History of Bellydance:

AsallacrosstheworldfromMorocco,TunisiaandAlgeriatoEgypt,Syria,Lebanon,Israeland
JordanandontoTurkeyandGreeceandthenIraqandIran,ancienttraditionalfolkdancemergedand
mixedacrosscountriesandcultures,thedistinctivemovesofbellydanceoozedandstirredwithother
dances,providingthemixtureofstyleswehavetoday.So,asageneralrule,bellydanceisidentifiedby
swayinghips,undulatingtorsoandarticulatedisolations,employedinarangeofdynamicandemotional
expressions.Characteristicmovementsofthedanceincludecurvingpatterns,undulations,thrusts,lifts,
locksanddropsandshakingorquakingbodymovements.Thefocusisonisolatedmovementsofindividual
partsofthebodywithlessnoticegiventothefootsteps.Infact,unlikeanyotherdanceforms,bellydanceis
performedwithinthebodyformanddoesnotrequirethedancerto,necessarily,movefromthespot.

anythingtohandwasutilisedlikepots,swordsandbamboocanesandnowthelistalsoincludeszils(finger
cymbals)andveils,enhancingourperformancestoday.

Africanroots;GildaGraylaterrecreatedtheShimmy.
