Breakfast Meeting in Aid
of Needy Students

The Vice Chancellor, Dr Timothy Wachira speaks to

participants during the breakfast meeting

financially challenged students.

Daystar Students Resource Mobilization (DASREMO), Nairobi chapter held a breakfast meeting
themed Jinyime Asome on October 31, 2014,
at Daystar University Nairobi Campus. The aim of
the breakfast was to bring together associates and
friends of Daystar for networking and exchange of
ideas, on how to raise funds for the needy students
at Daystar University. This was the groups first event,
ahead of a talent show to be held on November
29, 2014.
Speaking at the meeting, the University Vice
Chancellor, Dr. Timothy Wachira thanked

DASREMO for coming together to find ways to

support the financially challenged students at
Daystar. With reference to the recent students
unrest in public universities, following delays by
HELB to remit funds, the Vice Chancellor said the
country has been experiencing steady increase in
the number of students joining institutions of higher
learning, what he referred to as, The Kibaki
Tsunami, as result of free primary education. We
may not be able to provide all the solutions, but we
can give as the Lord enables us, he said. The Vice
Chancellor revealed that on average, the University

sets aside Ksh.30M, each year, for scholarships for

Daystar students. He further committed to support
DASREMO in their activities.
In his sermonate, Dr. Duncan Irungu, a lecturer in
the School of Business and Economics said, when
people become strong, they more often than not
forget that people made them who they are. There
are no self-made people, but God always puts
people in our lives to help us, he said.
As he gave the history of DASREMO, the
chairperson, Mr. Job Waruingi said many students
in the team came to Daystar without school fees,
but well-wishers offered to pay their fees. Over
the years they have also seen students from less
privileged families, who have been at the university
for over seven years. This is what led the team of
14 students, to come together to look for solutions
to keep the financially challenged students in class.
Athi River campus students have also formed a
similar initiative named Daystar University Resource
Mobilization (DUREMO), whose mission is similar
to DASREMO; to fund raise for the needy students.
Also speaking at the meeting was Dr. Stanley
Kamau Maina, the chairman Ahadi Kenya Trust.
He challenged the participant to give saying, we
do not give because we have excess but we give
because we have access. Someones life is more
important than the car you are driving, he said. Dr.

David Wasambla, the founder of Cheka Mutoi

Aishi, said he does not give because he has, but
he gives because he feels the need to give. Your
gifts shall make you stand before great men, said
the pastor, comedian and author. On his part, the
chairman Daystar University Parents Association
(DUPA), Dr. Calisto Onyango said to serve God is
to serve his people, and if we do not love people
we cannot claim to serve God.
Two second year students gave moving stories
of how they are struggling with their fees and have
just managed to finish their 1st year. Some of the
students who have been supporting financially
challenged students encouraged the participants to
give towards this worthy course. A student who is
helping 6 Daystar University students said there was
need to come up with income generating projects,
where the profits going to aid needy students.
Also present was the DVC Finance and
Administration, Mr. Jomo Gatundu, Dean School
of Science Engineering and Health, Dr. Martha
Kiarie, Dean Community Life, Prof. Bernard Boyo,
Ag. University Librarian Mr. Josphat Muthembwa,
Campus Services Manager, Mr. Wycliffe Mutanda,
Ag. Corporate Affairs Manager Mr. Tony Okuku,
faculty, staff and students.

Students, Beverly (right) and Victor (centre) give their testimony during the breakfast meeting. With them is
Mrs. Coretta Ndunda, the Resource Mobilization Officer in Daystar University.

Afrizo Meets Immediate Former President

George W. Bush Jr. in a Texan Church

Afrizo pose for a photo with the former President of USA, George W. Bush Jr. and his wife, Laura, in
Highland Park United Methodist Church, Texas
Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will
stand before kings. Proverbs 22:29. This statement
came true for AFRIZO this past week. The team
had a rare privilege of meeting and shaking hands
with the immediate former US President, George
W. Bush Jr. on October 26, 2014, when they
visited Highland Park United Methodist Church,
Afrizo band arrived in the Lone Star State of
Texas on the afternoon of October 20, 2014, as
they continue their almost ending tour of the United
States, ministering in song and dance, to raise
funds for the University. The team had their first
show in Dallas, at Grace United Methodist Church
on 21st October 2014; where they got to sing
at Pastor Mary Miritis Church. Pastor Mary is a
resident of the US through the diversity program
and the Church Minister. She is also a Daystar
University alumnus and a former colleague of Mr.
Charles Kilonzo, the Corporate Affairs Manager.
Here the team got to meet several Kenyans and
of course you can guess what it felt like home
away from home! The Kenyan residents here
organized a day that saw Afrizo go to Mary Miritis
home and enjoy what some call fellowship and

swallowship, with warm Kenyan food in plenty,

against a back drop of the American culture where
cold and frozen food is the norm.
The team also had a chance to perform at two
Rotary Clubs namely; Dallas Rotary Club and Park
Cities Rotary club. From here they got another
rare chance to perform in a pre-recorded show at
the famous American Fox 4 TV studios located in
Dallas downtown; this was a big privilege for the
team.
On 23rd October 2014, Afrizo presented at
Southern Methodist University, Perkins Chapel. This
chapel consisted of university students and so this
was totally a new audience for the team. All in all
they still managed to pull an amazing show that
got the graduate students dancing. The team was
also given a tour around the University Theological
Library that has book archives that date to as
early as the 16th Century. University Park United
Methodist Church is another Church where the
team had their concert.
It was at the Highland Park United Methodist
Church, located at 3300 Mockingbird Lane where
Afrizo got the rare opportunity to sing for and

Afrizo get the congregation on their feet during a perfomance in the First Presbyterian
Church of Casa Grande.
shake hands with the immediate former American
president, George W. Bush Jr. It was at the 8:30
am service, the Daystar US hosts had mentioned that
this was the service that he would attend if he was in
town! So we came strategically and lo and beyond,
at about 5 minutes to the designated time, just
before the Church renting organ went off, President
Bush walked to the pew and right into the corner
where the Churchs special guests of this day- Afrizo,
were seated. On noticing the team, he walked
straight to us and greeted us and what a surprise
to all of us, including our hosts. A few minutes later,
Laura Bush did the same. The secret agents that
manage his security had no choice but to stand
watch the unfolding. We had been warned not to
expect any photography if he ever shows up, but
what a courageous move from our Corporate Affairs
Manager Mr. Kilonzo, who requested the president
to allow the team to take some pictures with him.
He granted this wish and we were all smiley as we

sandwiched him and posed for this coveted picture

and moment, even by the American people in the
Church as we would later discover.
The performance went very well, and from
where we were seated, about 2 meters away from
President Bush and his wife, we could noticed how
much they both couldnt help but brighten up with
smiles as they watched us, before, during and after
the performance.
After being the President of the US for 8 years,
President Bush Jr. retired to his Texas home and
this apparently is the Church where he attends his
Sunday services together with his lovely wife Laura
Bush.
In the Early morning of October 27, Afrizo left
Dallas, TX for Phoenix, AZ where they will continue
with their tour, before they do their last stop in Los
Angeles, CA.
Infospot wishes Afrizo Gods blessings as they
perform in Churches and concerts across the USA.

Leadership Insights from former US

Ambassador
Leadership is something that should be embraced
by all whether young or old. This was said by
Amb. John Graham, former US Ambassador to
Kenya, on October 15, 2014, when he spoke
to Daystar University students at the Nairobi
campus. Amb. Graham had been invited by
Daystar University Students Association (DUSA) to
speak on leadership. Specifically, he spoke on
the topic, How can young people build lives as
courageous and compassionate citizens.
Amb. Graham encouraged students to develop
a spiritual life and to always listen to the still small
voice. Start by clearing any clutter in your life so
as to have a clear sight of the future, he said,
adding that once you make a decision, you should
give it your passionate commitment and energy.

People should not grow up, live and die without

having made a difference that will better the lives
of others, he said.
Amb. Graham further added that developing
a moral context is hard work and that people
should aim to be morally upright with good
and firm principles. One way to develop your
moral context is to look at life in a context that is
bigger than yourself, he said, as he encouraged
students to keep challenging themselves and their
leadership skills.
In attendance was Prof. Bernard Boyo, Dean
Community Life, Rev. Patrick Musembi, Head of
Department, Peace and Conflict Transformation
and Daystar University students and students from
Riara University.

PRSK to visit Daystar University

The School of Communication Language and
Performing Arts had the honor of hosting Public
Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) on 29th October
2014, at the Athi River Campus. The aim of the visit
was to introduce PRSK to the communication students,
recruit them to join the society, and to inform the
students about the Young Communicators Award.
The event was organized by Communication
Association of Daystar Students (CADS) in
collaboration with Shine FM and Involvement
Newspaper.
Speaking to the participants on How to land
PR job/internship, Ms. Michelle Anekeya, an
Account Director at Hill and Knowlton Strategies
advised the students to make themselves marketable
by pitching for internship, as opposed to just sending
the application letter. When I take you in for
internship, you are an expense to the organization.

You have to show me how you will make my work

easier for me to give you that internship she said.
Think like the employers so that you can beat them
at their game, she advised. The other topics of
discussion included PR in the Real World and PR
and Social Media.
Also speaking at the same event were Michael
Owora, Operations Manager at Corporate
Reflection Ltd, Solomon Mahinda, Director,
Infrastructure Marketing Management Africa
(IMMA) and Anthony Kariuki, a student at JKUAT.
This was an eye-opener to me, said Yvonne Kinoti,
a PR student at Daystar University.
Representing the Department of Communication
were Mr. Hesborn Owira and Mrs. Patricia Mutuku,
lecturers in the School of Communication Language
and Performing Arts.
