About Home Education

Education at home has been the accepted educational method of many cultures past and
present. Being a parent involves educating your child. This is not a right or a privilege from
the state, but a God-given responsibility (Deuteronomy 6 v 5-7, Ephesians 6 v4). Neither the
parents nor the state can actually lay claim to owning
the child only God can own us (Psalm 24 v 1).
However, parents are clearly Gods stewards charged
with the responsibility of educating their own children.
Home schooling involves discharging this responsibility
yourself, rather than delegating it to someone else.
Home education diminished after the introduction
of universally available state education at the end of
the 19th century. It continued in Britain into the 20th
century amongst the wealthy who could afford private
tutors at home (examples of this include CS Lewis and
the Queen). Because of this, the 1944 Education Act
famously allowed for education either at school or
otherwise. Over the last 30 years a modern home
schooling movement has grown up with the parents
taking direct responsibility for educating their children.
However, home schooling is not an end in itself; it is a
means to an end. The end is the faithful discharge of our God-given responsibility to give our
children a Christian upbringing and a Christian education an education based on the conviction
that the Bible is the Word of God.

The Importance of the Family

One of the most interesting aspects of home education is the similarity and diversity found
amongst families that have opted to teach their children in this way.
The most common similarity is the firm conviction that the family can and must be the best
environment for rearing and educating children. It is the most natural thing in the world for a
child to learn and grow within his own family unit.
When we examine the development and growth of young children, it is not difficult to see that
those who are best developed are raised in a stable family relationship. Psychologists tell us
that a child learns most of what is required for human communication and life skills between
the ages of 1 and 5, when the child is in the constant company of his mother.
Parents educating their children at home follow the precept that when something righteous is
working for good, why change it? Since the basic family unit does such a good job on the child
before school age, then common sense might say that it would continue to do a good job later
on.

Why TEACH?
Christian home education using the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum, started in
the UK in the 1980s with a handful of committed, pioneering parents. The number of families
has grown steadily over the years, and there are now over 700 families, representing more
than 1,500 children.
A survey conducted between 1995 and 1996 revealed that, although convinced about Christian
home education, many home schooling parents felt isolated and even discouraged by the lack
of local support from like-minded Christians, and would appreciate regular contact, fellowship,
support, assistance and encouragement from experienced Christian educators, who also homeeducate their children.
To this end, Christian Education Europe Ltd decided to establish TEACH,
a distance learning support organisation.
The European Academy for Christian Home Schooling provides a
comprehensive range of quality services designed to help parents
establish and run a home schooling programme of the highest
quality.
By working with TEACH your family will receive the support
and assistance necessary to fulfil your responsibilities to bring
them (your children) up in the nurture and admonition of the
Lord. Ephesians 6 V4. Under no circumstances will the academy presume to take over this
responsibility.

The TEACH Team

The European Academy for Christian Home Schooling is staffed by a team of highly qualified
and experienced professionals committed to serving your family.
When you call you will be directed to the most appropriate person to deal with your inquiry or
the person responsible for your family file.
As well as the team here in the TEACH office, we have a network of regional managers, district
coordinators and contact families who are available to provide local and personal support and
assistance.

Curriculum Support
A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education)
This academically excellent, individualised Christian education programme, has been used by
thousands of schools and home educators all over the world for more than forty years.
The ACE curriculum provides parents with a quality programme they can trust and enables
parents to monitor the standards and content of their childrens education, from kindergarten
(preschool) to tertiary education. No longer do children have to wait for the rest of the class to
catch up before moving on to the next topic; no longer do children have to feel failures if they
cant keep up, or have special educational needs.
ACE curriculum is designed to meet the individual needs of each child, the emphasis being placed
on learning rather than teaching. Children are taught to take responsibility of their own learning
and are trained with the skills necessary to take initiative and achieve their potential.
This curriculum is Biblically based, and goes from Preschool (4+) through to university entrance
and Adult Education, and is supplied within Europe by Christian Education Europe Ltd It
forms the basis for the International Certificate of Christian Education secondary education
qualification.
3

The prime method of learning is achieved by students working through booklets called PACEs
(Packet of Accelerated Christian Education) in various subjects, reading supplied texts, filling in
blanks in questions, linking words with definitions, writing sentences and short essays, doing
simple experiments, searching dictionaries, solving mathematical problems, using computers,
watching DVDs and in many other ways.
There are frequent short tests throughout each PACE, leading up to the Self Test at the end
of the PACE, where the student assesses his own understanding of the work. If he passes the
Self Test, he will proceed to the PACE Test the following day. If passed, this will demonstrate
mastery of the material. Progression to the next PACE is only permitted when mastery of the
current work has clearly been demonstrated (mastery learning).

The ACE Programme

The ACE Programme covers six core subjects: Mathematics, English, Word Building (spelling),
Literature and Creative Writing, Science and Social Studies along with Bible Reading, Animal
Science and more than 20 options and enrichment subjects.
These, plus many varied events at Student Convention make ACE one of the most diverse and
comprehensive curricula available to home educators.
Each subject is divided up in to bite-sized,
achievable workbooks, called PACEs (Packet of
Accelerated Christian Education). Each subject
consists of 10 or 12 PACEs at each academic
level from preschool to level 12 (year 13).
The PACE is a unit of work that takes two to
three weeks to complete depending on the
ability of the child.
Each PACE has specific learning, goals,
objectives and built-in assessments designed
to ensure mastery of learning and to teach
students effective learning strategies.
At the end of each PACE a student is required to
complete a PACE test. The student must score
a minimum of 80% before being allowed to
continue to the next unit of work.
The PACE forms the basis of the students learning, from which additional learning activities,
projects, assignments, resources and enrichment activities can be built.
While a simple but effective process of completing a PACE is followed, it by no means limits or
restricts the many ways in which this excellent resource can be used to cater for the specific
learning style of each child.

The ACE Programme

Individualization
Each child receives a personal Academic Prescription that allows them to progress at their own
appropriate level and rate of learning. Diagnostic Testing determines the particular learning
needs and requirements of each child while the ACE material allows the parent to give personal
and precise assistance where necessary.

Mastery
ACE provides each child with the opportunity to actually learn the material they are studying.
Mastery learning is essential for educational success. Students do not move onto a new concept
until they have demonstrated that they have adequately learned the immediate material.

Biblical World View

Biblical principles and concepts are interwoven into all aspects of the curriculum. Each student
is taught from a biblical perspective, developing critical thinking skills which enable them to
discern what truly is ...the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Christian Character
The ACE curriculum presents 60 character traits of Jesus throughout the PACE material and
presents role modelling that promotes biblical integrity and Christ-like character. This, along
with the practice and procedures, goal setting and routines, requires both parents and students
to develop Godly character 24/7.

Academic Excellence
ACE curriculum is of the highest academic standard, preparing students for their life vocation
and higher levels of learning. ACE is the only Christian-based curriculum recognised for its
academic competency to prepare students for university.

An Overview of the A.C.E. Programme

Preschool - Kindergarten Programme
Kindergarten with Ace and Christi is a fun-filled, creative programme that prepares children
with the essential and foundational skills for successful literacy and numeracy skills.
It is a one year programme for 3 to 5 year olds and uses a comprehensive range of development
learning activities and high quality resources and materials. The child will also learn social skills,
the wonders of Gods world, and the reality of Gods love.
Step by step instruction manuals make this ideal for the home schooling parent.

ABCs of ACE Learning to Read

Children who score 80% or above on the Reading Readiness Test are ready to learn to read (and
would use the ABCs kit next step up). (Most children below the age of 5 are not physically
ready to learn the skills involved in reading and may benefit more from the Preschool
programme.)
This multi- sensory, phonetic learning-to-read programme is designed to prepare a child for the
individualised instruction of the PACE curriculum. Within a period of 12 to 15 weeks, your child
will learn to read by becoming acquainted with cartoon animals, songs, and stories, which help
him to learn letter sounds, alphabet sequence, and word relationships. Physical and character
development skills are built through poems, displays, and various physical activities. Some
children benefit from taking longer than three to four months.

School Age
Curricula differ in content and in the timing and introduction of that content. Children who
already have done some schooling on another curriculum may not have covered material in the
same sequence as ACE since ACE operates on the basis of mastery learning, not a timetable, it is
important to find out exactly what a new pupil knows, so that any areas where ACE introduces
material earlier can be identified. This is done by giving the child a Diagnostic Test, which will
determine the general level at which he or she should commence, and also identify any gaps in
his or her knowledge that need to be filled with gap PACEs.

Core Curriculum
Six core subjects:
Mathematics
English
Literature & Creative Writing
Word Building
Social Studies
Science
An average child will complete approximately 70+ PACEs a year in total (about 12 14 in each
subject).at lower levels and 60+ PACEs a year in total at higher levels.
Each subject is approached from a sound Biblical standpoint, acknowledging in every area the
authority of the Creator in His Creation.
The vital area of Christian character training is reinforced through the learning of Scripture, a
character trait and cartoons. This character training forms a continuous thread running through
the entire curriculum.

Electives and Expanded Curriculum

From Level 8, the ACE programme offers a wide range of enrichment and option courses
including:
Economics and Business
Foreign Languages
Music
Art
Health Science
Careers
Christian World View

Non-ACE Curriculum
At higher levels, some other curricula such as
Future Kids or Rosetta Stone are recognised
electives (see ICCE list).

ACE Curriculum Resources

Some of the core curriculum and option subjects now use audio, video and computer
enhancement, to complement work completed in PACEs. DVDs are available for purchase
or hire (conditions may apply), covering such subjects as Biology, Physics, Physical Science,
Geometry and Algebra.

ACE Scope and Sequence

The complete curriculum, from Preschool to University entrance, is detailed in the Scope and
Sequence, which outlines the material covered in every PACE in every subject and is available
for review or purchase.

The International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE)

What do you do once your child gets to senior school age?
Do you have to go back to a secular curriculum and work
towards a secular GCSE or A level certificate??

No, you now have a Bible-based, Godly alternative in the

International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE).
This Christian secondary qualification is rapidly gaining acceptance with industries, businesses,
colleges and universities, both here in the UK, and throughout the rest of the world.
Young people registered with the ICCE, and enrolled with TEACH working with the ACE
curriculum, may be awarded one of six levels of Certificate from Basic to Advanced Plus.
Please note: pupils coming late to the Accelerated Christian Education programme, may be
stretched to achieve a higher level certificate.
Further details on the ICCE may be obtained on request from TEACH, or direct from the ICCE
office, both at Maranatha House.

ICCE Comparability
UK NARIC has undertaken a benchmarking project with a view to establishing the comparability
of the qualifications offered by the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE) to
those offered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).
In light of the evidence examined, UK NARIC draws its conclusion that the ICCE and CIE
qualifications are broadly comparable.
Details on the comparability of the individual awards can be viewed in the following tabular
format:

Please note that CIE O Levels are different from GCSEs.

programme in more detail.
The TEACH Office, and Christian Education
Europes warehouse, is situated at
Shrivenham about 5 miles east of Swindon. It is around 15 minutes from junction 15 of the M4
motorway. The nearest train and bus station is in Swindon, which is approximately 8.7 miles
(14km) southwest of us.

them or to call on you.

Parent Training
Here, at TEACH, we are only too aware of how daunting a
task starting your home schooling programme can be.
Most parents feel inadequate and unqualified to meet this
challenge and very often hesitate to commit themselves to
such a major decision.
Our comprehensive, easy to use Home Education
Handbook takes you step by step through how to set up a
successful home schooling programme.
This comprehensive Handbook covers all aspects of your home schooling programme and is
supplied to all families on enrolment.

Enrolling with TEACH

Should you decide to enrol with TEACH you will need to complete and return to us the
following:
1. The TEACH Application for Enrolment Form.
2. TEACH Order form for Parent Training materials & diagnostic tests & payment.

Enrolment Procedures
1. Parent Training
On approval of your application for enrolment we will send you our Parent Training Pack. The
Parent Training will take approximately 20 hours and will take you through, step by step, how to
establish a successful home schooling programme.
It is important that the supervising parent completes the Parent Training and their own Activity
Pac and Test. It is highly recommended that where possible, both parents complete the training
course in order to get the greatest benefit from the programme.
The supervising parent needs to complete and return their training before we can release
curriculum.
NB If you have already completed an ACE training course within the last 3 years you need not
complete the Parent Training Pack if you send us a copy of your previous training certificate.
2. Diagnostic Testing
In order for us to establish where your children fit into the ACE curriculum we need your child
to complete a set of diagnostic tests for each child.
Completing the diagnostic tests is a vital step in determining your childs educational needs and
in prescribing the best programme for them. We will send you the diagnostic testing material
with your Parent Training Pack.
NB If your child/children are transferring from an ACE school they will continue with their
current prescription unless you wish to rediagnose any of your children.
Please ensure a financial clearance reference letter is supplied to us at the time of enrolling
with TEACH thank you.

When to enrol
Families may enrol at any time or level. One of the great advantages of Home Education is the
flexibility it allows. You do not have to follow the state school term pattern although the law
requires the education to be efficient, full-time education . Normal progress needs to be
between 36 and 39 weeks a year.
Your application will be processed as soon as possible, but realistically it will be between 6-8
weeks before you actually have the curriculum and are ready to start. September starts are
popular, making this time of year very busy, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment.
The sequence of events after receiving the application form is as follows:
1. Arrange an interview if you have not had one already.
2. Parent training (and Diagnostic tests, if required, are sent for the child/children if ordered) will
be sent to you, along with your account number and any other information. After the training is
returned, you will receive a certificate.
3. When the Diagnostic tests are returned we will send you the Curriculum Prescription for your
records and we hope to place the first small order on your behalf to ensure you have all that is
required. By this time we hope you will have had an assistance interview.

10 TEACH Prospectus Christian Education Europe Ltd.

Initial Order
To speed up your initial Order, TEACH staff will make your first order when enrolment is completed
and the Diagnostic Tests (if any) are returned... We include all the charts and stickers necessary and
normally the first three PACEs in each subject for your children.

A Final Word
Psalm 1:13

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of
sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Colossians 2:8

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after
the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7) and wisdom (Psalm 111:10).

Ephesians 6:4

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in
thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest
up.
