AutoCAD 2D
Module 37
Text - Part 2

Learning Outcomes:
When you have completed this module, you will be able to:

1. Describe a mtext object and explain how to create, edit and explode it.
2. Describe and apply the MTEXT, QTEXT and SPELL commands.
3. Describe special text characters and the use of control codes.

Multiline Text
Unlike single line text that you learned to use in Module 20, multiline text is a text object that
can contain one or more lines of text. Usually called mtext, it has an editor that inserts and
edits text similar to a word processor. Mtext uses the current text style for its properties just
like single line text does but it allows the font, color and appearance of the text to be changed
even though it is one style.
Mtext can be exploded using the EXPLODE command. When exploded, it creates single line
text and loses all of its mtext properties except the color, height and text style.

AutoCAD Command: MTEXT

The MTEXT command is used to insert one or more lines of text on a drawing. It is a single
AutoCAD object.

AutoCAD Command: QTEXT

The QTEXT command is used to change the display of all text objects on the drawing to
rectangles that represent the location of the text.
Shortcut: none

Font Types
There are two basic font types available in AutoCAD. They are shape fonts and true type
fonts.
Shape Font
A shape font is a compiled font created using vector lines and arcs. The text characters in a
shape font are made from lines and arcs the same as drawings. They are created in a text file,
saved as a shape file and compiled before they can be used in a drawing. A shape file is
saved with the extension .SHP and after it is compiled it is given a .SHX extension. Shape
fonts can be designed and created by the AutoCAD user and is taught in the AutoCAD
Customization Modules.
True Type Fonts
A true type font is a raster font. The text characters in a
raster font are created from dots or pixels. A true type
font does not have an assigned extension.
A Shape Font Verses a True Type Font
When you use the STYLE command and pull down the
list of available fonts in your AutoCAD drawing, the
shape fonts have the extension .SHX while true type
fonts do not have an extension. See Figure 37-1.

The main differences between shape fonts and true

type fonts are as follows: Figure 37-1
1. Shape fonts take much less space in an AutoCAD True Type and Shape Fonts
drawing's data base then true type fonts.
2. Drawings regenerate faster with shape fonts then they do with true type fonts.
3. True type fonts can be assigned to appearances like bolding and italicized while shape
fonts cannot.

Special Text Characters

Not all characters or symbols that you may require on your drawings are available on a
keyboard. These characters are called special characters and to enter them into your text, you
must use control codes.
Control Codes
The control code used by AutoCAD is a pair of percent signs %%. Added before the special
character, AutoCAD's text commands will interpret it differently than normal text characters.
Shape and true type fonts as well as single line and multiline text work differently with special
characters. Therefore, you will have to experiment with the text type and font you are using.

Special AutoCAD Text Characters

Special Purpose Example Results
Character
u underline %%u5 Dia. 39 Degrees%%u 5 DIA. 39 DEGREES
d degrees symbol 39%%d 12' 39/ 12'

did not complete this drawing, do it first before
continuing with this workalong. Your drawing should

anytime it regenerates the drawing, the QTEXT
command is used to speed the regeneration and all
other speed related aspects of working on the drawing.

While the DDEDIT command can be use to edit mtext, a much faster
method is to double click the text. This method will open the mtext editor
displaying the selected mtext ready to be edited.

Mtext can be one or more lines or paragraphs of text that is a single object in
AutoCAD. It uses the current style properties but within the text object the
font, color and other appearance can vary even though it retains the style it
was created in. Mtext can be exploded with the EXPLODE command and
will convert the text to single line text objects.

This tip only works in 2004-2008.

By default, the mtext editor is transparent and you

can see through it to help you see where you are
placing your text. In AutoCAD 2004 and 2005, you
can change it from transparent to opaque by placing
the cursor on the gray strip below the ruler and
clicking the left mouse button. See the figures on the
left. Once you change it to opaque, it cannot be
changed back. You would have to end the MTEXT
command and start over again.

In AutoCAD 2006-2008, click the Down Arrow icon

and enable or disable Opaque Background as
shown in the figure below.

The Key Principles in Module 37

1. Unlike single line text, multiline text is a text object that can contain one or more lines of
text and is one object in the drawing.
2. There are two basic font types available in AutoCAD. They are shape fonts and true
type fonts. Shape fonts are vector fonts and true type fonts are raster.
