Externally connected hardware compatibility can be determined by investigating the hardwares compatibility with Windows Server 2008 R2. If a hardware component or device is supported by Windows Server 2008 R2 (e.g. drivers, etc.) then it is also
supported by Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. HP support for those devices is limited to the normal support for the specific device.

The System Recovery process checks for various parameters while determining if the process can continue. Two of the parameters that are checked are the System, or operating system, logical drive size and the RAID level for the logical drive. These
parameters are used differently for different recovery system versions:
The restore DVD will restrict the operating system logical drive minimum size (it must be at least as large as the factory default) and it will restrict the RAID level. Any RAID level other than RAID-0 will be allowed.
The factory default logical disk size is 60GB.
The minimum logical disk size recommended for all Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 systems is 60GB.
NOTE: If a systems operating system has been modified from the factory default and the System Restore process does not allow the restore process to complete because of the changes, the only remedy is to backup any important data and remove the
logical drives using the SmartArray controller POST user interface (e.g. Press F8 during POST when appropriate).

By license, an application that is not directly associated with storage, storage management, or platform management is not allowed. A single exclusion to this rule is the DHCP server role. Although the Network Storage Systems are based on Windows
Storage Server 2008 R2, software compatibility can be determined by the softwares compatibility with Windows Server 2008 R2.

Hyper-V (# of supported VMs)

On clustered systems, when installing Hyper-V VMs they are created as highly available VMs. When one node fails, the VMs are moved to the second node. If the other node also has VMs running then the total number of VMs may exceed the VM limit
and fail.

SAS connectivity is used for direct attached storage including disk and tape devices. There are no additional protocols other than SCSI used over a SAS physical connection. SAS connected devices include but are not necessarily limited to the following
devices. Device compatibility should be verified by confirming that the device is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.
NOTICE: While devices can be connected, full support of those devices may be limited. For example, the P212 SmartArray controller in an X1600 G2 can only control a total of 54 disks of which 12 can be internal to the system.
Fiber channel connectivity is used for direct attach storage but more commonly with SAN connected gateway servers. The most common protocol used on FC links is the fiber channel protocol, or FCP. Fiber channel connected devices include but are not
necessarily limited to the following devices. Device compatibility should be verified by confirming that the device is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.

USB is a ubiquitous interface capable of up to 4.8Gb/S (USB-3). Current server hardware implements USB-2 which is capable of 480Mb/s. The most common protocol used for USB is the USB protocol. Other protocols are being developed for special
applications but are not supported. While it is common to use USB for such devices as flash drives or temporarily connected external hard drives or DVD drives (e.g. for backup or recovery) it is typically not used in the mainstream. USB connected devices
include but are not necessarily limited to the following devices.
Device compatibility should be verified by confirming that the device is compatible with the running (or equivalent) operating system.
RDX disk storage

Tape storage

Supported tape devices can be determined from the EBS Compatibility Matrix. Compatibility is determined by first determining what backup software is supported for a particular server, and then determining what tape devices are supported by that
software.

CIFS/ SMB

2.0

2.0

2.0

2.0

The CIFS (SMB) protocol has been used by Windows since Windows 3.11. It is the primary protocol used for file sharing by Windows systems. A new version of SMB (SMB2.0) was introduced with Vista and Windows Server 2008. The new SMB2.0
protocol affords much improved performance when moving files between SMB2.0 systems (e.g. Vista to an X1000 G2 or X3000 G2 system).
NFS

NFS (Network File System) is a protocol that was originally supported in Windows NT 4.0 using the add-on Services for UNIX package. NFS has been improved since then and is included in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. The Windows NFS
implementation supports NFSv2 and NFSv3. Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 no longer includes the user name mapping service that was present in Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. User mapping is now accomplished by using Active Directory or the
UNM service on a different server. HP is in the process of developing an easy to use ADLDS solution for the X1000 G2 and X3000 G2 systems. In the mean time, one can refer to the Microsoft Knowledge base article 973840 for more information.
FTP
FTPS
HTTP

By default the HTTP server (IIS7.0) is enabled on the X1000 G2 and X3000 G2 products to provide HTTP or HTTPS access to the file system. By license, the products cannot be used as general purpose web servers but web based applications whose
purpose is to provide access to or manage the storage are acceptable.
HTTPS
NCP (Novell)
WebDAV

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is another access method that uses HTTP as the underlying protocol to afford file system access to WebDAV enabled clients. An example of a WebDAV-enabled client is Windows itself in the
form of web folders. WebDAV is not installed by default on the X1000 G2 or X3000 G2 products. More information about configuring WebDAV in IIS7 can be found here - http://www.iis.net/extensions/WebDAV.
AFP (Apple File Protocol)
NDMP

Network Data Management Protocol support is not native to the X1000 G2 and X3000 G2 series systems. Agents that support this protocol are available from third parties however.

Best practices suggest utilizing a separate iSCSI LUN for each mail store. Furthermore, higher performance RAID levels are suggested for the underlying storage array for the Exchange transaction logs. To this end, it is advisable to create a single iSCSI
target per exchange server and then present the iSCSI LUNS through that single target. The underlying storage is typically configured as RAID-5 for the mail storages (e.g. mailboxes and public folders) and RAID1+0 for the logs. If an X1000 G2 system is
used, it is recommended that the Automated Storage Manager be used to provision and connect the storage to Microsoft Exchange servers as it follows best practices and eliminates the need to interact directly with the Array Configuration Utility and the MS
iSCSI Target management interface.
Microsoft SQL Server

SQL Server is similar to MS Exchange in that the transaction logs should be stored in a separate LUN from the database files and that the log LUN should be stored on a higher performance array. In fact it is so similar that one could apply the same
description so it will not be repeated here. And as with Exchange, using Automated Storage Manager is preferred over configuring storage for the SQL application server manually.
Backend Storage

There are many instances where iSCSI is a good solution for backend storage. Examples include:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Clustered file system prototyping
Virtual machine storage (e.g. Citrix, VMware, Hyper -V

iSCSI Cluster Storage

Using iSCSI for shared storage is supported on MSCS clusters whose cluster nodes are running Windows Server 2003SP1 or higher. There is limited support for MPIO configurations that is fully documented in the Microsoft Storage Server Blog http://blogs.technet.com/storageserver.
iSCSI Gateway

Both the X1000 G2 and X3000 G2 products can be used as iSCSI gateways. The iSCSI initiator can be used to take advantage of iSCSI LUNs presented from iSCSI storage devices including MSA2000i and P4000 SAN solutions. The LUN that is
presented to the storage system can then be used to host shared folders or even other iSCSI targets (although this is not recommended for performance reasons). Hardware iSCSI initiators can also be used to improve performance.

Automated Storage Manager (ASM)

Automated Storage Manager is a rebranded version of All-in-One Storage Manager and provides the
same functionality. ASM 4.2 includes various bug fixes over the previous version. Important
considerations include:
HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring (SWSM) is no longer supported by ASM.
ASM does not manage or use IPv6 addresses
ASM can now create and manage GPT volumes greater than 2TB

The X1000 G2 series products are intended to provide standalone storage utilizing internal and
directly attached MSA JBOD enclosures. Other external storage options can be utilized but
management of these other storage devices is not supported in ASM. ASM will manage all aspects of
storage (e.g. from bare drives to an iSCSI LUN presented to an Exchange server) if that storage is
connected to a SmartArray controller. ASM will ignore any storage that is not connected to a
SmartArray controller.
