+ Sailing
Experience Vancouver from a completely different vantage point.
Feel the fun and freedom of commanding a beautiful sailing boat,
while learning new skills and earning a certificate which is
recognised worldwide.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT ON THIS COURSE?
Taking sailing lessons and learning to sail is a very rewarding experience. You will
love standing on the sailboat with the wind in your face, and marvel at Vancouvers
skyline with the mountains in the background.
After a minimum of 1 week English course at EC Vancouver, learn how to sail and
earn an internationally recognized CYA Basic Cruising Standard or the CYA Basic
Crew Standard.
Boat Location & Evening Classes
Boats will be sailing from Granville Island. Lunch will be taken wither on board, or
back on Granville Island (depending on weather and sailing programme for the
day).
Depending on the number of students the class room sessions will be held in an
office location downtown or on the boat located in Mosquito Creek Marina (a
larger boat than the one used for the day sailing class.
Course Material
The main reference source will be the book Basic Cruising Skills by Gillian West
and published by the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA). This book will be sent
to you after you made your deposit. You will also be provided with the CYA Log
Book and the Safe Boating Guide.
Certification
After successful completion of the course you will receive the CYA Basic Cruising
Standard or the CYA Basic Crew Standard. The content of the course is the same
for both standards, however for the Crew Standard you need to be able to assists
the skipper on the basic level, while for the Cruising Standard you will need to
demonstrate that you can be in charge of boat and crew.
There is no practical exam. However, it is expected that you will be able to
demonstrate the afloat skills as described in the CYA Log Book on pages 4.9 - 4.11.

At the end of the course there will be a written review of the material presented in
the course (see CYA Log Book on pages 4.5 - 4.9). While we will be going through
most of this material during the evening and on water classes and, some studying
before and during the course will be required. It is essential that you read the
following chapters in the text book before the course:
Chapters 1-3, 8-10, 16-18, 22, 26 & 27. There is a self test at the end of each chapter.
This will give you a good idea how comfortable you are with the material presented.
Feel free to read the entire book beforehand. Please dont hesitate to call us if you
have any questions.
You will have the opportunity to obtain PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operator Card,
required by Transport Canada). The Safe Boating Guide will cover most of this
material.
Clothing
The course will take place rain or shine. Dress in layers, you will be surprised how
much temperature difference there is between the beach and on the boat in a light
breeze. Synthetic fabrics are preferable. Definitively dont use cotton or denims.
Once they get wet, they stay wet and make you feel cold. For a sunny day bring a
light wind breaker. For rainy days a rain jacket and rain pants will be necessary.
