The drawing above translates into a picture of chal

lenge in rural evangelism.
In the foreground farm
ers are busily at work in their fields. They toil
long hours and usually their upper most thought is
about only physical things of life. The hands of
the missionary holds out the Word of life to farmery
miners and fishermen of rural Japan. This is the
God-given call to us in Tohoku Rural Evangelism. The
call does not come from the people in Japan because
they do not know what to ask for now. The call of
the villages is given to you and to me, as Christ
ians. How will you answer this call? Will you go
to Japan to teach the Gospel in one of many needy
rural areas? Will you pray for and give of your
money to those who will go?

"Tohoku" means northeast and designates the location

of this mission -- the northeast part of Honshu, the
main island of Japan. Sendai is the chief of cities
of the Tohoku area and the center of education, com
merce and industry for all of northern Honshu.
Sen
dai is one logical center from which to take the
Gospel to rural places in Tohoku. There are five
other centers in Tohoku alone, where missionary
families should be located. Will you come over into
Tohoku and help us?

MAY 1968--TO BRING YOU UP TO DATE

Three years of extended furlough is rapidly coming to

a close.

Most of

the summer

and fall

of 19^5 was

spent in reporting to our supporting churches, speak

ing in missionary rallies, and teaching in summer
camps.
Since then we have made Security, Colorado
our home.
Martha has finished high school and has
been granted a scholarship in Nebraska Christian
College.
She will begin classes this fall.
She has
dedicated her l i f e to full time service to Christ and

hopes to continue her missionary life.

We trust God
will lead her back to Japan.
Marcia has spent time
each summer in summer camps. She has also been in the
hospital each winter.
The doctor has decided the
cause of

her trouble i s

bronchial asthma.

We have

bought an intermittent positive pressure breathing

unit that relieves the bronchial congestion. The doc
tor has given his OK for Marcia to return to Japan.
Paul has kept busy helping where needed in the Secur
ity church, doing supply preaching in several places
in southeast Colorado, and earning a living.

Worship

services

have continued

and the

in Sendai during

our 3 year absence.

There has been the usual turn over in attendance each

year, however some are returning again after school

and work schedules are completed.

Sunday School girl some 5 years ago. She is continu

ing the Sunday School meetings since the Motoki's are

gone.

leaving the George farm in

Nebraska which was our "resting place" in between trips since last June. We
journeyed west to Gcottsbluff for a pleasant visit with professors and stud
ents in Flattc Valley Bible College.
That evening we renewed fellowship with
Brethren in the Gering, Nebraska church, Then on to Security, Colorado where
the folk welcomed us into their homes again and helped load the remainder of
our worldly goods on a trailer for the trip to California.
On the way we
spent an evening with the Brethren in Salt Lake City where we were also sur
prised and pleased to have "happy birthday" sung to us.
Anyway, although we
are a year older, we are just as determined as ever to return to Japan.
Our week with the Fruitvale church in Oakland, California was a reward
ing experience.
Their zealfnr proclaiming New Testament Christianity was a
blessing.
We are happy to add this fine congregation to our supporting
churches.

Wo thank God

for

renew and increase their support to us.
Thanks be to God.
The third wook in November wo returned to Colorado via Albuquerque, New

Mexico, where we spoke in U of the churches and .stayed with our old friends
LeRoy and Mary Kay Mills. Then on to Holyoke, Colorado to be with them in
their yearly faith-promise rally.

Because we still lack about half or our needed monthly support,

necessary to continue touring among the churches.

it is

V/e welcome invitations to

speak at faith-promise and missionary rallies. We feel sure there is some

where among God's people those who will help us proclaim Christ in Japan.
Perhaps it is you, your church,

Also please pray that Marcia and I may have the support so we can
