About the course In recent decades, the role of surface engineering is becoming a widely recognized area for ensuring improved material performance. Majority of failures of engineering components originate from the surfaces and the components deteriorate in service leading to failures due to wear, corrosion, fatigue and oxidation. The success of surface engineering is demonstrated by the application of surface technologies and coatings to a variety of engineering components.
In the present scenario, with the technological advancement and the need to use more sophisticated materials and equipment, industries face increasing problems as how to implement the surface characteristics to be used and to obtain the unique properties of these surfaces at a reduced processing cost. Automotive industries are now aware of the role of such surface modifications to improve the surface characteristics, which will ultimately improve the product performance.
Benefits of attending this course Have an understanding of the concepts of surface engineering as part of the manufacturing process Have a good knowledge of the principles of failure modes like corrosion, friction and wear, including abrasive, erosive and sliding wear, including the selection of suitable coating systems. Have a detailed knowledge of new coating concepts, including multilayered structures and functionally gradient materials, together with examples of their major applications. have an appreciation of have an appreciation of the microstructural characteristics used to describe materials and the techniques used to characterize the surface
Learning objective Focusing on failure modes such as corrosion, wear, friction and fatigue. To introduce the concepts of surface engineering and how it can be used to prevent the failure and optimise the components performance in automotive applications. To introduce the techniques used to evaluate and characterise surfaces.
Course pre-requisites Basic knowledge of Material Science and Metallurgy
Who should attend? Manufacturing personnel, process engineers, design engineers, quality control, technical service, chemists and technical sales personnel dealing with finishing, coating, wear and corrosion prevention will benefit from this program. It is appropriate for current users with limited to very good knowledge of coatings operations, who need or want to learn fundamentals, current trends, and new technologies.
