less light
until the winter solstice, at which time sunlight slowly but steadily
increases again.
Upon hearing the word thanksgiving, many people think of
the holiday celebrated in the United States. Others think of what
they are thankful for. Often, it is easy for us to associate what we
are thankful for with concepts, things and people that are outside
of ourselves. This is very easy for us to do because we live in a
global society that for hundreds, if not thousands, of years has
focused on materialism and progress that can be found outside
of our simple, small individual reality.

20

Natures Pathways | November 2014

The Universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything

you want you already are.
Rumi
Thankfulness, gratitude and appreciation are all synonymous
in the dictionary. Generally, it is easy to meditate on them when
things are going well for us. The challenge for us is when our reality
is filled with suffering and other hallmarks of the human condition. Many experts and successful people keep gratitude journals
to overcome this. Oprah Winfrey consistently writes down five
things she is grateful for each day and has done so since before she
acquired fame and monetary wealth.

www.naturespathways.com

In the book Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of

Contentment, Calm and Confidence, Rick Hanson, Ph.D., talks
constantly about the need for taking in the good. He discusses
that our brains have been wired toward negativity since women and
men created civilization. This was for survival. As a result, it is easier
for our minds to gravitate to what we materially lack and create a
general sense of negativity rather than the positivity for what we
inherently have. He also states that we have to build up our taking
in the good muscle on a regular basis. We need to be mindful every
minute of every day focusing on what is positive and what we are
grateful for as a way to foster ongoing happiness and joy.
Gratitude goes beyond the mine and thine and claims the truth
that all of life is a pure gift. In the past I always thought of gratitude
as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I
realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of
gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is
given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.

Henri J. M. Nouwen
Most often when we look at our world and the systems within
it, we tend to focus on opposites and differences. And for many
years, we have been conditioned to believe many negative things
about ourselves so much so that it can at times seem almost
impossible to change. In studying trauma and the brain, people
can easily become predisposed to negativity. When in real danger
(i.e., being hunted by a bear), our fight-or-flight response is the

natural way that our brain can protect us: by speeding all of our
bodily systems to help us escape. But today, trauma caused by
repeated fight-or-flight responses can result from fighting in wars,
being in accidents, witnessing horrific events or something as
mundane as hearing a small sentence that scared us to death.
As predispositioned as our brains are for survival, they also have
the ability to hardwire happiness, as Hanson eloquently describes
in his book. Many scientists today are studying what is known as
neuroplasticity or brain plasticity. This is where the brain is able to
rewire itself by changing neural pathways and synapses. So, hardwiring happiness entails reprograming the brain to focus on positive experiences. Giving thanks, being grateful, and appreciating the
good including what we inherently are born with or later acquire
can be the starting point to experiencing joy and happiness.
Finding ways to release negative thoughts and emotions by
reframing them and changing ones perspective can seem like
denial. Is it a challenge? Yes! But it is doable. Why is it important?
Because we may not be able to change the physical world around
us, but we can certainly change our attitudes. Remember Mahatma
Gandhis famous quote: You must be the change you wish to see in
the world. We can only be the change by giving thanks for who
we are and what we possess internally: our gifts and talents.

hough true for everyone, the following information will

feel more relevant to you if your sun, North Node, Chiron
and/or a group of other planets are in Scorpio on your
birth chart.

What is Scorpios intention?

If last month Libra was inviting us into relationship awareness,

this month our inner Pluto is drawing us deeper into the crucible of intimacy, feelings and change that relationships inevitably
require. Ouch! Its Scorpio.
The Scorpio in us is driven to uncover the dark, hidden secrets
in ourselves, others and life. Thus, when we are in our watery,
feeling Scorpio self, we can seem intense, hidden and serious.
We may be drawn to crisis situations and melodrama. Scorpios
spiritual intention is to strengthen our trust in spirit, to know that

feelings, to accept support from others, and embrace cooperation
and merging of power. In the process, we become more aware of
other peoples psychology (desires, needs, wants and motives) and
learn how to blend our energy with theirs to meet our own needs.
Our unconscious Scorpio self becomes judgmental and impatient, overreacts intensively, and becomes preoccupied with other
peoples motivations, taking things personally. Unenlightened
Scorpio can be fearful of change and frightened by the unknown.
www.naturespathways.com

What needs healing and growth?

Our wounded Scorpio, doubting our immortality, fears death.

Change always involves some form of death. Thus, we cling to
things and people. Perceiving enemies who threaten to take them
away, we use our power to manipulate or destroy, all the time
putting on a face of light-hearted sarcasm. Though we are very
sensitive to other peoples feelings, we keep ours hidden, afraid
that vulnerability will be certain death.
To heal our Scorpio selves, we need to use our intense passion
for truth to discover the mysterious secrets of life. Our wounds
and losses will ultimately demonstrate that we never really lose
anything, rather the essence of all we treasure remains with us,
born into new forms and relationships. This journey requires that
we embrace our feelings and be vulnerable with others, knowing
our ego will be challenged, and though it may feel like death, it is
actually another part of our phoenix soul, birthing through the
fire of transformation with fuller expression into this world of
time and space. We then feel Spirit, know our immortality and
are happy to release people and things to live freely and playfully
in this world of illusions, knowing we can never really lose their
essence. Our Scorpio intensity turns to passionate delight in how
Spirit is hidden in the changes, deaths and rebirths of this world.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Scorpio self, pay attention to your feelings.
Do you routinely honor and respect your own feelings and share
them with trusted loved ones? Or do you stay hidden? How good
are you at reading other peoples feelings? What do you do with
that? Are you drawn to melodrama, in yourself or others? Jealous
much? Whats behind that? Do you ask directly for what you need
or do you manipulate? Do you resist cooperation? Do you lash out
when feeling threatened? Have you learned the difference between
interdependence and codependence? Are you confident about your
immortality? Can you enthusiastically embrace change?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

With Mercury (mind) and Venus (relationship, values) still in

close proximity to the sun at this time, they combine with Saturn
(responsibility) to give extra Scorpion support to your capacity this month to examine, unearth, value and make use of your
hidden dark secrets.
On Nov. 6, the full moon is in Taurus, opposite Scorpio. Invoke
your earthly strengths of self-worth, self-resourcefulness, ownership, patience and steadfastness as polar balances to your turbulent Scorpio feelings. With Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, in a harmonic
angle to the sun and moon, you are given a boost of confidence in
your ability to feel empowered in your relating, especially if you
honor Jupiters challenging tendency (90 degree) to go overboard
with your power.

Astragalus

Astragalus membranaceus,
Astragalus mongholicus

ative to China, astragalus has been used for centuries in

traditional Chinese medicine. In the United States, the
herb gained popularity in the 1980s. There are actually
over 2,000 species of astragalus; however, the two related species
Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus are the
ones primarily used for health purposes.
Historically, astragalus has been used in traditional Chinese
medicine, usually in combination with other herbs, to support
and enhance the immune system. It is still widely used in China
for chronic hepatitis and as an adjunctive therapy for cancer. It
is also used as a folk or traditional remedy for colds and upper
respiratory infections, and for heart disease.
The root of the astragalus plant is typically used in soups, teas,
extracts or capsules. Astragalus is generally used with other herbs,
such as ginseng, angelica and licorice.

What the science says

The evidence for using astragalus for any health condition is

limited. High-quality clinical trials (studies in people) are generally lacking. There is some preliminary evidence to suggest that

astragalus, either alone or in combination with other herbs, may

have potential benefits for the immune system, heart and liver,
and as an adjunctive therapy for cancer.
U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (NCCAM)-funded investigators are studying the effects
of astragalus on the body, particularly on the immune system.

Side effects and cautions

Astragalus is considered safe for most adults. Its possible side

effects are not well known because astragalus is generally used in
combination with other herbs.
Astragalus may interact with medications that suppress the
immune system, such as the drug cyclophosphamide taken by
cancer patients and similar drugs taken by organ transplant recipients. It may also affect blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
People should be aware that some astragalus species, usually
not found in dietary supplements used by humans, can be toxic.
For example, several species that grow in the United States contain
the neurotoxin swainsonine and have caused locoweed poisoning in animals. Other species contain potentially toxic levels of
selenium.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to
Talk campaign.

Why try
chiropractic?

By Amber Erickson, DC, MEEBW

hen people hear the word chiropractor they most

often think of back pain. And while chiropractors are
very good at treating back pain, chiropractic also has
well-documented benefits for the entire body.
Chiropractors are absolutely spinal specialists, as chiropractic
can have very positive outcomes when used to treat musculoskeletal
complaints. However, there are so many other conditions that can
be successfully addressed with chiropractic wellness care, and it is a
disservice to the profession to say that low back pain is all we manage.
Chiropractic truly is a whole-body, holistic treatment option.
Chiropractic philosophy is about removing the interferences
within the nervous system, which allows the body to heal itself
from within. The key to chiropractic care is the removal of neurological noise, which is the brain constantly being bombarded with
information from the extremities and the body. This can be from
chronic illness, toxin overload, stress, injuries or a number of
other causes.
Health can be greatly enhanced by improvements in posture, and
this is true for people of every age. A young infant will benefit as
much from correct posture as an elderly grandmother will. Chiropractic care can enhance the sensations of position and balance
(proprioception), which will have immediate and positive effects
on the body in numerous other places. The body is a connected
whole and chiropractors address it as such by treating the nervous
system through spinal adjustments done in a systematic and safe
way. The nervous system affects all of the trillions of cells that make
up the human body, and this helps to explain why chiropractic care
can be so effective for numerous body conditions.
We have had personal experience, and there have been numerous studies published that clearly show the benefits of chiropractic care on a range of unrelated conditions. These include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder,
blood pressure regulation, asthma, multiple sclerosis, ear infections, headaches, carpel tunnel and many others. The many spinal
interconnections with the nervous system will help to explain why
www.naturespathways.com

a spinal adjustment can have both mechanical and physiological

effects on the entire body.
A chiropractor works by correcting a subluxation in a joint.
As defined by the American Chiropractic Association, this is a
complex of functional or structural articular changes that compromise neural integrity and that may influence organ systems and
general health. This simply means that the joints of the body are
not moving as correctly as they should be, and this is interfering with nerve flow. A chiropractor will help the body to remove
these by performing a gentle adjustment into the joint, usually
with their hands.
Chiropractic is a safe and gentle way to treat the entire body and
can be used on a myriad of conditions. Infants, children and people
of all ages can greatly benefit from receiving wellness chiropractic
care throughout life. Pets and animals can also greatly benefit from
having periodic chiropractic care, so dont forget to bring your dog
with you the next time you go to the chiropractor!

The lily is unique among flowers. Unlike the pretty but prevalent rose
or the dainty daffodil, this flower comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes
and colors. Each lily tells a tale through its symbolism: friendship,
devotion, hope, faith, renewal and more. But no matter what they
look like or their meaning, lilies all have one thing in common a
sense of peaceful beauty.
Cedarburg store Lillies Goods shares much with the lily, and not
just a similar-sounding name. This family-owned and operated shop
also boasts endless, beautiful variety coupled with its own story.

Sprouting from a good cause

Lilies can also signify a promise, and in a way, Karen and Jim Lillie
have made one: to vendors, customers, the earth and humanity. The
promise? To make a difference in the world.
Opened in 2007, Lillies Goods is a champion of social justice and
environmental sustainability, accessorized with unique and stylish
goods. Customers can find out the take behind each product in
the store: how it was made, who crafted it and how purchasing this
product will help change someones life.

The Lillies experience

From the moment you enter Lillies you dont know what to look at
first: clothing, jewelry, scarves, purses, headbands, sandals, knitwear,
soaps, toys, baby gifts and more. But when you take a closer look,
you learn that these items are more than just products.
While looking at a gorgeous sweater that would be perfect with
your new boots, you glance at its tag and see a picture of the woman
who made the sweater. You read on the tag that she was saved from
domestic slavery and found a job at a fair trade company, where she
is making enough money to send her children to school.
26

Natures Pathways | November 2014

Now you just need some leggings so you can wear your new
sweater tomorrow. You find an amazing pair of leggings that you
cant live without. This time the tag is different; instead, it lists the
eco-fabrics its made of: organic cotton, bamboo, soy and hemp.
No pesticides. Fair trade. Sustainable. Fast growing. Naturally antibacterial. Bio-degradable. Strong. Earth friendly. And crazy stylish
OK, you added that one.
You continue walking around and check out some vibrant
beaded jewelry that caught your eye. When you look closer, you see
the beads are actually made of rolled up magazines. Intrigued, you
read the tag and find out the beads are hand-rolled in Uganda by a
company called BeadforLife. Women who make the unique jewelry
are enrolled in a program not only to make the bracelet in your
hand, but to gain knowledge on how to open a baking account, hire
employees, run a business, and create a better life for themselves
and their children.
You walk by a line of adorable stuffed barnyard animals and
remember you have that baby shower coming up. You pick up the
cutest one, the pig with a pirate patch, and again read the tag. Its
made of organic cotton, inside and out.
www.naturespathways.com

Sseko Ribbon Sandals BeadforLife jewelry

Fair trade clothing

You glance over and see a sign that says Im made from a recycled milk jug. It has you wondering, and then you see the tower of
toy trucks, blocks, feeding bowls, airplanes and tool sets. Note to
self: Come back with your Christmas list!
Not to mention that you could use a journal to keep track of
your holiday shopping. And sure enough, theres a journal: a beautiful leather journal. Youve learned by now to read the tag! Made in
India. Not just made in India, but made by a caste of people who are
excluded in their society. Making these journals has become a way
out of poverty and out of their social stigma.
Then you overhear an employee talking to another customer,
explaining the story of some leather ribbon sandals. Youre immediately drawn in when you hear that they are made by girls in Uganda
who are working to save money for college. The sandals are brilliant;
you choose which color or pattern of ribbons you like, and then you

can wrap them up in hundreds of different ways. A gift for you and a
gift of education for a Ugandan student yes please!
You push the hair out of your face youve been doing that all day.
You realize they probably have headbands at Lillies (they seem to have
just about everything). Then you see them: hundreds of options! You
look up at the sign and read that with each headband purchased, money
is donated to provide three meals for a child in need in eastern Africa.
Now you realize you have to stop shopping so you dont spend
your whole paycheck, but you cant help but want to walk through
and make sure you read all the stories. You read about the lucky
three-legged pigs made in Chile. You read about the bullet crosses
made in Liberia. You read about a line of handbags from Cambodia
that works to end human trafficking. You read and read and read
until you realize you can make a difference; you can make a difference with the things and gifts you buy. You can make a fairer world
by buying fair trade products.

Yes
in
action

By Helen Borth

HERES A CHALLENGE FOR YOU:

Say yes to all thoughts and feelings that arise: memories,

desires, pain, needs, anger, traffic, addictions, etc.

Say yes to changes in your life: moving, losing a job,

weddings, illness, deaths, a car that needs fixing, etc.

Say yes to your whole physical self: Your hairdo, weight,

abilities, insufficiencies, etc.

Hang in there for a moment. Here is the uplifting spiritual

approach to saying yes: By saying yes, you are willing to accept
what has just shown up in your present moment as a fact because
it is right in front of you. There it is in plain view.
Here is the trick: Allow the mind to say yes before it automatically labels the item in sight with any one of the above words by
placing it in a like or dislike column. This does not mean you
have to agree with it, just that you acknowledge its presence.
Your level of well-being is greatly enhanced by this momentary
truth; something showed up. As a result, the auric field receives
an uplifting frequency instead of another addition of resisting
energy. On an energy level, its as if your energy hands came up
for protection in an attempt to create distance from what is seen
in this present moment. Any against pattern is unusually powerful
because it can hinder personal growth. What you resist persists
is an axiom worthy of examination.
Immediately following a yes or OK response, everyone then has
the opportunity to move in any number of directions because they
have opened the door to an unlimited vibration. This freeing space
is exactly what is wanted, especially before an automatic opinion is
placed on that which just happened to show up. Remember you do
not have to agree with the item presenting itself, just practice not
being against it as your first reaction. Easier said than done, but
from a healthier place in consciousness it is well worth it. Everything set in motion to follow will be colored with an acceptance
flavor, no matter how negative the learned response happens to be.
It is easy to see this way of perceiving is an entirely inside job.
It appears to be most difficult to accomplish when relating to all
those patterns of physical pain and emotional sorrow. This practice means the initial reaction of saying yes is not a personal,
28

Natures Pathways | November 2014

past learned response but rather an acknowledgement of what is

presenting itself in this moment.
EXAMPLE: What if we came from a neutral acceptance, an allowing
place, and viewed each event as just a happening? It would be amazing.
The idea to deal with everything from a yes is accessible only when
we notice the past habit of responding in the old learned way.
This pattern came into awareness as a son was taking his elderly
mother to have her nails done. When he reached for her charge
card to pay for the service, he found the card was not there. He
paid with cash and took her home. The next hour he looked in
all the possible places it could be but the card did not show up.
Rather than react with fear and worry he applied the yes idea.
Even though it was a late response, he chose not to be paralyzed.
He proceeded to spread mulch on some needed garden spots. He
knew the yes idea could be used in a variety of ways and even at
unusual times. Later he called and canceled the charge card and
got a new number and card for her. He saw the whole event as just
another happening that showed up, one no different than taking
his mother to a beauty solon and dealing with mulch.
Choose to say yes. The purpose of yes is always the same, no
matter when or where it is used. It brings the yes action to a
more neutral, peaceful and uplifting present moment place. This
tool will help every participant journey through the upcoming
holidays in a more peaceful and lighthearted manner.

7 ways to
change your
thinking

By Lucas J. Robak

t is easy for someone to tell you to think positive when

things are going bad. Being told that only good can come
from every situation, and that we are exactly where we need
to be can be frustrating to hear over and over again.
No matter how hard we try, sometimes we cannot get ourselves
out of the dark spiral of negative thinking we put ourselves into. It
may be because of external events that we cant control, or in my
case, a neurological disorder like multiple sclerosis (MS), which
brings on depression even when everything is going great.
Luckily, over the centuries people found out how to correct their
thoughts to a more empowering mindset and gave us the tools on
how to do it. There are countless ways to change your thinking, but
these seven worked for me and I hope that they will work for you.
1. THE WORD CANCEL

Say the word cancel and your limiting beliefs vanish into nothingness: I wish it were that simple. But, whenever you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts of limiting beliefs, repeat the word
cancel until you are able to introduce a positive thought. Over time,
it becomes easier to change your thinking with just this one word.
2. GRATUITY STONE

There is nothing special or magic about this stone. You can

find one on Bradford Beach or on the sidewalk downtown. The
purpose of the gratuity stone is to say one thing you are thankful
for every time you touch it. You should touch it twice a day at a
minimum: once in the morning when you put it in your pocket
and once at night when you take it out. I have mine next to my
phone so I touch it countless times throughout the day.
3. RUBBER BAND/BRACELET

There is no need to get fancy here, though you are more than
welcome to if you want. The purpose of the rubber band is to act
as a reminder to be conscientious of your thoughts. When you
notice the rubber band/bracelet, notice what thoughts are in
your mind and correct them as necessary. Constantly be thinking
about thinking; your self-talk produces your whole world.
4. REMINDER NOTES

These can be from small Post-its to a magnificent mural on your wall.

They can be on the ceiling above your bed, on the mirror in your
www.naturespathways.com

bathroom, on the walls of the shower, on your computer monitor and

even on your steering wheel. On these notes you may write or draw
empowering words or phrases that you want to keep in your mind all
day rather than the negative muck that were surrounded with.
5. AFFIRMATIONS

Also known as autosuggestions, they are phrases stated in the positive present tense that describe who you want to be. These phrases
you repeat hundreds to thousands of times a day to yourself. Many
people even write their top three affirmations three times each in the
morning and three times each before bed. Use emotion and visualize them as true to make them more powerful on the subconscious.
6. STOP WATCHING CERTAIN MEDIA

A week after I stopped watching, reading and listening to the news

I began to feel better and had more energy. There are also so many
negative subliminal messages on TV and in commercials that the
information we receive goes against who we are and becomes devastating to our psyche. Start controlling the information that you feed
yourself and watch your thoughts follow suit.
7. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH CERTAIN PEOPLE

Youre the average of the five people you hang out with most. If everyone around you is a negative complainer who blames everyone and
makes excuses, you soon will too. Determine who you want to be and
surround yourself with that type of person. This is your life, allow
only those people who will make a positive impact on you into it.
You now have an arsenal of techniques to attack those negative thoughts that have been holding you back. Knowing how
habits are formed, I suggest to take these one at a time and spend
anywhere from a week to a month on each technique before
adding your next choice.
Make it a diamond day!

The heart of
biological
dentistry
should be 80%
less
dentistry!

By Carol Vander Stoep, RDH, BSDH, OMT

A THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILD rests quietly in a dental chair,

arms upturned in total relaxation. Back teeth severely rotted,

the childs parents have brought him to this clinic because they
abhorred the traditional diagnosis/treatment recommended for
their child: general anesthetic and unsightly, ill-fitting full stainless
steel crowns for his back molars. They had heard of a better way...
The dental team works smoothly in a fifteen-minute, oft
repeated choreograph. The assistant maintains eye contact and
speaks softly to the child while the dentist silently plies the tools
of his trade. Air abrasion powers away most of the tooth decay.
A blast of ozone gas to each tooth penetrates deeply to inactivate
remaining germ invaders and their acidic toxins. This neutralizes
each tooths internal chemistry to allow rapid remineralization
from within eventually leading to petrification of the lesion.
The ozone may also help preserve a dying pulps vitality.
After applying a series of optional resins that mimics the
varying layers of tooth structure with todays superior adhesive
qualities, a quarter of his mouth is restored!
Benefits: A brief, anesthetic-free, relaxed visit for both child
and dental team, translates into economical lifetime solutions.
Compared with all-too-frequently recommended stainless steel
crowns placed while under general anesthetic, multiple episodes
of which can result in significant brain dysfunction, naturalcolored tooth repairs leave children with higher self-esteem,
better function, improved tooth alignment, and pleasant feelings
about dental visits.

Welcome to the world of (often) drill-free Biomimetic

dentistry!
So opens one of my favorite chapters in Mouth Matters. Not
all minimally invasive (MI), biomimetic dentists are biological or
vice versa, so I especially appreciate the rare biological dentist who
embraces this less-aggressive dentistry that mimics Mother Natures
complicated tooth design and thus is much less likely to fail!
Not just for children, MI and biomimetic dentistry help avoid
the eventual root canals, crowns, extractions, cavitations (pockets
of severe bone degeneration) and implant complications biological dentists abhor.
Shouldnt the 80 percent less dentistry these 21st century techniques offer trump the main concern of people who visit biological dentists: safely swapping mercury fillings for white fillings?
Carol Vander Stoep, RDH, BSDH, OMT writes for Dr. Bryan Schwartz because
she advocates the changes in dentistry he exemplifies. A hygienist and occasional
writer for Dr. Mercola, she is the author of the book on oral/systemic connections, Mouth Matters: How Your Mouth Ages Your Body and What You Can
Do About It. She created this article to illustrate revolutionary dentistry so you

Whats up?
How giving up

By Kim Hall

Sigh.

an you recall the time you experienced the biggest sigh you ever

you had tried everything and wondered,

What now?
I can remember that moment the
moment that led up to my having such an
experience. Life had pushed me to a place
where there was no longer anywhere else to
turn. I looked left and right and there was no
one in sight. Who could possibly understand
what I was going through? It was at that
moment I discovered a new direction that
could be a source of answers: up. Thats right,
I looked up to the sky and asked, Why?
The sky: a space occupied by flying birds,
wispy clouds, a rising sun, and the moon and
stars. Grandfather Sky, as the Native Americans call it. The sky that those who walked
before us were so connected to because it
was their source of daily light and education.
Looking up at that moment led to my most
memorable sigh. A time that resulted in one
of my most profound wake-up calls. It was
at that moment that I realized I needed to
pay attention, to listen and to learn what was
happening around me.
Speaking of being awake in the darkness, ever had a wake-up call? Beyond the
type where you call the front desk at a hotel
to ring your room at 6 a.m. You know, like
the ones where the universe is trying to get
your attention to listen and learn? Some
say its the two-by-four across the forehead moment.

My life has been full of many wake-up

calls, some I listened to others I ignored.
They come in many shapes and sizes
through physical, relationship and mental
shifts. All of them contained a message.
You see, I always thought I was in control,
and it was in those times where I learned
that there was more to this world than met
the eye. Embarrassed, confused and lost, I
wondered what I had done and at what cost.
It was at that moment of hearing the song
Amazing Grace that I surrendered and
realized the only direction that served me
well and that I could trust was up, to the sky.
That looking to the heavens and saying a
prayer was about all I could bear. So interesting that the answers that came were
surrounded by signs, signs, signs, everywhere
signs. So interesting that when I truly gave up
control, when I surrendered to the flow, there
was so much more for me to know.
Many times when we embrace our
wake-up calls, it amplifies our light because
we see things in a new way. The answers
that come from upstairs are more easily
received and perceived. All of us eventually
make it there some day.
We often hear stories of near-death
experiences where people see the light.
That light that shines above us also resides
within us. We all have the choice to awaken
it or forsaken it, that sunshine represented
www.naturespathways.com

in our solar plexus.

Like the sun that shines, I realized its
natural for everything to grow upward
including us. It was like a game at first when
I realized that when I looked up, asked for
guidance and remembered to breathe I
could succeed. What connected me to the
source above and all its love was so much
more than I could imagine. Shifting was
truly an exercise of letting the sunshine in
and simply allowing myself to receive it.
Seven areas supported me to shift and
uplift physically, emotionally and mentally:
1. Up your thoughts every day
2. Get plenty of fresh air and sun time
one-plus hour per day
3. Align your spine; its the heart of your
sunshine
4. Take breaths of balance
5. Eat/drink nourishing food
6. Move
7. Listen within to win
The more I learned to truly give up to
the divine wisdom above, the more doors
opened to success. Every person, place and

thing is a messenger to us, shining light on

the best path we can play.

Spaghetti Squash
Skillet

By Emily Niesen

Heres a great way to cook up a large quantity of spaghetti squash. When you are tired
of eating squash this fall, store them in your
basement and enjoy them all winter and
spring!

Ingredients

Spaghetti squash, any size, any quan-

tity (this depends on how thick you

enjoy the skillet)
2-3 cups vegetables roughly chopped.
I suggest portabella or crimini mushrooms, onion, garlic, kale, peppers
and carrots
cup tomatoes, chopped
Half to one whole jar of tomato sauce
(again, quantity depends on how
thick you enjoy the skillet)

Two to three black garlic cloves,

chopped, optional (www.blackgarlicna.com)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mean-

while to bake squash, cut squash

width-wise into whole circles with
skin intact. Scrape out seeds from
circles and place circles on baking
sheet. Bake 40 minutes.
2. In the meantime, saut all vegetables,

except tomatoes, in oil on mediumhigh heat for six minutes.

3. When squash is done baking, scrape
the spaghetti away from the skin,
peeling it apart so it is stringy.
4. Add squash and tomatoes to skillet
of other vegetables and stir, reducing
heat to medium-low.
5. Add in canned tomato sauce or sauce
jar. If preferred, top with black garlic.
6. Let simmer on low heat for 10
minutes. Enjoy!

A fundamentally
new approach to
antioxidant therapy
An article review

By Tracy Bretl, D.O.

xidative stress is associated with over 200 diseases, along

with normal aging. It is not clear whether oxidative stress
causes disease or if it is the result of other types of tissue
injury. Previous studies have concluded that vitamin E supplementation does not prevent major cardiovascular events or cancer, and
supplementation with antioxidants does not improve diabetes.
There is a strong correlation between a biochemical marker
called TBARS and products that reflect oxidative damage to DNA.
Studies which supplement with vitamins E, C and folic acid, as well
as those which use a concentrate or 600 grams of fruits and vegetables per day showed no change in markers of oxidative damage.
This study looks at the induction of endogenous antioxidant
enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase and catalase. These
enzymes, produced within the body, have an enormous theoretical advantage over exogenous antioxidants. This enzyme activity
decreases TBARS, which indicates a decrease in oxidative stress.
Protandim a supplement containing Bacopa monniera,
Silybum marianum (milk thistle), Withania somnifera (ashwaganda), Camellia sinensis (green tea), and Curcuma longa
(turmeric) was given to two groups of volunteers ranging in
age from 20 to 78 years. One group (20 subjects) received a full
dose of Protandim daily and one group (four subjects) received a
half dose of Protandim daily. Blood samples were analyzed before
supplementation began and after supplementation for 30 days.
All volunteers were instructed to report any adverse reactions
or side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, drowsiness,
gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, constipation or itching. No
adverse reactions or side effects were reported.
TBARS were measured before supplementation and were found
to be correlated to age, the oldest showing levels three times higher
than the youngest. There was no gender difference. The TBARS
level for 19 of 20 of those receiving the full dose of Protandim was
significantly lowered by 40 percent after 30 days of supplementation. The age-related increase in oxidative stress disappeared
www.naturespathways.com

with Protandim supplementation. In 12 subjects who continued

Protandim for 120 days, the change in TBARS was maintained.
Superoxide dismutase was increased by 30 percent after 120
days and catalase was increased by 54 percent after 120 days.
TBARS evaluation revealed that the half dose of Protandim was
not quite as effective after 30 days.
This study shows the fundamentally different approach of safely
and modestly inducing endogenous antioxidant enzymes may
finally provide a powerful tool to study oxidative stress, the diseases
associated with oxidative stress, and the aging process itself.

Aware
body
The healing of
troubled emotions

By Rich Hanhardt

This article is the second in a series entitled

Transformation: The ultimate form of
emotional healing. Future articles will explore
the other components of this work, Natural
mind and Awakened soul (or spirit).

motions live in the body. We do not

think our emotions: Even though
thoughts or memories may bring
emotions to the surface, they are experienced in the body. When we are sad,
we may cry and have tears; if our crying
is deep, we may experience sobbing, our
body shaking in sadness. When we are
angry, our muscles tense; we may get red
in the face as blood flows to the surface
of our skin, and we may experience a
rush of adrenaline preparing our body for
the primordial flight or fight response.
However, the fact that emotions live in the
body is also a key to our healing.
It may be comforting to know that there
are answers to emotional struggles or
suffering, and these answers are already
alive inside of you. These answers are
designed just for you and they contain
enormous amounts of energy that is
dedicated for your healing. There is a

connection that must be understood to
move into this healing realm.
There is a spiritual and mystical connection between emotions living in the body and
images that want to flow from our psyches.
Further, these answers take a specific
form that can be understood, and this form
is the form of images. But what are images?
We all have an understanding of what
image might mean, but we must understand the images of healing in a new way.
The Native Americans named us image
bearers and honored the carrying of
images as our primary role. And in Genesis,
God spoke, Let us make them [humans] in
our own image, again honoring our role as
carriers of sacred images. So we are recognized from the very beginning as having
the great privilege of bearing holy images
and these images draw us into the role of

acting as mirrors of the sacred. And the

sacred images stir our healing emotions.
However we have given up image-bearing
and when we refuse to be mirrors of the
divine and to stop reflecting the images
alive in us, we lose contact with the healing
images we really need to live effectively in the
world. We build an internal dam to our own
healing. However we can still draw from a
deep well of living waters which are promised by many faiths to be the giver of life.
Here are some of the ways in which this
work is now being done:
Meditation and contemplative prayer
The recording and study of dream
images
Personal symbol study

Light and sound therapies

Massage therapy, yoga, Reiki, etc.

Each of these interventions involves work

with the spiritual and mystical connection
between the spirit and the body. Each, in
its own way, has as its goal opening the
flow between images and the emotions.
Lets look at an example:
You awake one night from a dream with a
great sense of anxiety. Your dream is about a
woman who refuses to respond to your pleas
that she leave and then she turns and bares
her teeth teeth that turn into fangs like
those of a wolf. She snarls and screams at you,
saying, Get out! I am living here now. As
you awake, your body is perspiring, you are
breathing heavily and you are close to tears
about your fear and about losing your home.
When you visit your spiritual life coach,
you relate the dream. He helps you see that
the dream is made up of parts of you in
symbolic form. They are:
The woman
Teeth like fangs of a wolf
Snarling and screaming at you
The loss of your home
Your advisor will now help you establish the links between your emotions
and these images. Jung taught that these
dream images are about parts of you. For
example, you realize that the woman with
fangs is an angry part of you that you have
never allowed to surface. And losing your
home means that you must leave your
comfort zone with your new tamed wolf
to live effectively in the world. Tension
leaves and anxiety lessens as the dream
work continues. You now begin to experience an understanding of your symbols
and also relief in your body real aware
body healing!

o you purchase fresh, organic veggies for your family or

opt for the warehouse stores bargain deals? Would you
rather buy packaged macaroni and cheese made with
free-trade organic brown rice pasta ($3 a box) or highly processed,
GMO-laden, name brand mac n cheese? Where do you choose to
spend your time volunteering for what you deem a worthy cause,
such as protecting a precious part of Wisconsin from a proposed
mine or enjoying a beautiful fall day walking along the lakeshore
with your family or glued to the TV, being bombarded with
promotions for all sorts of products and pharmaceuticals?
We always have a choice often many, in fact. We instinctively
know what is better for our bodies, minds and spirits then why
do we often opt to take the other path, the supposedly simpler
way? Is it habit? Is it peer pressure?

There is a relatively new

movement afoot in the
investment world known
as impact investing, a term
that emerged around 2007.
There is a relatively new movement afoot in the investment world known as impact investing, a term that emerged
around 2007. Men and women around the world are opting to
pour a percentage of their income, time and energy into companies, organizations and funds with the intention of generating a
measurable, beneficial social and environmental impact, as well
as financial returns on their investments.
According to the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment, some $3.74 trillion, or 11 percent, of total United States
assets under management were placed in sustainable investments
in 2012, up five times that of the amount in 1995.
Impact investors are primarily distinguished by their intention to address social and environmental challenges through
their decisions around the use of capital. For example, criteria to
evaluate the positive social and/or environmental outcomes of
investments are an integrated component of the impact investment process, alongside a financial return. In contrast, practitioners of socially responsible investing (SRI) also include negative
(avoidance) criteria as part of their investment decisions. What
www.naturespathways.com

separates impact investing also known as community investing

from SRI are social screening and shareholder advocacy.
More and more people are beginning to appreciate that investors can earn returns at the same time they drive social impact
and solve social problems. Increasingly, people understand that
solving a world problem like hunger not only presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to build intangible assets along with
tangible financial ones
A survey published in May 2014 from the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) and JP Morgan shows impressive growth in
impact investing by fund managers, foundations and development
financial institutions, with commitments of $10.6 billion in 2013
and $12.7 billion in 2014, an increase of 19 percent, according to
Cece Derringer with Homewise Community Investment Fund.
Banks and investment companies are getting on board the
impact investing and SRI bandwagon as well. One investment firm
recently sold $12 million worth of green bonds from the World
Bank, with a minimum investment of just $1,000. The proceeds
are being used to fund projects like alternative energy programs.
Growing in popularity are community development financial
institutions (CDFIs), which specialize in helping those who would
not otherwise have access to capital from mainstream financial
institutions through loan funds, banks, credit unions and venture
capital funds. Today, there are almost 900 CDFIs in the U.S. that
assist through supporting microenterprises, affordable housing
and other services.
The problems impact investments are trying to address, like
clean drinking water or health concerns, are real to anyone following the Ebola outbreak in western Africa. More attention is also
being paid to the nonfinancial effects, both inside and outside of
corporations. Coca-Cola is an example of this kind of strategy.
To some investors, the company sells calorie-laden, sugary drinks
around the world; to others, it is a company that understands the
need for clean water and is working to protect water sources.
In addition, a new sector of Internet-based investing platforms
that aims to bring impact investing into the reach of ordinary
individuals with average incomes, is also emerging. Microfinance
loans, rather than equity investments or venture capital, are the
primary investment vehicles in these platforms, whereby residents
of most U.S. states can participate in debt funding to microfinance
institutions in developing countries, with interest payouts averaging around 3 percent.
For example, Zidisha is a U.S. nonprofit that launched the first
international person-to-person microfinance lending platform in
2009. Lenders may invest as little as $1 in Zidisha loans and negotiate interest (ranging from 0 percent to 15 percent) directly with
individual loan applicants in developing countries. Kiva may also
be considered an impact investing platform for individual lenders.
Kiva loans do not offer interest to lenders.
Each of us can indeed choose to put our money toward improving our environment whether at home, in the workplace, or the
world in the form of our purchases and our investments.
Lars M. Lewander, president of Spring Water Asset Management,
originally from Sweden, founded the firm on a foundation of integrity,
sustainable growth and social responsibility. He is happy to consult

their values. Visit http://springwaterassetmanagement.com.

Should you
get a massage
after an
injury?
Your guide to making
an educated decision

By Rob Reader

e massage therapists get a

lot of calls from clients who
have been recently injured or
are experiencing pain. Here is a guide to
know when you should or shouldnt get a
massage after an injury.
In all cases of injury, use common sense
and seek the care of a doctor whenever necessary. These are just recommendations and
are given under the assumptions that there is
not a more serious injury involved and that
you have sought sufficient medical care and
advice. With all serious injuries, please make
sure you seek medical treatment to make
sure that nothing is broken or torn. Once
properly examined by a doctor, you can then
seek alternative forms of treatment to help
relieve pain, tension and swelling.
Lets start with the most common injury.
Headaches are very easily treated with
massage, but I am mainly referring to
tension headaches. Relaxing the muscles
in the neck, shoulders, upper back and
head can easily and quickly reduce or even
eliminate headache pain without the use
of drugs. Frequent massage in those areas
can reduce the frequency of headaches and
40

Natures Pathways | November 2014

make your life more pain-free.

Note, though, that in the case
of classic or cluster migraines or
migraines that are the result of vasoconstriction then sudden vasodilation, massage is not recommended at all.
If you sprain or injure a wrist or an
ankle, a massage can help but not necessarily right away. Usually you want to wait
for at least three days to get past the acute
stage and then see a massage therapist to
help loosen up muscles and increase blood
flow into the area. Massage will also assist
with the swelling as the increased blood
flow will begin to remove the extra fluid
from the area. A massage therapist most
likely will not work directly on the injured
area but will work on the muscles leading
into the injured area or connected to the
injured tendons. This takes the pressure
and extra pull off of the tendon and lets it
relax for quicker pain relief and healing.
When dealing with a shoulder injury,
things can get quite a bit more complicated. Just to be sure, it is best to get a
doctor to OK massage if the injury is
extremely severe. Once a doctor has

A massage therapist

the injured area but

muscles leading into
the injured area or

injured tendons.
concluded that massage is not contraindicated (not recommended) then you can
start getting massage to increase range of
motion and strength in the injured area.
Again, an average wait time of at least three
days after the injury is recommended.
www.naturespathways.com

Hip injuries are as complicated as shoulder injuries. Again, make sure nothing is
broken or torn before seeking massage
treatment. Treating an injured hip involves
working on a lot of various muscles that all
can impact the movement of the leg. These
are muscles in the glutes, the upper thighs
and even in the stomach area. All these
muscles work together to make sure the
legs move properly, so when one muscle
is injured or sprained, the others have to
work harder to keep your leg functioning. With some patience and some time,
a knowledgeable massage therapist should
be able to get you back up and walking
pain free.
Massage is contraindicated for 10 days
after receiving a cortisone shot, so please
inform your massage therapist over the
phone if you have recently had or intend to
receive a cortisone shot. You can still get a
massage, just not in the affected area.
Most massage therapists have also been
trained for scar tissue work. Even with
very old scars, a massage therapist can
help soften the scar tissue and increase its
elasticity. Massage can also decrease the
discoloration and size. It will not make the
scar disappear, but will make it look less
swollen. With new scars, the sooner you
start the work the better. Make sure you
get cleared by the doctor after any surgery
before starting treatment.
I hope this helps you make a more
educated decision when it comes to what
a massage therapist can do to help with
injuries or to help you heal in general.
After your doctor clears you for other
treatments, give your local independent
massage therapist a call and schedule an
appointment right away.

Inspiring
chocolates

o you want to feel and look younger as you age? Do you

or someone you know love chocolate? Can you eat chocolate every day, all day?
If the answer is yes, you have found a source for your success!
Kim Hall believes everyone deserves to succeed in wellness and
health. Success is a multifaceted, balanced endeavor for those who
choose to be educated and activated to make healthy choices. The
worlds first healthy chocolate is a catalyst for greater success.
Shifting from burgers and fries to a green smoothie can be a
stretch for many. However, a simple starter step toward better
health may be getting all of those greens through a healthy chocolate shake or substituting the omega-3 pills and receiving the
benefits through a chocolate bar. The cocao bean is a superfood
and indigenous people used it to increase their endurance traveling at great lengths. Adding modern day Zorbmax, a nutraceutical, amplifies the absorption of this superfood and results in
healthier people.
Now imagine giving good through healthy chocolate. So
instead of ordering a pizza, popcorn or wrapping paper to support
your favorite fundraisers, you can now order healthy chocolate
all year long, online, every day, all day and everyone wins. Even
better if that chocolates prescribed by a wellness physician;
some insurance plans have proactive benefits in place to support
you on your quest for better health.
After all, everyone loves to feel good, everyone loves to give good,
so when you can give good and feel good through healthy chocolate its all good. Truly healthier donors become wealthier donors.
Why? Because when peoples health improves, they show up better
in life: productivity improves and peoples purposes shine.
Kims passion is with children and elders. She has a dream that is
a bit like the movies Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and
Cocoon. Providing golden ticket opportunities for children to

be educated and activated to understand and eat true nutrition

through healthy chocolate fundraisers perhaps can contribute to
shifting the rise of diabetes and heart disease in their generation.
For the elders in their golden years, perhaps they can thrive and
their quality of life can improve when they are getting the nutrients they need through healthy chocolate shakes.
Chocolates are simply one source of a multifaceted approach to
wellness Kim includes in her seven dynamic directions of success
treasure chest, which supports people in shifting from medicated
to educated, from educated to activated. Once activated to create
change in their lives, people become liberated and are free to live
in complete harmony.

Does your
integrity
need a
checkup?

By Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW

There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity. Tom Peters

f I had to identify only one value to live by, it would be integrity.

Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. Having the courage to
do the right thing, no matter the consequences, is hard work.
Having integrity today seems like an old-fashioned value; no
one really expects you to have it and many are surprised if you
do! Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it only takes
a second to lose. Think of Lance Armstrong and Ryan Braun! We
seem to be living in a world where the ends justify the means.
People lie or distort the truth to avoid the immediate consequences. We overpromise and under deliver!
Watching the news and following social media today, it sure
seems like people can gain power quickly and easily if they are
willing to cut corners and act without integrity. We can all think
of several examples of people without integrity who are successful
and who win without ever getting caught, which creates a false
perception of what it takes to succeed. However, that person has
now lost their ability to be trusted, with everything they do and
say falling under suspicion.
At times, we may find ourselves wandering off the path of integrity. We know this because we feel stuck, confused or have a hard
time hearing our inner voice.
Does your integrity need a checkup? The single most powerful step
you can take to improve your confidence and power in the world is
to restore and renew your integrity. So how do we step back on track?
How do we become empowered, joyful and clear of purpose?
Start by asking yourself these questions:
How often do you make promises with yourself?
How many of those promises do you keep?
www.naturespathways.com

Do you trust yourself to keep your word?

Do you always mean yes when you say it?
Are you comfortable saying no?
If so, are you direct with your no?
Can others depend on you to keep your word? Always?
In what situations are you most prone to fib, or to withhold or

bend the truth?

Are you prone to gossip or to self-critical statements?

Do you walk your talk, or do you tend to say one thing and

do another?

Do you reserve your most powerful language for building up

people and ideas, or for tearing them down?

Do you have a personal code for knowing when to speak up

and when to keep something to yourself?

Are you true to your values and purpose?

Can you admit and own your mistakes?
Do you fail to do the right thing because no one is watching?

Remember that integrity is the quality of being honest with yourself and others, and living a life that is aligned with your moral
principles. Developing integrity requires examining your beliefs
and value system, and taking conscious steps to behave in ways
that are consistent with your personal moral code. In the end,
living a life with greater integrity pays off with big dividends, such
as increased self-esteem, confidence and personal power.

Carbohydrate
addiction

By Rosalie Misco (Grandma Rose)

any people crave carbohydrates, foods containing

sugar and flour, such as cookies, candies, cakes and
bread and more. If you are one of those people who
have tried time and again to resist the craving for your favorite
carbohydrate food, there is help for you.
When you eat fast-digesting carbohydrates, the sugar- and
starch-containing foods, your blood sugar rises very fast and high.
Insulin is released from your pancreas, causing your blood sugar
to drop quickly. The quick drop of blood sugar is what sets off
your craving for more carbohydrates.
If you stopped eating your favorite foods, the craving would go
away. However, you have tried over and over and found yourself
unable to resist for long enough to break the addiction. Does this
sound familiar? You are not alone.

Natures Pathways | November 2014

You can break the addiction by eating foods that produce a

slow but steady rise in blood sugar, which prevents the sharp drop
causing the craving. This can be done by adding resistant starch
fiber to foods in the same meal as the carbohydrate that causes your
craving. Hi-maize 260 is such a resistant starch fiber and it is easily
added to many foods. Or, you can eat a chocolate truffle containing
the resistant starch fiber immediately after the meal.
Natural Expressions 100% Whole Grain Bakery has Hi-maize
260 and the information for its use in breaking your sugar addiction. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and is located at 825 E. Broadway Drive, Appleton. Rosalie Misco
(Grandma Rose) hosts a free blood sugar and weight loss support
group the first and third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. To register for the free
class or to purchase Hi-maize 260 and mixes containing it, visit http://naturalexpressions1.com or call 920-954-9727.
