The amount of fuel consumed by the engines of a jetliner on a flight between two cities is a
normally distributed random variable X with mean = 5.7 tons and standard deviation z: 0.5.
Carrying too much fuel is inefficient as it slows the plane. If, however, too little fuel is loaded on
the plane, an emergency landing may be necessary. The airline would like to determine the
amount of fuel to load so that there will be a 0.99 probability that the plane will arrive at its

Fluctuations in the prices of precious metals such as gold have been empirically s own to be
well approximated by a normal distribution when observed over short intervals of irne. In May
1995, the daily price of gold (1 unit) was believed to have a mean of Rs 383 and a standard
deviation of Rs 12. A broker, working under these assumptions, wanted to find the probability
that the price of gold the next day would be between Rs 394 and Rs 399 per unit. In this
eventuality, the broker had an order from a client to sell the gold in the client's portfolio. What is
the probability that the client's gold will be sold the next day?
