INTRODUCTION

III.

We all have many stereotypes, and it is not a problem if you keep in mind that
stereotypes are probably a wrong generalization, and therefore they dont
necessarily reflect the reality.
A. Who has already heard any stereotype about your gender, city or country?
B. Who has never stereotyped anything?
I am Brazilian and I not only have myself many clichs about other people and
other cultures, but I have also heard many stereotypes about my own country.
A. Sometimes it is even kind of fun to know what other people think about
Brazil.
B. In other situations, it is not so pleasant when movies or sometimes the
Brazilian themselves contribute to enforce the stereotyped vision that
foreigners have about Brazil.
Therefore, today I am going not only to inform you about how foreigners see my
country, but also to show you how Brazil is in reality.

(Transition: Let us start by defining stereotype.)

BODY
I.

According to Merrian-Webster Dictionary, stereotype is the unfair belief that all

people or things with a particular characteristic are the same.
A. In the first time that this word was used (in 1798), it was to describe a
duplicate printing table.
B. The name comes from the Greek and means solid impression.

(Transition: Now, that everyone understand the meaning of stereotype, I will confess
something.)

II.

We, Brazilians, have many myths about what you think about us.
A. Most of Brazilian think that foreigners (Americans mainly) consider that:
1. Geography:
a. We live either in Amazonia Forest or in Favelas (slum) at Rio de
Janeiro;
b. Amazonia Forest is an International Land;
c. The capital of Brazil is Buenos Aires.
2. Language:
a. We speak Spanish;
3. Behavior:
a. We are only interested in Carnival, Samba and Soccer;
b. We get fruits by climbing in the trees;
c. We have monkeys as our pets;
4. General Aspects:
a. All of Brazilian women have olive skin, with a beautiful body, and are
easy to conquer;
b. Our country is dangerous;
B. I have done some research about this matter and discovered that some of
these thoughts are overstated.

III.

I wanted to know what foreigners really know about Brazil.

A. I made a survey asking the people about their knowledge about my
country.
1. I interviewed 12 people (1 from India, 1 from Paraguay, 1 from Thailand,
2 from Germany, 1 from Egypt, 6 Americans).
B. With my survey, I discovered that:
1. 53.3 % of peoples answers were wrong.
2. 50. % of the people thought about soccer when asked about the first thing
that comes to their mind.
3. 58. % have characterized Brazilians as friendly and festive.

(Transition: Now, I am going to show you my true country)

IV.

Let us compare foreigners thoughts (maybe yours) and the reality.

A. Geography:
1. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia (it is not Rio de Janeiro, So Paulo or
Buenos Aires).
2. There are only 0.26 % of Indians (natives) in Brazil according to FUNAI,
the Brazilian Foundation of Indians. (It is not most of the Brazilians).
3. Amazonia Forest belongs to the countries where it is located (it is not an
international land).
B. Language:
1. The language spoken there is Portuguese (it is not Spanish).
C. Behavior

1. Not all Brazilians love carnival, samba and soccer, as 83 % of the people
thought.
2. We do not have monkeys as our pets, as 67 % of people thought.
D. General aspects:
1. Brazil is in fact dangerous.
2. Brazilians politicians are in fact corrupt.
a. Many people told that there are many corrupt politicians in their
countries as well.
b. I got surprised with these comments, because I never thought that it
was a problem for developed countries too.
3. Brazilians typical meal is steak, rice and beans, as 42 % thought.
(After all of this, I am sure that you want to know what I have concluded with this study.)
CONCLUSION
I.

III.
IV.

Overall, I discovered that I had my own stereotypes about my country and the
foreign.
By talking to different people, I discovered that, as my country is so diverse and has
so many different persons, cultures, slangs, and so on, the foreign thought about
Brazil is diverse too.
A. Some people really knew about Brazil;
B. Others lied on clichs and stereotypes.
I could teach more about my own country, which is important to me, because I love it
and I think that if people knew the real facts about it, maybe they could love it too.
Above all, I realized that no one who I talked to had prejudice with these stereotypes.
A. They really got really interested in knowing about how my country is in
fact.
B. Most of them simply do not have enough information.
