Course Description:
This introductory course is designed for students interested in understanding the effect of globalization on cultures.
It will cover the history, the widespread misconceptions about multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is a progressive
approach for transforming yourself. Professionals must develop new skills, must be culturally competent to
understand and manage the dynamics of the changes in the society and must be aware of the implications of those
changes not only for you, the nation but for the whole world. Globalization has raised many important value and
ethic questions. In the course special emphasis will be placed on the ethical implications of globalization and
multicultural development as well as their interrelations.. The course is based on an interactive pedagogy to
empower students to become more critical and focused in their thinking.
The aims of the MLDE 118 course are to:

comprehend the importance of multicultural education, language and culture, and the effects of
globalization on language, culture and media
improve critical thinking skills.
develop interest in and knowledge of a wide range of academic issues across the curriculum
improve English language skills (reading, writing and speaking) and knowledge within the specific
context of individual faculties or schools.
develop an autonomous and self-directed approach to learning.
develop skills in exploiting computers both as a study resource and as a tool for producing
professionally presented work.

The objectives of the MLDE 118 course are to:

understand what is read in articles distributed and take part in discussions on the topics in these articles
write an essay in three stages (outline, draft & final copy).
Prepare a newsletter on students hometowns
Deliver a presentation on students hometowns

The learning outcomes of MLDE 118 course are:


On successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of:
identifying the importance of multicultural education, language and culture
identifying the effects of globalization on language, culture and education
organizing a formal essay type (descriptive)
preparing an academic presentation, a newsletter and video on one of the topics discussed throughout the
semester.

Students Grading Criteria:


A (85-100%) and A- (80-84% )
The student has demonstrated the ability to manage all the above outcomes with ease. (Very clear, high B2
performance on the European Common Language Reference Framework).
B+ (75-79%), B (70-74%) and B- (66-69%)
The student has demonstrated some ability to manage some of the above outcomes, with some difficulties.
C+ (63-65%), C (60-62%) and C- (57-59%)
The student has demonstrated some ability to manage some of the above outcomes, but with a lot of difficulties,
further study is required.
D+ (54+56%) and D (50-53%)
The student has demonstrated some ability to succeed at a B2 level, but only at a minimum level; much of the work
completed is more typical of lower B2 levels in the framework, and the student will need to study for a considerable
period yet to meet B2 outcomes.
D- (45-49%)
The student has demonstrated only very periodic evidence of the ability to succeed at a B2 level; or has made very
little effort to complete the course work.
F (44 and less)
The student has not demonstrated the ability to succeed at this level, and has not succeeded in achieving the
outcomes required at this level.
NG (nil grade)
Insufficient body of work / attendance to enable a grade

Requirements for success:
Students are required:
to attend 80% of class hours in the semester.

to be punctual about the assignments and other course activities.


to actively participate in the discussions and activities.
to take the exam.
to always bring required materials to class.
not to download an assignment from an online source, buy or borrow an assignment; not to copy, cut and paste text
from an electronic source; not to copy a section of a book or an article and submit it as their own work.
not to quote from a source 'word for word', without citing.
not to cheat at the exams.
Attendance:
Attendance is compulsory. A student not attending 20% of the classes and/or not fulfilling the requirements of the
course for assessment will receive an NG grade. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the exam on the exam
date as scheduled. Students are strongly advised to bring the required materials to class.
Plagiarism:
This is intentionally failing to give credit to sources used in writing, regardless of whether they are published or
unpublished. Plagiarism is a disciplinary issue and will be dealt with accordingly.
Make-up Exam:
A make-up exam will be given for the Final exam at the end of the semester. Details of the make-up exam will be
announced on the MOODLE page. If students miss any of the in class tasks, they can book an office hour with the
instructor and complete the drafts only during the office hour within the same week.
