Safety recommendations
Never dismount a bearing from a tapered seating by means of the
Oil Injection Method without having an hydraulic nut or an SKF
locking nut screwed onto the shaft end.

SKF TMDS 9

1. Description
For a bearing to function properly and to last, it is important that the
correct mounting method and the suitable tools are being used. Care
should also be exercised with regard to cleanliness. Mounting should,
whenever possible, be carried out in a clean and dust-free room and not
in the immediate vicinity of dust producing machines. If the bearing is to
be re-used, dismounting must be conducted with the appropriate care.
SKF has developed methods that simplify mounting and dismounting of
bearings and also eliminate almost completely the risks of damaging
these precise machine elements.
This demonstration unit can be used for presentation of various
methods including the SKF Oil Injection Method. The use of the SKF Oil
Injection Method saves considerable effort and avoids unnecessary
damages to the parts.
The demonstration unit is used to show the following:

Connect the slide hammer, extract by throwing the hammer towards the
handle.

SKF TMDS 9

6. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 2

6.1 Mounting bearings 7308 BECBP on shaft no. 2
Mounting bearings with cylindrical bore can best be done by
heating them. Bearings should be heated about 80 to 90C above
the temperature of the shaft, but should never exceed 125C. To
handle the hot bearings, use clean gloves (TMBA G11) or clean
lint-free cloth.
Heat both angular contact ball bearings on the Induction Heater
TMBH 1. When both bearings has reached the desired temperature,
push them, one by one, in back-to-back arrangement onto the shaft
without misalignment. Press the bearing inner rings against the
abutment face of the disc until an interference fit is obtained.

6.2 Dismounting bearings 7308 BECBP on shaft no. 2

Place bearing puller TMMA 3 around the disc behind both angular
contact ball bearings 7308 BECBP and release the spring of the puller.
Dismount both bearings by means of the puller.

SKF TMDS 9

6. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 2

6.3 Mounting ball bearing 6308 on shaft no. 2
Heat ball bearing 6308 with Induction Heater TMBH 1, as described in
point 6.1. When the bearing has reached the desired temperature, push
it onto the shaft without misalignment. Press the bearing inner ring
against the abutment face of the longer
intermediate ring until an interference fit is obtained.

6.4 Dismounting ball bearing 6308 on shaft no. 2

Place bearing puller TMBS 50 behind ball bearing 6308 according
to the instruction of the tool and dismount the bearing.

10

SKF TMDS 9

7. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 3

7.1 Mounting bearing 21312 E/C3 on shaft no. 3
Heat spherical roller bearing 21312 E/C3 with Induction Heater
TMBH 1, as described in point 6.1. When the bearing has reached
the desired temperature, push it onto the shaft against the abutment
face until an interference fit is obtained.

7.2 Dismounting bearing 21312 E/C3 on shaft no. 3

Place bearing puller TMMA 3 around spherical roller bearing
21312 E/C3 and release the spring of the puller and tighten the
puller by hand. Connect high pressure pipe with adapter on the shaft.
Connect the quick connection nipple to the adapter and connect pump
729124 SRB to quick connection nipple and pump oil between bearing
and bearing seat until oil escapes at the end of the contact surface all
around the shaft. While pumping, dismount the bearing by means of the
puller.

SKF TMDS 9

11

8. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no.4

8.1 Mounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 4
During drive up the original radial clearance of the bearing is reduced.
The easiest and best way of mounting spherical roller and CARB
bearings is with the help of the SKF Drive-up Method.
Carefully read the step by step
mounting procedure of MP512
(Accurate axial drive-up of
spherical roller bearings).
Determine whether one or two
surfaces slide during mounting.
Lightly oil all mating surfaces with
a thin oil e.g. SKF LHMF
300 and carefully put the bearing
on the shaft. Rotate the outer ring
a few times to allow the rollers to
assume their correct positions.
Drive the bearing up to the
starting position by applying the
HMV 12E-nut pressure found in
the table. Monitor the pressure
by the gauge on the SKF
Hydraulic Pump 729124 SRB.
Drive the bearing up the taper to
the required distance from the
axial drive-up starting position.
This is monitored by the SKF Dial
Indicator TMCD 5P, which can be
put into the hole of the HMV
E-nut.
Remove the hydraulic nut after
mounting and screw the shaft nut
KM 12 to locking washer MB 12.
Return the piston of the hydraulic nut in a vice, having pump 729124
SRB (with open release valve) still connected. The oil will flow back into
the pump.

12

SKF TMDS 9

8.2 Dismounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 4

Connect pump 729124 SRB via
quick connection nipple 729100
to the shaft end. By pumping oil
into the oil duct and distribution
groove, an oil film will appear
between bearing inner ring and
shaft. Release the oil pressure by
turning the release valve at the
pump. Use hook spanner HN 12
to loosen and remove shaft nut
KM 12 and locking washer
MB 12. Rescrew the shaft nut so
far that a gap of about two
coarses of the thread is left
between the bearing and the nut. Tighten the release valve of the pump
again and build up a new oil film between bearing inner ring and shaft.
The bearing will simply be shot off from its seating with force and
without damaging the seat.
NOTE: Never dismount a bearing from a tapered seating by means of
the Oil Injection Method without having an hydraulic nut or an
SKF locking nut screwed onto the shaft end.

SKF TMDS 9

13

9. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 5

9.1 Mounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 5
The tightness of the fit between bearing, adapter sleeve and shaft
depends on how far the bearing is pressed onto the tapered seat. Push
the distance ring and the adapter sleeve onto the shaft. Then push the
spherical roller bearing onto the adapter sleeve until the abutment face
of the distance ring is reached. Screw hydraulic nut with piston facing
the bearing onto the adapter sleeve. For mounting the spherical roller
bearing 21312 follow the instructions described in point 8.1. Place the
locking washer and screw on the sleeves nut. Press the piston of the
hydraulic nut back, as described in point 8.1.

9.2 Dismounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 5

Remove the sleeves nut with hook spanner HN 12 and take away the
locking washer. Then screw the hydraulic nut onto the adapter sleeve, so
that the piston is directed away form the bearing. Screw the hydraulic
nut only so far that a gap of about two courses of the thread is left
between the bearing and the nut. This gap is required to move the
adapter sleeve so far that the bearing gets detached from the adapter
sleeve. Screw the support nut on the shaft until it is in contact with the
hydraulic nut piston. Pump oil into the hydraulic nut with pump 729124
SRB, and the bearing will slide from its seat. Press the piston of the
hydraulic nut back, as described in point 8.1.

14

SKF TMDS 9

10. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 6

10.1 Mounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 6
The tightness of the fit between bearing, withdrawal sleeve and shaft
depends on how far the bearing is pressed onto the tapered seat.
Therefore, it is necessary to measure the radial clearance of the
unmounted spherical roller bearing. Place the bearing upright and rotate
the inner ring a few times to allow the rollers to assume their correct
positions. The clearance is measured, using the feeler gauge 729865 A,
between the outer ring and the uppermost rollers.
After determination of the radial clearance (values of General
Catalogue), the spherical roller bearing is pushed manually on the shaft
until the abutment face of the distance ring is reached. Push the
withdrawal sleeve under the bearing as far as possible. Screw on lock
nut KM 10 by the Lock Nut Socket TMFS 10 until the bearing is pressed
far enough on the withdrawal sleeve. This is the case when the required
reduction is obtained.
Since the bearing is positioned on the shaft, the clearance is now
measured between the lowest rollers and the outer ring.
Remount shaft locknut KM 10 to locking washer MB 10. Finally, check
again the clearance of the bearing.

10.2 Dismounting bearing 21312 EK/C3 on shaft no. 6

Unscrew the KM 10 Lock nut and take away the locking ring MB 10 from
the shaft. Screw Lock Nut KM 13 on the withdrawal sleeve using the HN
13 spanner. Use as much force as needed to dismount spherical roller
bearing 21312 EK/C3.

SKF TMDS 9

15

11. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 7

11.1 Mounting self-aligning ball bearing 1209 EKTN9/C3
on shaft no. 7
Take the shaft out of the holder. Place adapter sleeve H 209 over the
shaft. Place self-aligning ball bearing 1209 EKTN9/C3 and locking
washer MB 9 over the adapter sleeve. Hand tighten the assembly with
locknut KM 9. Place the shaft and bearing assembly in its holder so that
the bearing assembly fits in its housing. Tighten the nut according to the
instructions of the TMHN 7.

11.2 Dismounting self-aligning ball bearing 1209 EKTN9/C3

on shaft no. 7
Unlock locknut KM 9 a few turns. Gently hammer against the
dismounting adapter which is placed against the bearing inner ring, so
that the bearing will slide from the sleeve. The bearing assembly is loose
now and can be taken away.

16

SKF TMDS 9

12. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 8

Shaft no. 8 will show the big differences in dismounting forces between
ball bearing 6212, which will be dismounted without Oil Injection
Method, and ball bearing 6214, which will be dismounted with Oil
Injection Method.
12.1 Mounting ball bearing 6214 on shaft no. 8
Mounting bearings with cylindrical bore can best be done by heating
them. Bearings should be heated about 80 to 90C above the
temperature of the shaft, but should never exceed 125C. To handle the
hot bearings use clean gloves (TMBA G11) or clean lint-free cloth.
Heat ball bearing 6214 on the Induction Heater TMBH 1. When the
bearing has reached the desired temperature, push it onto the shaft
seat without misalignment. Press the bearing inner ring against the
abutment face until an interference fit is obtained.

SKF TMDS 9

17

12.2 Dismounting ball bearing 6214 on shaft no. 8

Place bearing puller TMMA 3 around ball bearing 6214 and release the
spring of the puller. Connect high pressure pipe with adapter on the
shaft. Connect the quick connection nipple to the adapter and connect
pump 729124 SRB to quick connection nipple and pump oil between
bearing and bearing seat until oil escapes at the end of the contact
surface all around the shaft. While pumping, dismount the bearing by
means of the puller.

12.3. Mounting ball bearing 6212 on shaft no.8

Ball bearing 6212 should be mounted the same way as ball bearing
6214 (see point 12.1).
12.4. Dismounting ball bearing 6212 on shaft no. 8
After shaft and bearings are cooled down, place bearing puller TMMA 3
around ball bearing 6212 and pull the bearing off.

18

SKF TMDS 9

13. (Dis)Mounting procedures for shaft no. 9

13.1 Mounting bearing NU 2212 ECP on shaft no. 9
Slide away inner ring from bearing NU 2212 ECP and heat it with
Induction Heater TMBH 1, as described in point 12.1. When the ring has
reached the desired temperature press it against the abutment face of
the shaft until an interference fit is obtained.

13.2 Dismounting bearing NU 2212 ECP on shaft no. 9

Take away cage and roller assembly. Coat the inner raceway with an
oxidation resistant oil, which can stand heating. Heat aluminium ring
TMBR NU2212EC to temperature of approx. 280C by means of a hot
plate or an open fire. (An ordinary kitchen hot plat can do this job). Place
the aluminium ring round the bearing inner ring and press the handles
together. Wait for a short time, then try to rotate the tool with ring until it
comes loose from the shaft, then pull it off. Carefully open the handles
and take away the bearing inner ring.
