Description of fault
The Problem:
The above listed Central Unit (CU) will not boot up when powered on for over one minute.
Affects Production Series:
All CUs assembled before 10th April 2014
Explanation:
SD card data may get corrupted if the unit is power cycled or power is removed while central
unit is accessing the SD card during the boot up sequence. FW update 1.10.3 for 5900 series will put SD card in read only mode during boot up sequence to prevent data corruption.
Correction of fault
1. Process to update the CU and the SD card firmware at the same time without having to open up the CU.
Materials Required:

PC

DHCP Server

(2) network cables

DIS CU unit

Firmware is to be downloaded from www.dis.cc. (http://www.dis.cc/sw36250.asp)


Unzip the downloaded firmware before proceeding.

Step by step process


1. Connect one end of the network cable to the TCP/IP Port on back of the CU, and the other end
a network port with a DHCP server.
2. Connect the second network cable to a network port and the other end to the network jack on
the pc.
3. Connect the DC power cable from the DIS power supply into the power jack on the CU. Plug the
AC cable of the power supply into the power outlet.
4. Power on the CU and wait until it becomes ready. (Please be patient as unit takes up to 3mins to
boot up). The unit is ready when the display is lit.
5. Make sure that the TCP/IP settings on your PC as well as the IP settings of the CU are set to
DHCP.
6. Start WEB browser (any browser works) on the computer.
7. Connect to the CU by typing IP address [ie. 192.168.xxx.xxx] then enter. (see Fig.1)

8. Once Web page CU SET UP screen is open change URL string to: 192.168.XXX.XXX/cgibin/update.cgi then press enter. WEB page CU Update page should now show up. (see Fig.2)

9. Press Browse button... and select file cu_ISO_update_5905_5749_2014-06-19_11-5400_PART_1.dis from the computer

10. Press GO. The update file will now be uploaded and stored in the CU.
If the following screen (Fig. 3) with the message Package not compatible is shown proceed to
point 15:

If this message is NOT shown proceed with next point (point 11).
11. After the first update, the CU will Restart.
12. After the CU has completed restarting, reconnect to <CU IP address>/cgi-bin/update.cgi
NOTE: DO NOT PRESS F5 OR RELOAD BUTTON TO RELOAD THE UPDATE PAGE! Instead highlight
URL line in the browser by clicking current address then press the enter key.
13. Press Browse Button... and select file cu_ISO_update_5905_5749_2014-06-19_11-5400_PART_2.dis from the computer.
14. Press GO. The update file will now be uploaded and installed in the CU.
BEWARE: There is NO indication of the ongoing update in the display! The update may take up
to 30 minutes. Powering OFF during updating may leave the CU unable to start up!
NOTE: The display will remain blank until the code is written to the SD card. This may take up
to 10 minutes. Do NOT turn the unit off!
Go to point 17.

15. Press Browse button... and select file cu_5905_5749_4_2014-06-19_11-54-00.dis from the
computer.
16. Press GO. The update file will now be uploaded and stored in the CU.
Go to point 17.

17. When the CU restarts the firmware in the CU has been updated and the CU will go into normal
operation.
The update is complete when display comes on!

2. ALTERNATE PROCESS - CU FIRMWARE UPDATE


Materials Required:

T10 Torx Screwdriver

SD Card with FW b5747. The SD Card is available at Shure Service and is the same
for CU 5905, CU 6105 and CU 6110)

Repair Process:
1. Disassemble unit Remove the TWO screws from the top cover as shown.

2. Remove the FIVE screws on the right side as shown and pay attention to the length of the
screws.

3. Remove the SIX screws on the left side as shown and pay attention to the length of the
screws.

4. Remove the FOUR screws on the back as shown below

5. Open the enclosure to expose the SD card as shown.

6. Tear off the tape to exchanging the SD card as shown below.

7. Reverse steps 1 through 5 to reassemble the unit.
