II CLASS TEACHERS OBSERVATION REFLECTION

1. What went well?

In accordance to my perspective the class was taught well, and students were
able to use the target language effectively throughout the majority of the
activities. Students were actively participating, especially during the relating
professions to public places activity (The teacher showed them pictures cards
and the students said the name of the public place and profession). Additionally,
students behaved appropriately and were really relaxed throughout the lesson.
Everything went according to plan and the sequence of the activities was well
done. I really enjoyed the effort put on by my students since they are not quite
used to being observed it does become a little tough for them to cope with the
extra attention, but they pulled through and were able to perform well.
2. What did not go so well?
I must admit that dealing with children is a complicated process because
grasping information in a foreign language is a tough challenge. From my
perspective and my observers perspective there seemed to be some shyness
during the fifth activity which dealt with a writing-interview task. Moreover, this
activity involved students to write a question and then to interview another
student about the question which became challenging because of the shyness.
It has happen before when observers come to observe this group, they seem to
get a little intimidated and lose confidence since they are afraid of making
mistakes. I think it has to do a lot with the way these children were brought up in
their rural communities, they tend to be quite shy around people they dont
know, and it becomes somewhat intimidating for them to break the ice.
Furthermore, I noticed that there were some copying issues during some of the
activities, and it became pretty relevant during the fifth activity as when a
student wrote something wrong the rest of the pupils followed the same pattern
and wrote it incorrectly as well.
3. What were your lesson objectives?
The primary targets were properly achieved as it was expected, that the students
were able to recycle professions and public place vocabulary, and that they
would be able to relate this to their personal life which was effective.
Furthermore, the learning environment was quite fun and challenging for
students and they were able to do well in terms of getting the work done.
Finally I felt that the productive skills were well performed as well, and students
had a sense of purpose throughout the lesson. I think I really created a sense of

purpose with the professions and now these students have a more optimistic
perspective in terms of what they want to be when they grow up.
4. What would you do differently if you were to teach this lesson again?
I would definitely have to modify activity five since it was quite challenging for
them due to their shyness. I would probably substitute it with a game so that
students could write, but at the same time have a sense of fun. I think maybe a
rally could work really fine since they are extremely competitive. Additionally, I
would like to work on my grouping techniques in order to reduce the copying, so
maybe assigning the writing a little different and putting some copying locks
would be much more effective.
5. What were your personal/professional aims?
I would certainly read up more on how to better exploit the activities and get
more production from my students, and I would also like to work on some
techniques on shyness, so I plan to get some feedback from more experienced
teacher. Finally, I would like to follow up on the professions activity and maybe
have them do a project by having them interview some successful professionals
from the city of Dolores Hidalgo which will get them more connected with the
context and break the shyness.
6. In view of your learning experience in this lesson, and your observation of your
students, what will your next step be? What will you do in the next lesson?
Like previously mentioned I will work really hard to reduce student shyness by
paying attention to my grouping techniques and having more challenging
activities that really can challenge their teamwork. I would also work on
reducing the copying by assigning different tasks.

7. Identify areas for your own on-going professional development as a teacher

I think, I consider that some work could be done in concerns with my teacher
language in order to get students attention in order to have better control in
terms of classroom management. In addition, I have to get my students to break
the ice when someone observes and avoid intimidation and by providing better
grouping and assigning tasks that are less challenging in terms of writing would
definitely help. Finally, these observations have been totally helpful for my
teacher development since the feedback has definitely given me the opportunity
to teach more effectively and I am growing a lot.
