Short Report

This report will describe on the designed and developed teaching materials for a
Year 2 English class, with regards of the principles of materials selection and adaptation.
The lesson planned was focusing on Unit 11 of the textbook, entitled Looking good.
The materials constructed were word and picture flashcards. The teacher was going
to teach about type of clothes. Thus, the teacher has studied the different types of clothes
mentioned in the textbook and used them as the main content to be written on the flashcards
constructed. This is in accordance with the principle of accessibility of the materials content.
Then, students can always refer back to their textbook, activity book or even picture
dictionary, when they have difficulty in doing their assigned tasks. The words that were used
as the content of the materials were simple and familiar words like skirt, t-shirt, singlet, tie,
dress, and jacket. The teacher decided to introduce the clothes according to students
familiarity of it. There were also some words that might seemed new and challenging for the
students, such as trousers, shorts, pyjamas and tracksuit bottoms. So, to provide mental
readiness, teacher has prepared and sequenced the teaching of words or vocabulary from
easy to difficult (unfamiliar ones) as mentioned.
The flashcards designed were colourful in colour. The teacher used a bright colour
such as yellow and light blue as the background colour. The font type was Comic Sans MS
and the size was 140. All students were able to see clearly, even students who sat at the
back of the class. To add on, each flashcard has a picture card to match with. This has
helped to enhance students learning and understanding. Moreover, the flashcards were
made from easily accessible cheap materials such as coloured papers and manila cards.
The words can be easily printed with economical printers and to make it durable, the teacher
has laminated each of the flashcard. Students were allowed to touch and use the flashcards
without teacher being worry all the time.
Besides the flashcards and to avoid clich introduction to the class, the teacher has
recycled a used A3-sized mounting board and transformed it into an interesting teaching tool
to be used in the set induction. The teacher has adapted it into a building-like card and with
the word Karamunsing on it. Students were excited when they saw it and were paying
attention to it, waiting for the teacher to show the cover and the inside part. Hence, this
material was appropriate for this Year 2 students as young learners like them are attracted to
colourful things. Teacher purposely named the building Karamunsing because it was a
familiar place and students have been there with their family. It was a good choice as
students were participating actively when the teacher asked for responses on the things that

students can find in Karamunsing and through it, they were able to guess the topic was on
clothes.
However, both have its weaknesses. The size of the card was big. Teacher might
having difficulty to hold it for quite some time during teaching. Teacher might feeling tired
and students who sat at the back might experiencing difficulty to see the picture flashcards
clearly. As for the picture flashcards, it may be a little bit small in size. This can affect
students learning because of the clarity issue.
