Position summary
Applicants are required to develop, evaluate and review basic science or clinical curriculum content for the
Oceania University of Medicine (OUM) MBBS/MD program. Successful applicants may also be required to teach
online 8 week PBL (problem based learning) modules or 4 week terms at the campus in Apia in their area of
expertise (either basic sciences or clinical).

Contract conditions
Casual contracts are available for Basic Science Consultants and Clinical Consultants. Contracts are negotiable
commensurate with experience.

Essential selection criteria


Basic Sciences

Basic Science Consultants are required to have an MBBS/MD or completed a PhD in the biomedical sciences
and at least 2 years teaching experience at a recognized tertiary institution, preferable medical school.

Extensive knowledge in at least one or more of the following body systems: Cardiovascular, Respiratory,
Hemic-immune, Musculoskeletal systems, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal/Renal studies, Reproduction,
Neurology, Psychology or Psychiatry preferred.

Background and/or exposure to pre-clinical disciplines, including Anatomy, Histology, Cell Biology,
Embryology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Biochemistry preferred.

Clinical Sciences

Must have completed a MBBS/MD degree at a recognized university/medical school. The institution
should be listed in IMED (International Medical Education Directory), or in the WHOs World Directory of
Medical Schools.

Must have a proven track record in clinical teaching ( 2 years) at a nationally recognized medical
institution/s.

Candidate must have attained at least 5 years of clinical work experience.

Excellent written skills, including grammar and expression.

Demonstrated clear and legible English spoken and written (IELTS score 7, TOEFL score 577 with a Test
of Written English score of 5). This applies to candidates from a non-english speaking background.

Ability to communicate complex clinical ideas to medical students.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team environment.

Ability to work to deadlines.

Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Ability to priorities workload.

Expertise in operation of a wide range of PC software packages.

Proficiency and accuracy in word processing.

Cross-cultural sensitivity in dealing with students.

Experience in the administration of academic programs and familiarity with general university policies and
procedures.

Experience with the software education program Moodle or similar web-based teaching platforms (ie
WebCT, Elluminate Live).

Exposure to problem based learning (PBL) case studies.

General description of duties and responsibilities


Clinical Sciences

Identifying areas of clinical or basic sciences that are most relevant to their area of expertise and
background.
Teaching via Moodle of assigned preclinical module (relevant to background) and delivery of the curriculum
which requires coordination of student small group discussion of PBL cases.
Implement and utilize Elluminate Live for conducting virtual class sessions

Development and revision of the OUM clinical curriculum.

Development of clinical lectures on curriculum topics.

Offering suggestions to improve the quality of curriculum delivery and teaching.

Assisting, if possible, in the growth of OUM by networking with established Australian and overseas
medical institutions. The Dean may identify specific areas where your expertise and network may be of
greater value in developing OUM into a quality medical education provider.

Undertaking administrative tasks relevant to clinical PBL cases.

Gaining the assistance of other staff where additional skills are needed for each case.

Participating in student small group discussion of PBL cases on a daily basis where relevant.

Revising and updating summative examination materials for assigned module/s.

Assessment of summative examinations and assignments for assigned module/s.

Revision and assessment of examination materials for assigned modules.
