Ill Benjamin Linton Satterthwaite was born 7 - 23 - I8OO
in Burlington Coimty New Jersey, the son of Benjamin and Sarah
( Haines ) Satterthwaite. In the year 1817 Benjamin, his mother ,
sisters, and brothers moved to Warren County Ohio.
They were taken into Miami Meeting 6 - 25 - 1817 on
certificate from Upper Springfield Meeting in New Jersey.
Benjamin was united in marriage at Turtle Creek Warren County
Ohio, on October 3, 1822 to Miss Ruth Evans a native of New
Jersey, and daughter of Joseph and Lydia Evans, born 1801.
They were members of Miami Meetings where their names,
dates, and marriage was recorded in the records book.
They resided on farm and was closely associated with her parents
Joseph and Lydia, and where Benjamin become one of the prosp -
erous farmers in the Township. In I83O or I83I the mother Ruth
died leaving the small children, Sarah Ann born I823, Samuel
Evans born May 30, I825. Benjamin was twice married, the second
marriage was September 12, I832 at Grove, Warren County Ohio, to
Mary Lukens, she was born January 1, IBIO the daughter of Levi
and Elizabeth Lukens.
In 183^ Benjamin his brother Caleb, and son in-law Isaiah
Garwood ventured to Huntington County Indiana where he purchased
land in Jefferson Township. He returned to Warren Coimty and
moved his family, his daughter, son in-law and their family ;
to Huntington County Jefferson Township about the year I838.
They immediately begin to build their home, and at a later
Ri"'
a beautibul country home was built. Much clearing was done and
land made ready for farming. The name Benny become quite familiar,
and he was known in all parts of the country in few years.
He owned over thirteen hundred acres of land located
between Mt Etna and Niptite, later called Pleasant Plains.
Scattered over his plantation was cabins which was occupied
by the'tenants and hired help. He was no tyrant or slave driver
and was respected by the community, but was so eccentric some
people said he was crazy, many wished for enough of the same
brand of insanity to accumelat land and dollars like he was
able to do. Physically he was small man with penetrating eyes
and hair so long it fell to his shoulders.
Politically he was Democrat, religiously he was a Quaker
or better known as Society of Friends, He was always pleased to
travel long distances to speak or give his interpretation of
the gospel. Many speeches were made from stumps, barrels, or ^
decorated wagons which he was always known to be seen in. He
seemed to believe a man of his distinction and possessions
should be seen as well as heard. Six horses decorated with bells
and tossels would pull his two seated carriage to town, always
occupying the front seat was his son Samuel, with Elizabeth in
:the back seat. His wife Mary was in very poor health for many
years and was unable to leave the plantation, she was cared
for by maids in the home. After several years they moved to
Huntington because of Mary health. Mary departed this life 11

Satterthwaite Cemetery
One of Huntington County earliest public burial
grounds was the Satterthwaite Cemetery. The ground deeded by
Benjamin Linton Satterthwaite dated November 23, 1850, section
7 of Jefferson Township. Donated and deeded to be dedicated
forever as public burying ground, never to be sold or conveyed
for any other purpose. The two contiguous graveyards, one for
negro and one for whites. The west section set aside for the
colored who wished to be buried there. Burials were to be made
north and south with space between head and foot, for ones
wishing to mark their loved ones graves with monuments. About
1915 the bodies of Benjamin Linton Satterthwaite, his wife Mary
their grand sons, Orlando, Benjamin T, and Charles N,, Satterth
waite were moved to Mt Etna Cemetery Other bodies were moved,
but a life long resident stated some bodies still remain in the
cemetert today.

Today not distinguishable as cemetery from the road, a high

stock fence encloses the pasture land which includes the burial
grounds. A creek has taken a large portion away, the remaining
area has only one small s^one visible. The ground is covered
with wild myrtle, rose bushes, and prickly ash. One land mark
remains a beautiful big tree with flowing branches which gives
a squeaking sound as they move in the breeze. As one pauses under
the large tree to pay respects to the ones gone on, one can hear
the breeze quietly blowing past this old old tree.
