Imagine unlimited access to information at speeds that

make file size irrelevant. Imagine high definition voice and
video transmitted wirelessly to devices of all manners.
Welcome to the TD-LTE future as brought to you today
by Nokia Siemens Networks.
These are the scenarios operators envision as they tackle their 4G network
plans while improving their 3G networks - a natural and easy solution to
support the growing demand for data services.
LTE or TD-LTE finally makes the true mobile broadband experience a
reality: multi-megabits with virtually no latency. It allows operators to
introduce new exciting services more efficiently such as HD (High Definition)
video blogging, HD video on demand, media mobility, online gaming, etc.
It also brings a significantly improved business proposition with increased
capacity, lower cost per bit, spectrum flexibility, media mobility, flat IP
architecture, and end-to-end QoS (Quality of Service).

What is TD-LTE
TD-LTE (Time Division - Long Term Evolution) also known as TDD
LTE (Time Division Duplex LTE) refers to the air interface defined by
3GPP in its Release 8 Specification set for the unpaired spectrum.
TD-LTE provides users with a personal media experience similar to
that of fixed line broadband both in terms of bandwidth and latency,
meaning applications that were delivered yesterday on fixed line
are now available over the air and fully mobile with TD-LTE.
A comprehensive TD-LTE ecosystem will allow operators to benefit
from innovative applications that help increase revenues and
competitive advantage.

Solutions to fit diverse TD-LTE deployment

scenarios
Nokia Siemens Networks is uniquely positioned in TD-LTE thanks to
years of experience in mobile broadband innovation, commitment to TD
technology and LTE market leadership, for which it received top ranking by
IDC. The vast majority of the LTE and TD-LTE standards are common,
which enables Nokia Siemens Networks to utilize the same platforms for
both technology variants. As an example, Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi
Multiradio 10 Base Station for TD-LTE is based on our field-tested and
reliable Flexi Base Station platform deployed in hundreds of networks
worldwide.

The Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is a benchmark in size, flexibility and

energy savings. It is the worlds smallest software-defined, multi-technology,
high-capacity base station featuring integrated transport, security and a wide
portfolio of 2 to 8 pipe radios. It also encompasses a broad selection of
performance boosting software features that include beamforming, MIMO
and interference mitigation techniques like IRC (Interference Rejection
Combining).
Nokia Siemens Networks TD-LTE solution is end-to-end and comprises an
evolved packet core, network management solutions as well as advanced
self-organizing network (SON) functionalities. This assures a future proof
TD-LTE investment in a solution that can be easily software upgraded to
LTE-Advanced, as well as a complete portfolio of professional services.

Key Benefits of TD-LTE

Greater capacity / Lower cost per bit: With high data rates and
high capacity for data and HD voice, TD-LTE provides significant
improvements for the subscriber experience and for the operator,
a much lower cost per bit compared to legacy technologies.
Simple architecture: TD-LTEs Evolved Packet Core is IP centric
and technology agnostic, allowing operators to provide common
applications and services across other wireless access technologies.
Spectrum flexibility: TD-LTE will offer high levels of spectrum
flexibility with the ability to deploy in a number of spectrum bands
and a spectrum bandwidth that easily scales up to 100MHz. The
TD-LTE spectrum bands like band 41 (2.6GHz) and band 40
(2.3GHz) have large continuous spectrum allowing easier roaming,
high capacity and exceptionally high user throughputs with features
like carrier aggregation. This makes it very well suited for deployments by operators in both developed and emerging markets.
Download / Upload adaptability: TD-LTE spectrum is an unpaired
spectrum, which means that operators have the option of allocating
additional bandwidth for download or upload based on consumer
trends and business models. This helps to improve the user
experience and ensure more efficient use of costly spectrum.

Device ecosystem supports TD-LTE rollout

TD-LTE will be the technology of choice for most mobile operators with
spectrum available for 60% of the world population and 50% of the land
mass. Multi-band, multi-mode LTE-TDD dongles and CPEs (routers)
are already commercially available from all major chipset and device
manufacturers. According to GSA (The Global Mobile Suppliers Association)
March 2013 report, 124 devices can operate in the LTE TDD mode in
various form factors including dongles (USB modems), CPEs, embedded
modules, smartphones and tablets. Bands 38 (2.6 GHz) and 40 (2.3 GHz)
have the largest ecosystems of user devices and support for other bands
is also growing. Several LTE TDD smart phones have been launched by
9 manufacturers and most handset manufacturers plan to launch dual mode
(FDD and TDD) smart phones in 2013.

Proof is in the performance

TD-LTE not only makes existing applications faster, but enables a
wealth of new applications previously available only on a wired
broadband connection. Compared to wired, TD-LTE is truly mobile.
Its about personal media, with the ability to access content, share it
and take it with you wherever you go. For operators, TD-LTE provides
excellent spectrum flexibility, significant added capacity and a
platform for delivering premium applications cost effectively in
both developed and emerging markets

Heres what TD-LTE delivers:

Reduced latency <15ms end-to-end latency
Higher data rates ~40Mbps per user
Lower cost per bit compared to legacy technologies
Enhanced provisioning: more services at lower cost and better
user experience
Improved capacity 2.5-4x compared to legacy technologies
More flexible use of existing and new frequency bands
Simplified IP-based flat architecture, open interfaces
Reasonable terminal power consumption

Awards & market firsts

Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, EPC (Enhanced
Packet Core), and SON have won multiple awards, including recognition
from GSMA Global Mobile Awards and CTIA. Most recently we won the
first ever TD-LTE Market Development Award from GTI (Global TD-LTE
Initiative) an unprecedented endorsement for an infrastructure vendor.

Convincing cases in 2013

Worlds first live TV broadcast via TD-LTE:
On January 5, China Mobiles TD-LTE network transmitted a live
video stream of the Xiamen International Marathon to TV centers of
China Central TV and Xiamen TV for live broadcasting. The TD-LTE
network, built solely by Nokia Siemens Networks, exceeded required
parameters to transmit HD video and images, providing the best
live TV experience, matching a relay via satellite with a zero bit
error rate. Marathons are certainly not easy to televise as runners
speed over a long distance through dense urban areas. In spite
of the increased demand for network capacity with exceptional
traffic and load conditions, there was no degradation in network
performance, no packet loss and no delay during the two and a
half hour live transmission. A stable uplink throughput of 5 Mbps
ensured perfect video quality for millions of viewers worldwide. This
technological feat ushers in a new era for outdoor TV broadcasting
using LTE.
Seeing is believing at MWC:
Nokia Siemens Networks configured a live TDD/FDD LTE offloading
and load balancing demonstration network in Barcelona during Mobile
World Congress-2013. During the demonstration, visitors witnessed
how a heavily loaded network, either FDD or TDD, could be effectively
and accurately offloaded to a lightly loaded network using a patented
base station software algorithm.
CSFB over commercial TD-LTE network Delivered:
Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with
operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, selected Nokia
Siemens Networks to deploy TD-LTE and its Circuit Switched FallBack
(CSFB) voice solution in the operators live TD-LTE network in Pune
city. With CSFB, the network can transfer customers to the GSM
platform to make and receive voice calls and access voicemails while
retaining the experience of ultra-fast data services on 4G smart
phones.
