National Bookstore is known to be one of the countrys largest bookstores and offices
supply store chain in the Philippines. The company will not be able to reach this level if it
werent for the efficient implementation of the four functions of management, namely, planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling. In my opinion, National Bookstore did, and still continues
on doing, a great job in planning. This can be traced back when the late Jose Ramos and his wife
Socorro Cancio-Ramos managed to sustain their business amidst the censorship enforced by the
Japanese during the Second World War which gave them no choice but to stop selling books and
instead sell soaps, candies and slippers. Effective planning can be observed in National
Bookstore with its countless advertisements in the tri-media as well as the implementation of
membership cards which allows cardholders to receive complimentary rewards.
National Bookstore was also, and still is, effective in the organization of the company.
According to Education Portal, organizing determines how a company will distribute resources
and organize the employees according to the plan. National Bookstore still manages to
distribute the items they sell throughout their branches. Shortage in supplies can be present but
still National Bookstore is able to comply. This is due to the fact that the system is able to
compensate the queries made by the orders of the employees as well as the customers in their
online shopping site. In addition, National Bookstore cannot last this long (70 plus years) if it
werent for the managers connecting with the employees on an interpersonal level. From what
I see every time I visit a National Bookstore branch, I see the employees always trying to reach
out their hand to the customers who are having a hard time finding the thing they are looking for.
Even the managers stoop down to the level of the subordinates upon seeing that same kind of
customer. For this reason, there are little, if not none at all, reports of mistreatment of employees
in the company.
Lastly, evaluation is an important part for the employees to rate the leadership provided
by the managers. National Bookstore for me deserves to receive high rating in management
because of the unwavering service they provide. It would not be possible if managers were not to
do some corrections in their leadership style. This goes to show that the employees are showing
honesty in their work as well as in professing their comments towards the managers, and in turn,
the managers prove that they are worthy of their positions as leaders in the company.
On the efforts of reducing the carbon footprint and the trees used for paper production,
National Bookstore now implements the no use of plastic bags for carriage of purchased items.
Also it now has an online shopping site on their website where customers can buy some of the
items and is able to be delivered on their doorsteps.
