attractive?

JM: WellImagreatbelieverinthesayingformfollowsfunction.
Interviewer: Whichmeans?
JM: Thatthingsareattractivetheirformisbeautifulbecausetheyhaveafunction.Adesignerhastothinkof
thefunctionfirst,ofhowtheobjectworks,andhowtomakeitwork,andfromthat,thesimplestandbestform
willfollow.Theideathatalotofindustrialdesignisaformofartisatbestmisleading,andatworst,dangerous!

JM: Therearealotofpeoplebeingattractedtothefieldwithoutthekindofknowledgenecessary...
Interviewer: Howdoyoumean?
JM: Well,forexample,Ivebeenapproachedbyonemanufacturertohelpdesignacar.

JM: Well,noitisntreally...ofcourseImflatteredbytheattention,butallmyworkhasbeenwithcomputers.I

JM: Yes,buthesnotreallyanindustrialdesignerintheclassicsense.Hedesignsthelookofobjectsafter
someoneelsehasdoneallthehardwork!AlecIssigoniswhodesignedthefirstMinitrainedasanengineer,
notadesigner.Thatwaswhyitwassucharevolutionarycar.JonathanIveisoftencreditedforhavingdesigned
theiPod,thedigitalmusicplayer,butheactuallyworkedwithateamofhardwareengineers.TheCocaCola
bottleweknowandlovetodaywasactuallyprettydifferentatfirstitwentthroughalotofchangesbeforeit
becametheiconicpieceofdesignthatitisnow.
