D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser
(D-Ward 4) won election as mayor Tuesday
night by defeating fellow Council member
David Catania (I-At-Large) by a margin of 54
to 35 percent, with former Council member
Carol Schwartz (I) nishing a distant third with
7 percent of the vote.
Most political observers have said Catania,
whos gay, waged a hard-fought campaign that
turned the citys general election for mayor
into a rare competitive race. In a city with
an overwhelmingly Democratic electorate,
a Democrat has won the mayoralty in every
election since the start of the citys rst home
rule government in 1974.
Catania, a former Republican who has
served on the Council for 17 years, along with
his highly committed supporters, argued that
the citys electoral dynamic had changed,
making it possible for him to be the rst nonDemocrat as well as the rst white and openly
gay person to win election as D.C. mayor.
Catania and his supporters also argued
that he was the most progressive of the three
main candidates.
But Tuesday nights results appear to
conrm that despite an inux of as many
as 60,000 new mostly young adult residents
in the city since the 2010 election, many of
whom have registered as independents, the

REPUBLICAN ROUT
What does GOP Senate takeover mean for LGBT issues?
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
When the polls closed on Tuesday, the Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate made clear that advancement of LGBT
rights in Congress is a lot more complicated if not totally on ice.
Shortly after 11:20 p.m., the Associated Press reported Republicans won control of the Senate presumably clearing
the way for Sen. Mitch McConnell to become Senate Majority Leader by picking up seats in Iowa, North Carolina,
Colorado, Arkansas, West Virginia, Montana and South Dakota. Additionally, Republicans picked up seats in the House.
Gregory T. Angelo, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, said the GOP gains will be a test for LGBT groups
on whether theyre willing to work in a bipartisan fashionin the 114th Congress.
This is really a time of choosing for LGBT advocates on the left, Angelo said. Do you support the left agenda, or

Hogan stuns Brown in historic Maryland race

Republican ran on
economic issues,
opposes trans law
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
COLLEGE PARK, Md. Republican Larry
Hogan on Tuesday scored a stunning upset
in the Maryland gubernatorial race by
defeating Lieutenant Gov. Anthony Brown.
With nearly 100 percent of precincts
reporting, Hogan defeated Brown by a
52-47 percent margin.
Hogan easily defeated Brown in
Alleghany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore,
Calvert,
Caroline,
Carroll,
Cecil,
Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford,
Kent, Queen Annes, St. Marys, Somerset,
Talbot, Washington, Wicomico and
Worcester Counties. The Republican
who was a member of former Gov.
Bob Ehrlichs administration beat his
Democratic rival in Howard County by a
52-47 percent margin.
Brown defeated Hogan in Prince
Georges County by an 84-15 percent
margin and in Baltimore City by a 7522 percent margin. The lieutenant
governor also beat his Republican rival in
Montgomery and Charles Counties by a
62-37 percent margin and 52-47 percent
margin respectively.
What a historic night in Maryland,
Hogan told supporters in Annapolis as
the Washington Post reported. They said
it couldnt be done here in Maryland. But
together, we did it.
Brown ocially conceded to Hogan
shortly after midnight before addressing
stunned supporters at the University of
Maryland in College Park.
Tonight we fell short of our campaign
goal, said Brown.
A CBS News/New York Times/YouGov
poll conducted between Oct. 16-23 found
Brown ahead of Hogan by a 51-38 point
margin, but other surveys indicated the gap
between the candidates had narrowed.
A WPA Research poll conducted between
Oct. 26-27 noted Brown was ahead of
Hogan by a 44-39 percent margin. A
separate survey from WPA Research found
the lieutenant governor was ahead of his
Republican rival by only two points.
Brown throughout the campaign
highlighted his support of marriage
rights for same-sex couples. He also
backs Marylands transgender rights
law that took eect on Oct. 1, noting to
the Washington Blade during multiple
interviews he testied in support of it in
March during a state House of Delegates
committee hearing.
Equality Marylands early endorsement
of Brown raised eyebrows among
some state LGBT rights activists who

Lieutenant Gov. ANTHONY BROWN

lost despite high-prole support from
Democratic heavy hitters like Hillary Clinton
and Michelle Obama.
Republican LARRY HOGAN won by a 52-47 margin on Tuesday.

noted lesbian state Del. Heather Mizeur

(D-Montgomery County) was among
his main rivals in the Democratic
gubernatorial primary. Attorney General
Doug Gansler claimed the advocacy
group traded its endorsement of the
lieutenant governor for his support of
thetrans rights bill.
Both Equality Maryland and Brown
dismissed that claim.
Hogan told the Baltimore Sun ahead of
the June primary that he opposes the trans
rights law. He said during an interview on
News Talk with Bruce DePuyt in August
that his position on marriage rights for
same-sex couples had evolved, noting
he would not seek to repeal the states
gay nuptials law that voters approved in
a 2012 referendum.
Hogan largely avoided social issues
during the campaign, focusing on the
economy and taxes.
Hogan has some of the best message
discipline Ive ever seen in a candidate,
Walter Olson, a fellow at the Cato Institute,
told the Blade on Tuesday. He ruled
social issues o the table, announced
he was running an economic issues
campaign and stuck to that despite every
attempt by his opponent and a few
on his own side to change the subject
back. Brown never managed to hang the
intolerant social issue millstone around
Hogans neck, though he tried and tried.
Carrie Evans, executive director of
Equality Maryland, did not immediately
respond to the Blades request for
comment on the election results.
Dana Beyer, executive director of
Gender Rights Maryland who backed
Mizeur in the primary, described Hogans
victory as pretty stunning.

There is no functional Republican

party in many populous parts of the
state: No Elizabeth Warren candidates,
no progressive, populist passion so no
inspiration, Beyer told the Blade. Youve
got to stand for something.
Political observers noted throughout
the campaign that Brown would have
expanded upon outgoing Gov. Martin
OMalleys record if he had succeeded
him in Annapolis.
Gay state Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County) told the Blade
after Brown conceded to Hogan that he
feels the lieutenant governors loss is not
a repudiation of OMalley.
Theres a frustration if you look
around the country in a variety of
places there were incumbents who
lost, said Madaleno, noting incumbent
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett also lost
on Tuesday. You have all sorts of unusual
things happening all over the country.
People seem to be dissatised and they
were taking it out on whoever they could.
I wouldnt blame this on Martin at all.
Madaleno also said he hopes he
and other out state lawmakers can
nd common ground with Hogan on
combating homelessness among LGBT
youth, ghting HIV/AIDS and health care.
If we take him on his word that he
wasnt going to go backwards, then well
nd common ground, Madaleno told the
Blade. If he wants to try to attack our
community we will ght back.

LGBT lawmakers re-elected

attorney general.
As attorney general, I will ght for
justice each and every day, said Frosh in a
statement. I will use the full force of the law
to keep people safe in their neighborhoods,
protect consumers from nancial scams
and abuse, provide equal opportunity
for all Marylanders and ensure that every
person in our state has clean air to breathe
and clean water to drink. I will work hard
every day to be the peoples lawyer.
Democratic Congressman John Delaney
narrowly defeated Republican Dan
Bongino in Marylands 6th Congressional
District. Incumbent Congressmembers
Andy Harris, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger,
John Sarbanes, Donna Edwards, Steny
Hoyer, Elijah Cummings and Chris Van
Hollen easily won re-election.
State Comptroller Peter Franchot won
re-election after defeating Republican
William Campbell.
Madaleno and out state Dels. Luke
Clippinger (D-Baltimore City), Anne
Kaiser (D-Montgomery County), Mary
Washington (D-Baltimore City), Bonnie
Cullison (D-Montgomery County) and
Maggie McIntosh (D-Baltimore City) all
won their respective races.
David Moon and Will Smith will represent
House District 20 in Annapolis after Mizeur
and state Del. Tom Hucker (D-Montgomery
County) announced they would not seek
re-election. Maric Morales, an aide to
state Sen. Roger Manno (D-Montgomery
County), won her bid to replace outgoing
state Del. Sam Arora (D-Montgomery
County) who voted against marriage rights
for same-sex couples in 2012.
Gay state Del. Peter Murphy (D-Charles
County) defeated Tom Desabla to become
Charles County Commissioner President.

Warner claims victory in surprisingly tight race

Democrat appears to
overcome GOP wave
to eke out a win
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The victory Sen. Mark Warner claimed
on Tuesday in his bid for re-election to
the U.S. Senate stands in stark contrast
to the overwhelming Republican wave on
Tuesday night, but even this race was a
surprise nail-biter after the polls closed.
Its perhaps the narrow margin of his
presumed victory in addition to the
GOP wins that popped up across the
country that prompted Warner to strike
a tone inclusive of Republicans during
his speech that night at the DoubleTree
Crystal City Hotel in Arlington.
You know the thing that we are seeing
all across the country is that people are
tried of politics as usual, Warner said.
They recognize and why I think we were
successful tonight is that at the end of
the day they want to hire folks to go to
Washington that can work across party
lines and that can actually put the peoples
business rst. And you have given me that

U.S. Sen. MARK WARNER (D-Va.) won reelection in Virginia to the U.S. Senate.
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

chance to go back and continue that ght.

Among the initiatives that Warner
said he plans to pursue in his upcoming
term may well t with the agenda of the
new Republican majority in the Senate,
such as reducing the nations decit
so the country doesnt leave the next
generation with $17 trillion in debt.
On stage with Gov. Terry McAulie
and other senior Democrats in the state,
Warner also talked bread-and-butter

issues like passing a transportation bill

and ending sequestration on the budget in
addition to alleviating student loan debt.
At no time during his speech did Warner
bring up LGBT issues, but he campaigned
in support of same-sex marriage
throughout the course of his election.
As of Wednesday morning, the race
was too close to call and no ocial winner
was declared by major media outlets.
Warners opponent, former Republican
National Committee chair Ed Gillespie,
reportedly had yet to concede the race
and was still awaiting a recount.
But speaking to the audience Tuesday,
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), said Warner was
leading by 15,000 votes, which is enough
to declare victory for the Democrat.
Warner carried a lead against
Gillespie by slightly more than half of
a percentage point. With nearly all the
precincts reporting the next day, Warner
had claimed 49.06 percent of the vote
compared to the 48.49 percent won by
Gillespie while Libertarian candidate
Robert Sarvis took 2.45 percent.
It wasnt supposed to be this close. Prior to
Election Day, polls showed Warner cruising
to re-election by as much as double digits.
But after polls in Virginia closed at 7 p.m.,

no immediate winner was announced, and

in fact early returns showed Gillespie with a
lead. Not until the more populous precincts
in Northern Virginia were counted was
Warner presumed the winner.
That made Virginia an oasis of blue
amid the sea of red generated by
Republican wins throughout the country.
The party picked up at least seven seats
in the Senate, governors oces in the
Democratic states of Maryland, Illinois,
Massachusetts and Maine and in the
House, the GOP was projected to have its
largest majority since 1930.
But during the event, Kaine said
Virginias federal delegation re-elected
in 2014 would remain exactly the same
because no Democrat lost an election.
Despite the status of Hillary Clinton
as the prohibitive favorite as the next
Democratic
presidential
nominee,
Warners strength amid the Republican
wave may cause some to give him new
consideration if not on top of the ticket,
than as the vice presidential nominee.
We still have work in front of us, Warner
said. I promise I come out of tonights
election energized, red up and ready to
go. Lets make sure we get our country
headed back in the right direction.

Gay D.C. attorney slain in Dominican Republic

Van Teasley praised for work
on behalf of LGBT clients
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

A prominent gay D.C. defense attorney
who provided legal representation to lowincome gay and transgender clients and
worked on court-appointed cases at the D.C.
Superior Court was found bound, gagged
and strangled in his vacation apartment in
the Dominican Republic on Oct. 30.
Authorities in the capital city of Santo
Domingo told the Washington Post and
the Dominican Republic press that local
police found D.C. resident Van Teasley,
55, dead in his apartment in an upscale
neighborhood with the door open and no
signs of a forced entry.
Police were investigating the death as
a homicide and did not indicate whether
they determined a motive for the crime.
He was known to be a fair and very
good attorney, said transgender activist
Earline Budd, who noted that Teasley
represented many clients she helped
through her past work with Transgender
Health Empowerment, a local group
that provided services for D.C. area
transgender residents.

Budd and local trans activist Sherri

Meeks, both of whom now work for the
local group Helping Individual People
Survive (HIPS), said Teasley was gay and
represented some of HIPS transgender
and gay clients in addition to his regular
work
representing
clients
before
theSuperior Court.
He was a very prominent person in the
LGBT community, Meeks told the Blade.
He was a very nice man and he served as a
mentor to LGBT people in substance abuse
treatment programs, according to Meeks.
He was instrumental in getting me
clean and sober, shesaid.
In 2008, Teasley testied before a City
Council committee on the issue of hate

crimes targeting LGBT people in the

District. He called on city ocials and D.C.
police to more aggressively address hate
crimes against all people.
People who know him say Teasley
has represented clients before the D.C.
Superior Court for more than 25 years.
He has been praised for his thorough
work in defending people charged with
assault and drug-related oenses along
with other crimes in cases where the
court appoints him to represent people
who cant aord to hire a lawyer.
The Post reported that on Monday
at the courthouse one judge called for
a moment of silence for Teasley while
another judge praised him as a very ne

and talented lawyer.

According to the Associated Press, one
of Teasleys friends in Santo Domingo
contacted police after Teasley didnt
respond to phone calls and didnt answer
his door bell. Another friend told Channel
4 News that Teasley arrived in Santo
Domingo last Thursday, Oct. 30, and was
scheduled to return to the U.S. on Nov. 4.
Tom Donahue, who has rented an
apartment from Teasley in Southeast
D.C. since earlier this year, called him a
wonderful landlord who owned several
rental properties in dierent parts of the
city. He said Teasley lived with his mother
in a house he owned on the 1300 block of
G Street, N.E.
Donahue criticized speculation by
people posting messages on social
media that Teasley could have been
killed by someone he picked up at a
gay bar or another gay meeting place in
Santo Domingo. Teasleys death follows
the recent murder of a Dominican
transgender woman.
To speculate on what happened before
the police investigation is completed is not
fair to him or his family, Donahue said. It
could be someone who followed him and
got into his apartment. Whatever it was,
this is a man that should be respected. It
doesnt matter how it happened.

While I have never denied my sexuality,
I havent publicly acknowledged it either,
until now, he wrote. So let me be clear:
Im proud to be gay, and I consider being
gay among the greatest gifts God has given

Cook wrote that being gay has given
him a deeper understanding of what it
means to be in the minority and provided
a window into the challenges that people in
other minority groups deal with every day.
Its made me more empathetic, which
has led to a richer life, he said. Its been

Equality Virginia to honor Ralph Northam

NORFOLK, Va. Equality Virginia on Saturday will honor Lieutenant Gov.
Ralph Northam and his wife during its annual Hampton Roads gala.
Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and Mrs. Pam Northam believe that nobody should
be discriminated against for their sexual orientation or gender identity, and have
been vocal in their support of LGBT equality in Hampton Roads and beyond,
said the statewide LGBT rights organization on its website. Their eorts for
making Virginia a more welcoming and supportive place to live is inspiring and
their warmth and humanity contagious.
Ralph Northam last November defeated Chesapeake minister E.W. Jackson.
The former state senator from Norfolk was among those who spoke at a
rally after U.S. District Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen struck down Virginias
constitutional amendment that had dened marriage as between a man and
a woman.
Marriage equality and equalitys for all people, Ralph Northam told the Blade
last November. Its just the sensible way to go in my view.
Equality Virginia will also honor Hampton Roads Pride during the event that
will take place at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel.

Brittney Griner attacked in China

SHENYANG, China Lesbian WNBA player Brittney Griner suered a cut to
her elbow on Nov. 3 after a man attacked her in China.
The Associated Press reported the man followed Griner and her teammates
onto their bus in the city of Shenyang. She told the news wire the incident left her
with a small cut on her elbow, but the two jackets she was wearing prevented
further injury.
I was thinking I was going to end up stabbed in China and if he got to us at
the back of the bus, I was going to have to ght this man with a knife, Griner
told the Associated Press.
Griner told the Associated Press the man who attacked her and another
teammate was either mentally ill or very drunk.
The Phoenix Mercury drafted Griner in 2013 after she led Baylor University to
a NCAA title the year before.
The incident took place a day before Griner and her teammates defeated a
womens basketball team in Shenyang.

MIKE MICHAUD lost his race for governor of Maine.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

Michaud falls short in

bid to make history
Gay gubernatorial
candidate loses to crazy
Tea Party incumbent
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The state of Maine rejected the opportunity
on Tuesday to vote into oce for the rst
time an openly gay person as governor.
In a race where polls were tight right up
until Election Day, Democratic candidate
Mike Michaud, a six-term member of
Congress, lost to incumbent Gov. Paul
LePage, a Tea Party Republican seeking a
second term.
The Associated Press declared LePage
the winner at 1:47 a.m. With 62.35 percent
of precincts reporting, LePage won 47.7
percent of the vote, while Michaud won 44
percent and independent candidate Eliot
Cutler won 8.4 percent, according to the AP.
During his 12 years in Congress, Michaud
took pro-LGBT positions, such as voting for
Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal and against
a Federal Marriage Amendment. (He also
voted against a version of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act because it didnt
include transgender protections.)
LePage, on the other hand, was dubbed
the craziest governor in the United States
by Politico. Since taking oce, hes praised
global warming, said that, 47 percent of
able-bodied people in the state of Maine
dont work, and told the NAACP to kiss
my butt. The governor also criticized the
public school system in his own state,
saying, If you want a good education, go
to private schools.
When
Michauds
gubernatorial
campaign was gearing up last year, he
came out as gay in an op-ed published
in Maine newspapers in November 2013

just days before a Senate vote on ENDA.

Michaud
said
he
made
the
announcement, which made him one of
nine openly LGB members of Congress,
to put an end to whisper campaigns,
insinuations and push-polls about his
sexual orientation.
Although he was running against a
Tea Party Republican, Michauds sexual
orientation didnt emerge as a negative
in his campaign. The only criticism
came from supporters of Cutler, who
faulted Michaud for voting against nondiscrimination protections for LGBT
peoplewhen serving as state legislator in
Maine from 1981 to 1997.
Michaud had the backing of major
players in the Democratic Party ahead of
his election. First lady Michelle Obama
stumped for the candidate at a campaign
rally at the University of Maine in Bangor.
That wasfollowed by a later event at the
Portland Expo withPresident Obama, who
said Michaud believes America is a place
where no matter what you look like, where
you come from, what your last name is,
who you love, you can make it if you try.
Michaud had the backing of national LGBT
groups as he pursued his gubernatorial bid,
including the Human Rights Campaign and
the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, in addition
to support fromthe statewide LGBT group
Equality Maine.
But his race was under the radar
for many in the LGBT community. In a
September article titled, Gay donors
missing history in Maine, Politico
reported that Michaud advanced in his
bid with precious little help from the
nations most elite LGBT donors and

SEAN ELDRIDGE
CLAY AIKENcame up short in his bid for a U.S. House seat.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

Aiken a runner-up in bid for Congress

Gay singer and American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken found himself in a
familiar position on election night second place in his failed bid for a House
seat in North Carolina.
Aiken, a Democrat, lost to Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.), the incumbent
representing the states 2ndcongressional district, according to The Hungton
Post.
Aiken was always considered a long-shot in the heavily Republican district
despite his celebrity status. His campaign was further hampered by his
fundraising eorts, which earnedmixed reviews.
In a prole piece in the Washington Post, Aiken also made distracting
remarks by saying he doesnt feel sorry for celebrities whotake nude pictures of
themselves that are leaked, reportedly sayinganybody who takes inappropriate
pictures of themselves deserves exactly what they get.
Although the Human Rights Campaign had endorsed his candidacy, the Gay
& Lesbian Victory Fund, which endorses candidates with reasonable chances of
winning, didnt issue an endorsement.
The Washington Blade rst reported Aikenwas actively considering a bid for
Congress prior to hisannouncement in February that he would pursue the seat
in North Carolina.
Aikens campaign played out like a soap opera. When Aiken narrowly beat
his opponent, former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, by 369
votes in the Democratic primary, Crisco vowed to seek a recount. But Aiken
was declared the winner before a recount could be tabulated afterCrisco died
suddenly from a fall at his home at age 71.
Had Aiken won his bid for a congressional seat, he would have been the rst
openly gay person in the South to serve in Congress. Known for his humanitarian
eorts during his career as a performer, which includes being a national
ambassador for the United States Fund for UNICEF, Aiken also dabbled inLGBT
advocacy after coming out as gay in 2008.
In 2010, the singer appeared at a brieng on Capitol Hill on behalf of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Networkto urge passage of anti-bullying legislation
with LGBT protections known as the Student Non-Discrimination Act and the
Safe Schools Improvement Act.

Carpetbagger Eldridge
loses bid for N.Y. seat
A gay congressional candidate who
helped usher in marriage equality in New
York lost his bid on Tuesday for a U.S.
House seat.
Sean Eldridge, who was vying to
represent the states 19th congressional
district, lost his bid to unseat incumbent
GOP Rep. Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.). According
to Politico, Eldridge called Gibson to
concede shortly after 11 p.m.

Eldridge, who married Facebook cofounder and billionaire Chris Hughes,

played a role in the legalization of
marriage equality in New York, serving as
communications director at the time for
the LGBT group Freedom to Marry.
But Eldridge faced accusations of
carpetbagging on the campaign trail
and invoked the ire of the media for
avoiding interviews. In terms of LGBT
issues, Eldridge was running against a
Republican who co-sponsors ENDA.
According to campaign nance reports,
Eldridge poured more than $1 million of

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

his own money into his congressional

campaign. At the same time, he faulted
his opponent for taking the majority of
his money from special interest political
action committees.
Gregory T. Angelo, executive director
of the Log Cabin Republicans, was
among those expressing satisfaction with
Gibsons re-election.
Despite pouring millions into a
campaign to convince voters otherwise,
the savvy voters of New Yorks 19th
Congressional District saw Sean Eldridge
for what he was: a carpetbagger, plain
and simple, Angelo said. Chris Gibson
isnt just one of the best Republican allies
the LGBT community has in the House
of Representatives; hes also a genuine
person who cares about the people of his
district. At the end of the day, the voters
saw that, and voted for a candidate who
truly represented them.

were just beginning to trickle in, but

already showed a lead for Moulton.
According to MassLive, with only 15
percent of precincts reporting, Moulton
led Tisei, 54-43.
The race was contentious in the LGBT
community because Tisei was set to
vote for Republican leadership if he had
prevailed. Many gay Democratic activists
urged support instead for his Democratic
opponent.
Tisei had the backing of Log Cabin
Republicans and the Gay & Lesbian Victory
Fund. The Human Rights Campaign didnt
issue an endorsement in the race.
Had Tisei won, he could have been
one of the rst non-incumbent openly
gay Republicans to win election to
Congress and one of the rst openly gay
Republicans to serve in the U.S. House
since the retirement of former Rep. Jim
Kolbe (R-Ariz.) in 2007.
But Tisei wasnt the only gay Republican
on the ballot in this election. Carl DeMaio,
a former San Diego Council member, was
seeking to oust incumbent Rep. Scott
Peters (D-Calif.). That race remains to
close to call.

A gay Republican candidate lost on

bid for a competitive U.S. House seat in
Massachusetts.
Richard Tisei, a former Republican
leader in the Massachusetts State
Senate, lost his bid for the states 6th
congressional district to Democrat Seth
Moulton. According to Bostons WBUR,
Tisei called Moulton to concede around
9:25 p.m.
At the time he conceded, the numbers

Maura Healey, a Democrat who
currently serves as assistant attorney
general, was declared the winner in
her bid to become the Massachusetts
attorney general against Republican
candidate John Miller. According to the
Boston Globe, Miller conceded to Healey
around 10:16 p.m.
In her position as assistant attorney
general, Healey had a lead role in the
states litigation against Section 3 of
the Defense of Marriage Act. In April
2012, she argued against the law, which
prohibited federal recognition of samesex marriages, before the U.S. First Circuit
Court of Appeals.

do you actually support equal rights for

Americans? Those who fall in the latter
category are going to be the ones who
are going to be come to the table with
Republicans and nd solutions, ways to
pass things, like employment protections
for LGBT individuals, that also reach
consensus among Republicans.
Angelo said hell meet with Log
Cabins board of directors in January
to discuss priorities, but one area of
interestfor whichhes seen a tremendous
appetite among Republicans
on
Capitol Hill even if theyre not on
board with other pro-LGBT initiatives
is confronting human rights abuses
againstLGBT people overseas.
One
bill
that LGBT
advocates
may continue to push is the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act, legislation that
would bar employers from engaging in
anti-LGBT bias in the workplace. Theres
also interest in a comprehensive civil
rights bill, which has been endorsed by
the Human Rights Campaign, which would
institute LGBT protections in employment,
public accommodations, housing, credit,
education and federal programs.
But Republican control may put the
kibosh on those bills in the upcoming
Congress, let alone versions of the
legislation sought by LGBT advocates that
would narrow the religious exemption
along the lines of Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964.
Je Cook-McCormac, senior adviser to
the pro-LGBT Republican group American
Unity Fund, nonetheless said he sees a
way forward if anauthentically bipartisan
strategy is applied.
Instead of being contentious, were
going to have to meet Republican
legislators where they are and engage in
thoughtful conversations about the time
in which they have the level of comfort
to move legislation forward, CookMcCormac said. I think it presents both
new challenges and new opportunities for
the movement to advance these issues.
An important part of this strategy, CookMcCormac said, is making sure Republican
members are carrying bills of interest to
the LGBT community in consultation with
Democratic allies in Congress.
With regard to advancing the ball
forward on an issue that garners
broad bipartisan support like nondiscrimination, I think there will be
an increasing level of interest, CookMcCormac added.
Even with Democratic control of the
Senate, the current Congressdidnt yield
much pro-LGBT legislation. A version of
ENDA passed the Senate on a bipartisan
basis last year, but the House Republican
leadership never brought up the measure.

Anti-gay group pledges

GREGORY T. ANGELO, executive director of

the Log Cabin Republicans, said theres GOP
interest in confronting human rights abuses
against LGBT people overseas.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

The one exception to the inaction on

LGBT legislation was reauthorization of
the Violence Against Women Act, which
included non-discrimination protections
for victims of domestic violence based on
sexual orientation and gender identity.
Jerame Davis, executive director of
the LGBT arm of the AFL-CIO known as
Pride at Work, predicted more of the
same inaction on LGBT legislation when
Congress reconvenes in January thanks
to Republican victories on Election Day.
I think it means more gridlock and no
movement on LGBT issues in Congress,
Davis said. Weve been, as you know,
waiting for something akin to the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act to
pass Congress for over 30 years and with
a Republican-controlled Senate, were
not likely to see movement. In fact, the
last time that ENDA made any movement
was in the Senate, and the Republican
takeover means that bill is certainly dead
in that house of Congress.
With
movement
on
proLGBT legislation in question, advocates
may be looking elsewhere in arenas other
than Congress to advance LGBT rights.
That includes action from Obama,
whom advocates are pushing to lift the
ban on transgender service in the U.S.
military, and the courts, which are still
issuing decisions on marriage equality
and may soon interpret existing civil
rights law to bar workplace discrimination
based on sexual orientation.
Davis said LGBT advocates will
increasingly turn to state legislatures to
act on initiatives if federal pro-LGBT bills
continue to languish in Congress.
Labor contracts protect LGBT union
workers even in states with no legislative

One fear is that Republican control of

Congress could lead to passage of antiLGBT legislation, much like the Federal
Marriage Amendment that was brought
up for a vote, but failed, the last time the
party had majorities in both chambers
of Congress during the administration of
George W. Bush.
While the rapid growth in support
for marriage equality makes such an
amendment unlikely, anti-gay groups
may push for some kind of federal
religious exemption bill that would
allow individuals or ocials to opt
out of facilitating same-sex marriages
throughout the country.
In an email blast to supporters on
Monday, Brian Brown, president of the
National Organization for Marriage,
said immediately after the election his
organization will be meeting with the
newly elected to discuss the upcoming
term and what bills need to be advanced
to protectmarriageand religious liberty.
The plans, Brown said, include organizing
fora 2015 March forMarriage.
Cook-McCormac said he doesnt think
anti-gay legislation along these lines will
come up based on the Republican lack of
interest in moving such bills in the House
during the current Congress despite
control of the chamber.
I think there will still be reluctance
by Republicans, as weve seen over the
past two years in the House to advance
legislation that in any way rolls back
recent gains for LGBT Americans, CookMcCormac said. Most Republican elected
ocials recognize that any eorts to turn
the clock back on freedom for LGBT
individuals is something that is extremely
unpopular with the American people.
That forecast for anti-gay bills is
bolstered by recent history in Arizona,
where Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a turn
away the gay bill that would have enabled
businesses to discriminate against LGBT
people following amedia frenzy after the
Arizona Legislature passed the bill.
Moreover, any anti-gay bill that comes
up in the Senate could be subject by
minority Democrats to libuster, which
would take 60 votes to overcome. These
billswould also be likely voted down by proLGBT members of the Republican caucus,
such as marriage-equality supporters
Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.)
and Susan Collins (R-Maine). In the event

that anti-gay legislation somehow passes

Congress, LGBT advocates would look to
President Obama for a veto.
Fred
Sainz,
vice
president
of
communications for the Human Rights
Campaign, said his organization views
new Republican members of Congress as
an opportunity to educate and change
hearts and minds.
LGBT equality isnt a partisan issue,
Sainz said. After all, LGBT people are born
to all sorts of parents. Were just as likely
to be born to conservative Republican
Baptist parents from Mississippi as we
are to liberals from New York City. So
its incumbent on us to reach out to
individuals who well hope to turn into
allies and advocates.
The uncertainty about the upcoming
Congress may also mean Democrats will
take the opportunity of the lame duck
session to move forward with pro-LGBT
legislation while they remain in control of
the Senate. Now that the election has taken
place, lawmakers are due back in D.C. on
Nov. 12 to nish their current session.
One idea sources close to ENDA have
articulated is attaching the measure to
a larger bill in the Senate, such as to the
scal year 2015 defense authorization
bill, to ensure it reaches Obamas desk.
Cook-McCormac
said
Republican
supporters of ENDA have considerable
interest in seeing ENDA passed in the lame
duck through onevehicleor another, but the
limited timeline and few remaining mustdo items in Congress to which ENDA could
be attached present challenges.
I think that its a little early to tell what
the prospects are for something like that,
but I do believe that over the next week,
week-and-a-half, were going to have a
much clearer idea of the type of things
that might be possible in the lame duck,
what the window looks like, and what
types of eorts will be necessary to help
that move forward, Cook-McCormac said.
Angelo said hes hearing mixed
messages on whether passage of ENDA
is a possibility during the lame duck
session of Congress.
Im hearing Democrats in the Senate
are hesitant to attach ENDA to something
like NDAA reauthorization, and Im
hearing Republicans in the House are
leaning toward attaching ENDA to NDAA
reauthorization, Angelo said.
Angelo identied Rep. Chris Gibson
(R-N.Y.) as an ENDA supporter who
would be open to passing ENDA as an
amendment to the defense authorization
bill, and Sen. Je Merkley (D-Ore.) as a
Democrat who did have an appetite
for such a strategy. Their oces didnt
respond to the Washington Blades
request for a comment on the issue.

Bad night for gay, lesbian candidates in D.C.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

long-standing electoral dynamic remains

in place with Democrats continuing to
dominate the political landscape.
Most LGBT activists, whose support
was divided between Catania and Bowser,
agreed that non-LGBT issues would likely
be the deciding factor in the race since
each of the three main candidates were
strong supporters of LGBT equality.
Bowsers LGBT supporters were quick to
point out that her campaign manager, Bo
Shu, is gay as is her brother, Marvin Bowser,
who served as her campaign liaison to the
LGBT community. Like Catania, Bowser had
a large contingent of LGBT people serving as
volunteers on her campaign.
This campaign did not end the way
we had hoped, and so I want to begin by
saying to Miss Bowser congratulations
on a well-run race, Catania said in his
concession speech.
In addressing several hundred people at
the Long View Gallery on 9th Street, N.W.,
Catania said he knew from the beginning
that he was waging an uphill ght.
Citing his key issues of improved public
education, marriage equality, healthcare
and aordable housing, among others,
Catania urged his supporters to continue
to push for those issues.
But the important thing is to ght,
he said. The important thing is to
acknowledge the signicance of the
struggle and to show by example that we
never give up, he said.
Added Catania, And my last request
from each of you is to take that spirit of
never giving up and oer your service to our
new mayor so that she succeeds, because
when she succeeds we all succeed.
In her victory speech before a packed
house at the Howard Theater less than a
mile from where Catania spoke, Bowser
praised Catania for a hard-fought campaign
and called on all city residents to join her in
her quest to move the city forward.
Im humbled and Im grateful standing
here as the next mayor of my hometown,
Bowser told the cheering crowd. Im
standing here like so many of you on the
shoulders of all of those that sacriced so
that we may be here, she said. I stand
on their shoulders and I take the great
responsibility of doing my best every day
and never letting them down.
Bowser and Catania each won nine of
the 18 precincts believed to have large
concentrations of LGBT residents and
which the Washington Blade monitors in
mayoral elections. Catania won by margins
greater than 10 percent in precincts in
neighborhoods that include Dupont Circle,
Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, the 14th and
U Streets, N.W. corridor, and one of two
precincts in the Logan Circle area.
Bowser won by a narrow margin in

one of the Logan Circle precincts but

won by lopsided margins in precincts in
Columbia Heights, Shaw, the Southwest
waterfront, Anacostia, Ledroit Park and
Bloomingdale.
Bowser, meanwhile, won in Wards 1, 4,
5, 7 and 8. Catania won in Wards 2,3 and 6.
In other city races, seven openly gay
or lesbian candidates lost their contests
for an at-large City Council seat, the citys
newly elected attorney general position,
and the Ward 1 seat on the citys Board
of Education. In each of these races, the
opposing candidates expressed strong
support for LGBT rights, shifting the focus
of the campaigns to non-LGBT issues.
Gay Libertarian Party candidate Bruce
Majors, who was one of three lesser
known candidates running for mayor,
received 989 votes, which came to less
than 1 percent of the total vote. He
nished behind Statehood Green Party
candidate Faith, who received 1,176 votes
and ahead of community activist Nestor
Djonka, who received 364 votes. Djonka
dropped out of the race and endorsed
Bowser three weeks before the election,
but it was too late for the election board
to remove his name from the ballot.
Lesbian activist and government aairs
company executive Courtney Snowden,
an independent, lost her bid for one of
two at-large City Council seats up for

grabs in a 15-candidate race. Snowden

nished in fth place with 6 percent of
the vote, far behind D.C. Council member
Anita Bonds (D-At-Large), who won reelection by coming in rst place with 24
percent of the vote.
Community activist and former
journalist Elissa Silverman, also an
independent, nished second with 12
percent of the vote, putting her over
the top to win the second of the two
seats. Silverman received strong support
from LGBT activists when she ran
unsuccessfully for an at-large Council
seat two years ago.
Snowden received endorsements from
the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and
the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and
received a +10 rating from the Gay and
Lesbian Activists Alliance, the groups
highest possible rating. She and fellow
candidate Robert White received the
endorsement of the Washington Post.
Her loss means the D.C. Council will be
without an openly gay member for the
rst time since 1997, when Catania rst
won his Council seat. Catania gave up
that seat to run for mayor. Gay Council
member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who
won election to the Council in 1998, lost
his re-election bid in the citys Democratic
primary in April. Like Catania, he leaves
the Council on Jan. 1.
Similar to Silverman, who beat
Snowden, community activist and public
relations rm executive Brianne Nadeau,
who defeated Graham in the primary, is a
strong supporter of LGBT rights.
Gay Republican and Ward 1 civic activist
Marc Morgan nished in 9th place in the atlarge Council race with 3 percent of the vote.
In the attorney general race, lesbian
activist and attorney Lateefah Williams,
a Democrat, nished last in a vecandidate race, receiving 7 percent of
the vote. Attorney and former law rm
executive Karl Racine, who also received
the endorsement of the Washington Post,
won the race with 37 percent of the vote.
Attorney and former law rm partner
Edward Smitty Smith, who won the
endorsement of the Stein Club, nished
second with 19 percent of the vote.
Gay public education advocate David
Do nished a close second in a vecandidate race for the Ward 1 D.C. school
board seat, losing to former teacher
Laura Wilson Phelan by a margin of 29
percent to 25 percent for Do.
A second out gay candidate in the
race, Scott Simpson, nished third with
12 percent of the vote. Simpson works
as press secretary for the Leadership
Conference on Civil and Human Rights
and received the endorsement of the
groups leader, Wade Henderson.
The remaining out gay candidate,
Libertarian Party member and community

activist Martin Moulton, lost his bid for

the citys shadow U.S. Representative
seat. He came in third place in a threecandidate race with 6 percent of the
vote. Democratic and Latino community
activist Franklin Garcia won the race with
64 percent of the vote.
In other city races for City Council seats,
seats on the school board in Wards 3, 5
and 6, the shadow Senate seat, and the
citys non-voting delegate to the U.S.
House of Representatives, long held by
Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton, all
of the winners are strong supporters of
LGBT equality.
In terms of the LGBT community, I
think the government is going to continue
with the progressive politics that its
pursued over the last decade, said LGBT
supportive Council Chair Phil Mendelson
(D-At-Large), who won re-election
Tuesday night by a lopsided margin.
The Council continues to be committed
to equality for everybody, and I dont see
any change there, Mendelson told the
Blade at Bowsers election night gathering.
Some Catania supporters, while
agreeing that Bowser is a friend of the
LGBT community, said Catania would
have been a more outspoken and
aggressive supporter of on LGBT issues.
Others expressed disappointment that
more LGBT people didnt vote for Catania.
Im sad with the results and I feel like
perhaps the community didnt stand with him
like we should have, said Paul Guequierre,
the former deputy communications director
for the Human Rights Campaign.
I think we turned our back on one of
our own because he doesnt have a D
behind his name, he said.
Gay
Democratic
activist
Peter
Rosenstein, who supported Bowser, is
among the LGBT activists that believes
Bowsers aliation with the Democratic
Party shows shes more in tune with their
own political views.
Muriel Bowsers big win is a statement
by the people that they want to continue
the progress that we have been making
in our city and believe it can best be done
by a progressive Democrat, Rosenstein
said. It is a win for a candidate who has
the skills to unite our city.
Veteran gay activist Bob Summersgill,
former president of the Gay and Lesbian
Activists Alliance, said there were no
surprises in Tuesdays D.C. election.
All of the LGBT candidates lost. None
were expected to win, he said. There
were too many gay-friendly candidates,
and no one running anti-gay. There were
also no big gay issues, he said.
Consequently, LGBT supporters were
all over, backing dierent candidates for all
sorts of reasons, Summersgill said. This
is very positive and shows the maturity of
our community and our politicians.

Matthew Shepards death still really hard for parents

Dennis, Judy Shepard
speak out at LGBT
conference in Mexico
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
MEXICO CITY Dennis and Judy
Shepard sat attentively at the Benjamin
Franklin Library in Mexico City on Oct.
30 as LGBT children and their parents
shared stories about their experiences
in the Mexican capital. Cast members
of a local production of The Laramie
Project, advocates with Mexicos version
of the It Gets Better campaign and those
aliated with local PFLAG chapters also
attended the event the U.S. Embassy in
Mexico coordinated.
It was a lot of sharing of stories, it felt
like a support group, Judy Shepard told
the Washington Blade during an Oct. 31
interview with her husband. It was very
emotional last night. They had beautiful
stories to share.
The Shepards spoke with the Blade during
the International Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans
and Intersex (ILGA) World Conference that
took place in Mexico City last week.
They took part in an Oct. 30 panel on
families at the ILGA World Conference in
which Tushar Malik, an Indian LGBT rights
advocate who is a former Human Rights
Campaign fellow, took part. Judy and
Dennis Shepard earlier in the day spoke

with students, teachers and parents at a

Mexico City high school.
In a country like Mexico where theyre
just starting out on their journey to
accept the gay community publicly, we
try to broaden the message to include all
kinds of discrimination and bullying, said
Judy Shepard.
The Shepards trip to Mexico is
their latest trip abroad with the State
Department.
They spoke to the Blade earlier this year
from Trinidad and Tobago where they met
with U.S. Embassy ocials and local parents
and attended a screening of The Laramie
Project at a local university. The Shepards
then traveled to Jamaica where they
attended a second screening of the play.
The couple since 2012 has traveled

to Singapore, Taiwan, Sweden, Poland,

Latvia, Estonia and Hungary. The
Shepards later this month are scheduled
to attend a lm festival in the Russian city
of St. Petersburg where the lm Matt
Shepard is a Friend of Mine is scheduled
to be shown.
Dennis Shepard during the interview
noted Mexicos anti-discrimination law
includes sexual orientation and the
countrys federal government is using
that right now to try and force equal
rights for the gay community.
Same-sex couples have been able to
legally marry in Mexico City since 2010.
The Mexican capitals comprehensive
anti-discrimination law includes both
sexual orientation and gender identity
and expression. Mexico City Mayor Miguel

ngel Mancera has proposed allowing

the citys trans residents to legally change
their name without a court order.
The Shepards both acknowledged
Mexican advocates continue to face
challenges in spite of recent advances in
Mexico City, noting the dierences towards
homosexuality and other LGBT-specic
issues between Denver and Wyoming.
You go from Denverto Wyoming,
which is so rural and theres no diversity,
said Dennis Shepard. Youre not
educated in the true facts.
You dont even have to leave Colorado
to nd that, added Judy Shepard.
She added she hopes her son would
be proud of the advocacy eorts she and
Dennis Shepard continue to do in his name.
Dennis and Judy Shepard traveled to
Mexico City roughly three weeks after the
16th anniversary of their sons death.
Its still really hard, Judy Shepard told
the Blade.
Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson on
Oct. 6, 1998, robbed Matthew Shepard and
brutally beat him before tying him to a fence
outside Laramie, Wyo. Same-sex couples
in Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and
Indiana began to legally marry 16 years later
to the day after the U.S. Supreme Court
declined to hear lawsuits challenging gay
nuptials bans in the ve states.
Gays and lesbians began to legally
marry in Wyoming on Oct. 21 after a
federal judge struck down the states
same-sex marriage ban.

Rome mayor refuses order to stop registering marriages

Mayors in Italy push
for recognition of gay
marriages performed in
other countries

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com

The mayor of Rome deed a directive

from Italys interior minister on Oct. 31
by refusing to remove from the citys
marriage registry the names of same-sex
couples he entered into the document who
were legally married in other countries in
Europe and the United States.
The Italian news agency ANSA reports
that Mayor Ignazio Marino announced he
would not obey an order on Friday by a
representative of the national government
to annul at least 16 entries of married
gay couples he has placed in the citys
ocial marriage registry since September.
The
government
representative,
known in Italy as a Prefect, was acting at

the direction of Interior Minister Angelino

Alfano, a member of Italys center-right
party, who has said the registration of

marriages of same-sex couples cannot

take place because such marriages are
not legal in Italy.
But according to an Oct. 31 ANSA story,
Marino and mayors of several other cities,
including Milan, Bologna, and Udine,
created an administrative no-mans
land for the national government in
September when they began registering
the marriages of gay couples.
Among other things, the mayors argued
that Italy may be bound by treaties to
recognize legal marriages performed in
European Union countries that recognize
them, such as France, Belgium and Spain,
as well as in Canada and the United States.
Following a registration ceremony in
September at Romes city hall, Marino told
the New York Times that he and his fellow
mayors entering the names of married
same-sex couples in their respective
citys registry book view their action as
a symbolic gesture to prod the national
government into passing legislation to
legalize such marriages in Italy.
The Times reported the mayors

acknowledged that the couples being

entered into the registry could not obtain
any of the rights and benets of marriage
under Italian law.
Today is a special day, but we still have
a long way to go so that this may become a
normal day, the Times quoted Marino as
saying last month as several same-sex couples
who married in other countries watched him
enter their names in the registry.
Because of the unfortunate lack of a
national law, I can only register it, the
Times quoted him as saying
In its story on Friday, ANSA reported that
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called Marino
to praise his strong and courageous
stance and told him to keep going, my
friend, keep ghting the good ght.
ANSA said de Blasio met and became
friends with Marino in July when the New
York mayor and his family visited Italy.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi
recently proposed a law to recognize
civil partnerships for same-sex couples
in Italy but stopped short of supporting
recognition of same-sex marriage.

New study explores LGBT smoking trends

LIVONIA, Mich. A new study of LGBT Michigan residents looked at tobacco use
exploring behavior and attitudes, campaign awareness and cessation eorts and media
messages, Pride Source, a Michigan LGBT publication reports.
The Armations Community Center and the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource
Center, funded by the Michigan Department of Community Health, facilitated eight
focus groups, the article said. Participants were asked to evaluate the eectiveness of
ads from several agencies.
Most started smoking before 18 and reported a desire or an attempt to quit. Smoking
is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. according to the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the article said. The American Lung
Association reports that gay and bi men are between 27 and 71 percent more likely to
smoke than their straight counterparts and lesbian and bi women are 70-350 percent
more likely to smoke than straight women, Pride Source reports.
The Michigan study found that tobacco campaigns were seen as more eective when
presented by counterculture or insiders of the LGBT community and was extended to
musical acts or celebrity gures that were considered to be part of counterculture. Antismoking messages from LGBT identied artists and performers such as Tegan and Sara
and RuPaul had a powerful impact, Pride Source reports.

Gay men urged to become lifeguards

SYDNEY A new campaign targeting gay men in Australia urges them to become
lifeguards for others in their social networks to help combat higher rates of depression,
anxiety and suicide, the Star Observer reports.
The Lifeguard Project is an eort of the National LGBTI Health Alliance and claims
it works to foster a community conversation among gay men to give them the
condence, knowledge and skills to become lifeguards in their social networks to
support themselves, partners and friends, the article said.
To recognize the diversity of gay identities and communities, the team behind the
campaign will be working closely with gay communities to develop aninteractive online
toolkit containing practical strategies, advice and actions, the Observer article notes.
The $410,000 project is funded by beyondblue with donations from the Movember
Foundation and is expected to be unveiled in 2015.
Research shows that gay men often see their friends struggling with anxiety and
depression but lack the condence or skills to reach out to them to help.

Motherhood complex for lesbians, bi women

LINCOLN, Neb. A new study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln nds that
the notion of motherhood among lesbian and bi women is much broader and more
complex than traditional notions of it being either non-existent or thought of in terms
of seeking data to reect a so-called lesbian baby boom, Health Canal reports.
The study, based on responses from the National Survey of Fertility Barriers, focused
on sexual-minority womens desires and intentions to parent and on the importance
they place on being mothers. Its ndings highlighted the unique choices lesbians and
bisexuals often face and, researchers say, punched holes in stereotypes surrounding
sexual orientation and motherhood, Health Canal reports. The study was published in
October in the Journal of Family Issues.
Half of the studys respondents said it was important to have children. A quarter
said it was not important to have a child, but did say it was important to raise a child,
an important distinction, said lead author Emily Kazyak, UNL assistant professor of
sociology. This suggested that lesbians and bisexuals often want children but dont
necessarily view carrying their own child as important, the article notes.
Sexual minority women make this distinction between having children being
pregnant and giving birth versus raising children, Kazyak, the studys lead author,
said. That was unique to sexual minority women; we didnt nd that with heterosexual
women.
Julia McQuillan, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology, said the idea of
motherhood is dierent in a relationship with two women who are both biologically
capable of having a child.
Most heterosexual women cant choose who is going to carry the child, McQuillan
told Health Canal. But for lesbian couples, there is a choice they can ask who is going
to have the child and who is going to raise the child and it could be dierent people.
That opens up a really interesting dynamic.

Seeking a silver lining for

LGBT voters in the GOP wave

KEVIN NAFF is editor of Washington Blade and

can be reached at kna@washblade.com.

Election Night 2014 serves as a stark

reminder that the LGBT advances weve
seen in recent years are fragile and the
ght for true equality is far from over.
All across the country, voters rejected
Democratic congressional candidates
and installed conservative Republicans,
some of whom will surely attempt attacks
on our rights.
The news was dispiriting in state houses, too, where even in true-blue Maryland,
an unknown GOP businessman handily
defeated the incumbent lieutenant governor, who was supposed to benet from
campaign rallies and fundraisers led by
the biggest Democratic names Hillary,
Bill and Michelle.

The new makeup of Congress, with Republicans rmly in control of both chambers, surely means that the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act is dead for the
foreseeable future, despite calls by some
to attach the measure to another legislative vehicle. And although theres no appetite for an anti-gay amendment barring
marriage equality, we will likely see eorts
by some Republicans to advance a federal
religious exemption bill that would allow
ocials to opt out of ociating same-sex
marriages or even enable businesses to
refuse service to gay couples.
Already, the National Organization for
Marriage has announced plans for an anti-gay marriage march next year. In one
night, we went from talk of a post-gay
world back to playing defense in many
parts of the country.
The silver lining is that LGBT issues
didnt play a prominent role in many
races. Marriage emerged in some red
states, like Georgia, but Republican candidates largely waged savvy campaigns focused on the economy and avoided being
drawn into ghts over social issues.
In Maryland, Republican victor Larry
Hogan said he had evolved on marriage, but noted he opposes the states
new transgender rights law that took ef-

EDITORIAL CARTOON

fect just last month. His win stood out in a

night of GOP victories, as polls showed his
opponent Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown with a
comfortable lead going into the election.
But Brown made several amateurish blunders, including devoting a large
chunk of his early TV ad campaign to attacking Hogan, which only served to grow
his name recognition in a state where
almost no one had heard of him before
seeing Browns ads. Brown seemed to be
merely waiting his turn and never oered
a compelling or clear agenda beyond extending pre-K without satisfactorily answering how hed pay for it. It was comical
to watch Brown in debates attempt to use
the marriage issue against Hogan. Brown,
like his boss Gov. Martin OMalley, was
late to the marriage party and certainly
doesnt deserve credit for its eventual
success. His loss in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more
than 2-1 should spell the end of OMalleys
presidential ambitions. Hogan used the
endless OMalley tax increases of the past
eight years to mercilessly hammer Brown
and it worked brilliantly.
Elsewhere, there was more bad news for
LGBT advocates. Mike Michaud lost his bid
for Maine governor. He would have been
the rst openly gay person elected to a
governors oce in the country. The annoyingly entitled Sean Eldridge, who wed Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, lost his race
for Congress from New York, despite moving from one multi-million dollar mansion
to another in a dierent district in a craven
and transparent bout of carpetbagging.
Clay Aikens vanity campaign for Congress
also fell short in North Carolina.
But the biggest loser of the night was
President Obama, who was unfairly repudiated by voters everywhere. The sad
irony about his seemingly lost and Carteresque presidency is that he rose to national prominence based on his communication skills but has failed to use them
once in oce to assuage jittery voters
who have been bombarded with one crisis after another for the past two years,
from Crimea to a crush of children crossing the border to ISIS to Ebola.
Obama seems uninterested in playing
the game of politics and reluctant to use
his bully pulpit. Unfortunately, voters forgot the mess he was handed after the disastrous Bush presidency and now clearly blame him for a lack of leadership on a
host of issues foreign and domestic. He
will become a lame dame in short order.
If theres a bright side for Democrats,
it may lie in 2016, when Republicans will
have to scale the blue wall of reliably
Democratic 18 states and D.C. and their
combined 242 electoral votes to defeat
Hillary Clinton.

Summoning the ancestors

The spirits of comrades
living and dead sustain and
guide us in our struggle

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist.

Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

When Steve Clemons of The Atlantic invited me to the Washington Ideas Forum that
began Oct. 29, I looked at the schedule and
quipped, Its an impressive lineup for the
morning after the High Heel Race! Needless to say, the Secretaries of State and Defense, National Security Adviser, and corporate titans did not run down 17th Street in
drag that Tuesday night. You could, however, catch a faux Michelle Obama, complete
with Secret Service detail and a basket with
a turnip to promote a healthy diet.
In 1991, D.C. police rioted against the
benign revelers who had taken over

the street that included the block subsequently named Frank Kameny Way.
Those street signs, and the crowds lining
the sidewalks for what has become an
annual Halloween tradition, are a small
testament to the gay communitys victory.
I remember several members of the
Gay Activists Alliance riding in Kamenys
car on an autumn night in 1981 after Congress vetoed our rst attempt to repeal
the Districts sodomy law. My colleague
Tom Chorlton was ranting about how
San Franciscos Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were setting back our cause. I said
they were funny and to lighten up.
Tom and Frank are gone. I was the new
kid in town back then, when our struggles
were mostly defensive and few dreamed
of reaching for the gold ring of marriage.
At one session of the 2014 Ideas Forum,
Jonathan Capehart of The Washington
Post interviewed marriage equality attorneys Evan Wolfson and Ted Olson. Their
amicable interplay showed no trace of
the ap over Jo Beckers book Forcing the
Spring, which inated Olsons role in the
movement and gave short shrift to Wolfson, Mary Bonauto, Roberta Kaplan and
others. The struggle goes on, and more
war stories lie ahead.

Clemons said after the rst day of the

Ideas Forum that it showed how many exciting things are happening. I am writing
before the election for publication afterward, and in my state of waiting I agree.
We have much to explore and create. The
candidates who have haunted our airwaves and mailboxes are not as important as they pretended.
Progress unconnected to voting booths
arose last week when Apple CEO Tim
Cook publicly came out: Im proud to be
gay, and I consider being gay among the
greatest gifts God has given me. Someone joked that Cook had come out as a
rich white man; but by sacricing some of
his privacy he spent his privilege in a way
that will lift up many others.
Death stalks each generation in its own
way, as activist David Mixner reminded us

On my roof with the crowds cheers in
the distance, I scan the skyline and think
how insulated we are from the mayhem
America causes overseas. The greatest

threat to our cities is internal, from fear

and contempt that blind us to one another. Police in Ferguson, Missouri have
stockpiled weapons in anticipation of the
grand jury decision in the death of Michael Brown. The prospect of dierence
descending upon a street, peaceful or
not, provokes an impulse to suppress.
When injustice rouses my rage, I summon

Who would have thought that one of

the few bright lights in this bad, sad, mad
old world would be some papal shine? Often after I read a quote from Pope Francis,
my rst thought is, Is the Pope Catholic?
And usually, I really am asking. I dont
know if hes Catholic, but Pope Francis sure
is Jesuit. The Jesuit Orders founding mission to help the poor and to educate
was based on Jesus simple golden rule that
we treat others as we wanted to be treated.
I attended Catholic schools from rst
through 12th grades. I went to a local Je-

suit college after Our Lady of Psychological Warfare High School. After 12 years
of a few young, bright nuns and a lot of
old, dim, crazy ones, I was ready for an

intellectual challenge. For some reason I
thought Jesuits were Jewish priests.
My freshman year religion teacher was
an old, often-sober priest and seemed to
enjoy blowing my mind. In one class he
gleefully insinuated that the parting of
the Red Sea might have been caused by
drought and not by a God who looked like
Charlton Heston wielding a light saber,
smiting the red-dyed seas.
The pope was recently parsing Genesis
at the plenary session of the Pontical
Academy of Sciences and said, When we
read about Creation in Genesis, we run

the notion of creation, because evolution

requires creation of beings that evolve.
He suggested that competing beliefs in
creation and evolution can co-exist.
Cue the strobe lights!
Only time will tell what eect this kind
of talk will have on ticket sales at the Creation Museum in Kentucky. Ken Ham,
who also started Answers in Genesis,
an apologetics ministry helping Christians to defend their faith, founded the
museum/theme park six years ago. Rev.
Ham believes his Creation Museum and
his nearby Ark Encounter project a life-

saur Den with a world-class Allosaurus dinosaur skeleton, Dr. Crawleys Insectorium,
a petting zoo with a zonkey, a zorse and
wallabies, and a two-hour park zip-line tour,
the largest in the tri-state area. The park brochure is a little vague on the zonkey-zorsescripture-learning connection. In interviews,
Rev. Hams motivation seems fueled by a
frankly unchristian resentment toward the
smarty-pants, evolutionists at the Smithsonian who have lots of dinosaurs.
If ticket sales do falter, I worry Rev.
Ham might start a new attraction, The
Pope Francis Slapping Booth.

Tim Cooks honesty will aid in ght for justice

Apple CEO says hes
proud to be gay

KATHI WOLFE is a writer, poet and regular

contributor to the Blade. She can be reached
through this publication.

With so many same-sex couples marrying, and the rest of us, queer and straight,
going to their weddings, its easy to think
that coming out not only has little or no
news value but is almost pass.
With openly LGBT people serving in
the military and in Congress; more out
actors and celebs than you can count;
several well-known gay and lesbian news
anchors; and even a few openly queer
sports and religious gures its tempting to wonder if the big reveal still has
much impact. Until, that is, the head of

one of the ve biggest companies in the

United States comes out as Apple CEO
Tim Cook did last week.
We like to think that, Its getting better.
We dare to believe, with same-sex marriage now legal in 32 states from Alaska to
Nevada to Virginia, that its no big deal any
more whether youre LGBT or straight. Yet,
Cooks announcement on Oct. 30 that he
is gay was huge news. Despite all of our
eras gay glam and glitz from Neil Patrick Harriss wedding to David Burtka to
the Human Rights Campaigns recent starstudded fundraising dinner on Oct. 30,
Cook was the rst Fortune 500 company
CEO to reveal that hes gay.
Cooks revelation of his sexual orientation
wasnt surprising. The media from Gawker
to CNBC have noted the rumors that Cook
is gay. In 2013, Out magazine ranked
him No. 1 on its list of the most powerful
LGBT people that year. What surprised and
moved me was the commitment to diversity and justice that permeated Cooks coming out announcement in a piece he wrote
for Bloomberg Businessweek.
For years, he was open about his sexu-

al orientation and many of his Apple colleagues knew he was gay, Cook said in his
Bloomberg essay. Of course, Ive had
the good fortune to work at a company
that ... knows it can only ourish when
you embrace peoples dierences, he
wrote. Not everyone is so lucky.
Though hed never denied his sexual
orientation, he hadnt, until now, publicly
come out, Cook noted in the piece. So let
me be clear, he wrote, Im proud to be
gay, and I consider being gay among the
greatest gifts God has given me.
Cook doesnt claim to be an activist, and
like so many of us queer or hetero, hed
rather not have his professional and personal life reduced to his sexual orientation. In addition to being gay, Cook wrote,
Im an engineer, an uncle, a nature lover,
a tness nut, a son of the South, a sports
fanatic, and many other things.
But, If hearing that the CEO of Apple is
gay can help someone struggling to come
to terms with who he or she is, or bring
comfort to anyone who feels alone, or
inspire people to insist on their equality,
then its worth the trade-o with my own

privacy, Cook added.

Cooks coming out is a cause for celebration and a wake-up call for the LGBT
community and our allies. In his Bloomberg piece, which invokes Martin Luther
King, Jr., Cook reminds us that even as
marriage equality rapidly becomes a reality, homophobia still exists. There are
laws on the books in a majority of states
(29 according to the Human Rights Campaign) that allow employers to re people
based solely on their sexual orientation,
he wrote. Countless people, particularly
kids, face fear and abuse every day.
Ironies surround Cooks coming out.
Apple works with some of the more than
70 countries that dont respect LGBT
rights. Russia on hearing that Cook is gay,
demolished its monument to the late Apple leader Steve Jobs. Right-wing Sen. Ted
Cruz disputes the constitutionality of gay
rights but says I love my iPhone ... Cook
makes his personal decisions and that is
his life.
Injustice wont be righted easily. But
Tim Cooks honesty and commitment will
greatly help the ght for justice.

INSIDE LGBT WASHINGTON

D.C. a rare bright spot for Democrats

Bowser triumphs over
Catanias divisive tactics

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

Across the nation, Republicans routed

Democrats and won races by big margins
that polls showed as close. They have taken
over the Senate for the rst time since 2007.
Though that may not make much dierence in the long run as their majority may
only last for two short years and it isnt large
enough to override a presidential veto. In
fact, many Democrats trying to put a good
face on this have suggested it will make it
easier for Hillary Rodham Clinton, should
she run for president, to campaign against a
Republican ultra-conservative Congress.
The District of Columbia is one of the few
bright spots for Democrats. After a nearly
20-month campaign, Muriel Bowser won a

decisive 19 percent win over independent

David Catania. She won Wards 1, 4, 5, 7, 8
and split Ward 6 losing only in Wards 2 and
3. Schwartz made no dierence in the outcome, polling only 7 percent.
Many believe that the undecided votes
went to Bowser adding to her strong showing when Catania ended his campaign on
the same nasty note he began it. He surprisingly used old political tactics sending dierent campaign literature to dierent Wards
bashing Bowser for her closeness to Fenty in Wards 7 and 8 and for her closeness
to Barry in Ward 3. One would have thought
he understood that in a small city with social
media so prevalent you cant do that anymore. Everyone sees everything and his divisive tactics just seemed to annoy. Bowser,
on the other hand, ran a great campaign,
sending a positive message across the city
that it was time to make sure that everyone
benets from the progress we have made.
She had a great campaign manager in Bo
Shu who put together a great team.
Other Democrats who won big in D.C. include Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton; Karl Racine as the Districts rst independent attorney general; Phil Mendelson, Council chair;
Anita Bonds, At-Large; Mary Cheh in Ward 3;
Kenyan McDue in Ward 5; and newcomers
Brianne Nadeau in Ward 1 and Charles Allen

in Ward 6. Elissa Silverman who changed her

registration from Democrat to independent
to run won the At-large seat being vacated
by Catania. All-in-all a great day for progressive Democrats in the District and when the
special election is held for the Ward 4 seat
that Mayor-elect Bowser will vacate on Jan. 1
there will be a majority of the Council there
for less than four years.
Now is the time for everyone, no matter
who they voted for, to join together to make
sure that the District of Columbia continues
to move forward. We need to hold our elected ocials feet to the re and make sure
they do what they promised in the campaign. Bowser has shown herself to be intelligent, hardworking, knowledgeable and
dedicated to making life better for all the
people in the District. She promised to work
to continue the upward arc that our city has
been on. While there continue to be questions about Vincent Grays 2010 campaign,
few would disagree that he has done a great
job as mayor and is leaving Bowser a city in
good shape nancially and otherwise.
There were a few other bright spots for
Democrats nationally. It appears that Mark
Warner (D-Va.) will hold his Senate seat as
will Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). While Martha Coakley lost her race to be governor in
Massachusetts voters there did elect Maura

Healey who becomes the rst openly gay

elected attorney general in the country. Seth
Moulton, who defeated John Tierney (D-MA)
in the primary, won big over gay Republican
Richard Tisei.
There will be recriminations and debates
over what this election means. Thirty-three
percent of the people said that part of their
vote was a rebuke of President Obama. In
my view that can be traced to the Democrats lack of a coherent message and not
being willing to stand up for what they
have accomplished and what they believe.
There was scant mention to the drop in
unemployment, the success of the Aordable Care Act, the rise in peoples 401k accounts or gas now being under $3 a gallon.
But in the end Republicans may nd it hard
to accomplish anything while ghting their
internal battles promised by the likes of the
current reincarnation of Joseph McCarthy,
Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
If that is the case and the next two
years are a continuing stalemate in Washington, the Democratic Party will become
the party of the Clintons when Hillary
announces in the beginning of 2015. My
prediction is that if she does become a
candidate she will win and be sworn in as
the nations 45th and rst woman president on January 20, 2017.

The Imitation Game, which had

The movies director, Morten Tyldum,

His achievements are so staggering,
Tyldum says. Alan Turing theorized the

QUEERY: 20 QUESTIONS FOR WAYNE WILLIAMS

How long have you been out and who was

the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out since 1994.I initially told
my sister-in-law who is also a very dear
friend. She told my brother since they had
already been thinking it for a few years. And
then he told the entire family in the span of
24 hours.I had to come in and do damage
control after that. The hardest person by far
was my mother. She avoided my phone call
for days but I nally got her in the car and
there was no place for either of us to run to
avoid it.It all worked out great in the end and
my entire family is very accepting and loving.

When the Gay Softball World Series was in Washington last year, it was a
mammoth undertaking.
About 5,000 attendees from 159 teams came from all over the U.S. and
Canada for that week in August and in addition to all the fun and games,
the organizing group raised more than $36,000 it gave to the North American
Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance, Whitman-Walker Health, the D.C. Center and
several other local LGBT charities.
For his eorts as co-director of the event, Wayne Williams is being honored
Saturday at A Night of Champions: a Benet for the Team D.C. College
Scholarship Program at the Renaissance Hotel (999 9th St., N.W.) starting
with a cocktail hour and silent auction at 6 p.m. Tickets are $100. Visit teamdc.

Team D.C. ocials said Williams deserves recognition for leading a
dedicated group of volunteers from the CAPS League to a successful weeklong tournament that many considered the best to date.
Williams, a 39-year-old Knightdale, N.C., native, works by day as senior
vice president of Business Finance Group, a community-based non-prot
that nances commercial property for small business owners. He came to
Washington 18 years ago with a former partner.
Williams lives in Capitol Hill with Boris, a golden retriever, and Chase, a
yellow lab. Williams enjoys softball, pool, travel and spending time with
friends in his free time.

Whos your LGBT hero?

I really love Ellen DeGeneres and what she
has done for our community. Her warm and
caring personality coupled with her humor
just disarm people and have helped break
down barriers and bring people together. She
is a great role model in both her public and
private life.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past
or present?
Too many to choose from, but my favorite
will always be where it all began for me in
Washington the old Remingtons country
bar.Its where I met most of my closest
friends that I still have today while shooting
pool and singing karaoke in the upstairs
bar and line dancing and two-stepping
downstairs.
Describe your dream wedding.
Im a simple guy, so for me, Id be happy
surrounded by family and close friends in
a mutually meaningful location holding the
hands of the guy that Im in love with and
wanting to share a life and commitmentwith.
What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
Helping small businesses succeed.Its my
day job and something I love.
What historical outcome would you
change?
There have been so many tragedies
throughout history, but hopefully we were
able to learn from them and grow and give
meaning to the sacrices. But lets also do
something to improve global warming before
its all too late.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
The release of the iPhone.Really, what
was the world like before we spent all of our
time staring at our cell phones 24-7 and not
actually interacting with the people and the
world around us?

202.747.2077

On what do you insist?

Respect. We may not always agree, but
we should always respect one another and
appreciate that our dierences are what
make us unique.

What was your last Facebook post or

I shared a graphic comparing Democratic
and Republican leadership of the U.S. over
the last 50 years and encouraged everyone
to vote responsibly and vote for Democrats I
hope, but at least vote.
If your life were a book, what would the
title be?
Life is Good, So Give Back.
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
Nothing Im very happy with my life.
There have been ups and downs like
everyone, but thats part of living.
What do you believe in beyond the
physical world?
I grew up Southern Baptist in the South,
oh god! While I appreciate religion, I tend to
believe more in spirituality and connectivity.
Whats your advice for LGBT movement
leaders?
Continue the marriage equality ght
until its done, but lets refocus on ghting
discrimination in employment and housing
and pass a strong, viable ENDA.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
My dogs and a good carrot cake with
maple cream cheese frosting.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?
All of them.We are your friends, coworkers, family members. We march in Pride
parades, we play sports, we work, we play, we
love, we laugh, we cry.Its all about respect in
my book.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
So many, but perhaps my favorite was
Latter Days.
Whats the most overrated social custom?
Wearing a tie in business!
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
None really.I just want to know at the end
of the day that I made a dierence somehow,
somewhere.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
Be comfortable with who you are.Its all
good in the end. Just surround yourself with
good friends and stay true to yourself.
Why Washington?
Its a beautiful city with a diverse
population
and
a
strong
LGBT
community.
Great
neighborhoods,
endless things to see and do.While its a
big city, it still has a small town charm all
its own.

HOLLY TWYFORD as Olivia and LUIGI SOTTILE as Ethan in Sex with Strangers.

Authors hook up in new

ways in clever new play
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
When opportunity knocks, it pays to answer.
For Olivia, the unwitting heroine of
Laura Easons Sex with Strangers, the
knock comes late one snowy night.
Tucked cozily alone in a remote Michigan
B&B, Olivia is working on her new novel
when an unexpected guest bangs on the
door. Reluctantly, she lets him into both
the house and her life.
Easons entertaining dramedy, now in
production at Signature, brings together
two very dierent writers. Thirty-nine
year old Olivia (played by out actor
Holly Twyford) is a talented-but-yetunsuccessful novelist who works as a
teacher. Brusque Ethan (Chicago-based
Luigi Sottile), 28, has already parlayed
a blog detailing his sexual exploits into
two best-selling books and a soon-to-bemade feature lm.
Snowbound in an informal writers
retreat without Wi-Fi or cell phone
service (much to Ethans chagrin), the
pair connects. Initially repelled by this
intrusive but handsome stranger, Olivia
doesnt write him o completely. Shed
never heard of him or his book but is
intrigued by Ethans online success, so
dierent from her passion for traditionally
published paper books and reverence for
established publishing houses.
Soon it comes out that Ethan
already knows about Olivia, and her
underappreciated novel. In fact, he loves
her book. And hes sexy, a point not lost on
Olivia. So despite Ethans scandalous blogger
history (for a year Ethan bedded a new
woman each week and wrote about it in a
less-than-chivalrous style), Olivia succumbs
to his dubious charms and spends the next
few days and nights having mad, passionate
sex with her new acquaintance.
Each of the lovers in Easons dramedy
wants what the other has, but in dierent
ways. Sensitive Olivia is appalled by the

crude content of Ethans books, but

she envies his success. And while Ethan
enjoys his fame and fortune, he insists his
blogger presence is merely a persona, not
the real him. In fact, he longs to publish
a serious novel, a work that will establish
him as a proper writer.
Though Olivia can do little more
than serve as inspiration for Ethan,
hes able to help her considerably. He
shares his enviable connections, and
more importantly, Ethan comes up with
a scheme to reintroduce Olivias rst
beautifully written but badly marketed
novel to his considerable following. Much
to Olivias astonishment and delight, the
plan works brilliantly.
Act two takes place months later in
Olivias book-laden Chicago apartment.
Her life has changed signicantly. Her
literary career is on track. Her relationship
with Ethan is uncertain. But when Ethan
commits an unforgivable act betrayal,
they part ways at least temporarily.
Twyford and Sottile are a two-person
dream cast. Both give wonderfully
nuanced performances as the conicted
couple. Their chemistry makes a possibly
improbable situation probable. Easons
play is funny, sexy, serious, thought
provoking and enjoyably unpredictable.
And the few places where the script
sags, its more than buoyed by the actors
terric performances and Aaron Posners
sure-handed direction.
Initially, scenic designer JD Madsens
inviting rooms seem entirely realistic but
on closer inspection, we see the walls and
ooring are cleverly made from books,
highlighting Ethan and Olivias shared
literary interests and ambitions. The set
also makes a nice comment on traditional
books. Will they go the way of the dodo?

STEPHEN GUARINO co-hosts the new Logo show The Straight Out Report with MIKE E.

New Logo commentary

show a study in contrasts
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Logo TVs new The Straight Out Report,
a new news commentary comedy show,
features co-hosts Stephen Guarino, whos
gay, and Mike E. Wineld, whos straight,
together to discuss pop culture, politics,
social networking trends and more.
The show debuts tonight at 10 p.m. and
will feature segments such as Enough
With The for overplayed stories; The
IT List, a quick cheat sheet of big pop
culture events to kick-o the weekend;
Unintentional Gay Moment, clips from
news, TV and lm that didnt set out to be
as gay as they ended up; and many more.
We caught up with Guarino, known for
his roles on The Big Gay Sketch Show, the
BearCity lms and as Derrick on ABCs
Happy Endings, by phone this week on the
eve of taping the debut episode. Because
its designed to be super timely, the shows
will tape just days before they air.
Its a half-hour commentary show to
watch me show o, to see how clever I
can possibly be, he says. I think it will
be a really funny rst. Its comedy this
is not a grad school program. So were
here to make you laugh rst of all about
the information thats been berating you
all day and night. Its not mock news,
were not fake characters. Its just our
personalities two comedians just
batting around modern ideas.
Guarino says the audition process was
unusually intense compared to other
projects hes done. He read with nine
other straight guys auditioning for the part
Wineld, whom he describes as a family
man from Sacramento, ultimately got. He
knows there was at least one other gay
potential co-host auditioning as well.
The segments are short just about
three minutes each. He guesses about
90 percent of it will be scripted but says

there is a little room for some ad libbing.

The writers are fantastic, he says.
Theyve done stu for Jimmy Fallon,
Chelsea Lately. Theyre great.
In playing up the opposites of its hosts,
race also comes into play. Guarino says
hes not sure if that factored into the nal
pairing or not but says it is something
theyll ri on.
But isnt that a potential comedic
mineeld?
I personally am not concerned with
anything, he says. This will be extremely
irreverent and refreshing and although
Im not gonna set out to hurt anyones
haircuts, body waxing, laser hair removal
feelings, we will push the envelope. In fact
I would be disappointed if we didnt get
into a little hot water.
Guarino says hes not the pop culture
vulture one might imagine a person in his
shoes would be. It was initially a concern
but one of the themes of the show will be
what he says was a surprise discovery of
how much he knew without particularly
seeking it out.
But by framing the show around gay vs.
straight opinions, could Logo be gearing
up for the same kind of stereotype
reinforcing that befell Queer Eye?

Stonewall Sports leagues have proven wildly popular in Washington since 2010.

Local LGBT sports

league blossoms in
unexpected ways
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Ever since Stonewall Sports burst onto
the LGBT sports scene in Washington in
2010, there has been one successful sports
launch after another for the organization.
Stonewall Kickball began in the fall
of 2010 with 90 players and more than
doubled that amount in its next season.
The Sunday league is currently maxed
out at 450 players with overow from the
league being handled by D.C. Kickball on
Wednesday nights.
The fall 2014 season that just ended last
weekend was held on the National Mall due
to the ongoing renovations at Stead Park
Field. Its unclear at this time when, if at all,
they will return to their longtime home.
Stonewall Bocce kicked o in Logan
Circle in 2011 with similar success and
was followed by Stonewall Darts in
2013, held at Diegos. Both leagues are at
more than 200 players.
In the spring of 2014, Stonewall Sports
introduced Stonewall Dodgeball, which
outgrew its venue in the rst season and
is now contested at the Jewish Community
Center with more than 200 players.
Martin
Espinoza,
co-founder
of
Stonewall Sports and the current
Stonewall Kickball commissioner points
to two key components that have led
to the success of the model built by
Stonewall Sports.
Any of the Stonewall sports are an easy
entry into the gay community for someone
who is shy, new to the area, just getting
over a break up or even someone who is
recovering from an addiction, Espinoza
says. Its a chance to be outside the bar
scene and to build a new network of friends.
The other aspect that has proven
popular is the sense of community that
the leagues provide to their players. Each
league is set up as a fundraising model
so that the teams have the ability to raise
money for their chosen charities.

the
largest
contribution from our fundraising but we
have set the model up so that the teams
are also competing for charities of their
own choosing, Espinoza says. Stonewall
Kickball has donated over $50,000 to

charities since its inception in 2010.

Espinoza was approached by some friends
in Raleigh, N.C., who wanted to create
a Stonewall league in their own small
tight-knit community and Stonewalls rst
expansion league was born.
Raleigh thought they might be able to
drum up four teams, but ended up with
double that in their rst season in 2013,
Espinoza says. They are now at 20 teams
with 450 players and raised $10,000 in
their second season.
Along with D.C. and Raleigh, Stonewall
Sports now has leagues in Charlotte,
N.C.; Greensboro, N.C.; Philadelphia,
Pittsburgh and Chicago with four more
cities also looking to come on board.
Kickball has been the mainstay for the
expansion leagues, but now the other
cities are looking to add the other sports,
Espinoza says. As long as they maintain
the Stonewall mission, my involvement is

ADVICE

Partner of decades dies but

search for new love feels
overwhelming

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed

psychologist who works with gay individuals
and couples in D.C. He can be found online
at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying
information has been changed for reasons
of condentiality. Have a question? Send it to
Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

MICHAEL,
My partner Grant and I were together
40 years before he died last February.
Grant was 18 years older than I am. He
had been incapacitated for some time
and I retired early to take care of him 247. I was with him when he passed away
and I knew in my heart that he loved me
and that he was at peace, not in some
uncaring nursing home.
Fast-forward a few months: Wanting
a new relationship, Ive joined some
dating sites. All the men I come across
are either looking for a one-night stand,
live in another state if they are seeking
a relationship or want someone much
younger than I. One 50 year old actually
wrote me, Youre too old for me, Gramps!
Although Im 65, I feel like Im 30. I know
I have a lot to give another guy and am
eager to nd someone to be with. But Ive
been out of the loop so long, I dont know
how to proceed. And I wonder if its even
possible to meet a single guy around my
age with the same intentions.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Dont rush trying to ll Grants shoes
too quickly.
After losing a partner to death or a
breakup, many people hurry to ll the
huge empty space in their lives. Especially
as we get older and have a sense of time
passing and our own mortality, its easy to
feel a sense of panic and urgency to nd
someone new before its too late.
Give yourself time. You cannot set a
deadline to nish grieving and you cannot
rush healing. Your view that every online
guy is unsuitable is a tip-o that you have
reservations about moving forward and
may not yet be ready to start dating again.
Keep in mind that losing a spouse,
especially when you have been together

NOVEMBER 07, 2014 37

for as many years as you were with Grant,

is like losing a part of yourself. Before you
start trying to settle down again, nd your
own footing as a single person. Learn to
function as an individual, gure out how
to do the tasks Grant once managed,
enjoy doing what you put aside for Grant
and grow. Yes, you can become an even
more fully realized human being on your
own without someone there beside you.
A long time ago when I was starting
graduate school, my rst therapy teacher
told me to think of relationships as gravy
on the main course of life rather than the
main course itself. Single at the time and
eager to nd love, I scoed inwardly at
her words: Easy for her to say shes
married. But as Ive lived life and shared
many of my clients journeys, Ive come
to see that she was right. A partner can
certainly improve your life, but cannot
make your life wonderful and whole. We
all must do that for ourselves.
With regard to online dating, when you are
condent that youre ready to move into a
new relationship, consider alternative ways
to meet men. Online dating emphasizes
surface appearances. People often make
their initial choice quickly, based primarily
on supercial characteristics, not by learning
about each others interests, personality,
character and values, more solid attributes
upon which to build a relationship. Dating
sites also encourage all sorts of game playing,
dishonesty and bad behavior, such as making
snide, ageist remarks. You dont need that.
Why not pursue some interest you
already have or explore a new area
about which youre curious? Youll be
giving yourself the great gift of going
back out into the world, doing something
you may really enjoy. Youll have some
fresh experiences and youll be taking
important steps toward becoming an
even more interesting, resilient person.
You have no guarantee that you will
meet someone, of course, but you will be
leading a life that is far richer than sitting
isolated in front of your computer screen.
And youll be meeting real people with
whom you are likely to have something
in common, rather than semi-ctitious,
occasionally obnoxious avatars.
Remember that you already know how
to be a great long-term partner because
you have plenty of experience. While
you are going to meet lots of people who
arent looking for what you want, dont
be discouraged. There are other men
out there who have lost their long-term
partners and are eager to nd love again.
It only takes one person to be that special
guy. I wish you the best.

A dancers dream. An artists vision. A remarkable story.

for years. After the war, Tyldum explains,

the newly formed British intelligence
service MI6 hid Turings exploits from
public view.
They put the lid on it. Everything was
kept secret. All the papers were burned
and they threatened everyone to keep
quiet about it.And thenafter the warhe
was persecuted for being a gay man.
In 1952, Turing was arrested for acts of
gross indecency and forced to undergo
chemical castration.
The computer camp link comes
from the movies screenwriter Graham
Moore, who admitsthat he was a massive
computer nerd when he was a teenager.
I was obsessed with computer
science, Moore says. I went to space
camp. I went to math camp. I went to
computer programming camp.
Moore reveals that among awkward
nerdy teenage computer science dorks,
Alan Turing is an object of intense
fascination and cult-like devotion. Hes
the patron saint of folks like me, the
consummate outsider. And because he
was an outsider in so many ways to his own
society and to his own times, he was able to
see the world in away no one else did, and
he was able to accomplish wonders that no
one else thought were possible.
Moore wanted to tell Turings story, but
he thought the odds were against him.
I dreamed my whole life about writing
about him, but theres this moment when
you realize that a movie about a gay
English mathematician in the 1940s who
commits suicide will beunnancable.
Luckily, Moore met producers Nora
Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky at a
Hollywood party and the trio decided to
make the movie.
They brought Norwegian director
Morten Tyldum on board, and the pair
had a period of six months to rene
the script. They left Moores fascinating
overall structure in place. He tells the
story from three dierent vantage
points: Turings experiences at boarding
school where he falls in love with both
his friend Christopher and the science of
cryptography (the socially awkward Turing
discovers he is better at deciphering
codes than reading human emotions);
Turing and his colleagues working at the
top-secret Bletchley Park facility to break
the unbreakable code; and, the aftermath
of Turings arrest for homosexual acts.
According to Tyldum, this elegant structure
turns the movie into an investigation.
Alan Turing is a puzzle, he says. There
is a mystery to him and we wanted the
movie to jump back and forth between
the most important moments in his life.
It was a huge challenge to balance that, to
make everything ow.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

As Tyldum and Moore worked to

strengthen the overall story arc and to
streamline individual scenes, they acted
out the entire movie. When they worked
on scenes between Turing (Benedict
Cumberbatch) and Joan Clarke (Turings
colleague and briey his anc, played by
Keira Knightley), Moore reveals, I would
always play Keiras part and Morten
would play Benedicts part. We would do
the scenes over and over again to try and
nd dierent ways to do things. We are
very lucky that there is no photographic
or video record of these rehearsals.
Tyldum adds, We had some really
tender emotional moments between us.
I think we were pretty good.
In these sessions, Moore also
played John Cairncross, a Scottish
mathematician who was one of
Turings codebreaking colleagues at
Bletchley Park. That role eventually went
to Irish actor Allen Leech, best known to
American audiences for his role as the
(former) chaueur Branson in the wildly
popular BBC series Downton Abbeyand
as the gay fashion designerVincent in the
indie release Cowboys and Angels.
Cairncross is a complex character
with a secret of his own. Leech says, Its
always great to play a character that has
information that others dont because
knowledge is power. WithCairncross, there
isnt any shock or horror when he discovers
that Turing is a homosexual. He just uses
Turings secret to protect his own.
Leech notes that the relationship
between the two men was complicated.
Leech points out, I also think that he was
a friend. He warns Turing that, You cant
tell anyone. Its illegal. Its a genuine act
of friendship. Theyve both committed
acts that if theyre caught they could go
to prison for.
Once the script and the cast were in
place, Tyldum led the company through
an intense (and very short) eight-week
shoot. It was insane, the director
remembers. We had to shoot fast and
cover a lot of ground quickly. It was
justveryfocused hard work.
Many of the scenes were shot on the
sites where they really occurred, including
the interior scenes at Bletchley Park
(which is now a museum). Leech says that
was an incredible experience.
He says, You could almost feel their
presence, almost like their ghosts were
in the room. Matthew Goode (who plays
another of the codebreakers) kept saying,
If we dusted for ngerprints Im pretty
sure we could nd Alan Turing in this
building. The fact that all these amazing
minds and all these wonderful people were
there, it gives you a real senseof awe.
Tyldum also emphasizes that they
were able to use some of the real artifacts
that Turing and his team used.

We used the real Enigma machines,

Tyldum says. There is something about
touching those buttons. Its a reminder
that this really happened. It does
something for the performers. Its about
the responsibility we have to do justice to
the legacy of these people.
Once the publicity tour is over, Moore goes
back to his writing desk to nish his second
novel. Hes the author of the New York Times
bestseller The Sherlockian which weaves
together the story of Arthur Conan Doyle and
a contemporary investigator.

Tyldum is carefully searching for

hisnext project.
For my sake, he says, I want to make
the right choice. You have to be in love
with the project. If you can ever nd a
reason not to do it, dont do it. Its going
to take years of your life.
As for Allen Leech, hes headed back
to the English countryside to work with
Maggie Smith and his cast mates on
Downton Abbey After all, he says,
the big house isnt going to take care
of itself.

Turing doc
Codebreaker still
enjoying success
Out lmmaker Patrick Sammon, whose 2011 docudrama Codebreaker told
the story of Alan Turings life, says he heard a big-screen Hollywood adaptation
was planned on Turing but says the two projects are dierent enough that
theres no substantial overlap or conict of interest.
I dont see it as competition at all, Sammon, president of Story Center
Productions, a documentary production company based in Washington, says.
The reality is that any Hollywood version tends to stray from the historical
facts so well see what happens. With Imitation Game, hopefully, you know,
theyll stick mostly to the facts and Im sure the message of Turings life will be
conveyed. The bottom line is I see it as very complementary and the distribution
companies are very excited. They think Imitation Game will only increase
interest in Codebreaker and thats often the case with a documentary when
a Hollywood feature lm gets made. People who see it are more inclined to
do some digging so it has the potential to draw more people to Codebreaker.
Although Sammons 62-minute work was shown on TV in the U.K. and has
been available on DVD and Netix after a 2012 U.S. theatrical release, Sammon
has been hosting screenings heavily ever since. Hes had 10 in the last six weeks
and has more planned. His lm has played in about 20 countries and been
picked up as far away as China, Australia and New Zealand.
I had hoped it would have a little bit of a shelf life because I thought the story
was timeless, he says. Even though its been out awhile, its not a dated story
and theres always someone whos new to the Alan Turing story.

The case against waiting for spring

Fall, winter are typically buyers markets
By SUE GOODHART
Week in and week out at our open houses, we hear buyers
say they are just scoping out the market and waiting to buy until
spring. Its true, spring is the busiest time of year in the real estate
world so there are more listings on the market, but there are also
more buyers. More buyers means more competition, making
other times of year ripe for a good deal on a house.
While each year is dierent, spring tends to be more of a sellers market with multiple bids and escalations for properties in
popular areas that are priced right. Summer, fall and winter are
typically buyers markets where you are rarely in competition
with other buyers.
To illustrate the shift in advantage, we took a look at the average absorption rates in our area so far this year.An absorption
rate is the percentage of properties on the market each month
that go under contract. An even market is typically around 2530 percent. Above 30 percent is typically a sellers market and
below 25 percent is typically a buyers market.
January 2014: 24.5% even market
February 2014: 33.4% sellers market
March 2014: 33.8% sellers market
April 2014: 36.4% sellers market
May 2014: 34.9% sellers market
June 2014: 31.2% sellers market
July 2014: 27.3% even market
August 2014: 23.3% buyers market
September 2014: 21.6% buyers market
October 2014: 19.8% buyers market
With rates as low as they have been in a while, now really is
a great time to buy. Let us know if you would like to chat about
preparing to buy a property now, or how to position yourself to
beat the competition in the spring.
