TheTreeofLife,oneofthemostrecognizedsymbolsoftheWesternMysteryTraditionismorethanjust
asymbolorgraphtounderstandtheDivineEmanationsthatcreatedtheuniverseinKabbalisticthought.
TheTreeisusedasameanstoplacethevariousDivineNames,planets,Archangels,Angels,andmetals
inalogicalordersothatweasmagicianscanunderstandtheuniversearoundus.Mostofushave
lookedattheinformationthatisascribedtoeachofthesephirothoftheTreeofLifeandthoughtwhata
dauntingtaskitistolearnallthatinformation,andmanyofthebeginningmagiciansarefrustratedwith
tryingtorememberwhichofthesephirothrelatestotheArchangelRaphaellaprandwhichrelatesto
theSun.
SojustwhatistheTreeofLife?Well,IthinkthatoneofthebestdefinitionscomesfromDion
Fortune'sTheMysticalQabalah:
Itisaglyph,thatistosayacompositesymbol,whichisintendedtorepresentthecosmosinitsentirety
andthesoulofmanasitrelatesthereto;andthemorewestudyit,themoreweseethatitisan
amazinglyadequaterepresentation;weuseitasanengineerorthemathematicianuseshissliderule,to
scanandcalculatetheintricaciesofexistence,visibleandinvisible,inexternalnatureorthehidden
depthofthesoul.[1]
Tencirclesarrangedinaspecificpatternandconnectedbyaseriesoftenlinesmostoftenrepresentthis
glyph.ThetencirclesrepresenttheTenDivineEmanations,calledthesephiroth(pluralofthe
wordsephira)[2],andthelinessymbolizePathsthatconnecttheindividualsephiratooneanother.The
wordsephira,literallymeanscountingandisdistinguishedfromtheHebrewwordmispar,which
meansnumbers.Eventhoughthesephirotharesaidtorepresentthetenbasicdigits,theyarenot
numbers.[3]Inamoremodernmanner,theTreeofLifecanbedefinedas:

Eachofthetensphereshasanamethatdirectlyidentifiesthesephiraandtheideathatthissephira
represents.ThevariousnamesofthesephirotharederivedfromScripture.Thefirstthreeofthe
sephirotharenamedinExodus31:3:

Inthekabbalisticbook,SeferYetzirah,thisisexplainedasfollows:the"spiritofGod"referstoKether,
while"Wisdom"and"Understanding"refertothenexttwosephiroth,ChokmahandBinah,aswellas
thehiddensephiraDaaththatfollowsthesetwosephiroth.[5]ThenextsevensephirothontheTreeof
Lifehavetheirnamesderivedfrom1Chronicles29:11:
Thine,OLord,istheGreatness,andthePower,andtheGlory,andtheMajesty:forallthatis
intheheavenandintheearthisthine;thineistheKingdom,OLord,andthouartexaltedas
headaboveall.
Hereallthenamesofthelowersephirotharedefined.Mostofthetimethefirstofthelowersephiroth
iscalledChesed(meaningLove),ratherthanGedulah(meaningGreatness),andthenexttothelast
sephirothisnormallycalledYesod(Foundation)ratherthanKol(meaningAll).[6]
ThisishowalloftheSephirothoftheTreeofLifearenamedstartingfromthetop,closesttotheDivine,
tothebottom,thePhysicalManifestationofDivineWill.Kether(Crown)isthetopmostsphere,followed
byChokmah(Wisdom),thenbyBinah(Understanding),Daath(Knowledge),Chesed(Mercy),Geburah
(Severity),Tiphareth(Beauty),Netzach(Victory),Hod(Splendor),Yesod(Foundation),andfinallyatthe
bottomoftheTree,Malkuth(Kingdom).Eachofthesephiraisnumberedfromonetoten,alsostarting
atthetop(Ketherasone)andendingwithtenatthebottom(Malkuthasten).
WhatfollowsisabasicdiscussionoftheTenSephirothwithsomeoftheirattributionsandnamesas
theyrelatetotheWesternMysteryTradition.Thesenamesandattributionsarenormallymemorizedby

andattributionthatcorrespondstotheappropriateplaceontheTreeofLifethroughstudyofthe
variouscharts.AnothermethodmaybetodrawoutmultipleglyphsoftheTreeofLifeandplaceallthe
numerousrelatedmaterialinthecorrespondinglocationontheseglyphs.Thisisagreatmannertolearn
theinformationasitrelatestotheTreeofLife.Thereisadrawbacktothisparticularmethodthough,
andthatisthatyouwillhaveanotebookfullofdrawingsoftheTreeofLifethatyouwillhavetogo

AnothermethodisonethatpromotesmemoryandisanoldHermeticmethodforremembering
multipleandcomplexitems.Thiscanbeamagickalmethod,ifyouwill,toremembertheseitemsand

Nowadays,surroundedaswearewithdozensofwaystomakeupfortheweaknessesofhuman
memory,thereisonethingthatisstilleasytoforget:thatlifewasn'talwaysquitesosimple.Inthe
MiddleAges,mostofourmodernmethodsofcollectingandstoringinformationhadn'tevenbeen
imagined.

Forgetaboutmicrofilm,memorychipsandsimilarhightechapproaches;lesscomplexdeviceslikefiling
cabinetsandindexcardswerecompletelyunknowninthemiddleages,andevenpaper,thebottomline
ofmoderninformationstorage,wasunheardofintheWest.Rather,parchmentmadefromsheepskins
wasused,amaterialsoexpensivethatitwasoftenlaboriouslyscrapedcleanaftershorttermusesso
thatsomethingelsecouldbewrittenonthesamesheet.[47]
So,justhowdidamagicianoftheMiddleAgesrememberalltheinformationthatwasrequiredofhim

toknow.Well,heusedamethodofmnemonicrecalltosortthroughallthisinformation.Themnemonic
methodofArtofMemoryheldaspecialplaceinthepracticingmagician'srepertoire.TheNeoplatonic
PhilosophyoftheRenaissancegavememoryandthetechniquesmnemonicsavitalplaceintheGreat
Work.ThisinterpretationofmemorygaverisetonewunderstandingoftheArt,turningwhathadonce
beenthepracticalwayofstoringinformationintoameditativedisciplinecallingonthepowersofthe
willandimagination.[48]
Oneofthequestionsisjusthowdidthisformofmnemonicrecallcomeintobeing.Thereisnoexact
knowledgeastohowthisoccurred,butthereisaclassicallegendastotheoriginsofthismethodofArt
Memory.
ThepoetSimonidesofCeos,asthetalehasit,washiredtoreciteanodeatanobleman'sbanquet.In
thefashionofthetime,thepoetbeganwithafewlinesinpraiseofdivinitiesinthiscase,Castorand
Polluxbeforegoingontotheseriousbusinessoftalkingabouthishost.Thehost,however,objectedto
thisdiversionoftheflattery,deductedhalfofSimonides'fee,andtoldthepoethecouldseektherest
fromthegodshehadpraised.Shortlythereafter,amessagewasbroughttothepoetthattwoyoung
menhadcometothedoorofthehouseandwishedtospeaktohim.WhenSimonideswenttosee
them,therewasnoonetherebutinhisabsencethebanquethallcollapsedbehindhim,killingthe
impiousnoblemanandallthedinnerguestsaswell.CastorandPollux,traditionallyimagedastwo
youngmen,hadindeedpaidtheirhalfofthefee.[49]
TherearemanytaleslikethisthroughoutGreekliterature,buttheabovehasanaddedmoraltothe
story.Whentherubblewasclearedaway,thebodiesweretoomangledtoidentifythosewhomhad
beenkilled.Simonidesrecalledtomemorytheorderinwhichtheguestswereseatedashehadlastseen
it,thusidentifyingthedead,andaccordingtolegend,hefoundedthefirstclassicalArtofMemory.[50]
Thisframeworkcontinuedintheclassicalworld,throughHellenisticGreeceintotheRomanschoolsof
rhetoric.TherewasabitofdifferencebetweentheGreekandtheRomanversioninthattheRomans
taughttheirstudentstomemorizelargebuildingsaccordingtocertainrulesdividingthebuildinginto
specificlociorplaces,thenmarkingeveryfifthortenthlociwithaspecificmark.[51]
ThenextstepcameafterthefalloftheRomanworldandthecomingofChristianity.TheChristianmonk
hadtomemorizegreatdealsofmaterialandtobeabletorecitethemfrommemory.Theyusedthe
samemethodsaswerepracticedinclassicalRome.
WiththedisintegrationoftheRomanworld,thesesametechniquesbecamepartoftheclassical
heritageofChristianity.TheArtofMemorytookonamoralcastasmemoryitselfwasdefinedasapart
ofthevirtueofprudence,andinthisguisetheArtcametobecultivatedbytheDominicanOrder.Itwas
fromthissourcethattheexDominicanGiordanoBruno(15481600),probablytheArt'sgreatest
exponent,drewthebasisofhisowntechniques.[52]
SonowthatwehavelookedatabitofthebeginningandhistoryoftheArtMemory,howdoweapplyit
totheTreeofLifeandtheinformationthatcanbefiledusingtheTreeofLife?Bruno'smethodisa
dizzyingcomplexcombinationofideas,images,andalphabets,whichrequireagreatdealofmnemonic

skilltobeginwith.FirstletuslookatanexampleofthemethodthatBrunogaveusinhisDeUmbris
Idearum(1582)[53],thehighwatermarkoftheHermeticArtofMemory.
thetraditionalimageofthefirstdecanofGemini,aservantholdingastaff,couldstandfortheletter
combinationbe;thatofSuah,thelegendaryinventorofchiromancyorpalmistry,forne.Thedecan
symbolsarepartofasetofimagespriortotheinventors,establishingtheorderofthesyllables.Putin
onelocus,thewholewouldspellthewordbene.[54]
Atfirstglance,theabovesystemisverycomplexandwouldgivethebestmagicianahardtimetryingto
rememberallthelittledetailsthatareinvolved.Butitissubtlerthanmeetstheeye.
Themethodhasagreatdealmoresubtletythanthisoneexampleshows.Bruno'salphabetincluded
thirtyletters,theLatinalphabetplusthoseGreekandHebrewletterswhichhavenoLatinequivalents;
hissystemthusallowedtextswritteninanyofthesealphabetstobememorized.Hecombinedthese
withfivevowels,andprovidedadditionalimagesforsingleletterstoallowformorecomplex
combinations.Besidestheastrologicalimagesandinventors,therearealsolistsofobjectsand
adjectivescorrespondingtothissetoflettercombinations,andallthesecanbecombinedinasingle
memoryimagetorepresentwordsofseveralsyllables.Atthesametime,manyoftheimagesstandfor
ideasaswellassounds;thusthefigureofSuahmentionedabovecanalsorepresenttheartofpalmistry
ifthatsubjectneededtoberemembered.[55]
NowletuslookatamoremodernexampleofBruno'smethodthatwillshedmorelightonhowtouse
theArtMemory.
Tomakesenseofthesestrangetechniques,itisusefultolookovertheshoulderofastudentoftheArt
ashebeginstheconstructionofasetofmemoryplacesandimages.

Imagine,then,ayoungBrotherAnselmashestandsoneeveninginthecloisteredgardenoftheAbbey
ofSt.Quilibet.Anovice,hehasjuststartedonthetaskoflearningLatin;theArtofMemoryisalsopart

Heturnsslowlyaround,staringattheoldgraystoneofthecloisterarches,thetiledroofsabove,the
