The SMFI inside BOP valve (BVR) is a heavy
duty check valve installed in the drill string to
control back flows coming from the inside of drill
pipe joints, ensuring a complete protection of the
swivel, drilling hose, stand pipe and circulation
equipment. Once the BVR valve is installed, the
circulation can be resumed for formation control
and/or kick control.
The BVR inside BOP valve is usually used
during tripping as soon as an upward flow occur.
The BVR check valve can be left in the drill
string as long as necessary for kick control. It can
be run in hole through the BOP stacks an integral
part of the drill string
The standard SMFI inside BOP valve will seal
against pressure up to 15 000 PSI. Standard and
H
2
S resistant versions are available to suit
various drilling conditions.
1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
It is important to note that these BVR valves do
not allow a full opening and therefore free
passage of any other component.
The BVR range features five sizes corresponding
to internal parts dimensions, as shown in the
following table.
Internal trim series valve seat ID (in)
1 1 1/2
2 1 3/4
3 2 1/4
4 2 13/16
Based on these sizes, a full range of standard
products has been developed; see paragraph 2.1
operational data for their description.
The BVR check valve sealing is achieved
through a PTFE ring inserted in the valve head
during manufacturing.
All API threads are cold rolled and parkerised.
The BVR range features three different versions:
The standard version which is
suitable for normal drilling
conditions. The valve body is made
of a single piece of AISI 4145 H
modified alloy steel heat treated to
285-341 Brinell hardness and a
minimum impact strength value of
42 J as per ASTM 370 Charpy V
notch at -10C. The body inner
surface is chromium plated to
enhance mud corrosion resistance
and maintenance operation.
The H2S trim version which has
been designed for low H
2
S
concentration. Internal parts are
made of corrosion resistant materials
matching the NACE MR0175
standard (latest edition), fitted in a
standard body.
The full NACE version which fully
meets the NACE MR0175 standard
to resist higher H
2
S concentration.
The body is made of UNS S17400,
heat treated to meet both NACE
standard and API spec. 7 (latest
edition).
2 BVR OPERATION
Modern drilling techniques use light muds with less hydrostatic pressure to improve the rate of penetration
and avoid to damage the formations. Therefore kicks are more likely to happen during tripping.
No other tool than a BVR (inside BOP valve) can be used to seal flowing connections at the rig floor level
and to enable the driller to resume mud circulation and control the down hole pressure.
The valve is always located on the drill floor within easy reach in operating condition and open.
2.1 Operational data
The table below gives the operational data and standard product range description that the driller may need.

2.2 Rig installation
1) Quickly stab the valve into the flowing
connection, spin and make up with rig tongs to
the API torque: sketch 1.
2/ Remove the retaining screw. The valve is
closed: sketch 2.
3/ Remove the upper plug with back up tong on
upper valve body only: sketch 3.
4/ Remove the rod.
5/ Reconnect kelly, power swivel or drill pipe and
resume circulation : sketch 4.
Lubrication while drilling is not necessary.
3 VALVE MAINTENANCE
3.1 Preventive rig maintenance
BVR API rotary shouldered connections are
exposed to cyclic bending and fatigue. As a
consequence, threads have to be taken care of;
i.e. thoroughly cleaning, use of appropriate API
compound, application of the right make-up
torque, regular intervals inspections according to
drilling conditions.
Keep the valve in operating condition on the rig
floor in the open position, at any time.
3.2 Workshop maintenance
We recommend a workshop maintenance of the
valve each time it is removed from the string, or
after each well drilled and finally if corrosive
fluids were mixed with the mud while drilling.
It is important to note that a disassembly is to be
done just after use prior to storage, to avoid
getting seized with dried mud and corrosion.

3.4 Repair kits
In order to simplify the maintenance of our
equipment, three types of kits are available.
Seal kit: includes all parts needed
for replacement each time the valve
is disassembled; i.e. O ring seals.
Standard version (items 9 & 10)
H2S service version (items 9 & 10)
Complete repair kit: includes all
BVR inside valve sealing
components.
Standard version (items 5,6,7,9 & 10)
H2S service version (items 5,6,7,9 & 10)
As the body inner surface is chromium plated, a
used valve with new internal parts will perform
the same service as a new one.
Please specify on orders:
Valve name : BVR
Valve type : (standard or H2S
service)
Connection type, : (NC 26 OD ID - NC 31
OD and ID OD ID, etc.)
Internal trim series: 1 to 4
Type of kit : (seal kit or complete
repair kit)
Kit part number : (see part number table)
3.5 Disassembly procedure
The disassembly procedure is as follows.
1. Remove the plug (item 2).
2. Remove the valve release screw (item 1) from
the plug.
3. Break-up the connection located between the
valve lower and upper bodies (item 4 & 8)
4. Unscrew the valve seat (item 6) from the
valve upper body (item 4).
5. Remove the valve head with insert (item 5)
and the valve spring (item 7) by pulling them
out of the lower valve body.
6. Remove the large and small O rings (item 9
& 10) from the valve seat.
3.6 Assembly procedure
After thoroughly cleaning the internal parts and
the body, carry out a visual inspection of parts.
Lubricate with oil the parts that are to be used for
reassembly, in order to protect them from rust.
All worn out parts are to be replaced by genuine
SMFI parts. See paragraph 3.4 for kits
composition.
Avoid shocks on the seat and on the head fitted
with its PTFE seal.
It is important to check the valve head and
seat for washout. An inspection has to be done
for spring corrosion cracks.
The procedure is as follows.
1. Install O rings (items 9 & 10) in their
grooves.
2. Screw the valve seat (item 6) in place at the
upper valve body pin connection end.
3. Put the valve spring (item 7) in place.
4. Install the valve head with insert (item 5)
with its O ring seal on the valve spring.
5. Make up the API rotary shouldered
connection between valve upper and lower
bodies to a standard make up torque.
6. Screw the valve release screw (item 1) in its
place in the plug (item 2).
7. Put the release rod (item 3) in place with the
tapered section into the valve head hole.
8. Hand tight the plug onto the upper valve body
with the rod in the plug hole. By screwing the
plug, the valve is being opened.
9. OPTIONAL STEP: Proceed to hydraulic test
of the valve in the closed position. See
paragraph 4 for this hydraulic seat test.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: It is important to
check that the release rod has been set in
place during the assembly by looking into
the plug bleeding hole.
3.7 Connections recutting
Recutting of the API connections of SMFI inside
BOP valves is possible, but we highly
recommend no to cut other connections than the
pin at bottom side; recutting the other
connections will necessary impose to adjust the
length of the release rod.
The bottom pin connection will be cut with
respect of dimensions L
mini
or l
mini
as shown on
the following drawing.

4 HYDRAULIC TESTING
Each new Inside BOP valve (BVR) is hydraulic
bench tested according to API spec 7 (latest
edition) and delivered with its individual pressure
record sheets.
The test is carried out in two steps:
a SHELL TESTING during which the valve is
pressurized to the test pressure (see table
below) for 3 minutes, then depressurized and
pressurized again for 10 minutes minimum
without leakage or pressure loss.
a SEAT TESTING during which the valve is
pressurized from the pin end to its working
pressure (see table below) for 5 minutes
minimum without leakage or pressure drop.
PRESSURE TESTING TABLE
Working pressure Test pressure
(PSI) (Mpa) (PSI) (Mpa)
10 000 68.9 15 000 103.4
15 000 103.4 22 500 155.1
For used valve, we highly recommend a seat
testing (at working pressure) after disassembly
and reassembly of the valve as per API spec 7,
section 2, 2.6.2 (latest edition).
5 SPECIAL
RECOMMENDATIONS
Check if BVR and tool joint connections are
compatible
Do not release the screw (item 1) before making
up the connection to the right torque.
When breaking out the release plug, place the
back up tong on the upper valve body and on no
other place.
6 SPECIAL BVR
As internal components size correspond to the ID
of the valve head bore, a standard BVR trim can
fit different bodies accordng to special
requirements such as another type or size of
connection, shorter or longer bodies, larger or
smaller diameters.
SMFI is a major manufacturer of customised
valves to meet any special requirements for these
systems. SMFI will meet any customer's special
requirement subject to engineering department
approval.
